The safest YouTube setup starts with a child profile in YouTube Kids, the youngest age setting that fits, and Approved Content Only when you want to choose every video or channel yourself. Then turn off search if discovery is unnecessary, set a Kids timer, use Family Link for device-wide limits, and check the active account on every phone, tablet, TV and browser. These controls reduce unwanted exposure, but they do not replace periodic review and conversations with your child.
What YouTube Kids controls can and cannot do
YouTube Kids is a separate child-focused app and web experience with profiles, age-based content settings and parental controls. Google Families Help describes it as an experience with popular children’s videos and new content delivered in a way intended to be safe and easy for children. YouTube also says the app has a full suite of parental controls so parents can customize a child’s experience.

The controls are filters and supervision tools, not a guarantee that every recommendation is suitable. Automated systems can misclassify a video, a previously acceptable channel can change, and a child may switch to regular YouTube or another signed-in account. Treat the setup as a layered system:

- Approved Content Only: replaces broad recommendations with a catalog you select.
- Search and discovery settings: limit how easily a child can look for additional content.
- Blocking: removes a specific video or channel from that profile.
- Timers: limit time in YouTube Kids; Family Link can extend supervision to the whole device.
- History and recommendation controls: help you see activity and reduce feedback from unwanted viewing.
Menu names, eligibility and available features can differ by country, device, app version and account. After making a change, open the child’s profile on the device they actually use and confirm that the setting is active.

Set up the correct parent account and child profile
Use a parent-managed account
Begin while signed in to the parent account that will remain under your control. In YouTube Kids, create a child profile or select the existing one from the profile screen. Keep the parent account password and any parent PIN private; a child who can enter the parent account can undo the restrictions.
If your child watches regular YouTube rather than YouTube Kids, use Google’s supervised-experience controls through Family Link where that option is available for the child’s age and country. Family Link is the place Google documents for managing YouTube and YouTube Kids controls alongside other Google services.
Confirm the profile before changing settings
- Open YouTube Kids and select the parent or lock icon.
- Complete the parent check, such as the displayed math question or your parent PIN.
- Select the child’s profile you intend to configure.
- Open the profile’s settings and verify the child’s name or avatar before changing any option.
Repeat this check whenever you share a tablet, use a TV app or switch between profiles. A control applied to one child profile does not automatically apply to another.
Choose the right YouTube Kids content level
YouTube Kids provides three age bands. Select the youngest setting that reasonably fits your child’s maturity, then inspect recommendations yourself. The labels are starting points, not a substitute for parental review.

To change the level, enter the parent settings, choose the child’s profile and open the content-level option. Select a band, save it, then return to the child view and sample the home screen. If the child has different needs from the age band, use Approved Content Only instead of relying on a broader setting.
Use Approved Content Only for a parent-curated catalog
Approved Content Only is the tightest selection documented in YouTube’s Kids guidance. It lets you approve individual videos, channels or collections that the child can watch. This mode is useful for a young child, a shared family tablet, a classroom-like playlist or any situation where you do not want algorithmic discovery.

Turn it on
- Open the parent settings for the child’s YouTube Kids profile.
- Choose the content-level or content-settings area.
- Select Approved Content Only.
- Search for a video, channel or collection you have reviewed and add it to the approved catalog.
- Save the selection, switch to the child view and test that an approved item plays.
Availability and the exact label can vary by account and region. If you cannot find the option, update the app, check that you are in the parent account and look for the profile’s content settings rather than the general device settings.

Maintain the approved list
Approval is not permanent quality assurance. Reopen the list periodically, remove channels your family no longer wants, and sample new uploads before approving an entire channel. A channel can change its topics, thumbnails or tone after you approve it. If a child asks for a new video, review it from the parent account before adding it.
Turn off search when discovery is not needed
Search expands the number of videos a child can find, even when age filtering remains enabled. For a curated experience, open the child’s profile settings and review the search or discovery switch. Turn search off when you want the child to choose only from the home screen and your approved catalog.
With search disabled, the child may still see the videos and channels allowed by the profile’s content level or Approved Content Only list. Turning search off is therefore a complement to content selection, not a replacement for it. If the search control is missing, its availability may depend on the child’s account, country, device or current YouTube Kids version.
Block an individual video or channel
Blocking is the quickest response to a specific item that you do not want recommended. YouTube documents controls for blocking individual videos and channels in YouTube Kids.
Block from the child view
- Find the video or channel in YouTube Kids.
- Open the item’s menu, usually represented by three dots.
- Choose the block option and complete the parent check if prompted.
- Select whether to block only that video or the entire channel, then confirm.
Blocking a video removes that item from the profile; blocking a channel is broader and prevents its current content from appearing for that profile. It does not necessarily remove copies uploaded by other channels or stop the child from seeing related topics elsewhere. For repeated problems, combine blocking with search off or Approved Content Only.

