What RCON does on a Project Zomboid server
RCON (remote console) lets an administrator manage a running server without being logged into the game. You can inspect players, broadcast messages, save the world, change access levels, moderate users, and shut the server down safely from a remote client. BisectHosting describes it as managing a server without an active in-game presence (provider documentation updated August 31, 2026).

Project Zomboid’s dedicated server implements the standard Valve Source RCON protocol over TCP, so a compatible Source RCON client can connect (MantaScope technical guide, 2026). The game’s normal player traffic remains separate and uses UDP. A successful RCON connection therefore proves only that the administrative endpoint is reachable; it does not prove that players can join the game.
Before you change anything
Have the server stopped, the name of the active save, administrator access to the machine or hosting panel, and a safe place to store the new secret. If the server is already populated, tell players about the short restart window. Keep a current backup of the save and its INI before editing. RCON changes are small, but editing the wrong save or losing the original configuration can create avoidable downtime.

Decide whether administrators will connect from the same machine, from a private network, or over the public internet. A local-only setup may need no router rule, while internet administration normally requires a public endpoint, a forwarded port, and a host or provider firewall rule. The exact firewall screens differ by operating system and hosting company, so use the narrowest rule your environment supports rather than copying a rule intended for another platform.
Ports and passwords: keep the boundaries clear
| Purpose | Protocol | Typical value or setting | Where it is configured |
|---|---|---|---|
| Player game traffic | UDP | 16261 and 16262 | Server networking and hosting/firewall rules |
| Steam networking path | UDP | 8766 may be required, depending on the path documented for your build | Server networking and hosting/firewall rules |
| Remote console (RCON) | TCP | Your RCONPort, for example 27015 |
Server save INI |
| Player join credential | Not a network port | Password |
Server save INI; entered by players |
| RCON credential | Not a network port | RCONPassword |
Server save INI; entered by administrators |
Do not put the player join Password into an RCON client. The client needs the exact non-empty RCONPassword. RCON listens on the TCP port you assign; entering UDP 16261 or 16262 in an RCON client will normally produce a timeout or refusal.
The number 27015 is only an example, not a Project Zomboid requirement. Any unused TCP port accepted by your host can work. What matters is consistency: the INI value, the panel allocation, the firewall rule, the router forward, and the client entry must all refer to the same port.
Choose a hosting approach
| Concern | Managed hosting panel | Self-hosted machine |
|---|---|---|
| Port allocation | The panel normally lets you create or select an unused allocation and label it for RCON. | You choose an unused TCP port and ensure no other service or server instance uses it. |
| Configuration access | Edit the save INI through the panel’s file manager or editor. The provider workflow uses /home/container/.cache/Server/[SaveName].ini. |
On Windows, the community workflow places servertest.ini in C:Users<you>ZomboidServer after the first boot. Other operating systems use their own Zomboid user-data location. |
| Firewall and router | The host usually handles the public allocation; confirm that the allocation is actually enabled. | You must allow the chosen TCP port in the host firewall and forward it on the router when connecting from the internet. |
| Backups and restarts | Panels commonly provide scheduled restart and backup controls, but verify what your plan actually includes. | You are responsible for backups, controlled restarts, service supervision, and recovery. |
| Public-IP exposure | The provider exposes the allocated endpoint; restrict access with any controls the panel offers. | Expose only the required TCP port and limit source addresses where practical. |
| Cost and browser console | Pricing and console features vary by provider and were not established in the cited technical material. | There is no hosting-panel fee, but hardware, bandwidth, maintenance, and your own time are your costs; use a local or web RCON client as desired. |
A managed service such as BisectHosting or Akliz can be convenient when you want port allocation, an editor, backups, and a browser console in one dashboard. Confirm current plan features, allocation limits, pricing, and any partner or affiliate terms directly with the provider; those details change and are not part of the RCON protocol. Self-hosting avoids a hosting-panel subscription but shifts every operational task to you, including keeping the machine online, patching it, monitoring storage, and recovering after a power or network failure.
Set up RCON step by step
1. Stop the server
Stop the Project Zomboid server before editing its network settings. The provider procedure starts this way because a running process can overwrite the file or continue listening with the old values. Wait until the panel reports the process stopped or the console has returned to a shell prompt. Do not edit a file while a restart or automatic update is still in progress.
2. Locate the save INI
Find the INI belonging to the save you actually run. In a managed panel, the documented example is /home/container/.cache/Server/[SaveName].ini. On a Windows dedicated installation, boot the server once if necessary, then open C:Users<you>ZomboidServerservertest.ini (replace servertest when your save has another name). Editing a different save’s INI will not change the endpoint used by your server.
Use the save name shown in the launch command or panel, not merely the name of a backup folder. If several INI files exist, check which one has the other settings you recognize, such as the server name and player password. Make a copy before changing it so you can compare the final file or restore the previous state.
3. Allocate an unused TCP port
Choose a free TCP port for RCON. The examples use 27015, but the number is not universal. A hosting panel may require you to allocate the port before it can be entered in the INI. If you run multiple Project Zomboid instances, assign each instance its own RCON port; two processes cannot reliably listen on the same address and port.
Record the mapping in a small operations note, for example “main save — TCP 27015.” This prevents an administrator from testing a different instance by mistake. If a port is already used by another service, the server may fail to bind it or RCON may appear unreachable even though the INI looks correct.

