How to Set Up Remote Access to a Home NAS Safely

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest general design is to leave your NAS behind the home router and firewall, then connect the remote phone or computer to a VPN on your router before opening the NAS over its private network address. If configuring a VPN is impractical, a supported relay such as Synology QuickConnect or QNAP myQNAPcloud Link can be easier, but it limits which applications work and may add latency.

Do not make direct NAS port forwarding, automatic UPnP mappings, or a DMZ your default setup. The exact screens and capabilities depend on the NAS operating system, firmware, router model, and the services you need.

What “safe remote access” means for a home NAS

A network-attached storage device is usually safest when it has no directly reachable service on the public internet. Your router performs network address translation (NAT) and firewall filtering, while the NAS uses a private address such as an address in your home LAN. A remote device first proves its identity to a VPN endpoint, receives a path into that private network, and then connects to the NAS as though it were at home.

This arrangement narrows the internet-facing attack surface. It does not make the NAS automatically secure: a compromised account, unpatched firmware, weak VPN credentials, or an overly broad user permission can still expose data. Remote access therefore has two parts: selecting a network path and hardening the accounts and software behind it.

Remote-access methods compared

Method How it works Advantages Trade-offs and cautions
VPN server on the router The remote device creates a VPN tunnel to the home router, then reaches the NAS at its internal address. NAS services remain private; one VPN connection can provide access to several home devices. Router menus, supported protocols, authentication, and throughput vary. The router must receive security updates and have enough processing capacity.
VPN server on the NAS The NAS itself accepts the remote VPN connection and routes the client to the home network or selected services. Useful when the router cannot host a suitable VPN; QNAP documents several VPN options and NAS firewall integration. More involved to configure and maintain. The NAS becomes the VPN endpoint, so its firmware, firewall, and authentication settings require careful maintenance.
Vendor relay A vendor service helps the client reach a supported NAS application without you manually creating router port-forwarding rules. Usually the simplest path for supported apps and remote users who do not want to configure a VPN. Only the vendor’s supported applications work. Relaying can be slower because of additional network latency and depends on the vendor service, network conditions, and region.
Direct port forwarding, UPnP, or DMZ The router publishes one or more NAS services directly, or automatically creates mappings. A direct connection can be fast and may support applications that do not work through a relay. It exposes NAS services to internet scanning and attacks. QNAP warns that direct exposure can lack protection against newly discovered vulnerabilities. This is not the recommended beginner design.

There is no universal winner. Compare setup effort, whether NAS services are directly exposed, application compatibility, latency, supported devices and protocols, and which party maintains the service.

Check these details before changing anything

Feature names and available settings differ by model and software version. Write down the following before you start:

  • NAS manufacturer, model, operating-system edition, and firmware version.
  • Router manufacturer, model, firmware version, and whether it can run a VPN server.
  • The remote devices you will use: Windows or macOS computers, phones, tablets, or another client.
  • The exact services you need: file shares, a vendor mobile app, photo management, backups, media streaming, administration, or something else.
  • The NAS’s internal IP address or a reserved DHCP address. A reservation prevents the address from changing unexpectedly.
  • Which people need access and which folders or applications each person actually needs.

Do not assume that a VPN client on a laptop automatically makes every NAS app work. Some applications use local discovery protocols that do not cross a VPN until routing and name resolution are configured correctly.

Safe setup sequence

  1. Confirm the NAS stays behind the router

Open the router’s firewall, port-forwarding, virtual-server, and DMZ pages. Remove old rules that publish NAS web administration, file-sharing, or application ports unless you have a deliberate, documented reason to retain a particular rule. Also inspect UPnP-created mappings; an application may have opened one without a manual rule. Keep the NAS on the protected LAN rather than placing it in the router’s DMZ.

  2. Choose the first-line access method

Use a router-hosted VPN when the router supports a current, well-documented protocol and you can manage its accounts and updates. If the router cannot host a suitable VPN, check whether the NAS offers a supported VPN server. For a supported vendor application where ease matters more than universal access, evaluate the vendor relay instead.

  3. Configure the router VPN

Follow the current instructions for your exact router firmware; there is no model-independent click path. Create a separate VPN identity for each person or device rather than sharing one profile. Set a strong, unique credential and enable the router’s available authentication and encryption protections. Limit the VPN account to the home network resources it needs when the router supports such restrictions.

