What you need before setup
You need the Sonos Ace Ultra headphones, an iOS or Android phone or tablet, and the Sonos app. A separate cable or accessory is not required for Bluetooth pairing or everyday sound adjustments. Sonos says compatible USB-C to USB-C and USB-C to 3.5 mm cables are included with Ace Ultra. Third-party USB-C to 3.5 mm cables are not compatible with the Ace Ultra line-in connection.

- Charge the headphones for a few minutes if they are new, completely flat or have been stored for a long time.
- Keep the phone close to the headphones during pairing.
- Install or update the Sonos app before adding the headphones.
- Use Wi-Fi only when you are setting up Sonos-system or home-theater features; ordinary Bluetooth playback does not require a Sonos speaker.
The setup has two separate jobs. Bluetooth establishes the direct audio connection to the phone or tablet. The Sonos app then registers the headphones, installs available updates and exposes settings that are not part of the phone’s Bluetooth menu. If you only want to listen to music or take calls, Bluetooth may be enough; if you want EQ, Noise Control customization or home-theater functions, complete both stages.

Bluetooth pairing is the first step, even if you plan to use the Sonos app afterward.
#1 Best Overall
- Sonos-designed driver for deep, rich, detailed sound.
- High-resolution wireless audio with ultra-low latency.
- Up to 2x more Active Noise Cancellation than Sonos Ace.
- Up to 35 hours of battery with ANC on.
- Adaptive EQ tunes the sound based on your fit and movement.
- Find the Power/Bluetooth button on the left earcup.
- Press and hold the button until the status light flashes blue. A flashing blue light indicates that the headphones are ready to pair.
- On the phone or tablet, open the operating system’s Bluetooth settings.
- Select the Sonos Ace Ultra headphones from the available-device list.
- Wait for the status light to turn solid blue. Sonos identifies a solid blue light as the successful-pairing state.
You can now play audio through Bluetooth. Continue with app setup to register the headphones, install updates and expose the complete set of controls.
If the headphones do not appear
- Confirm that the light is flashing blue; if it is not, hold the Power/Bluetooth button again until pairing mode starts.
- Move the phone closer and make sure Bluetooth is enabled in the phone’s settings.
- Give the headphones a short charge and repeat the pairing sequence.
- If the headphones were previously connected to another device, disconnect them there before trying again.
A solid blue light confirms the pairing step, but it does not mean that Sonos app registration is complete. Treat the Bluetooth screen and the Sonos app as separate checkpoints.
Add Ace Ultra in the Sonos app
The path differs depending on whether the app is new to you or already controls a Sonos system.
First-time Sonos app setup
- Open the Sonos app on your iPhone, iPad or Android device.
- When the setup screen appears, choose Headphones.
- Follow the prompts to add and register Ace Ultra.
- Allow the app to complete any available headphone update before leaving setup.
Adding headphones to an existing Sonos system
- Open the Sonos app and select Settings.
- Scroll to the Headphones section.
- Choose Add Headphones.
- When the setup card appears, select Add.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to finish setup, registration and updating.
App setup is not a replacement for Bluetooth pairing. The headphones can play Bluetooth audio without the app, but the app is required for the full settings experience. Sonos app menus and labels can change with app and firmware releases, so use the closest current label if your screen differs slightly.
What the app adds
Once Ace Ultra appears in the app’s Headphones section, you can reach the headphone-specific settings rather than relying only on the phone’s volume and Bluetooth controls. This is where Sonos places EQ, Noise Control, Hardware Controls, and the optional home-theater setup. Updating during setup is important because the available controls and menu labels can depend on the installed app and headphone firmware.
Adjust the equalizer (EQ)
EQ changes the tonal balance of music, video and other Bluetooth audio. Sonos does not specify one universally correct curve, so adjust the sliders for your own headphones, hearing preference and content.
Standard EQ path
- Open the Sonos app.
- Open Settings.
- In the Headphones section, select your Ace Ultra.
- Choose Sound, then EQ.
- Move the available EQ sliders and listen for the change while audio is playing.
Make small changes rather than moving every control at once. For example, adjust one band, listen to a familiar track, then decide whether another change is needed. This keeps it clear which adjustment affected voices, bass or treble. There is no official “best” EQ curve to copy, and the right setting can differ between spoken audio, music and films.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the optional EQ Shortcut
- In the Sonos app, open Account.
- Choose App Preferences.
- Enable EQ Shortcut.
- Start playback and tap the volume slider to reveal the EQ shortcut.
If the shortcut is not visible, return to the headphone settings path above. The standard EQ controls remain available even when the shortcut is disabled or unavailable in your app version. The shortcut changes how you reach EQ; it does not replace the headphone setup or Bluetooth connection.
Rank #2
- Sonos-designed driver for deep, rich, detailed sound.
- High-resolution wireless audio with ultra-low latency.
- Up to 2x more Active Noise Cancellation than Sonos Ace.
- Up to 35 hours of battery with ANC on.
- Adaptive EQ tunes the sound based on your fit and movement.
Choose a Noise Control mode
Ace Ultra provides three documented Noise Control modes:
| Mode | What it does | When it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Noise Canceling | Blocks external sound using active noise cancellation. | Flights, trains, offices or other situations where you want less outside noise. |
| Aware Mode | Blends some ambient sound with your audio. | Hearing announcements or staying aware of nearby activity while listening. |
| Off | Disables both Noise Canceling and Aware Mode. | When you want neither processing mode enabled. |
Change the mode in the app
- Open the Sonos app and select the headphones.
- Choose Noise Control.
- Select Noise Canceling, Aware Mode or Off.
Noise Canceling and Aware Mode are not the same setting. Noise Canceling reduces outside sound, while Aware Mode intentionally mixes some of it back in. Off disables both modes, so choose it when you want neither form of processing.
Choose which modes the button cycles
- Open the headphone settings in the Sonos app.
- Go to Hardware Controls, then Noise Control.
- Select the modes you want the Noise Control button to cycle through.
- Keep at least two modes selected; Sonos requires a minimum of two.
Afterward, press the Noise Control/Voice Assistant button on the headphones to move through the selected modes. If you select only two modes, each press alternates between those two instead of cycling through all three. If a mode seems to be missing from the button, check this selection list before assuming the headphones are malfunctioning.
Sidetone and Adaptive Cancellation
Sidetone makes your own voice easier to hear during calls while Noise Canceling is active. Adaptive Cancellation can improve cancellation when the headphones do not fit perfectly. Availability and exact labels can vary with the current app and firmware, so follow the options shown in your headphone settings.
Learn the physical controls
Knowing which control does what avoids repeatedly opening the app.
| Control | Action | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Left-earcup Power/Bluetooth button | Press and hold until the light flashes blue | Enters Bluetooth pairing mode. |
| Left-earcup Power/Bluetooth button | Hold for 10 seconds with the USB-C cable disconnected | Forces a reboot. |
| Right-earcup Content Key | Slide | Adjusts volume. |
| Right-earcup Content Key | Press | Controls playback; one press answers or ends a call. |
| Right-earcup Content Key | Long-press during an incoming call | Declines the call. |
| Noise Control/Voice Assistant button | Press | Cycles through the Noise Control modes you selected. |
| Noise Control/Voice Assistant button | Hold | Invokes the connected Bluetooth device’s voice assistant. |
The ten-second reboot is a recovery step, not a normal power-off shortcut. Disconnect the USB-C cable before attempting it. The voice-assistant action uses the assistant associated with the connected Bluetooth device, so it depends on that device being connected.
Set up TV Audio Swap (optional)
TV Audio Swap is separate from Bluetooth listening, EQ and Noise Control. It sends television audio from a compatible Sonos home-theater speaker to the headphones. The headphones must already be set up in the Sonos app, connected to your iOS or Android device, and the home-theater speaker must have Wi-Fi enabled.