Undo an accidental block
Return to the parent settings for the same profile and open the blocked-content list. Remove the item from that list, save, and test the child view. If the item still does not appear, check that you edited the same profile and that the device has synchronized the latest settings.
Set a YouTube Kids timer and add device-wide limits
Use the YouTube Kids timer
- Open YouTube Kids and enter the parent settings.
- Select the timer option for the active child profile.
- Choose the permitted session length and start the timer.
- Let the child use the app until the timer ends, then verify that playback is locked or paused as expected.
The Kids timer governs use of YouTube Kids. It does not automatically limit games, browsers or other video apps on the device. A child who can switch to regular YouTube or another account may continue watching there.
Use Family Link for broader supervision
When you need device-wide screen-time supervision, app limits or scheduled downtime, configure those controls in Family Link for the child’s supervised Google account. Family Link can complement the Kids timer by covering other apps and the device itself. Set the same expectations in both places so the child does not receive a longer allowance simply by opening a different app.

Review history, recommendations and autoplay
Use history as a supervision signal
Parents can review recent videos and manage watch and search history from the profile controls. Check history at a regular interval that suits your family, such as once a week for a younger child or more often after a new device is introduced. Look for unfamiliar channels, repeated themes or viewing at times when the child should have been offline.
You can pause or clear watch and search history. Pausing history may reduce how much activity is visible in review and can change how recommendations are generated, so use it deliberately rather than as a privacy shortcut. Clearing history removes the record you might need to understand what the child has been watching.

Disable autoplay
Turn off autoplay in the profile’s playback settings if you want each next video to require a deliberate choice. This reduces passive, uninterrupted viewing and makes it easier to stop after one video. Confirm the switch in the child view because playback settings can be profile-specific.

Parental controls are attached to an account and profile, not to a child as an abstract identity. A child may encounter a different experience in the YouTube Kids app, the Kids web experience, regular YouTube, a supervised account, a smart-TV app or a browser.
- Phone or tablet: open the profile menu and confirm the child’s avatar before playback.
- Television: check which account is signed in and whether the TV app is showing YouTube Kids or regular YouTube.
- Browser: verify the active Google account and avoid leaving the parent account signed in.
- Shared devices: remove unused profiles and sign out of adult accounts before handing over the device.
- After an update: revisit content level, search, timer and blocked-content settings because labels or availability may change.
Perform a short test on each device: open the child profile, search for a term that should be unavailable, try a blocked channel, start a timer and confirm that an approved video behaves as expected. This catches account mix-ups that a settings screenshot cannot.

YouTube Kids is usually the better starting point when you want a smaller catalog or parent-approved list. Supervised regular YouTube may be appropriate for an older child who needs broader educational or interest-based content, provided you accept more discovery and keep reviewing activity.

A practical setup sequence for families
- Create or select the child profile from the parent account, then protect the parent account with a private password or PIN.
- Choose the youngest suitable age band and inspect the first page of recommendations.
- Decide whether discovery is acceptable. If not, enable Approved Content Only and add a small starter catalog.
- Turn off search when your child should not browse beyond the selected catalog.
- Block unsuitable videos or channels as soon as you encounter them.
- Set the Kids timer for the child’s normal session length.
- Configure Family Link if you also need app limits, downtime or device-wide screen-time rules.
- Review history and autoplay; disable autoplay and choose whether history should remain available for supervision.
- Repeat the check on every device, including TVs and browsers, and confirm the active account each time.
Troubleshoot common control failures
The child still sees videos you did not approve
Check whether the profile is actually in Approved Content Only mode, whether the child switched to another profile, and whether the device opened regular YouTube. Confirm the account on the playback screen, then test again after synchronizing or restarting the app.
Search is still available
Re-enter the parent settings for the exact child profile and look for the search or discovery control. If the option is unavailable, the account, region or device may not support it. Use Approved Content Only and Family Link as additional layers rather than assuming search can be disabled everywhere.
A blocked channel appears again
Make sure you blocked the channel, not only one video, and that the block was made from the parent controls. Copies, reuploads and other channels can still contain similar material, so block each source or move the profile to a curated catalog.
The timer does not stop all screen use
The YouTube Kids timer applies to Kids viewing, not every app. Configure Family Link’s device screen-time, app-limit or downtime settings when you need the whole device to stop or restrict access.
History does not show what you expected
Check whether watch or search history was paused or cleared, whether the child used another account, and whether viewing occurred in regular YouTube. Restore the intended history setting and verify the profile on each device.
Teach the child what to do when a video feels wrong
Technical controls work better when a child knows how to respond. Explain that they should stop playback and tell a trusted adult if a video is frightening, confusing, asks for personal information or encourages secret contact. Do not ask a child to investigate a suspicious channel alone. Review the report or block action together so the child learns that seeking help is the correct response, not a punishment.
Keep the parent PIN and account credentials private, review recommendations after major app or device updates, and adjust the content level as the child’s age and judgment change. Google and YouTube describe these settings as tools for customization and supervision; ongoing parent involvement remains necessary because no filter can evaluate every future recommendation perfectly.
