How to Set Up Steam Cloud Saves and Recover a Cozy Game’s Progress

To protect a cozy game’s progress, enable Steam Cloud globally and for the individual game, confirm that the game actually supports Cloud saves, and wait for synchronization to finish before switching devices. If a conflict appears, compare the timestamps with when you played on each computer instead of assuming that “local” or “cloud” is automatically correct. If progress is missing, check the original computer first; an unsynced local save may still be there.

Steam Cloud is not a universal save system. Each developer decides which files are uploaded, whether saves work across operating systems, and where non-Cloud saves are stored. The procedures below use Steam’s current support guidance and show how to preserve local files before making a potentially destructive choice.

What Steam Cloud saves actually do

Steam Cloud synchronizes the files that a supported game has registered for Cloud storage. The game’s Store page can show a Steam Cloud indicator, but that badge does not promise that every save, configuration file, mod, screenshot, or piece of custom content is included. Developers define the file list and may impose platform or cross-platform limitations. Steam’s developer documentation explains the implementation at Steamworks: Steam Cloud.

For a cozy game, this usually means your farm, town, inventory, quests, or character progress can follow you to another computer when the developer has included those save files. It does not mean that every game supports cross-platform saves. A Windows save may not be usable on macOS or Linux if the game’s implementation or save format does not support that transfer.

Cloud synchronization also is not a version-control system. When Steam sees different local and Cloud copies, it asks you to choose; it cannot infer which session contains the progress you value.

Cloud support is also separate from game ownership and installation. You still need to sign in to the same Steam account, install the title on the second computer, and use a compatible game version. A Cloud icon confirms that the developer has implemented some support, not that Steam will merge files from two active sessions. Treat each computer as having its own working copy until Steam reports that synchronization has completed.

Check these prerequisites before moving a save

  • Sign in to the same Steam account on both computers.
  • Confirm the game’s Store page lists Steam Cloud support.
  • Make sure Steam is online when you finish playing and when you start the game on another device.
  • Keep the original computer available until the new computer has opened the expected save.
  • If you use mods or custom content, note that those files may not be covered by Cloud synchronization.
  • Record which device contains your newest session and roughly when you last saved.

Steam’s official explanation of the settings and limitations is in the Steam Cloud FAQ.

Enable Steam Cloud for your cozy game

Steam has a global switch and a separate switch for each game. Both must allow synchronization.

  1. Turn on the global setting. Open Steam, choose Steam > Settings (or Steam > Preferences on some macOS clients), and open the Cloud tab. Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for applications that support it.
  2. Turn on the game setting. In your Library, right-click the game and choose Properties. Open General and check the game’s Cloud Synchronization option. Client wording can vary by version, but the control remains in the game’s General properties.
  3. Verify support on the Store page. Look for the Steam Cloud feature indicator. Treat it as confirmation that the game has some Cloud support, not as a guarantee that all of its saves or every operating system are covered.
  4. Launch and close normally. Start the game, make a small test save, exit through the game’s normal quit command, and leave Steam open long enough to complete synchronization.

If the game’s Cloud option is missing or disabled, do not assume that copying a random folder will work. Find the developer’s documented save location and transfer instructions instead. A developer may support only selected files, so check its support page or community documentation for the exact file names and platform notes.

How to confirm that a save has finished syncing

After you quit, watch the game’s Library status until Steam no longer reports a pending upload or an inability to synchronize. Do not shut down Steam, put the computer to sleep, or immediately launch the game on another device while a sync is still pending.

If Steam reports that it cannot sync, fix the underlying connection or Steam error before choosing to launch anyway. Continuing can leave one computer with a newer local file while the Cloud still has an older copy, creating a conflict on the next launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Offline Mode postpones synchronization. A session played offline can therefore produce different versions on different computers even when both devices have Cloud enabled. Reconnect the computer that was offline and allow Steam to complete the upload before starting a newer session elsewhere.

Why is my Steam Cloud save not syncing?

Work through the checks below instead of repeatedly launching the game:

  1. Confirm that Steam itself is online and that the global Cloud switch is enabled.
  2. Open the game’s Properties and confirm its per-game Cloud Synchronization setting is enabled.
  3. Check the Store page and the developer’s notes to learn whether the title supports Cloud on your operating system.
  4. Quit the game normally and wait for the pending status to clear. An abrupt shutdown can leave a save only on the local computer.
  5. If the warning persists, preserve the local save folder and note the exact message before changing files. The cloud_log.txt file in Steam’s logs directory can show whether Steam attempted an upload or download.

Do not delete userdata or disable Cloud as a first response. Either action can make it harder to identify which copy contains the latest progress.