Sonos currently lists these models for TV Audio Swap: Arc, Arc SL, Arc Ultra, Beam (Gen 1), Beam (Gen 2), Beam Ultra and Ray. Compatibility can change, so verify the model shown in the current Sonos app before planning a setup. The speaker list is a requirement, not a recommendation to buy a speaker for ordinary headphone use.

Configure the swap
- Open the Sonos app and go to Settings > Headphones.
- Select your Ace Ultra.
- Under Home Theater, choose Add TV Audio Swap.
- Select the desired compatible speaker.
- Follow the prompts to complete configuration.
When television audio is playing through the home-theater speaker, either long-press the Content Key or use the Swap control in the app to move the sound to Ace Ultra. Up to two Sonos headphone units can join one TV Audio Swap session. TV Audio Swap is therefore useful for shared listening, but adding a second headphone unit changes which features are available during that session.
Spatial Audio and Dynamic Head Tracking
During a TV Audio Swap session, the app offers Spatial Audio and Dynamic Head Tracking. Sonos describes Spatial Audio as creating a spatial mix for surround or Dolby Atmos content and virtualizing stereo. Dynamic Head Tracking changes the apparent direction of the sound as you move your head.
To recenter head tracking, turn Dynamic Head Tracking off, face the direction you want to treat as the center, and turn it on again. Dynamic Head Tracking is disabled while two headphone units are connected; it returns when one unit disconnects. If you plan to use head tracking, connect only one headphone unit for that session.
Set up TrueCinema
TrueCinema captures the room acoustics and adjusts binaural rendering for virtual surround. It requires more than ordinary Bluetooth listening:
- Ace Ultra must be set up in the Sonos app and connected to the phone or tablet.
- Wi-Fi must be enabled on the home-theater speaker.
- TV Audio Swap must already be configured.
- The home-theater speaker must be one of the models Sonos lists for TrueCinema: Arc, Arc SL, Arc Ultra, Beam (Gen 1), Beam (Gen 2) or Ray.
Notice that the TrueCinema list is narrower than the TV Audio Swap list: Beam Ultra is listed for TV Audio Swap but not in the TrueCinema compatibility list. Check the exact feature and model combination rather than assuming that every TV Audio Swap speaker also supports TrueCinema.
Run the TrueCinema tuning process
- Open the Ace Ultra settings in the Sonos app.
- Open the TV Audio Swap area and select TrueCinema.
- Choose the home-theater speaker.
- Follow the in-app tuning instructions while sitting in your usual television-watching seat.
- Keep the headphones on for the entire process and avoid covering or touching their microphones.
- Minimize room noise while the app measures the environment.
Sonos states: “Sonos Ace must be worn during the entire tuning process.” After tuning, return to the same TV Audio Swap area to turn TrueCinema on or off. If you move to a different regular viewing seat or substantially change the room, the previous tuning may no longer represent the listening position; run the in-app process again when needed.
What to buy, and what not to buy
For basic setup, do not add a cable or Sonos speaker to the shopping list. Bluetooth pairing uses the phone or tablet, and the app provides EQ and Noise Control without a separate accessory. Compatible USB-C to USB-C and USB-C to 3.5 mm cables are included with Ace Ultra. A third-party USB-C to 3.5 mm cable is not compatible with the Ace Ultra line-in connection.

