For most families, the cleanest setup is to manage a child’s iPhone from the adult’s iPhone through Family Sharing. The organizer or a designated parent/guardian opens Settings > Family, chooses the child, taps Screen Time, and follows the setup assistant. If Family Sharing is unavailable, Screen Time can be configured directly on the child’s iPhone. In either route, review schedules, app-use allowances, communication, content restrictions, allowed apps, and the Screen Time passcode before handing the phone back.
What you need before setting up Screen Time
Screen Time is Apple’s built-in set of controls for managing when a child can use an iPhone, which apps or categories can be used, who the child can communicate with, and what content or purchases are available. Apple describes it as managing “settings for downtime, app use, contacts, content ratings, and more” in its Family Sharing guidance.

- A separate Apple Account for the child. Apple recommends using the child’s own account rather than sharing an account with another family member. This keeps the child’s settings and approvals associated with the correct person.
- Family Sharing, if you want remote management. The adult setting controls remotely must be the Family Sharing organizer or a parent/guardian, and the child’s Apple Account must be in that family group.
- Compatible software on the family’s devices. Labels and available controls vary by iOS version. Apple’s redesigned experience is documented for iOS 27 and related current operating systems; the family-wide version requirements are explained below.
- A few minutes to decide exceptions. Before applying limits, identify apps needed for school, health, accessibility, transportation, or contacting family. Those decisions are easier to make before a schedule starts blocking them.
Age and country or region can affect both defaults and which controls appear. Treat the settings shown on your devices as authoritative rather than assuming another family’s menu will look identical.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose the right setup route
There are two supported ways to configure Screen Time. Use the first when the adult has a functioning Family Sharing group and wants to make changes from the adult’s iPhone. Use the second when the family is not using Family Sharing, cannot meet the current-version requirements, or prefers to manage settings on the child’s phone.

