To personalize recognition, add uncommon terms to its vocabulary; to reduce pickup of nearby voices and background noise, configure Voice Isolation. These are separate features, not one profile wizard.
Why the Time & language > Speech path is misleading
Microsoft’s general Windows voice-recognition guidance includes microphone setup under Settings > Time & language > Speech and training steps for the older Windows Speech Recognition (WSR). But Microsoft says Voice access replaced WSR for Windows 11 version 22H2 and later in September 2024. The old WSR training wizard should not be presented as a current Windows 11 custom-profile feature.

For current Windows 11 voice commands and dictation, use Voice access. Its personalization options address particular needs—such as uncommon words or noise filtering—rather than creating a single custom recognition profile.

Set up Voice access in Windows 11
- Open the feature. Select Start > Settings > Accessibility > Speech and turn on Voice access. You can also search for “voice access” from Start. Microsoft lists Windows 11 version 22H2 and later as supported. See Microsoft’s Voice access setup steps.
- Download the language files. The first-time setup needs an internet connection to download files for the selected language. After setup, Microsoft says Voice access can be used offline.
- Choose and configure a microphone. Follow the setup prompts to select and configure an input device. If your existing microphone works, buying new hardware is not a standard requirement. Microsoft also documents microphone selection for voice input in its setup guidance.
- Confirm language availability. Voice access has its own supported-language list, and Windows speech components are not available for every Windows language. Check the language options in Voice access or Windows before troubleshooting the microphone. Microsoft explains language and speech-component options in its language and input-layout guidance.
Add custom words for names and uncommon terms
If Voice access struggles with a person’s name, a specialist term, or another difficult-to-pronounce word, use Add to vocabulary. Microsoft describes this as a way to bias recognition toward added words; it is not a speaker-training profile.

Use the Add to vocabulary option in Voice access settings or help, or say “Add to Vocabulary” as a voice command. For the feature’s controls and language options, see Microsoft’s Voice access getting-started guide.
Configure Voice Isolation to filter nearby voices
Voice Isolation addresses a different problem from custom vocabulary: it uses a voice signature to help distinguish your voice from other speakers and background noise.

- Open the Voice access bar and select Settings.
- Go to Improve speech recognition and select Voice Isolation.
- Complete the brief setup and model download.
Microsoft says voice-signature creation, storage, and processing happen on the device, and recordings are not uploaded or shared. You can later manage Voice Isolation to rerecord or delete the voice recording. See Microsoft’s Voice Isolation instructions.

Privacy depends on the speech feature
Do not assume every Windows speech feature handles voice data the same way. Microsoft distinguishes device-based speech recognition, which it says processes voice locally, from online speech recognition, which sends voice data to Microsoft to provide the service and create transcriptions. Voice access’s initial language download and Voice Isolation’s model download are setup requirements; they do not by themselves establish that all subsequent speech processing is online. Microsoft outlines the distinction in its speech and privacy information.