Troubleshoot the most common setup problems
Bluetooth works, but app controls are missing
Bluetooth playback alone does not complete app setup. Open the Sonos app, choose Headphones during first-time setup, or use Settings > Headphones > Add Headphones in an existing system. Complete registration and any offered update.
The app cannot find the headphones
Confirm that the headphones are paired to the phone, the app is open on that same device and the headphones have charge. If the connection is unresponsive, disconnect the USB-C cable and hold the Power/Bluetooth button for ten seconds to force a reboot, then repeat pairing and app setup.
The Noise Control button does not show every mode
Open Hardware Controls > Noise Control and review the selected modes. The button cycles only through the modes selected there, and at least two must be selected.

The EQ shortcut is missing
Enable it under Account > App Preferences, then start playback and tap the volume slider. If it still does not appear, use Settings > Headphones > Sound > EQ; the standard route is the dependable way to reach the sliders.
TV Audio Swap is unavailable
Check each requirement in order: the headphones must be set up in the app, the phone or tablet must be connected, Wi-Fi must be enabled on the home-theater speaker and the speaker must be on Sonos’s supported list. TV Audio Swap is not required for ordinary Bluetooth playback.
TrueCinema tuning fails or sounds wrong
- Verify that TV Audio Swap was configured first.
- Confirm that the chosen speaker is on the TrueCinema list, not merely the broader TV Audio Swap list.
- Wear Ace Ultra throughout tuning.
- Use your normal viewing seat.
- Reduce background noise and do not cover or touch the headphone microphones.
- Run the tuning again from the TrueCinema section if the first attempt was interrupted.
What is optional and what is essential?
| Goal | Required steps | Extra hardware or speaker |
|---|---|---|
| Play music or calls over Bluetooth | Charge if needed, enter pairing mode and select Ace Ultra in Bluetooth settings. | None beyond the phone or tablet. |
| Use EQ, Noise Control and app controls | Complete Bluetooth pairing, add the headphones in the Sonos app and update them. | None. |
| Swap television audio to the headphones | Complete app setup, enable Wi-Fi on the home-theater speaker and configure TV Audio Swap. | A compatible Sonos home-theater speaker. |
| Use Spatial Audio or Dynamic Head Tracking | Configure TV Audio Swap, then enable the options during a swap session. | A supported home-theater setup. |
| Use TrueCinema | Complete app setup, configure TV Audio Swap and run room tuning. | A TrueCinema-supported home-theater speaker and a quiet tuning environment. |

Why does the Noise Control button skip a mode?
The button cycles only through the modes selected under Hardware Controls > Noise Control. Select the missing mode there, while keeping at least two modes selected.
Can I use TV Audio Swap without a Sonos speaker?
No. TV Audio Swap requires a compatible Sonos home-theater speaker with Wi-Fi enabled. It is not needed for normal Bluetooth listening, EQ or Noise Control.
Can two headphones use TV Audio Swap together?
Yes. Up to two Sonos headphone units can join one TV Audio Swap session. Dynamic Head Tracking is disabled while two units are connected and returns when one disconnects.
Which speakers support TrueCinema?
Sonos lists Arc, Arc SL, Arc Ultra, Beam (Gen 1), Beam (Gen 2) and Ray for TrueCinema. Beam Ultra appears on the TV Audio Swap list but not the TrueCinema list.
Why did TrueCinema tuning fail?
Confirm that TV Audio Swap is configured first, wear Ace Ultra throughout tuning, sit in the usual viewing seat, reduce room noise and avoid covering or touching the headphone microphones.
The Bottom Line
Pair Ace Ultra in the phone’s Bluetooth settings, then finish adding and updating it in the Sonos app. Use Sound > EQ for tonal changes and Noise Control for Noise Canceling, Aware Mode or Off; select at least two modes if you want the physical button to cycle them. TV Audio Swap, Spatial Audio, Dynamic Head Tracking and TrueCinema are optional, speaker-dependent features with separate compatibility and tuning requirements.