Install the matching VPN profile or client on the remote device. While away from home, connect the VPN first. Then open the NAS using its private address or the internal name that your home DNS provides. Do not substitute a public NAS address or a newly created port-forwarding rule if the private address is reachable through the tunnel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Use a NAS-hosted VPN only when necessary

If the router lacks a manageable VPN server, enable the NAS manufacturer’s VPN service according to the current model-specific guide. QNAP describes a NAS-hosted VPN as more involved than its relay option. Keep the NAS firewall enabled, restrict VPN users to the required network ranges where possible, and update the NAS before exposing the VPN service. The VPN endpoint is now running on the storage device, so an unpatched NAS has greater importance to your security plan.

  5. Configure a vendor relay for supported applications

Use the NAS maker’s current relay settings and verify the application list for your exact device and operating-system version. Synology’s QuickConnect documentation says it can establish internet connections without manually configuring port-forwarding rules or router settings. QNAP describes myQNAPcloud Link as a way to access a NAS without directly exposing it.

Relay access is not a general-purpose replacement for a VPN. A supported photo or file application may work while an unsupported third-party service does not. Synology notes that a relayed QuickConnect connection may be slower because of increased network latency; QNAP likewise characterizes its relay path as slower. Neither vendor’s material establishes a universal speed figure.

  6. Harden identities and permissions

Create individual user accounts and grant each person only the shared folders and applications required. Disable the default administrator account when your NAS supports that option, then use a separate named administrative account for administration. Enable the vendor’s available login protections, monitor failed-login alerts, and do not reuse the NAS password elsewhere.

Review shared-folder permissions after creating remote access. A VPN or relay controls the path into the NAS; it does not decide which files a user can read, change, or delete.

  7. Update and test from outside the home

Install current security updates for the NAS and router, taking account of the vendor’s release notes and your model’s support status. Test with a phone’s cellular connection or another genuinely external network, not a second device on the same Wi-Fi. Verify the VPN or relay connection, each required application, file permissions, and the ability to disconnect access when a device is lost.

Setting up a router VPN in practice

A router VPN is usually the cleanest architecture because the router remains the boundary between the public internet and every internal device. The remote sequence is:

  1. The client starts the VPN connection using its individual profile.
  2. The router authenticates the client and creates the encrypted tunnel.
  3. The client receives a route to the home LAN, or to a selected subnet if you configured restricted access.
  4. The client opens the NAS’s private IP address or internal hostname.

Use the router’s current documentation for the exact protocol, client profile format, certificate handling, and account screens. Check that the router continues to receive firmware updates and that its VPN performance is adequate for your expected workload. Large backups and video streams require more bandwidth and processing than occasional document access.

If the VPN connects but the NAS does not respond, first check routing. The client may have authenticated successfully without receiving a route to the NAS subnet. Try the NAS’s private IP address instead of its hostname; if that works, investigate home DNS or name-resolution settings. Confirm that the NAS firewall allows traffic from the VPN address range.

When a NAS-hosted VPN is appropriate

A NAS VPN can be useful when the existing router cannot host a suitable server or when the NAS platform provides controls your router lacks. It also means that the storage device must handle VPN encryption and remain available whenever you need remote access.

Keep administration separate from ordinary file access. Use a dedicated VPN account, restrict its permissions, and avoid granting every VPN user NAS administrator rights. Confirm that the NAS firewall permits the VPN service while blocking unrelated inbound services. Keep a recovery plan: if a firmware update or configuration mistake makes the NAS unreachable, you should still have local console or LAN access to repair it.

Using vendor relay services without overestimating them

Synology QuickConnect

Synology’s DSM 7.4 technical specifications describe QuickConnect as able to connect without manually configuring port-forwarding rules or router settings. The same specification says it uses end-to-end encryption when SSL is enabled. That is a vendor statement about the stated configuration, not a guarantee about every path, application, or remote-access product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the supported application list for your DSM version. A relay may be selected when a direct connection cannot be made, and Synology warns that this path can have higher latency. If the experience is too slow for large transfers, use a properly configured VPN where possible rather than opening NAS ports simply to obtain a direct connection.

QNAP myQNAPcloud Link

QNAP presents myQNAPcloud Link as a way to access a NAS without directly exposing it. Confirm that the QNAP applications and firmware on your model support the service you need. QNAP’s comparison treats the relay as easier to configure than a NAS VPN but slower than a direct path.

Relay availability can depend on the vendor service, regional routing, your internet connection, and service status. Maintain a second, locally tested recovery method for times when the relay is unavailable.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Why direct exposure is a poor default

Port forwarding tells the router to send unsolicited internet traffic to a NAS service. UPnP can create similar mappings automatically, sometimes without a clear review step. A DMZ rule is broader still: it can send most unsolicited traffic to one internal device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

QNAP’s remote-access guidance recommends keeping the NAS behind NAT and a firewall and advises users who are not proficient at maintaining network security to avoid port forwarding, UPnP, and DMZ. Its security comparison also warns that directly exposed NAS services are vulnerable to attacks and may not have defenses against zero-day vulnerabilities. A direct path can be faster, but speed does not offset an exposure you cannot monitor and patch confidently.

