To schedule automatic wipes on a V Rising dedicated server, edit the persistent ServerHostSettings.json override, set ResetDaysInterval to the number of days between resets, choose DayOfReset as Any or a weekday, then restart the server. V Rising checks the schedule during startup; when the interval and weekday conditions are satisfied, it creates a fresh save and backs up the previous one.

The setting change alone does not wipe an active world. The next server restart after the scheduled date is the documented trigger, so plan a restart window, warn players, and keep a dated backup until the new season has loaded correctly.

How scheduled wipes work
V Rising treats a scheduled wipe as a save reset performed during server startup. The server reads the host settings just before it loads a save, checks whether the configured interval has elapsed, and, if the reset is due, starts a new save. The previous save is backed up as part of that operation.
There are two separate conditions:
ResetDaysIntervalspecifies how many days must pass between scheduled resets.DayOfResetoptionally restricts the reset to a particular day of the week.
With DayOfReset set to Any, the interval is the only calendar condition. With a named weekday, both the elapsed interval and the weekday requirement must be met. The weekday setting is not a clock or timer: it does not mean “wipe at 8 p.m. on Saturday.” The actual action still occurs when the server starts or restarts.

Stunlock Studios describes the behavior this way: when the server starts and is about to load a save file, it checks whether it is time to reset and start a new save file, and the previous save file is backed up. A patch announcement likewise explains that once the wipe date arrives, the next server restart triggers the wipe.
Prepare the server before changing the schedule
Stop the dedicated server
Do not edit the settings while the process is writing configuration or save data. Stop the dedicated server cleanly through your service manager, script, or hosting panel. Wait until the process has fully exited before copying files or changing JSON.

Copy the current save and the relevant settings to storage outside the live server directory. Include the date and time in the backup name, for example vrising-save-2026-10-14-prewipe. Preserve this copy until players have confirmed that the new season starts normally. A scheduled reset backs up the previous save automatically, but an independent pre-change copy gives you a recovery point if the configuration is malformed or the wrong world is reset.
Announce the restart window
Tell players the intended reset day, the approximate restart window, and whether the old season will be retained for archival purposes. Because the wipe is tied to startup, a server that remains online past its due date will not reset until you perform the restart.

The file to edit is ServerHostSettings.json. The installation’s default template is loaded first and local overrides are applied afterward, so changing the template can be overwritten or have no effect on the running instance. Use the persistent override instead.
- Stop the V Rising dedicated server and make a dated backup of the save and settings.
- Open the
Settingsdirectory under the Windows path above. - Open
ServerHostSettings.jsonin a text editor that does not add formatting or comments. - Locate
ResetDaysIntervalandDayOfReset. If they are absent, add them inside the top-level JSON object, separated from neighboring properties with commas. - Enter an integer for
ResetDaysIntervaland eitherAnyor an exact weekday name forDayOfReset. - Validate the JSON, save the file, and keep all unrelated settings intact. Do not replace the complete file with the short example unless you have deliberately recreated every other server option.
- Start or restart the dedicated server.
- After the configured date is due, inspect the startup log and server listing/status information to verify that the reset occurred and that the previous save was backed up.

Official examples for the interval include 0, 7, 14, and 37. The number is a day interval, not a number of restarts. If the server is restarted several times in one day, those restarts do not make a seven-day schedule become a seven-restart schedule.

}Setting the interval to 0 disables the scheduled-wipe feature. Keep the weekday value valid even when the interval is disabled; that avoids introducing an unrelated configuration error if you later re-enable the schedule.
Choosing the interval and weekday
The server documentation defines how the settings behave, but it does not prescribe a universal season length. Choose a value that matches how quickly your community consumes progression and how much administrative time you can give to announcements, backups, and restarts.
- Short cycles: A seven-day interval creates frequent fresh starts and suits groups that want a compact competitive season. It also requires more frequent communication and backup housekeeping.
- Two-week cycles: A 14-day interval gives players more time to build while keeping seasons easy to schedule on a regular cadence.
- Longer cycles: Values such as 37 days can support extended communities that do not want a frequent reset. A longer interval does not remove the need to monitor the due date and restart process.
Any: Use this when the exact weekday is less important than maintaining a fixed number of days between resets.- A named weekday: Use this when your community has a predictable event day. Remember that the weekday is a condition, not a time-of-day appointment.
For a public server, publish the interval, weekday rule, and expected restart window together. Saying “biweekly wipe” without clarifying the weekday and restart behavior can lead players to expect a reset while the server is still online.
Why changing the file does not wipe the server immediately
The scheduled reset check happens when the server starts and is about to load a save. Editing and saving ServerHostSettings.json while the server is running therefore changes the next startup’s behavior, not the current world in place.
The practical sequence is:
- Set the interval and weekday in the persistent override.
- Start or restart the server so it reads the new configuration.
- Allow the configured interval to elapse.
- Restart again after the due date. That restart is the documented wipe trigger.
- Confirm that a fresh save loaded and that the former save was backed up.
If you changed the schedule after the interval was already due, do not assume the save will disappear at the moment you press Save in the editor. Arrange the restart deliberately, because that is when the server evaluates the condition and acts on it.

