How to Set Up SRS on an Ubuntu VPS for YouTube Live in India

To relay a YouTube Live broadcast through SRS on an Ubuntu VPS, run a pinned SRS release with its matching configuration, publish your encoder feed to the VPS, then forward it to the URL and stream key for the active YouTube broadcast. Prefer RTMPS for the YouTube-facing connection when your SRS forwarding setup supports it. Test the complete route in YouTube Live Control Room before going live.

SRS is a relay, not a substitute for YouTube’s Live Control Room: YouTube still handles the destination, preview, stream health and publishing. The steps below focus on the server and connection flow; exact commands and configuration vary by SRS version.

What you are setting up

The route is: encoder or other upstream source → SRS on your VPS → YouTube ingest. Your source publishes to an SRS application and stream path; SRS forwards the feed to the current YouTube ingest URL with the active stream key. SRS supports RTMP and other media delivery paths, but the forwarding configuration must match the SRS release you install. See the SRS RTMP documentation and SRS project materials.

This is useful when you need a server-side relay between the encoder and YouTube. It does not by itself guarantee lower viewer delay, better picture quality, or a particular route from India to YouTube.

Choose an SRS version and deployment method first

Do not mix instructions and configuration from different SRS generations. Pick a stable release or a pinned container tag, then use that version’s documentation and example configuration throughout. SRS v7 documentation is marked unstable, while the project’s moving develop branch is not a reproducible release target. Current project materials recommend Docker; the v7 RTMP documentation also shows a Docker path. The older Ubuntu 20 build instructions apply specifically to the documented SRS v4 workflow, not automatically to current releases.

Approach Useful when Plan for
Docker with a pinned image tag You want a repeatable deployment aligned to a documented image. Record the exact tag, map only required ports, and persist the configuration and logs you need across container replacement. Follow the selected release’s instructions.
Source build You are comfortable managing build dependencies and compiling the selected release. Use the matching branch or release guide and its prerequisites. The SRS v4 guide demonstrates cloning the 4.0release branch, entering srs/trunk, running ./configure and make, then starting SRS with a configuration file; that recipe is version-specific. See the SRS v4 build guide.

Before deployment, note your Ubuntu release and CPU architecture, selected SRS version or container tag, configuration file location, and how you will update and inspect logs. Available documentation does not establish a VPS size for a given stream workload or performance guarantee for a particular provider.

Prepare YouTube credentials and the server

Get the destination for the active broadcast

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the live broadcast and open its streaming settings.
  2. Copy the URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. The key tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it; treat it as a password. YouTube explains stream keys in its streaming setup guidance.
  3. Use the RTMPS URL if your SRS forwarding client or configuration supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection. Retrieve the exact URL from the active Live Control Room stream rather than relying on a saved example. See YouTube’s encoder settings and RTMPS connection guidance.

Limit network exposure

Allow inbound traffic only for the protocol and port your upstream publisher actually uses. SRS examples commonly use RTMP on port 1935; broader examples can include HTTP or API ports, but that is not a reason to expose every service publicly. Keep management endpoints restricted. The VPS also needs outbound connectivity to the YouTube ingest destination for forwarding. Match firewall rules to the ports in your selected SRS configuration and container mappings; see the SRS getting-started documentation.

Configure the incoming feed and YouTube forward

  1. Start SRS with the selected release’s configuration. Confirm the process or container is running and that the configuration enables the incoming publishing path and forwarding behavior you intend to use.
  2. Point your source at SRS. Configure OBS, FFmpeg or another publisher to send to the VPS endpoint and the application/stream name defined in the SRS configuration. An example URL shape is rtmp://<server>/live/<stream>; replace it with the actual host and path for your setup. SRS documentation illustrates publishing with OBS and FFmpeg, but the path is configuration-dependent.
  3. Set SRS’s forwarding destination. Enter the exact YouTube URL and stream key for the active broadcast in the configuration method supported by your selected SRS version. Prefer the RTMPS destination when supported.
  4. Protect the key. Do not publish it in tutorials, screenshots or logs, or leave it in shell history or files accessible to other users. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the forwarder.
  5. Start the publisher, then check YouTube. Confirm that SRS accepts the incoming feed and forwards it. Wait for YouTube’s preview and check stream health before selecting Go Live. YouTube’s encoder flow recommends checking the preview before publishing.

