Rowan is Rocket Money’s AI financial assistant for Premium+ members. It is delivered through text messaging or RCS rather than as a separate app. To use it, create or sign in to Rocket Money, activate the Premium+ Rowan experience in the Rocket Money app, and connect accounts from Settings → Linked Accounts. Enter bank credentials only in the secure bank, Plaid, or Akoya window that opens during that flow—not in a Rowan message or a Rocket Money form.
Rocket Money says it never sees or stores your bank password. Connected data is protected with TLS while moving between services and 256-bit AES encryption at rest, while Rowan must receive your direction and authorization before taking an action. You should still check every confirmation, because Rocket Money warns that AI can make mistakes.

What Rowan is and what you need before setup
Rowan is an AI-powered assistant included with Rocket Money Premium+. It communicates by text message or RCS, so there is no separate Rowan application to download, install, or update. Rocket Money’s app is used to create the account, choose Premium+, connect financial institutions, and manage permissions; Rowan’s conversations arrive through your phone’s messaging service.

Have these items ready:
- A Rocket Money account, either new or existing.
- An active Premium+ subscription for the Rowan experience.
- Access to the phone number used for Rocket Money text messages or RCS.
- Your bank or card institution’s normal sign-in and any multi-factor authentication (MFA) method it requires.
- A current Rocket Money app installation, with permission to receive its notifications and messages where your device requires it.
Rocket Money’s current product page describes more than 5 million accounts; that figure is presented on the 2026 page and is not a guarantee that every bank, card, or account type is supported. Connector availability is determined by the institution and the connection provider used in the setup flow.
Set up Rowan in Rocket Money
1. Create or sign in to Rocket Money
- Open the Rocket Money app and create an account, or sign in to an existing one.
- Choose the Premium+ experience that includes Rowan. Rowan is activated through Rocket Money; searching an app store for a separate Rowan app will not complete setup.
- Confirm that the phone number associated with the account can receive text messages or RCS. Rowan uses that channel for questions, insights, alerts, and confirmation requests.
If you already have Premium+, look for the Rowan experience inside your Rocket Money account rather than trying to start a new Rowan login. The app remains the place where you manage linked institutions and account access.
2. Open the linked-account connection flow
- In Rocket Money, open Settings using the gear icon.
- Select Linked Accounts.
- Choose your bank or card institution from the list and continue.
- Complete the secure connection flow presented by the institution or its connection provider.
The exact screens can vary by institution. A legitimate flow may move between Rocket Money and a bank, Plaid, or Akoya interface. The important distinction is where credentials are entered: type them only in the secure sign-in screen presented by that connection flow.
3. Finish the institution’s security checks
Your bank may request a one-time code, security question, device approval, or an acceptance of updated terms. Complete those checks in the institution’s connection window. Rocket Money says it does not see or store the credentials you enter there; the connection uses secure tokens to retrieve the account information that you authorize.
4. Wait for the account to appear
After authorization, return to Settings → Linked Accounts and verify that the intended institution and account type are listed. Rowan can only use information that Rocket Money has received from linked accounts, so a transaction or balance will not be available to Rowan until the connection has completed and data has synchronized.

5. Start the Rowan conversation
Once the account is connected, Rowan can text questions, spending insights, recurring-charge alerts, or requests for confirmation. Ask a narrow question first—such as a category total or recurring-charge review—so you can confirm that the expected account data is present before considering an action involving a subscription or bill.
How to link bank and card accounts safely
Use the Rocket Money path, not a message link
Begin every connection at Settings → Linked Accounts in Rocket Money. Do not send a username, password, one-time code, or security answer in an SMS or RCS reply to Rowan. The secure provider screen is the appropriate place for credentials; the conversation is for questions, insights, and approvals.
Check the institution and account type
Before approving access, read the institution name and the account type shown in the connection window. Confirm that it is the bank, card issuer, or brokerage you intended to connect and that the selected account is the one Rowan needs. A similarly named institution or an old account can result in incomplete or misleading spending information.
Keep credentials inside the provider window
Rocket Money’s security messaging says, “We never see your bank password.” In practical terms, that means the password should be entered into the bank, Plaid, or Akoya interface displayed as part of the authorized connection process. Rocket Money receives the permitted account data and connection token rather than your reusable bank password.
Review every requested permission
Read the accounts and permissions listed before you approve. Rowan’s access is limited to information available through Rocket Money and the accounts you connect. If an institution offers several accounts under one login, select only those you intend to include.

Protect the approval step
Rowan requires your direction and authorization before an action is taken, but authorization is still consequential. Read the proposed recipient, amount, subscription, bill, or cancellation detail in each confirmation. Rocket Money specifically recommends double-checking important details because AI may make mistakes.

Unlink accounts when access should end
You can unlink connected accounts to revoke access, or delete your Rocket Money account if you no longer want to use the service. Before unlinking, consider whether you need to export or record budgeting information that depends on the connection. Unlinking prevents future access through that connection; it does not make a previously received bank statement disappear from your bank’s own records.
Add an account that does not appear
When the missing account uses the same login
Some institutions place checking, savings, credit-card, or other sub-accounts under one sign-in. If the account is missing but uses the same credentials:
- Open Settings → Linked Accounts.
- Select the institution already connected.
- Tap Add Account.
- Continue through the provider flow and authorize the specific sub-account for Plaid.
Return to the linked-account list and verify the newly authorized account. If it still does not appear, the institution may not expose that account type through the connection.
When the account uses different credentials
If the missing account has a separate username or password, do not try to force it into the existing connection. Choose Add Institution from the linked-account flow and connect it separately. Enter the second institution’s credentials only in its own secure provider window.