Resolve a Steam Cloud conflict without losing progress

A conflict means that Steam found changed local files and changed Cloud files. It is not proof that either copy is corrupt. The safest choice depends on when and where you last played.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
What the dialog shows What to compare Safer choice
The local copy has the later timestamp Did you play and save on this computer most recently? Choose the local version only if its time matches the session containing the progress you want.
The Cloud copy has the later timestamp Did another computer complete a successful session after this device was last online? Choose the Cloud version if it contains that later session.
Timestamps are unclear or unexpected Which device still has a save you can inspect? Was either session offline? Stop and preserve the original computer or local files before selecting either option.
  1. Read both timestamps in the conflict dialog and relate them to your actual play history.
  2. Identify the device on which the desired progress was made. A timestamp without that context is not enough.
  3. If the original computer is available, keep Steam and the game closed there until you have decided. Do not overwrite a potentially good local save.
  4. Select the copy that contains the desired session, then allow Steam to finish synchronization before opening the game elsewhere.
  5. Open the game and verify a specific landmark, day, quest, or inventory item that proves the expected progress loaded.

Never choose “local” merely because it sounds current, and never choose “Cloud” merely because it is remote. The correct version is the one associated with the session you want to keep. If the dialog does not provide enough context, stop, make a manual copy of both locations, and ask the game developer for guidance.

Recover progress after moving to a new computer

Work through these checks in order. They separate a delayed upload from a game that never placed its saves in Steam Cloud.

1. Check both Steam Cloud switches

Verify the global Cloud setting and the game’s per-title Cloud Synchronization setting. Also confirm that the Store page lists Cloud support. If any of these checks fails, the new computer may have no Cloud copy to download.

2. Return to the original computer

If you can still access the old computer, open Steam there while connected to the internet. Start the game only if doing so will not overwrite the save you are trying to preserve; otherwise first copy the game’s local save folder using the developer’s documented path. Quit normally and wait for Steam to finish syncing. Steam Support specifically advises checking the original device because progress may remain there after an unsuccessful or interrupted upload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Reopen the game on the new computer

Once the old computer has completed a successful sync, close the game and Steam there, then sign in to the same account on the new computer. Let Steam finish its download before launching the game. Verify the loaded progress rather than relying only on the absence of an error message.

4. Handle games that do not use Cloud

Some games store saves outside Steam Cloud. Find the game developer’s official support instructions or community documentation for the exact path and transfer method. Copy the save while the game is closed, preserve the original file, and place the copy only where the developer specifies.

5. Stop when both copies are gone

If the save no longer exists on either computer and is absent from Steam Cloud, do not promise that Steam can restore it. Steam Support states: “Steam Support can provide further clarification on how the Cloud system works, but they cannot recover lost saves or assist in resolving cloud conflicts.” The statement appears in the Steam Cloud FAQ.

Can Steam Cloud move a save between Windows, macOS, and Linux?

Sometimes, but not automatically for every title. Steam provides the Cloud service while the developer chooses the files and platforms included. A save can be uploaded successfully yet remain unreadable on another operating system if the game uses a platform-specific format or has not enabled cross-platform handling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before transferring between operating systems, check the game’s Store page and the developer’s support notes for explicit cross-platform-save guidance. Preserve the original local save even when the developer says the transfer is supported. If only settings or custom content fail to appear, that may reflect partial Cloud coverage rather than a missing main save.

Find Steam’s local userdata folder

Steam’s default userdata locations are useful for inspection and manual preservation. The folders contain account identifiers and game app IDs, so the names will not look like the game’s title.

Operating system Default userdata path
Windows C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata
macOS ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata
Linux ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata

Inside userdata, account folders lead to numeric app-ID folders. Do not delete or replace files simply because a folder name is unfamiliar. Use the game’s official save-location guidance to identify the correct files, and make a separate copy before editing anything.

Steam also records Cloud activity in cloud_log.txt under Steam’s logs directory. The log can help show whether Steam attempted an upload or download, but it does not turn a missing save into a recoverable one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manual backups and the limits of Steam’s Backup Feature

A manual copy is separate from Steam Cloud and is useful before resolving a conflict or replacing a local file. A USB flash drive can be a convenient destination, but it does not enable Cloud synchronization and cannot automatically restore a save.

Steam’s Backup Feature documentation explains that the feature backs up game installation files for restoration and does not reliably include saved games or custom content. Valve-created game backups do not include saves; third-party save locations vary and may need to be copied back into their corresponding folders. Steam recommends testing backups that you create.

Make a separate save backup

  1. Close the game completely so it is no longer writing the save.
  2. Locate the save folder using the developer’s official instructions, not a universal path assumption.
  3. Copy the entire save folder to another drive or a clearly named folder that includes the game and date.
  4. Keep the original folder unchanged until the replacement save has been tested.
  5. After a transfer, launch the game and verify several concrete progress markers before deleting any old copy.

Why a cozy game may not show the expected progress

The game was played offline

Offline sessions cannot upload until Steam reconnects. If you then play on another device, both devices can create newer-looking files. Reconnect the original computer, allow the upload to finish, and use the conflict timestamps to select the intended session.

The game has partial Cloud coverage

A developer may include the main save but exclude settings, screenshots, mods, or custom content. Missing decorations or configuration does not necessarily mean the main save is lost. Check the developer’s file list and platform notes.