4. Set both RCON keys
Add the keys to the server INI, or change their existing values:
Recommended Free Tools
RCONPort=27015
RCONPassword=replace-with-a-long-random-secret
RCONPassword must contain a value. An empty value disables RCON even if RCONPort is present. Use a long, unique random secret rather than a word reused for the player join password or another service. Keep the normal INI format: one key per line, no surrounding quotation marks unless the file’s syntax specifically requires them.
Do not add a slash, spaces before the key name, or a second competing copy of the same key elsewhere in the file. If the file already has RCONPort or RCONPassword, change that line instead of creating ambiguity. Preserve the file’s text encoding and line endings when using an editor or panel file manager.
5. Save, then restart
Save the INI and start the server again. A restart is required for the process to bind the TCP endpoint with the new settings. If your panel has separate “save” and “restart” controls, perform both; changing the file while the server is running is not enough. Watch the startup console for errors, and wait until the server has finished loading before testing.
6. Allow the endpoint through your network
For a self-hosted server, allow the selected TCP port through the operating-system firewall. If administrators connect from outside your home or office network, forward that TCP port on the router to the server’s private address. Open only the port you selected and only as broadly as necessary. Managed hosts generally handle the external allocation, but you still need to confirm that the allocation is attached to the instance and that any panel firewall or security-group rule permits it.

Use the server’s public IP or provider hostname from outside the network, and its private address only for a local test. A local connection can succeed while internet access fails because the router is not forwarding the port; the reverse can also be affected by firewall policy. If your provider offers an access-control list, restrict RCON to administrator addresses or a VPN range instead of exposing it to every internet address.
7. Connect with an RCON client
In your RCON client, enter:
- Address: the server’s reachable IP address or hostname.
- Port: the numeric
RCONPortvalue, using TCP. - Password: the exact
RCONPassword.
Standard Source RCON clients work with Project Zomboid. rcon-cli is one command-line option; a provider’s browser console may also act as the client. Enter the values manually once rather than copying a line that might include hidden spaces or the player join password. After connecting, send help. The provider procedure uses help to display the available commands, making it a simple end-to-end test.
When a client offers separate fields for host, port, and password, do not append the port to the password or enter a game query port in the RCON field. Some clients remember credentials in a profile; protect that profile and clear it when an administrator no longer has access.
Use the correct command syntax
In-game admin chat commonly prefixes commands with a slash, for example /servermsg "text". RCON and the server console expect the command without that slash: servermsg "text". Supplying the slash can make a valid command appear unknown.

Some commands need game state that a headless console cannot provide. The command reference identifies alarm as requiring a valid in-world position. If help, players, and servermsg work but alarm does nothing, the RCON connection may be healthy; the individual command’s positional requirement is the issue.
Secure the RCON channel
- Generate a long, unique
RCONPassword; never reuse the player join password. - Do not publish the secret in screenshots, Discord messages, shell history, repository files, or panel logs.
- Restrict firewall and router exposure to the selected TCP port. If your environment supports source-address restrictions or a VPN, use them for administrative access.
- Store the secret in an access-controlled password manager or deployment secret, not in scripts committed to source control.
- Rotate the password after sharing it with a former administrator or whenever you suspect it was exposed. Restart the server after changing it.
- Keep backups of the save and INI before major administrative changes. A backup does not replace a controlled
savebefore shutdown, but it gives you a recovery point.
RCON grants administrative control, so treat the credential like a server key. Do not paste it into support tickets or public issue trackers. If a client stores connection profiles in a shared browser or workstation, remove the profile when access is revoked. A password rotation is not complete until every authorized client has been updated and old copies have been deleted.
Troubleshoot by symptom
Connection refused or timeout
- Confirm the Project Zomboid server is running and that you edited the INI for the active save.
- Check that the client uses the TCP RCON port, not UDP 16261 or 16262.
- Verify that the port is allocated in the hosting panel, or that the self-hosted firewall and router forward the chosen port.
- Check for a port collision with another server instance or service.
- From the same machine, test the local address first; then test the public address from an external network to distinguish local firewall problems from router or provider exposure.
If the server log shows it started but no client can connect, compare the configured port with the port shown in the panel allocation. If only external tests fail, investigate the router, provider security group, or public address rather than changing the password. If local tests fail too, check the process state, INI selection, and port collision first.
Authentication failure
Open the active INI and compare the client entry character for character with RCONPassword. Ensure the value is not empty and that you did not paste the player join Password. After correcting it, save the file and restart; the running process will not adopt a changed password until it reloads its configuration.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Commands are reported as unknown
Send help first, remove the leading /, and check quotation marks around player names or messages containing spaces. A command copied from in-game chat needs its slash removed for RCON. If help itself fails, solve connection or authentication before investigating individual command syntax.
Only one command fails
Compare the failing command with the server state it requires. A command that targets a player needs that player online and correctly quoted. alarm additionally needs a valid in-world position, so it is not a suitable standalone connectivity test.
RCON works but players cannot join
Treat the two services independently. RCON success confirms the TCP administrative endpoint, not the public game path. Check UDP 16261, UDP 16262, and UDP 8766 when the documented Steam networking path requires it, along with the player join Password, router forwarding, and firewall rules. Ask a player to test from outside the server’s network; a local join can hide a public forwarding problem.
Everything broke after an update
Confirm that the server and clients are on the same current branch and build, then recheck the active INI, allocated port, and firewall behavior. Port defaults, panel screens, command availability, and capacity guidance can change between builds. The Project Zomboid Wiki reports handling up to 254 players for Build 42.20.3, but that is a community-wiki figure rather than an official performance guarantee; verify the live build before using it for planning. Do not assume an old tutorial’s screenshots or default ports still match your branch.

