What you need before changing anything
Smart DNS is not a universal DNS server that you can copy from a web search. Your selected provider issues an address for its service, often after you choose Roku and a target location in the provider account. Use that exact address; an unrelated public DNS address will not reproduce the provider’s routing.

- A Smart DNS account or subscription that supports Roku, if your chosen service requires one.
- The provider-issued Smart DNS address. Some providers display one address; others provide primary and secondary values.
- Administrator access to the home router.
- A phone or computer already connected to that router.
- The router model and firmware details, in case the interface uses different labels or does not expose custom DNS fields.
Keep the provider’s setup page open while working. For example, the Private Internet Access Roku Smart DNS instructions, dated July 6, 2026, describe selecting Smart DNS, choosing Roku TV, selecting a location, and recording the displayed address. That workflow is an example, not a universal address or menu path for every provider.
How Smart DNS changes Roku traffic
When a Roku app looks up a domain, the DNS resolver normally returns the destination’s ordinary address. A Smart DNS resolver can recognize domains associated with geographic restrictions and return an address for a proxy in the relevant region instead. An academic description by Fainchtein, Aviv, Sherr, Ribaudo, and Khullar explains that the resolver identifies geofenced domains and returns proxy-server addresses located within the geofence: “Holes in the Geofence: Privacy Vulnerabilities in ‘Smart’ DNS Services” (preprint dated December 14, 2020).

Only the provider’s supported domains are normally handled this way; the router is not turning every connection into a proxy session. The technique also has important limits. According to the provider’s Roku guidance, Smart DNS does not encrypt your internet traffic and does not hide the Roku’s public IP address, unlike a VPN. Treat it as a routing and compatibility feature, not as a privacy or security replacement.
Step 1: obtain the Roku-specific Smart DNS address
Use the provider’s current device workflow
- Sign in to the Smart DNS provider you selected.
- Open its Smart DNS, device, or setup section.
- Choose Roku, Roku TV, or the closest Roku-specific option when offered.
- Select the location or region the provider supports for your use case.
- Copy the address exactly as displayed. Preserve every digit, period, and colon; do not substitute a public DNS service.
Providers differ in what they issue and how they activate it. Some bind service to the public IP address of your home connection. Smart DNS Proxy’s Roku article, published February 4, 2020, says its service may require registering the current public IP and updating that registration after the IP changes. Because that documentation is older and provider-specific, check your provider’s current instructions rather than assuming the same process applies to every service: Smart DNS Proxy’s Roku setup page.
Record the values before leaving the page
| Item | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Primary DNS | The provider’s Roku-compatible address | This is the value most routers require for the custom DNS entry. |
| Secondary DNS | A second provider value, if supplied; otherwise leave blank when the router permits it | Some providers specify a pair, while the cited Private Internet Access workflow says to leave the secondary field blank when available. |
| Account activation or IP status | Any “activated,” “registered,” or “update IP” indicator | A changed public IP can cause a provider to stop recognizing the network. |
| Selected location | The region shown in the provider account | It helps you verify that the router is using the intended configuration. |
Step 2: open your router’s administration page
- Connect the phone or computer to the same home network as the Roku. Use Wi-Fi or Ethernet, but do not do this from a separate cellular connection.
- Open a browser and enter the router’s local administration address. Common examples are
192.168.1.1and192.168.0.1, but your router may use another address. - Sign in with the router administrator credentials. These are separate from your Smart DNS account and, on many routers, separate from the Wi-Fi password.
- If neither common address opens a login page, check the router label, its mobile app, the network details on your device, or the manufacturer’s manual. Do not guess repeatedly if the router has account lockout protections.
Router interfaces are not standardized. Roku’s official networking documentation recommends consulting the router manual or manufacturer for configuration help and covers general network features rather than a universal Smart DNS path: Roku’s advanced networking support article, last updated June 19, 2026.

Step 3: locate the custom DNS fields
After signing in, look under sections named Internet, WAN, Network, Connection, or DHCP. The setting may appear under an advanced page rather than the basic Wi-Fi screen. Search the router’s built-in help for “DNS” if available.
You are looking for fields that allow manual DNS servers instead of an option such as “Get DNS automatically from ISP.” Do not change unrelated values such as the router’s LAN IP, subnet mask, gateway, MTU, or DHCP range unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically require it.
Enter the provider values
- Switch the DNS setting from automatic or ISP-provided to manual or custom, if the router requires that choice.
- Enter the Smart DNS provider’s address in Primary DNS.
- If the provider supplied a secondary address, enter it in Secondary DNS. If no secondary value was supplied and the router allows the field to remain empty, leave it blank as recommended in the cited Private Internet Access Roku workflow.
- Check the characters once more. A single transposed digit can make normal name resolution fail or send requests to the wrong service.
- Choose Save, Apply, or the equivalent button. The router may briefly disconnect every device while it applies the change.
Do not enter a Smart DNS address into a Roku network screen: Roku does not expose the direct DNS entry needed for this provider method. The router must supply the DNS settings to Roku.