Keep the YouTube destination current for each broadcast: the active stream’s URL and key, rather than a generic tutorial value, determine where YouTube accepts the feed.

Set encoder quality and test the whole route

Configure the encoder for a stable output supported by your source, SRS path and YouTube settings. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS; lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video codecs; allows frame rates up to 60 fps; and lists AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table before a broadcast because recommendations can change.

For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube’s table lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a measured VPS bandwidth requirement. Allow headroom for protocol overhead and network variation, and test the actual route rather than assuming a VPS plan’s advertised bandwidth guarantees a stable feed.

  • Test with representative movement and sound, not just a static screen.
  • Check the YouTube preview and stream-health messages before going live.
  • For 4K/2160 streams, YouTube says the low-latency option is unavailable and latency is set to normal.
  • Do not infer viewer delay from SRS settings alone. Encoding, the source-to-VPS and VPS-to-YouTube paths, YouTube processing and viewer buffering all affect end-to-end latency.

Choose an India VPS location by measuring your route

There is no universally best VPS city or provider for every streamer in India established by the available evidence. A nearby server is not automatically the most stable route to YouTube’s ingest service, and no verified current ingest-region map here supports a blanket regional recommendation.

Test candidate locations from the actual source location. Compare connection stability, packet loss and round-trip behavior between source and VPS, then check VPS-to-YouTube preview and stream health. If the encoder itself runs on the VPS, assess that server’s outbound route separately. Also compare bandwidth allowance, egress policy, price and availability for the providers you are considering; these vary by provider and plan.

Troubleshoot common setup failures

Symptom Likely checks and fixes
Publisher cannot connect to SRS Confirm SRS is running with the intended configuration, the required inbound port is allowed, and the host, application and stream name match the configured path.
SRS receives video but YouTube shows no preview Check that the forwarder targets the active broadcast’s exact URL and current key, that outbound connectivity works, and that the selected SRS version’s forwarding configuration is correct.
RTMPS connection or SSL error Verify the exact RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and check the port and connection requirements in YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance. Confirm the chosen SRS forwarding method supports that destination.
YouTube reports poor stream health Check the encoder’s bitrate, CBR mode, codec and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current recommendations; test representative motion and audio, then examine the source-to-VPS and VPS-to-YouTube links for instability.
The stream key may have been exposed Reset the key in Live Control Room and replace it in the SRS forwarding configuration before restarting the route.
Viewers report delay Separate relay delay from YouTube processing and player buffering. A legacy SRS low-latency example is not proof of end-to-end YouTube latency; measure the actual path and viewer playback conditions.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Only send video and audio you have the rights and permissions to broadcast. Check YouTube’s current live-stream policies and any applicable music, footage or performance licenses before scheduling a stream. A technically healthy relay does not make copyrighted or otherwise disallowed material permissible. YouTube may interrupt or restrict a broadcast if its policies are violated; review the YouTube live streaming restrictions and the terms that apply to your content.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel built from uploaded videos rather than relaying a live camera or encoder feed, StreamNeo is a different, simpler route. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing at home has to stay on. It is YouTube-only and does not go live from a camera.

  • Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers.
  • The first day is free with no card; one free day per account.

The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo pricing, then start your free day.

Can I reuse one YouTube stream key?

Use the URL and key shown for the active broadcast in Live Control Room; do not assume a saved key or destination is appropriate for every stream.

Can SRS guarantee low viewer latency?

No. End-to-end delay depends on encoding, both network legs, YouTube processing and viewer playback, not SRS configuration alone.
