How to Set Up QoS on a Router to Prioritize Video Calls and Gaming

To prioritize video calls and gaming, open your router’s app or administrator page, enable its QoS or traffic-priority feature, then select the call or gaming activity—or the devices that use them. If the router offers SQM (Smart Queue Management), use it when full-link congestion and bufferbloat are causing lag. Enter realistic upload and download capacities, save the configuration, and test again while another device is transferring data. QoS can make existing bandwidth behave better under competition; it cannot increase the speed supplied by your internet plan.

What QoS changes—and what it cannot change

Quality of Service (QoS) is a set of router rules for deciding how packets are treated when several devices compete for limited upload or download capacity. A router may give a game, a work call, or a selected device earlier access to the queue while less time-sensitive traffic waits.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That policy matters only when a link is contested. If your connection is idle, prioritizing one application does not make it inherently faster. Likewise, QoS cannot repair an outage, increase the plan’s maximum bandwidth, or overcome severe Wi-Fi interference. ASUS describes its controls this way: they help use existing bandwidth more efficiently rather than increasing total bandwidth.

Two symptoms are often confused:

  • Congestion and bufferbloat: upload or download queues fill during a transfer, adding latency to calls and games. Queue-management features can address this.
  • Wireless or upstream problems: a weak signal, interference, a saturated neighborhood link, or congestion beyond your router may not improve when you change local QoS rules.

Classic QoS generally gives chosen traffic precedence. SQM goes further by shaping traffic and actively managing queues so they do not grow as large. A router can expose classic QoS, SQM, both, or neither.

Check your router before changing settings

Interfaces and capabilities are model- and firmware-specific. Identify the exact model and hardware revision, then consult its current manual or support documentation. Search the interface for any of these labels:

  • QoS or Quality of Service
  • Traffic priority, traffic control, or bandwidth control
  • Device priority
  • Application or service priority
  • Adaptive QoS or Adaptive QoE
  • SQM, Smart Queue Management, queue management, or bufferbloat control

Some mesh products expose priorities only in a companion app. Others provide a full web interface but hide advanced controls until an operating mode is selected. A firmware update can move a menu or change which options are available, so do not assume a path from another model applies to yours.

Before enabling anything, record:

  • The router model, firmware version, and current operating mode.
  • Your internet plan’s advertised upload and download rates.
  • Which device will run the call and which will run the game.
  • Whether the router is the network gateway, or is operating behind another router, in access-point, bridge, repeater, VPN, or server mode.

Where the controls are found

Use the product’s documented path as a model, not as a universal menu:

Router ecosystem or interface Typical place to look Controls you may see
ASUS routers with Adaptive QoE Adaptive QoE or Adaptive QoS section in the administrator interface A QoS switch, activity presets such as Gaming and work-from-home/video conferencing, device selection, and in some models a balancing mode
TP-Link routers QoS or priority page in the router’s web interface Activity selection, priority devices, and bandwidth fields on supported models
TP-Link Deco systems QoS or priority controls in the Deco companion app Activity-based selection and device priority on supported products
NETGEAR Nighthawk routers QoS or traffic-priority area in the Nighthawk web interface Device or application prioritization, depending on model and firmware
OpenWrt-based routers Network or SQM-related administration pages, often after installing or enabling the relevant package Shaping rates, queue-management algorithms, and interface selection

The exact labels, available presets, and whether an app or browser is required vary by model. If no option appears, verify the hardware revision, firmware, and operating mode before concluding that the router lacks QoS.

Step-by-step: enable QoS and prioritize calls or games

  1. Connect to the router. Join its local network, open the administrator page or companion app, and sign in with an administrator account. Use the router’s documented address or app rather than a guessed address.
  2. Open the traffic-priority page. Look under Advanced, Network, Internet, or a similarly named section for QoS, traffic priority, Adaptive QoS/Adaptive QoE, or SQM.
  3. Turn the feature on. Enable the main QoS switch, then apply the change if the interface requires a separate confirmation. Some systems restart networking briefly.
  4. Choose the control type your model provides. Select an activity preset, choose one or more devices, or define an application/service rule. Do not look for an application selector if the product supports only device priority.
  5. Select the call and gaming activity. Use the work-from-home, video-conferencing, gaming, or equivalent categories when available. If the interface allows multiple activities, select both rather than assuming a gaming preset also covers calls.
  6. Assign the correct devices. Pick the computer, console, phone, or tablet that actually carries the call or game. A priority rule for the wrong device has no effect on the traffic you care about.
  7. Enter capacity or shaping values if requested. Use current, realistic upload and download capacity for this connection. A limiter generally must be set below the maximum supplied by the ISP before it can control the queue; ASUS explicitly documents this requirement for its bandwidth-limiter feature.
  8. Save or apply. Wait for the router to confirm the new policy. If it offers a reboot or network refresh, allow connected devices to reconnect.
  9. Test under competition. Start a call or game, then have another device upload and download a large file or perform another sustained transfer. Compare responsiveness with QoS enabled and disabled under similar conditions.
  10. Adjust one variable at a time. If the result is worse, remove an overly broad rule, lower the shaping rate slightly, select the correct device, or disable the feature and restore the previous configuration.

Choosing activity, application, or device priority

Activity presets

A preset is the quickest option when the router recognizes categories such as gaming or work-from-home/video conferencing. It may contain vendor-maintained application signatures and default priorities, but the category list and recognition accuracy are model-dependent. Treat the preset as a starting point and verify it under load.

Device priority

Device priority is useful when the router cannot identify a particular application or when several services on one machine need consistent treatment. Prioritizing a whole laptop, console, or phone also prioritizes its background traffic, so avoid marking every household device as high priority.