| Question | Family Sharing setup | Setup on the child’s iPhone |
|---|---|---|
| Where do you begin? | On the adult’s iPhone: Settings > Family, then select the child and choose Screen Time. | On the child’s iPhone, open Settings > Screen Time and follow the on-screen setup. |
| Who can manage it? | The Family Sharing organizer or a designated parent/guardian can manage the child’s settings from the adult device. | Management starts on the child’s device. Apple provides a passcode-reset route using the Apple Account used during setup. |
| What must be in place? | The child’s own Apple Account must be in the Family Sharing group, and the adult must have the required organizer or parent/guardian role. | Family Sharing is not required for the initial setup. |
| Which controls are covered? | Schedules, app use, contacts, content ratings, web content, app ratings, media content, and related restrictions. | The same core Screen Time categories can be configured, then changed later in the child’s Settings > Screen Time. |
| Best fit | A parent who wants to review or change settings without taking the child’s phone. | A family that cannot use remote management or is intentionally configuring the phone in hand. |
Set up Screen Time through Family Sharing
- Confirm the family roles. On the adult’s iPhone, make sure the child appears in the Family Sharing group and that the adult is the organizer or a parent/guardian. If the child is using another family member’s Apple Account, create or use the child’s own account before proceeding.
- Open the child’s Screen Time panel. Go to Settings > Family, select the child, tap Screen Time, and tap Continue. Follow the prompts shown for that child and the software version installed on the devices.
- Choose a use schedule. The setup assistant lets you define when the child may use the device. In Apple’s iOS 27 guide, the schedule can pause most apps and notifications outside the selected period. Review the proposed times instead of accepting them automatically.
- Add optional school hours when available. The iOS 27 flow includes an optional school-hours choice. Use it only if the times match the child’s actual school day; otherwise leave it off and create a schedule that reflects your family’s routine.
- Set app-use allowances. Select categories or individual apps that need a daily allowance. In the redesigned iOS 27 interface, Apple calls these category-based allowances Time Allowances; older interfaces and help pages call the equivalent feature App Limits. Choose the label that appears on your device.
- Review contact and communication choices. Decide who the child can communicate with and when. Check these choices alongside Downtime and app limits, because a restrictive combination can affect Messages and other communication methods.
- Apply content and purchase restrictions. Review web-content access, app ratings, media ratings, app downloads, websites, and purchase restrictions. Set each category deliberately; do not assume that an age-based default is the right setting for your child or region.
- Create a Screen Time passcode. Use a passcode the child does not know. This passcode protects changes to the limits and restrictions; it is separate from simply locking the iPhone for everyday use.
- Check allowed apps and safety settings. Keep essential health, accessibility, and emergency-related apps in the Allowed Apps list. Apple says Communication Safety and web-content limits turn on by default for children under 18 when Screen Time is set up, although the applicable age and defaults can vary by country or region. Verify what is actually enabled on your child’s phone.
After the assistant finishes, open the child’s Screen Time page again and inspect every category. The first setup is a starting point, not a substitute for checking the resulting schedule, exceptions, and communication rules.
Set up Screen Time directly on the child’s iPhone
Apple also documents an on-device route. This is useful when the adult is not managing a Family Sharing group, when the family’s devices cannot all move to the software required for the redesigned experience, or when the child’s phone is being configured in person.
- On the child’s iPhone, open Settings > Screen Time.
- Start the Screen Time setup and identify that the phone belongs to a child when the device presents that choice.
- Configure the use schedule, optional school hours if offered, and app or category allowances. Older software may use Downtime and App Limits where the iOS 27 guide uses a schedule and Time Allowances.
- Review communication limits, web content, app and media ratings, downloads, websites, and purchases.
- Add or remove apps in Allowed Apps, paying particular attention to health, accessibility, and emergency communication needs.
- Create the Screen Time passcode and associate the setup with the Apple Account when prompted. Apple says that, for on-device setup, the Apple Account can be used to reset a forgotten Screen Time passcode.
- Reopen the Screen Time page and test the important exceptions before the child begins using the phone under the new schedule.
Settings can be changed later from Settings > Screen Time on the child’s device. If the phone is later added to a Family Sharing group, review which device is being used to administer the controls so that changes are not made in two places without the other adult knowing.
Configure the controls in the order that prevents surprises
1. Schedules and Downtime
A schedule defines the periods when general use is available. Outside that period, most apps and notifications can be paused. Decide whether the schedule should cover bedtime, school, meals, or another predictable part of the day. Then inspect the exceptions: a schedule that looks reasonable on paper can still be unsuitable if a needed app is not allowed or if messages are blocked.

2. Time Allowances or App Limits
Use allowances for a selected app or category rather than treating every app identically. The iOS 27 documentation uses Time Allowances; previous interfaces use App Limits. A category allowance can affect several apps at once, so check which apps are included before relying on the daily total. If a child needs a particular educational or accessibility app, keep it available through the appropriate exception rather than placing it in a recreational category limit.
3. Communication and contacts
Communication controls determine who the child can contact and under which Screen Time conditions. Review the permitted contacts for normal use and for restricted periods. Check both the contact list and the apps used to communicate; limiting one app does not necessarily create the same rule in another.
4. Web, app, and media content
Family Sharing setup exposes controls for web content, app ratings, and media content. Use the web-content setting to decide whether access is unrestricted, limited, or restricted to an approved set where that choice is offered. Set app and media ratings to match the child’s age and your family’s standards, and separately review app downloads, websites, and purchases. Ratings and defaults are not universal: Apple notes that age and region affect some options.

5. Allowed Apps and safety features
Allowed Apps is the exception list that keeps critical functions available when a schedule or allowance would otherwise restrict them. Check health and accessibility apps explicitly. Also inspect Communication Safety and web-content limits after setup. Apple says these protections are enabled by default for children under 18 in the applicable regions when Screen Time is configured, but the age threshold and behavior can differ by country or region.

