1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo set up the Sony WH-1000XM6, hold its power button for about two seconds or longer until the blue indicator flashes, then select WH-1000XM6 in your phone or computer’s Bluetooth settings. On the first startup after purchase, Sony says the headset enters pairing mode automatically. For Android and iPhone, Sony recommends the Sony | Sound Connect app, while Windows and Mac users normally pair from the computer’s Bluetooth controls.
After a device is paired once, you do not need to repeat the registration. Reconnect it from that device’s Bluetooth menu. If you want the headset connected to both a phone and computer, enable Connect to 2 devices simultaneously in Sound Connect and stop audio on the first device before trying to play from the second.

What you need before pairing
Have the headset, the source device you want to use, and enough battery for setup. The source device is the phone, tablet, computer, television, or other Bluetooth product that will send audio to the headphones.
- Keep the headset close to the source device during the first connection.
- Turn on Bluetooth on the source device. The wording and location of this control vary by Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS versions.
- If you plan to use two sources at the same time, decide which two devices should remain connected. Multipoint is intended for two simultaneous connections.
- Install or update Sony | Sound Connect if you want Sony’s recommended mobile setup path or multipoint controls.
Sony’s model-specific Help Guide separates instructions for Android, iPhone, Windows 11, Windows 10, Mac, and other Bluetooth devices because each source device supplies its own Bluetooth menus. The headset capability is not different between those sections; the on-screen steps are.

Start the WH-1000XM6 pairing process
- Put the headset near the device you want to pair.
- Press and hold the power button for about two seconds or longer.
- Keep holding until the blue indicator flashes.
- On the first startup after purchase, wait for the headset to enter pairing mode automatically.
- Open the source device’s Bluetooth settings and look for WH-1000XM6.
- Select the headset and accept the pairing request if the device displays one.
Pairing is the initial registration between the headphones and a source device. Once that registration succeeds, the source device is remembered and does not need to be paired again unless its Bluetooth records are removed or the headset is otherwise reset.
Pair the headphones with an Android phone
Recommended method: Sony | Sound Connect
- Turn on Bluetooth in the Android phone’s settings.
- Open Sony | Sound Connect.
- Follow the app’s instructions to add or connect the WH-1000XM6.
- When the headset appears, choose it and approve any Android pairing prompt.
- Complete any optional app permissions or device personalization screens only after the Bluetooth connection is established.
Sony recommends Sound Connect for connecting the WH-1000XM6 to an Android smartphone. The app can also expose headset connection options, including the setting used for two-device multipoint.
Use Android Bluetooth settings if the app is unstable
An app connection is not the only way to pair. If Sound Connect does not find the headset or its connection process repeatedly stalls, leave the app and use Android’s own Bluetooth controls:
- Open the phone’s Settings and then its Bluetooth or connected-devices area. The exact label depends on the Android manufacturer and version.
- Make sure Bluetooth is enabled.
- With the headset’s blue indicator flashing, select WH-1000XM6 under available devices.
- Accept the pairing request.
- Return to Sound Connect after the phone reports that the headset is connected.
If the WH-1000XM6 is already listed as a saved device, tap its entry to reconnect instead of choosing a new-device search. Do not delete the saved entry merely because the app is slow; removal creates a new pairing task.

Pair the headphones with an iPhone
Recommended method: Sony | Sound Connect
- Open the iPhone’s Bluetooth settings and switch Bluetooth on.
- Launch Sony | Sound Connect.
- Use the app’s add-device or connect flow and select the WH-1000XM6 when it appears.
- Approve the iPhone pairing prompt if one is shown.
- Wait until the app and iPhone both show the headset as connected.
Sony recommends the same Sound Connect approach for iPhone users. The app is useful after pairing because it contains the control for connecting two devices simultaneously.
Use iPhone Bluetooth settings when app setup fails
- Open Settings > Bluetooth on the iPhone.
- With the headset in pairing mode, find WH-1000XM6 in the device list.
- Tap the headset name and accept the pairing request.
- After the iPhone shows a connected status, reopen Sound Connect if you want its connection settings.
Apple changes small interface details across iOS releases, so the labels you see may differ slightly. The essential sequence is to enable Bluetooth, put the headphones in pairing mode, and select the model name.
Connect the WH-1000XM6 to a Windows 11 PC
- Open Windows 11’s Bluetooth settings from Settings. You can also use the Bluetooth control in Quick Settings to reach the same area.
- Turn Bluetooth on.
- Choose the control for adding a Bluetooth device, then select the Bluetooth device category when Windows asks what type of device you are adding.
- Hold the WH-1000XM6 power button for about two seconds or longer until the blue indicator flashes, if it is not already flashing.
- Select WH-1000XM6 from the discovered-device list.
- Wait for Windows to confirm that the headphones are connected.
Windows 11’s exact wording can change with updates. If the computer shows several nearby devices, use the full model name rather than selecting an unknown headset entry.
Connect the WH-1000XM6 to a Windows 10 PC
- Open Settings and go to the Bluetooth settings area.
- Enable Bluetooth and choose the option to add a Bluetooth or other device.
- Select Bluetooth as the device type.
- Put the WH-1000XM6 into pairing mode by holding its power button until the blue indicator flashes.
- Choose WH-1000XM6 from the results.
- Confirm that Windows reports the headset as connected before starting playback.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 use similar concepts but may place the add-device control in different panels. Follow the label shown by your installed Windows version rather than relying on a menu path copied from another release.