When an account is not eligible
Rowan can use only information that Rocket Money receives from a supported connection. An account may be absent because the institution, account type, or connection method is not available. The app’s linked-account list is the authoritative place to see what can be added; do not give Rowan credentials directly to work around a missing connector.

This division matters when you interpret a message. Rowan can explain or organize data that has reached Rocket Money, but it cannot reveal a transaction that the institution has not yet reported or an account that you did not authorize.

Encryption
Rocket Money describes TLS encryption for data in transit and 256-bit AES encryption for data at rest. TLS helps protect information while it moves between services; AES-256 protects stored data. Encryption does not eliminate the need to secure your phone, email, Rocket Money login, or bank account.
Token-based connections
The connection process is designed so Rocket Money can receive authorized account data without receiving the bank password itself. If you see a credential prompt outside the bank, Plaid, or Akoya interface launched by the Linked Accounts flow, stop and return to the app rather than entering the password.
Human approval for actions
Rowan’s requirement for direction and authorization reduces the chance of an unrequested cancellation, negotiation, or other money-related action. It is not a substitute for reading the confirmation. Verify the account, merchant, amount, timing, and any terms before approving.
AI accuracy
Rocket Money warns that AI may make mistakes. Treat a categorization, budget explanation, or recommendation as an aid to review, not as a financial record that overrides your bank statement. For a high-impact action, compare Rowan’s details with the merchant or institution before authorizing it.
Fix a bank connection that fails
Credentials are rejected
- Manually type the username and password instead of relying on autofill or a password manager. This avoids submitting an outdated username, an extra space, or a saved credential for another institution.
- If the app still rejects the sign-in, try Rocket Money’s website from a computer or tablet.
- Do not send the password to support or to Rowan. Use the secure sign-in page in the connection flow.
The bank says the account is not fully set up
- Open the bank’s own website or app directly and sign in.
- Complete outstanding security questions, MFA enrollment, device approvals, or updated terms.
- Clear any warning, consent, or profile notice that blocks third-party connections.
- Return to Rocket Money and retry Settings → Linked Accounts.
MFA settings must be changed with the financial institution, not in Rocket Money. If the bank requires a new phone number, token, or authentication method, finish that change at the bank first.
An unexpected error appears
- Try a different network, such as cellular data instead of the current Wi-Fi.
- Disable a VPN temporarily, then retry the connection.
- Check the bank directly for an outage or a pending security notice.
- If the error continues, contact Rocket Money through its in-app chat and describe the institution, account type, and exact step where the connection failed. Do not include your password or one-time code.
The account connects but a sub-account is missing
Use Add Account under the already connected institution when the sub-account shares the same login. Use Add Institution when it has different credentials. If neither path lists the account, the account type may not be exposed by the connector.

Fix a balance or transaction that looks stale
Rocket Money says linked accounts normally update about every 24 hours. That is a typical interval, not a promise of real-time data: banks post transactions and balances on different schedules, and pending activity may not be included in the latest update.
Premium users can request a manual refresh:
- Open Settings.
- Select Linked Accounts.
- Open the account menu or choose View.
- Select Sync Account.
A manual sync can prompt a new retrieval, but it may still show an earlier balance if the bank has not reported the transaction. Check the bank’s own app or website when the exact available balance, pending charge, or payment status matters.
Use Rowan without exposing more data than necessary
- Connect only the institutions and accounts needed for your budgeting or recurring-charge goals.
- Review the account list after every connection and remove old, duplicated, or unused links.
- Ask Rowan about one account or spending category at a time when checking that data is mapped correctly.
- Keep your phone’s screen lock, operating-system updates, and Rocket Money login protections enabled.
- Never paste a bank password, full security answer, or one-time MFA code into a Rowan conversation.
- Pause before approving any action that cancels a service, negotiates a bill, changes a payment, or moves money.
- Use your bank’s statement as the final record for posted transactions and balances.
A practical first-use checklist
- Confirm that you are using the official Rocket Money app and the Premium+ Rowan experience.
- Verify the phone number that will receive Rowan’s text or RCS messages.
- Open Settings → Linked Accounts.
- Select the correct institution and account type.
- Enter credentials only in the bank, Plaid, or Akoya interface shown by the connection flow.
- Complete the institution’s MFA and any updated terms.
- Check that the intended account appears in the linked-account list.
- Ask Rowan a read-only spending or transaction question to confirm the data is present.
- Read every confirmation before authorizing an eligible subscription or bill action.
- Record the last-sync timing if you need to reconcile a balance later.
Key limitations to keep in mind
Rowan’s capabilities depend on the accounts and transaction data Rocket Money can access. It cannot use an unlinked account, retrieve information that a bank has not yet reported, or guarantee that an AI-generated explanation is error-free. A connection token also does not mean that every feature is available for every institution; eligibility can vary by account and provider.
For privacy control, unlink an institution when you no longer want Rocket Money to access it, and delete the Rocket Money account if you are leaving the service entirely. For financial decisions with significant consequences, verify Rowan’s details against the institution or merchant before you authorize anything.
