To use a disc you own, first prepare the computer according to RPCS3’s current Quickstart, install the PlayStation 3 system software through that guide, create a game dump from your own disc with a compatible Blu-ray reader, and then add that dump to RPCS3. The exact firmware and disc-dumping commands are version- and hardware-dependent, so use the official Quickstart for those steps rather than relying on an old tutorial.
What you need before starting
A successful setup has four separate pieces: a supported operating system, hardware that meets the current requirements, the RPCS3 application, and a legally obtained copy of the PlayStation 3 system software and game data. RPCS3’s project documentation identifies Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD as supported platforms. It directs new users to its current Quickstart for system requirements and setup, and recommends keeping the graphics driver up to date.

- A supported computer: Use one of the operating systems listed by the project and check the current Quickstart for processor, memory, graphics, storage, and operating-system requirements. Requirements can change as the emulator develops.
- Current graphics drivers: Update the driver supplied by your GPU manufacturer before diagnosing emulator performance. An outdated driver can make an otherwise valid setup appear broken.
- RPCS3: Obtain the emulator from the official RPCS3 project rather than from an unofficial repack. Keep the release and its documentation together so that the instructions match your version.
- PlayStation 3 system software: RPCS3 requires system software installed according to the current official Quickstart. Do not use a firmware package from an unknown download site.
- Your own game disc and a compatible Blu-ray reader: The reader must be able to read the disc and be supported by the project’s current dumping instructions. No specific drive model is established here, so confirm compatibility before buying hardware.
- Free storage: A disc dump can require substantially more space than a small installer. Reserve room for the dump, updates or patches you legally possess, emulator files, and backups.
Check your game before buying hardware or spending time
Open RPCS3’s compatibility database and search for the exact title, region or release where the listing distinguishes them, and edition. Read the status, the date of the latest update, and every configuration note attached to the entry. The project says that compatibility results change frequently, so an old status is not a permanent prediction.
The database’s Playable category means that a game is completable with playable performance and without game-breaking glitches. It is a category for the title under the tested conditions, not a guarantee that the same result will occur on every computer, operating-system version, graphics driver, or emulator build.

| What to inspect | Why it matters | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Game title and edition | Different releases can have different data and issues. | Match the disc you own, including region or edition details shown in the entry. |
| Current status | It is the project’s latest broad compatibility assessment. | Treat “Playable” as an informed indication, not a hardware guarantee. |
| Last-update date | Results are subject to frequent change. | Prefer a recently updated entry when deciding whether to proceed. |
| Configuration notes | Some games need documented settings, workarounds, or specific observations. | Record the notes before changing settings so you can reproduce the listed configuration. |
If your title has no entry, has an old entry, or is listed with severe problems, do not assume that a faster computer or a different disc reader will solve an emulator bug. Check again after a new RPCS3 release and read the project’s current notes.
Install RPCS3 using the current Quickstart
1. Confirm the operating system and requirements
Identify whether you are running Windows, Linux, macOS, or FreeBSD, then use the operating-system section of the official Quickstart. Follow the requirements for that platform exactly; package formats, permissions, graphics stacks, and update procedures differ between them.
2. Update the graphics driver
Install the newest driver offered for your graphics hardware by its manufacturer, restart if the installer requests it, and confirm that the operating system reports the new version. Do this before changing emulator settings. If you later update the driver, retest the game with the same RPCS3 configuration so you can distinguish a driver change from an emulator change.

3. Obtain and launch the official build
Download the build intended for your operating system from the RPCS3 project and extract or install it using that platform’s normal method. Avoid modified packages that bundle firmware, game files, “performance fixes,” or unknown DLLs. On first launch, note the application version; compatibility notes can depend on the version being used.
4. Install PlayStation 3 system software
Use the firmware source, verification checks, and installation sequence documented in the current official Quickstart. Those details are not stable enough to reproduce safely from an undated guide, and the available project material does not establish a current menu path or command. If RPCS3 reports that system software is missing or invalid, return to the Quickstart and recheck the file, its source, and the installation result instead of downloading a replacement from a third-party site.
Dump the game from your own disc
RPCS3 does not turn a physical disc into a playable game merely by inserting it. The disc normally has to be read and converted into the format required by the emulator. This is commonly called dumping or backing up the disc.

Use only a disc you are entitled to use
Make the dump from a game disc you own or are otherwise authorized to use, and follow the law that applies where you live. Do not download a pre-made game image, request a link to one, or share your dump. A downloaded image can be unlawful, modified, incomplete, or infected even when it has the correct title.