Step 4: restart the network in the right order
- Wait for the router to finish applying the DNS change and restore its internet connection.
- Restart the router if its interface does not do so automatically. Use the normal reboot control when possible rather than repeatedly unplugging it during a firmware or configuration update.
- Restart the Roku device or Roku TV. A restart forces it to request network information again instead of continuing to use an earlier DNS state.
- Open the provider’s account or verification page and confirm that the service recognizes the home network, if the provider offers a status check.
- Test the intended Roku app. Check ordinary internet access as well as the specific service; a DNS change can affect general resolution even when the targeted app is unavailable.
What the router-wide change affects
DNS configured at the router is normally offered to every device that receives its network settings from that router. That can include phones, computers, game consoles, smart speakers, and televisions in addition to Roku. Smart DNS Proxy’s documentation describes the router method as a network-level change, so do not assume it applies only to the Roku.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →This also explains why the method works without a Roku-specific DNS control: the Roku simply receives the router’s DNS information through DHCP. The trade-off is scope. If you want only one device to use a service, a router-wide setting may be too broad, and the provider would need to document a supported per-device alternative.
Smart DNS versus a VPN for Roku
| Characteristic | Smart DNS on the router | VPN |
|---|---|---|
| Where it is configured in this setup | Router DNS fields; Roku has no direct entry screen for the cited method. | Depends on the VPN and router. A Roku app or a router-compatible VPN configuration would be required. |
| Encryption | Not provided by Smart DNS, according to the Private Internet Access support guide. | A VPN is designed to create an encrypted tunnel, subject to the VPN’s implementation. |
| Public IP visibility | Smart DNS does not hide the device or home connection’s public IP. | A VPN generally presents the VPN server’s IP to destinations, but exact behavior depends on the service and setup. |
| Routing model | Supported geofenced domains can resolve to provider proxy addresses; other traffic may use ordinary destinations. | Traffic is sent through the VPN tunnel according to the client or router’s routing rules. |
| Best fit | Someone who needs the provider’s supported DNS-based routing and accepts router-wide, non-encrypted behavior. | Someone whose priority is encrypted traffic or changing the apparent network location, where Roku-compatible hardware or routing is available. |
Neither method guarantees that every Roku app, catalog, or location will work. App providers can use their own DNS checks, IP databases, account rules, or technical changes. Verify support for the exact app and region with the Smart DNS provider before changing the whole network.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The router has no DNS option
Some ISP-supplied or simplified routers do not expose custom DNS fields. Confirm that you are viewing the internet/WAN configuration rather than the Wi-Fi name and password page. If the option is genuinely absent, consult the model’s manual or manufacturer. A separate home router with configurable DNS can be considered, but it is not required for everyone and compatibility remains model- and firmware-dependent. If you add another router, avoid creating an accidental double-router setup unless you understand which device should provide DHCP and DNS.
The Roku still behaves as before
- Confirm that the Roku is connected to the same router where you entered the DNS address. A guest network, extender, or mesh node may use different settings.
- Check the primary DNS value character by character against the provider account.
- Verify that the router saved the setting after rebooting; some firmware silently reverts to automatic DNS when a field is invalid.
- Restart both router and Roku again, then check the provider’s status page.
- Make sure the provider supports the particular Roku app and selected location. A successful DNS change cannot make an unsupported service work.
The provider no longer recognizes the network
Your internet provider may have assigned a new public IP address. Smart DNS Proxy’s 2020 guidance says that its registered public IP may need to be updated after such a change. This is not a universal requirement, so open the current instructions for your own provider and use its update or re-registration process if requested. Do not assume that changing the DNS address itself will update an account-bound public IP.

Different apps can use different domains and network checks. The older Smart DNS Proxy article mentions applications that force Google DNS and describes static-IP routing as a possible workaround. That advice is provider-specific and dated; do not add static routes or redirect Google DNS until your provider’s current documentation explicitly supports the exact router model and procedure. An unsupported route can break ordinary internet access for every device on the network.

Internet access breaks after saving
- Return to the router’s DNS page and check for a typo or an incomplete address.
- If the provider supplied a secondary DNS value, enter it exactly as instructed; if it did not, remove an old secondary value rather than inventing one.
- Temporarily restore automatic ISP DNS to confirm that the router and internet service themselves are working.
- Contact the Smart DNS provider if its address is correct but unreachable, and contact the router manufacturer if the firmware will not retain the setting.
You need ordinary Roku Wi-Fi help
Wi-Fi band selection, channel behavior, signal strength, and model-specific networking features are separate from Smart DNS. Roku’s networking article covers those ordinary connection topics at its advanced networking support page. Fix the basic Wi-Fi connection first; Smart DNS cannot compensate for a Roku that is not reliably connected to the router.
How to evaluate a Smart DNS service for Roku
There is no single provider address or universal compatibility list. Compare services using evidence that is specific to your device and intended app:
- Roku-specific instructions: Does the provider document Roku or Roku TV, rather than offering only generic DNS instructions?
- Address generation: Does it issue or activate a provider-specific address after you select Roku and a location?
- Supported apps and locations: Are the exact app and region listed in current provider documentation? Treat “works with streaming” as too broad without app-level confirmation.
- Public-IP handling: Does the service require registration or periodic updating when your home public IP changes?
- Router guidance: Does it explain primary and secondary DNS behavior and provide recovery instructions for common router types?
- Privacy practices: Review the provider’s current policy separately. Smart DNS itself does not encrypt traffic or conceal the public IP.
Provider documentation can change, so use the current support page at the time you subscribe. The two Roku-specific examples cited here are Private Internet Access’s July 6, 2026 guide and Smart DNS Proxy’s February 4, 2020 guide; their instructions should not be treated as interchangeable.

Safety and reversibility checklist
- Save the original automatic-DNS setting or take a screenshot before editing.
- Change only the DNS fields required by the provider.
- Expect a short interruption for devices using the router.
- Test a normal website or app after the change, not only the targeted Roku service.
- Keep the provider’s support page and your router model number available if verification fails.
- Restore automatic DNS if the service is unsupported, the router becomes unstable, or you no longer want the network-wide configuration.
The practical decision is straightforward: use the provider-issued Roku address at the router, reboot the network, and verify the exact app you care about. If the router cannot set custom DNS, obtain model-specific support or consider a configurable router; replacing equipment is not an automatic requirement.