For more advanced operations, a self-hosted control panel can combine RCON, scheduled restarts, backups, and player management. Verify the panel’s licensing, supported Project Zomboid branch, and security model before adopting it. A panel is an operational convenience, not a replacement for the INI values or network rules described above.
Frequently asked questions
Is RCON the same as the server port?
No. Player connections use the game’s UDP ports, commonly 16261 and 16262, with UDP 8766 potentially involved in the documented Steam networking path. RCON uses a separate TCP port set by RCONPort.
What should I enter for RCONPort?
Enter an unused TCP port allocated by your host or selected on your self-hosted machine. 27015 is a workable example, not a universal default. Use the same number in the INI, firewall or router rule, and RCON client.
Why does RCONPassword have to be non-empty?
An empty RCONPassword disables RCON. Set a long, unique value, restart the server, and enter that exact value in the client.
Can I use the player join password?
No. The client must use RCONPassword. The player join Password is a separate credential and should not be reused.
Which RCON client works?
Project Zomboid uses the standard Valve Source RCON protocol over TCP, so any compatible Source RCON client can work. A command-line tool such as rcon-cli or a provider’s browser console are common choices.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do RCON commands begin with a slash?
No. Send servermsg "text", not /servermsg "text". The slash is used in in-game admin chat, not in the remote console.
Why does help work but alarm fail?
help tests the connection and command parser. The documented alarm command requires a valid in-world position, which a headless RCON session may not provide.
Does working RCON mean players can connect?
No. RCON confirms only that the TCP administrative endpoint is reachable. Player access still depends on the game’s UDP ports, router and firewall rules, branch compatibility, and the player join password.

What does RCON cost?
The protocol and client are separate from hosting fees. Managed-host pricing, port limits, backups, and browser-console features vary by provider. Self-hosting avoids a panel subscription but still incurs hardware, bandwidth, maintenance, and administrative time.

RCON setup is a small INI change with three non-negotiable details: a non-empty RCONPassword, an unused TCP RCONPort, and a restart. Connect with those values through a Source RCON client, test with help, and remember that administrative TCP access, player UDP access, and the player join password are separate systems.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is RCON the same as the Project Zomboid server port?
No. RCON uses its own TCP port; player traffic uses separate UDP ports such as 16261 and 16262.
What do I enter for RCONPort?
Use an unused TCP port, such as 27015, allocated by your host or selected on your own machine. Match it in the INI, firewall or router rule, and client.
Why can’t my RCON client authenticate?
Check the exact non-empty RCONPassword in the active save INI. It is different from the player join Password, and changes require a server restart.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo RCON commands need a slash?
No. Send servermsg “text”, not /servermsg “text”. The slash is for in-game admin chat.
Does a successful RCON connection prove players can join?
No. Verify the game’s UDP ports, Steam networking path, firewall and router rules, branch/build, and player join password separately.
Why does one command fail while help works?
Some commands require a player to be online or a valid in-world position. The documented alarm command is one example.
The Bottom Line
Set a non-empty RCONPassword and an unused TCP RCONPort in the active save INI, restart, and test with help. Keep RCON credentials, game ports, and the player join password separate.