You need a Blu-ray reader that can read the particular PlayStation 3 disc and that is supported by the current RPCS3 dumping documentation. The available project information does not identify a universal list of compatible drive models. A drive that reads ordinary Blu-ray movies or computer data is not automatically suitable for every PlayStation 3 disc workflow.
If you are considering a USB reader, check the current Quickstart or linked project documentation for model and firmware requirements before purchasing. Do not treat an anonymous marketplace listing or an old forum post as confirmation.
Follow the current dumping procedure
Use the exact tool, operating-system instructions, disc-identification checks, and output-format requirements in RPCS3’s current Quickstart. The available documentation for this assignment does not substantiate a particular command, drive utility, folder layout, or disc-dumping sequence, so supplying one here would risk giving you a procedure that no longer works or damages the dump.
During the process, keep the original disc inserted until the tool reports completion, save the output to a drive with enough free space, and do not rename or edit files until you have verified the dump as the Quickstart describes. If the procedure offers a verification or checksum step, complete it before attempting installation.
Add the dump to RPCS3
Once you have a verified dump, use the current Quickstart’s game-import instructions for your RPCS3 version. The project can change labels and locations between releases, so do not rely on a menu path copied from an older video. Point RPCS3 at the dump’s top-level game location exactly as the guide specifies; selecting an individual file when the guide expects a folder, or selecting a parent folder that contains several unrelated games, can prevent detection.

- DISC Encryption II for password-controls and hidden-file functionality
- Close any disc-dumping utility that still has the source disc or output locked.
- Check that the dump completed and that its files were not moved, compressed, or renamed after verification.
- Open RPCS3 and follow the current Quickstart’s documented method for importing or scanning a game location.
- Wait for RPCS3 to finish its scan, then identify the title by its exact name and edition.
- Open the game’s information or configuration view only after it appears in the library, and apply settings specifically documented for that title.
If the title does not appear, first confirm that you selected the location expected by the Quickstart and that the dump contains the complete directory structure. Do not “repair” missing files by downloading an image from elsewhere.

Start with the documented baseline
Use RPCS3’s default configuration unless the compatibility entry for your exact game says otherwise. Changing several options at once makes it difficult to identify the cause of a problem and can create new failures that the game’s notes do not cover.
Apply only game-specific notes you can verify
If the compatibility entry lists a required setting, reproduce that setting and record the RPCS3 version, graphics-driver version, and operating system. If a note refers to an older build or an issue marked fixed, test the current default first. Compatibility entries are living records, not immutable recipes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAllow the first run to finish its normal preparation
The first launch can perform one-time compilation or cache work. Let it complete without repeatedly force-closing the emulator. If the game reaches its menu, quit normally and launch it again before judging steady-state behavior. Record whether a problem occurs during startup, in a menu, during a particular scene, or only after loading a save; that distinction is more useful than a general report that the game is “slow.”
Troubleshoot by symptom
RPCS3 will not start
- Recheck that your operating system is supported and that you installed the build for the correct platform.
- Update the graphics driver, restart the computer, and try the official build without third-party overlays or modified libraries.
- Compare your setup with the current Quickstart instead of applying random settings from an old guide.
RPCS3 says system software is missing or invalid
- Return to the official Quickstart and repeat the firmware download and verification process from its current source.
- Confirm that the file was not renamed, truncated, or altered during download.
- Do not substitute a firmware file from a game-image site or an unofficial mirror.
The game is not detected
- Confirm that the dump finished successfully and that its directory structure matches the format required by the Quickstart.
- Check that RPCS3 was directed to the correct top-level location, not a single file or an unrelated parent directory.
- Verify that the game entry you searched matches the disc’s edition and region.
The dump fails or the reader cannot read the disc
- Inspect the disc for dirt, scratches, or visible damage and retry according to the documented procedure.
- Check the project’s current list of supported reader models and required drive firmware; no model should be assumed compatible without that check.
- Try a different USB port or cable only if the reader’s documentation permits it, then repeat verification. A completed-looking folder is not proof of a usable dump.
The title launches but performs poorly or freezes
- Check the compatibility entry’s current status, update date, and configuration notes before changing settings.
- Confirm that the graphics driver is current and that you are testing the same RPCS3 version referenced by the note, when one is specified.
- Test with the documented baseline and change one setting at a time. If the entry is not “Playable,” regard the limitation as a compatibility issue rather than proof that your dump is bad.
How to decide whether to continue
Use this decision sequence before spending money on another drive or replacing computer hardware:
- Compatibility first: If the exact title has a current Playable entry, continue with the official setup and notes. If it has a problematic status, read the explanation and decide whether its limitations are acceptable.
- Software integrity second: Verify the RPCS3 build, system software installation, graphics driver, and dump using the current Quickstart.
- Hardware third: Only after the software checks pass should you investigate reader support, storage space, or computer performance.
- Recheck dates: Because the compatibility list changes frequently, revisit the entry after RPCS3 updates rather than assuming an old result still applies.
What this process does not include
RPCS3 is an emulator and debugger, not a source of PlayStation 3 games. Installing the application does not grant access to commercial titles, and the project’s compatibility label does not remove the need for your own authorized disc and system software. This guide therefore does not provide firmware-download links, game-image links, unverified commands, or a drive-model recommendation. Those details belong in the current official Quickstart, where they can be maintained as tools and supported hardware change.
