You can use Samsung DeX on a compatible Galaxy Tab without an external monitor: DeX can open a desktop-style workspace on the tablet itself. To add a larger display, choose a wired or wireless setup only after confirming that your exact Tab model supports that mode. Touch and S Pen work without extra accessories; a compatible keyboard cover or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse make text entry and navigation more laptop-like.
Check whether your Galaxy Tab supports the DeX mode you want
DeX support differs by model and connection type. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab DeX compatibility and setup guide lists these supported model families for the modes below (Samsung US Support; verified October 3, 2026):

Samsung specifically says the Tab S9 FE, S9 FE+, S10 FE, S10 FE+, and S10 Lite do not support HDMI output. Those FE models and the S10 Lite also do not support Wireless DeX; the S10 Lite does not support standalone DeX. Check the compatibility guide for the exact model before buying a cable or adapter. Samsung notes that supported features can vary by device, region, and software version.

Start DeX on the tablet screen
Standalone DeX is the simplest way to create a laptop-like workspace without a monitor. On a supported Tab:

- Swipe down from the top-right of the screen with two fingers to open Quick Settings.
- Tap Samsung DeX. Follow any first-use prompt to start DeX.
- Use the touchscreen or S Pen, or connect a keyboard and mouse if you want physical input.
To leave DeX, open Quick Settings and tap Samsung DeX again. The names and placement of controls can vary with software version.
Android 16 and One UI 8.0: open apps as windows
Samsung’s newer home-screen workflow applies to Galaxy Tabs running Android 16 with One UI 8.0 or higher; it is not a universal instruction for older software. Open an app, then swipe down on its header bar to place it in pop-up view. Open other apps and move or resize their windows as needed. Samsung also documents switching to standalone DeX from the Home screen on this software generation.

Create separate workspaces on supported software
On a Galaxy Tab running Android 16 with One UI 8.0 or higher, Samsung says DeX supports up to four workspaces. To add one, open Recents in DeX and select the Add desktop icon, shown as a monitor with a plus sign. Switch between workspaces from Recents. If that icon is not present, your model or software may not support this workflow.

Use this option only if Samsung lists your exact Tab as supporting HDMI output. You need an HDMI display and a compatible DeX cable, HDMI-to-USB Type-C cable, or HDMI adapter. A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter is optional—not needed for standalone or wireless DeX—and its compatibility should be confirmed for your tablet.

- Connect the USB-C end to the tablet and the HDMI end to the monitor or TV.
- Unlock the tablet if prompted. On first use, tap Start to enable Full Desktop mode.
- If you see the tablet’s mirrored screen instead, open the DeX notification or tap the DeX icon in Quick Settings and switch to DeX mode.
To disconnect, use Quick Settings to exit DeX or unplug the cable.
Connect to a display wirelessly
Wireless DeX requires a compatible tablet and a supported TV or smart monitor. On the tablet, go to Settings > Connected devices > Samsung DeX > Connect wirelessly. Select the display, tap Start now, and approve the connection on the display if prompted. Keep the tablet and display close to help reduce stuttering or lag.

Samsung’s tablet guide says touchscreen displays are not compatible with DeX functionality, so do not expect a connected touch monitor to work as a DeX touchscreen. Samsung also describes wireless DeX on compatible Samsung TVs and Miracast-capable smart TVs; check the tablet-specific compatibility guide for your model before relying on a particular display.
Add keyboard and mouse input
A keyboard cover with a touchpad is the most integrated laptop-style option, provided it fits your exact Tab model. Samsung says to connect a compatible Book Cover Keyboard and tap DeX in Quick Settings; on supported covers, Fn plus the DeX key can launch it. A separate Bluetooth keyboard and mouse are alternatives. Touch, S Pen, and the on-screen touchpad remain available, so accessories are optional.

For a cable-connected display, Samsung’s keyboard and mouse guide documents Bluetooth input; it says wired keyboards and mice do not work through the DeX cable in the configuration it describes. Samsung also cautions that some tablets do not fit DeX Pad or DeX Station docks, so those legacy docks are not a default tablet accessory recommendation. Adjust DeX display and input settings
On the tablet, open Settings > Samsung DeX to see available controls. Samsung lists options that can include wallpaper, font size, resolution, rotation, and screen timeout, as well as keyboard, mouse, and touchpad settings. The available controls vary by device and software.