  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

If a particular service truly requires public exposure, document the exact port, service owner, authentication method, update schedule, logging, backups, and rollback plan. Treat that as an advanced exception, not as the starting recipe for home remote access.

Account, device, and data protections

  • Use unique identities: one account per person or device makes it possible to revoke access without disrupting everyone else.
  • Remove default administration: disable the default administrator account when supported and use a separate named account for privileged work.
  • Apply least privilege: grant only required folders, applications, and administrative functions.
  • Patch both endpoints: keep router and NAS firmware current, and update remote client devices.
  • Protect recovery: maintain backups that are not writable by the same account used for everyday remote access. Test restoring a file.
  • Review exposure after changes: router features can create mappings automatically. Recheck forwarding, UPnP, and DMZ pages after enabling a new service.
  • Limit public services: if a public port is unavoidable, open only the specific port required and monitor its logs. Do not imply that one firewall rule makes an exposed NAS safe.

Synology’s security guidance for DSM 7 and legacy versions, identified as updated May 27, 2026, emphasizes disabling the default administrator and managing user and shared-folder privileges. QNAP’s best-practices article applies to its NAS series and was last modified December 16, 2022; because menu names and firmware behavior change, verify current instructions for your model.

Testing and troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The VPN says connected, but the NAS is unreachable. No route to the NAS subnet, an incorrect private address, or a NAS firewall rule. Try the NAS’s internal IP, inspect the VPN route table, and allow the VPN address range in the NAS firewall.
The NAS works by IP address but not by name. Remote DNS is not resolving the home hostname. Use the internal IP temporarily, then configure the router or VPN client to use the appropriate home DNS settings.
A relay application is missing or cannot connect. The app or firmware is not supported, or the vendor service is unavailable. Check the current supported-app list and service status. Use the VPN path for applications that require general LAN access.
Relay transfers are very slow. The connection is using a relay with additional latency or limited upstream bandwidth. Test the VPN path, check both home upload speed and remote download speed, and avoid opening NAS ports solely to chase performance.
A port appears open even after removing your manual rule. UPnP or another router feature recreated a mapping. Inspect the router’s UPnP and automatic-forwarding tables, disable unnecessary UPnP, and identify the application creating the rule.
Remote access works at home but fails externally. The test device is still using the local network, or the VPN/relay is not actually completing an external connection. Disable Wi-Fi and test over cellular data or another independent connection. Confirm the client’s connection status and logs.
A user can see more data than intended. Shared-folder or application permissions are too broad. Review that user’s group membership and explicit permissions; test with a non-administrator account.

Should you buy a VPN-capable router?

Many households can use their existing router. Consider replacement only when the current device cannot host a suitable VPN, no longer receives security updates, or lacks the performance needed for your workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying, verify:

  • Which VPN server protocols and client platforms it supports.
  • How the manufacturer delivers security updates and for how long.
  • Whether it supports individual VPN accounts and useful access restrictions.
  • Expected encrypted-throughput performance for backups or media.
  • Whether it can reserve the NAS’s internal IP address and provide reliable local DNS.

Do not buy on the label alone. A router with VPN server support still needs correct configuration, strong credentials, timely updates, and a NAS with properly limited permissions.

Choosing the right path for your situation

Choose a router VPN when

  • You need access to several home devices or NAS services.
  • Your router supports a current VPN server and receives security updates.
  • You are comfortable installing client profiles and testing routes.

Choose a NAS VPN when

  • The router cannot provide a suitable VPN.
  • Your NAS model documents a supported VPN server and firewall configuration.
  • You can maintain NAS updates, authentication, and recovery access.

Choose a vendor relay when

  • You primarily use applications on the vendor’s supported list.
  • You want to avoid manual port forwarding and router configuration.
  • You accept possible relay latency and dependence on the vendor service.

Do not choose direct exposure as a shortcut when

  • You cannot explain every public port and its maintenance owner.
  • You rely on UPnP or DMZ because the intended service is difficult to configure.
  • You do not have tested backups and a recovery plan.

For most homes, the practical order is: keep the NAS private, use a router VPN if supported, use a NAS VPN when the router cannot, and use a vendor relay for supported apps when simplicity is the priority. Revisit the choice whenever the NAS firmware, router, applications, or household users change.