The save format differs by platform

Steam provides Cloud integration, but each game determines whether a Windows, macOS, or Linux save can be read elsewhere. Confirm cross-platform support for that specific title before moving files.

Steam was closed before synchronization completed

An interrupted upload can leave the newer save only on the original computer. Return to that computer, preserve the local folder, reconnect, and let Steam complete the operation before using the new device.

The file is stored outside userdata

Some third-party games use a developer-selected folder elsewhere on the computer. Search the game’s official support pages for its save path rather than copying the entire Steam installation or guessing a folder.

A practical transfer checklist

  • Record the last session’s device, date, and approximate time.
  • Quit the game normally and wait for Steam’s sync status to clear.
  • Keep the original computer powered off or untouched if a conflict is likely.
  • Copy the documented local save folder before choosing a conflict option.
  • On the new computer, wait for Cloud download to finish before launching.
  • Check a known quest, map area, item, or in-game day.
  • Keep the manual backup until the transferred save has survived a second launch.

When to contact the game developer

Contact the developer when the Store page advertises Cloud but the game’s documented save files are missing, when the game uses a nonstandard location, or when cross-platform compatibility is unclear. Include the operating systems involved, the timestamps shown in the conflict, whether either session was offline, and copies of relevant logs. Do not send the only copy of a save or overwrite files before support has reviewed the case.

Steam can explain how its Cloud system works, but it does not perform save-file recovery. The developer is the appropriate source for game-specific paths, file names, platform restrictions, and instructions for saves that are not covered by Cloud.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enable Steam Cloud for one game?

Enable synchronization in Steam’s global Settings or Preferences under Cloud, then open the game’s Library Properties, choose General, and enable Cloud Synchronization. Both controls must be on.

Does the Steam Cloud badge mean every save is protected?

No. It means the developer has implemented some Cloud support. The developer chooses which user files are included and whether those files work across platforms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which save should I choose in a conflict?

Compare each timestamp with the device and session where you made the progress you want. Choose that copy, not a copy based solely on the words “local” or “Cloud.” If the evidence is unclear, preserve both local files and pause.

How do I get my save back on a new PC?

Check both Cloud settings, then return to the old computer, connect it to Steam, and let the game finish syncing. If the game does not use Cloud, transfer the save from the developer-documented location instead.

Can Offline Mode cause a conflict?

Yes. Offline play delays synchronization, allowing different computers to contain changed versions. Reconnect the offline computer and compare the conflict timestamps with your actual play history.

Will Steam’s Backup Feature restore my saved game?

Not necessarily. Steam says its backup feature is for game files and that Valve-created backups do not include saves or custom content. Make a separate copy of the documented save folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where are Steam Cloud files stored?

Steam’s default userdata folders are on Windows at C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata, macOS at ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata, and Linux at ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata. A particular game may store saves elsewhere.

Can Steam Support recover a deleted save?

Steam Support says it cannot recover lost saves or resolve Cloud conflicts. Recovery depends on an intact local copy, a Cloud copy, or instructions from the game developer.

The safest way to protect future progress

Use Steam Cloud as a synchronization convenience, not as your only archive. Enable both settings, confirm the title’s actual Cloud coverage, finish every sync before changing devices, and keep dated manual copies of important saves. When a conflict appears, use timestamps and play history to identify the desired session; if the evidence is ambiguous, preserve the original files and pause rather than clicking through.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I enable Steam Cloud for one game?

Turn on Steam Cloud in Steam Settings or Preferences under Cloud, then enable the game’s Cloud Synchronization option in Library > Properties > General.

Why is my Steam Cloud save not syncing?

Check that Steam is online, both global and per-game Cloud settings are enabled, and the title supports Cloud. Quit normally and wait for synchronization to finish; inspect cloud_log.txt if the warning persists.

Which save should I choose in a Steam Cloud conflict?

Compare the timestamps with the device and session where you made the progress you want. Choose that copy, and preserve both local files if the timestamps are unclear.

How do I get my save back on a new PC?

Return to the original computer, connect Steam, and let the game complete its upload. If the game does not use Cloud, copy the save from the developer-documented location instead.

Can Steam Cloud transfer saves between Windows, macOS, and Linux?

Only when that game’s developer supports the relevant platforms and save format. Steam Cloud support alone does not guarantee cross-platform compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Steam’s Backup Feature include my save?

Not reliably. Steam says Valve-created backups do not include saved games or custom content, so make a separate copy of the documented save folder.

Can Steam Support recover a lost save?

No. Steam Support says it cannot recover lost saves or assist in resolving Cloud conflicts.

The Bottom Line

Enable Steam Cloud globally and for the specific game, then wait for every upload or download to finish. During a conflict, match timestamps to your actual play sessions and preserve local files before choosing. If progress is missing, check the old computer and the developer’s save path; Cloud and Steam’s Backup Feature are not substitutes for a separate manual backup.