Using a managed hosting panel
Hosted providers may expose the same host settings in a web panel rather than giving you direct access to the Windows path. Labels vary, but common wording includes “Reset Days Interval” and “Reset Day of the Week.” Before relying on a panel, confirm that it writes the native ResetDaysInterval and DayOfReset values to the server’s host settings.

Regardless of where the control appears, the game-side behavior remains the same: the interval and weekday must qualify, and a server startup is required to perform the reset.
Command-line and containerized deployments
The documented settings also have startup overrides for scripted or containerized deployments:

Use the form supported by your launcher or hosting environment. The exact command-line syntax, quoting rules, and precedence can differ between service managers, container images, and provider wrappers, so do not paste a flag intended for one launcher into another without checking how that environment passes arguments to the V Rising server.
Safe deployment pattern
- Define the interval and weekday in the environment or startup command used by the actual server process.
- Keep the persistent JSON consistent with the intended defaults, or document which source is authoritative in your deployment.
- Restart the process after changing an environment variable; a running process cannot see a new variable value retroactively.
- Review the startup log and server status after deployment to confirm that the expected values were accepted.
- Retain the pre-wipe backup even when configuration is managed as code or by a container volume.
Troubleshooting scheduled wipes
The server did not wipe on the advertised date
- Check whether the server was actually restarted after the due date. The documented trigger is the next restart, not midnight occurring while the process remains online.
- Confirm that
ResetDaysIntervalis not0. - Check that the interval was measured from the schedule the server is using, rather than from the date you edited the file.
- If a weekday is configured, verify that the qualifying day has arrived. A weekday restriction adds a second condition.
The settings appear to have no effect
- Make sure you edited the persistent override in the documented settings directory, not the installation’s default template.
- Verify that the hosting panel writes to the same host settings and that you saved or applied the panel changes.
- Check file permissions and ownership so the account running the server can read the file.
- Restart the process after saving. The startup check cannot use changes that have not been loaded.
The server fails to start after editing JSON
- Validate the file with a JSON-aware editor or validator.
- Look for a missing comma between properties, smart quotation marks, comments, or a trailing comma after the last property.
- Confirm that the interval is a JSON number such as
14, not a quoted string such as"14". - Restore the dated backup if necessary, then reapply only the two schedule properties while preserving the rest of the configuration.
The reset happened but players cannot find the old world
A scheduled reset is designed to start a fresh save and back up the previous save. Stop the server before attempting any restore, identify the backup created by the reset or your own pre-wipe copy, and preserve the new save separately. Do not overwrite both copies while investigating; keeping the fresh season and the archived season gives you a way to reverse an administrative mistake.
The panel shows a countdown but the wipe still waits
A remaining-days indicator in the server listing or status UI reflects the scheduled state, not an instruction to erase a live save immediately. If the countdown has reached its due point, perform the planned restart and then inspect the startup result. A provider’s countdown display does not change the game’s startup-based trigger.

Use this checklist before declaring a wipe complete:
- The server process was stopped cleanly before editing files.
- A dated copy of the save and settings exists outside the live directory.
- The persistent
ServerHostSettings.jsonoverride contains the intended integer interval. DayOfResetis eitherAnyor an exactly spelled weekday.- The JSON parses successfully and unrelated settings remain present.
- Players received the restart and wipe announcement.
- The restart occurred after the interval and weekday conditions were satisfied.
- The startup log or status display confirms that a new save loaded.
- The previous save backup is still available.
- Players can connect, create characters, and progress in the new season before the backup is moved to long-term storage.
Player-facing announcement template
A concise notice should state the facts that affect play, rather than only saying “wipe incoming.” For example:
Scheduled wipe: Saturday, after the server restart once the 14-day interval is due.
The restart will create a fresh save. The previous save will be backed up.
Expected downtime: [restart window]. Please log out before maintenance.Replace the bracketed maintenance window with your own time before publishing. Do not promise an exact wipe hour unless your restart automation guarantees one; the documented setting constrains a day, while the restart performs the action.