Pair the headphones with a Mac
- Open macOS Bluetooth settings from System Settings on newer macOS versions or System Preferences on older versions.
- Turn Bluetooth on.
- Hold the WH-1000XM6 power button for about two seconds or longer until the blue indicator flashes.
- Find WH-1000XM6 in the list of nearby devices.
- Click Connect or the equivalent control displayed by your macOS version.
- Start audio only after macOS shows the headset as connected.
If the Mac lists the headset as a previously paired device, use its reconnect control. Pairing again is unnecessary unless the saved relationship has been removed.
Pair with another Bluetooth source
The same initial process works with a tablet, television, game system, media player, or other Bluetooth source that supports headphones:
- Open the source device’s Bluetooth settings.
- Start a search for nearby devices.
- Hold the WH-1000XM6 power button until the blue indicator flashes.
- Select the model name when it appears.
- Accept the source device’s pairing prompt.
Some products provide limited Bluetooth audio controls or do not expose every headset feature. Pairing can still succeed even when the source device does not support Sony’s app or advanced settings.
Reconnect after the first pairing
Pairing and connecting are different actions. Pairing registers the headset with a source device; connecting opens the active Bluetooth link for use. Sony’s guidance says an already paired device does not need to be paired again.

- One device: Turn on the headset, open the device’s Bluetooth controls, and select the saved WH-1000XM6 entry.
- Several saved devices nearby: Choose the device you want to use from its own Bluetooth menu. A previously paired phone or computer may reconnect automatically, depending on its settings.
- The headset is not listed: Start a fresh device search while the blue indicator is flashing. If the source still cannot find it, move closer and verify that Bluetooth is enabled.
Do not repeatedly create new pairings for the same source. Reconnection is normally a selection in the saved-device list, not a new registration.
Use multipoint with two devices
The WH-1000XM6 supports simultaneous connections to two devices. A common example is a phone for calls and a computer for work audio. The headset can remain linked to both, but only one source normally supplies audible playback at a time.
Turn on the two-device option
- Open Sony | Sound Connect on a phone that is already connected to the headset.
- Find the connection or device settings for the WH-1000XM6.
- Enable Connect to 2 devices simultaneously.
- Follow the app’s prompt to add the second device if it is not already paired.
- Pair or reconnect the second device through its own Bluetooth settings.
The option must be enabled in Sound Connect before expecting the headset to maintain two active source connections. The precise screen arrangement can vary with the app version, but the setting name is the important reference.
Switch playback from one device to the other
- Pause or stop audio on the device currently playing.
- Close the audio application on that first device.
- Start playback on the second device.
- If the second device remains silent, open its Bluetooth controls and confirm that WH-1000XM6 is the active output.
A first device can keep a silent stream open even when you hear nothing. That background stream may prevent the headset from switching audible playback to the second connection. Stopping playback and closing the first audio app releases that hold.

Phone calls during multipoint use
Keep the phone connected if you want calls to interrupt computer audio. When the second device will not take over, first stop the phone or computer’s media application rather than immediately deleting and re-pairing devices. Re-pairing does not solve a source application that continues to hold an audio stream.

Troubleshoot pairing and connection problems
The headset does not appear in the device list
- Hold the power button for about two seconds or longer and confirm that the blue indicator is flashing.
- Keep the headset close to the source device during discovery.
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on at the source, then start a new search.
- Check whether the headset is already saved under paired devices. If it is, select that entry to reconnect.
- If another nearby device has connected to the headset, disconnect it there before attempting a new first-time pairing.
Sound Connect cannot complete setup
Use the phone’s Bluetooth settings to establish the connection first. Sony specifically points users to the separate already-paired-device procedure when app-based connection is unstable. Once the phone shows the WH-1000XM6 as connected, reopen Sound Connect for app settings.
The phone or computer says it is connected, but there is no audio
- Confirm that WH-1000XM6 is selected as the active audio output, not merely listed as a remembered Bluetooth device.
- Pause audio on other paired sources, especially when multipoint is enabled.
- Close the first device’s audio application; a silent stream can continue to hold the connection.
- Start playback again after the source shows the headset as connected.
The second multipoint device will not play
- Open Sound Connect and verify that Connect to 2 devices simultaneously is enabled.
- Stop playback on the first source.
- Close the first source’s audio application completely.
- On the second source, select WH-1000XM6 as the active Bluetooth output.
- Start playback again.
This sequence addresses the specific failure in which the first device keeps a silent stream open. Repeating the pairing process without closing that application may leave the same blockage in place.

The headset reconnects to the wrong device
Open Bluetooth controls on the device you actually want to use and select the saved WH-1000XM6 entry. If two devices are connected through multipoint, stop media on the unwanted source and close its audio app before starting playback on the preferred one.
Which Sony instructions should you use?
Use the Android or iPhone procedure for mobile setup, the matching Windows 11 or Windows 10 section for a PC, and the Mac section for macOS. Use the “other Bluetooth device” path when the source is a television, tablet, or accessory with its own Bluetooth menu. Sony’s model-specific Help Guide includes separate procedures for all of these platforms, and its manuals page lists the Help Guide, setup guide, and reference guide. The Help Guide release date listed by Sony is June 29, 2026.
Sony also maintains a WH-1000XM6 troubleshooting page, last modified September 8, 2026. Because phone and computer interface labels change with operating-system updates, use the current menus shown on your device while following the pairing sequence above.
When to use one connection versus two
- Choose one connection when you mainly listen on one phone or computer. It is the simplest arrangement and avoids audio being held by another source.
- Choose multipoint when you regularly move between a phone and computer and need both available without repeating pairing.
- Temporarily disable the second source when troubleshooting. A single active connection makes it easier to identify whether the problem is pairing, output selection, or an application holding a silent stream.
The headset’s setup does not require a special pairing method for each platform. What changes is the source device’s Bluetooth interface and, for multipoint, whether Sound Connect’s two-device option is enabled.