Screen Time passcodes and recovery
The passcode is what stops a child from changing the restrictions. Store it in a secure password manager or another location the child cannot access, and do not reuse a passcode the child already knows.
- Family Sharing setup: Apple says the adult can reset the Screen Time passcode using the adult device passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID.
- On-device setup: Apple says the Apple Account used during setup can reset a forgotten passcode.
If a reset option does not appear, confirm that you are using the same adult device or Apple Account associated with the original setup. Avoid repeatedly guessing the passcode; first determine whether the controls were created through Family Sharing or directly on the child’s phone.
Important Messages and emergency-communication caveat
Apple specifically warns that if Messages is not always allowed, a child may be unable to send or receive messages during Downtime or after an app limit expires. That can include messages to emergency numbers and contacts. Before relying on any bedtime or app schedule:
- Open the communication settings and confirm the contacts that must remain reachable.
- Check whether Messages is included in Always Allowed for the child’s configuration.
- Consider how the rule behaves both during scheduled downtime and after a daily allowance has been used.
- Test the result by sending a message during a controlled test period, rather than discovering the restriction during an emergency.
Keeping Messages available does not automatically make every other communication app available, so review the child’s actual contact methods as a group.

iOS 27, older versions, and mixed-device families
Apple’s current parental-controls overview describes a redesigned experience in iOS 27 and related operating systems. To use that redesigned family flow, Apple says all devices in the Family Sharing group must use the corresponding current versions, and the organizer or parent/guardian must update the family controls.
Families often have an older iPhone, iPad, or another device that cannot be updated at the same time. Apple says those families can continue with the previous Screen Time version or adjust controls directly on the child’s device. In practice, this means the menu names may differ: the newer guide may show Time Allowances while an older device shows App Limits. Do not treat a missing label as a missing capability until you have checked the older Screen Time interface.
The iOS 27 flow includes choices for apps and contacts, use schedules, optional school hours, Time Allowances, and a Screen Time passcode. Some controls and defaults depend on the child’s age and country or region, so two otherwise similar family groups may not display identical options.

The child does not appear under Family
Check that the child is signed in with the child’s own Apple Account and that the account is actually in the Family Sharing group. Also confirm that the adult account has the organizer or parent/guardian role. Without those conditions, the remote-management path will not be available.
Best Value
The menus do not match the instructions
Compare the iOS versions on the adult and child devices. The current redesign and older Screen Time interface use different labels, particularly Time Allowances versus App Limits. If the family cannot update every device, use the previous version or configure the controls directly on the child’s iPhone.
An essential app stopped working
Open Allowed Apps and inspect the relevant schedule or allowance. Health and accessibility apps may need an explicit exception. Also check whether the app is affected by a category allowance rather than an individual-app limit.
Messages stopped during downtime
Review Always Allowed, communication contacts, and the app’s allowance. Messages can be blocked during Downtime or after a limit expires unless it is allowed appropriately, including for emergency contacts.
The Screen Time passcode was forgotten
Use the recovery route that matches the original setup: the adult device passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID for Family Sharing management, or the Apple Account associated with an on-device setup. If neither route is offered, verify which account and device originally created the controls.
A practical review checklist
- The child uses a separate Apple Account and appears in the correct Family Sharing group, if remote management is intended.
- The adult managing the settings is the organizer or a designated parent/guardian.
- The schedule reflects the child’s actual school, sleep, and family routines.
- Time Allowances or App Limits cover the intended apps and categories.
- Messages and required contacts remain reachable during Downtime and after allowances expire.
- Health, accessibility, and emergency-related apps are in Allowed Apps where needed.
- Web content, app ratings, media ratings, downloads, websites, and purchases match the family’s rules.
- Communication Safety and web-content protections have been checked for the child’s age and region.
- The Screen Time passcode is private, and the correct recovery method is known.
- Every device’s software version has been considered before relying on the iOS 27 redesigned flow.
Once these checks are complete, Screen Time provides a manageable set of boundaries without requiring an additional parental-control service. Revisit the settings when the child’s age, school schedule, devices, or communication needs change.