Application or service rules

Some interfaces let you choose an application, service, port, or protocol. This can be more selective than device priority, but encrypted and changing application traffic may not match a static rule on every model. Follow the router’s documented format and do not invent port numbers from an unrelated product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When calls and gaming happen together

If the router provides a balancing mode, use it when both activities must remain responsive. ASUS recommends its AI Balance option for simultaneous gaming and video calls on supported Adaptive QoE products. On routers without a balancing mode, select both activities if possible, or give deliberate priority to both relevant devices and then test whether one starves the other.

What upload and download speeds should you enter?

There is no universal number or percentage that works for every connection. Enter the capacity that the router can actually shape, not a marketing figure copied from the plan, and carry the qualification for each direction separately.

  • Measure current capacity: test the connection when the network is otherwise quiet. A wired computer connected to the gateway gives a cleaner baseline than a distant Wi-Fi client.
  • Use realistic values: account for the lower direction if your service varies by time, technology, or congestion. The relevant bottleneck may be upload even when download is much faster.
  • Stay below the service maximum when using a limiter: if the configured value is at or above the ISP-provided maximum, the limiter may never take control. ASUS specifically directs users to set bandwidth-limiter values below the ISP maximum.
  • Change gradually: save a conservative value, test during a sustained transfer, and adjust if latency remains high or throughput falls too far.

A rate that is too high allows the upstream modem, ISP equipment, or another device to build the queue outside the router. A rate that is too low needlessly reduces available throughput. Because line rates and router implementations differ, the correct value is the one that controls the local bottleneck without wasting substantial capacity.

QoS versus SQM: which control should you use?

Aspect Classic QoS or priority SQM
Primary job Give selected devices, activities, or applications precedence when traffic competes. Shape traffic and actively manage queues to limit latency under load.
Best fit A router with clear activity or device controls, especially when you need one service to win contention. A connection showing bufferbloat during heavy uploads or downloads.
What it requires Correct device or activity selection; some models also request capacity values. Accurate shaping rates, a supported interface, and enough router CPU to process traffic at the required speed.
Potential downside An incorrect or overly broad rule can favor background traffic or leave the real bottleneck untouched. Peak throughput can fall, particularly on slower hardware; CPU limits may prevent full line-rate shaping.
Can both be enabled? Depends on the platform. Do not assume stacking is supported. GL.iNet documents platforms where QoS and SQM cannot be enabled simultaneously.

OpenWrt describes SQM as a combination of traffic shaping, active queue management, and scheduling. That design targets the queues that create bufferbloat, but the shaping work runs on the router. OpenWrt calls out CPU capacity as a limiting factor, and GL.iNet warns that SQM can reduce peak throughput and has hardware, mode, and feature-compatibility constraints.

How to test whether QoS actually helped

Do not judge the setting from an idle speed test. QoS is intended for contention, so reproduce the condition that causes the problem.

  1. Record baseline behavior with QoS or SQM disabled: call quality, in-game responsiveness, and download/upload throughput.
  2. Start a sustained upload, download, or both on a second device. Keep the transfer running long enough for the connection to reach its normal load.
  3. Place a call and perform the game activity from the selected device. Note freezes, robotic audio, delayed controls, or sudden latency spikes.
  4. Enable the chosen rule and repeat the same scenario at a similar load.
  5. Check both responsiveness and useful throughput. A setting that lowers latency but removes a large amount of capacity may need a different shaping value or may exceed the router’s practical CPU limit.
  6. Repeat once at another time if your service rate changes. A rule that works on a quiet afternoon may not control a different evening bottleneck.

There is no universal latency threshold or benchmark established for every router and connection. The meaningful comparison is your own before-and-after result under the same competing traffic.

Troubleshooting: when priority does not work

The QoS or SQM menu is missing

  • Confirm the exact model and hardware revision, not just the product family.
  • Install the manufacturer’s current firmware, then recheck the documented menu path.
  • Verify whether the feature is available only in router/gateway mode and not in access-point, bridge, repeater, VPN, server, or drop-in configurations.
  • Check the companion app if you are using a mesh system; some products do not expose priority controls in the browser interface.

Prioritization has no visible effect

  • Make sure another device is actually saturating the link during the test.
  • Confirm that the selected device is the one carrying the call or game, and that the activity rule matches what the router supports.
  • Check whether congestion is beyond your router. ISP-side congestion, a slow modem link, or an upstream service problem will not necessarily respond to local QoS.
  • Test the Wi-Fi signal separately. Interference, poor channel conditions, and distance can cause loss or retransmissions even when the internet queue is controlled.

The bandwidth limiter appears to do nothing

Verify that the configured upload and download values are below the service maximum and reflect the current connection. A value at or above the available rate may never become the active bottleneck. Recheck the direction: an upload problem requires an upload rule, not only a download value.

SQM lowers speed too much

Reduce the shaping burden or disable SQM temporarily and compare results. OpenWrt identifies router CPU limits as a constraint, while GL.iNet warns that SQM can reduce peak throughput. If the hardware cannot shape at your line rate, a slower controlled connection may not be worthwhile; a more capable gateway may be required.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6) | MU-MIMO Wireless Internet Router, 4 x Antennas, OneMesh and AP Mode, Long Range Coverage
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

The call improves but the game worsens, or vice versa

Remove broad device rules and use the narrowest supported combination of activity and device priorities. If both activities must coexist, use a balancing mode where available, or prioritize both deliberately and retest while each is active. Avoid marking every device as high priority, because that removes the distinction the scheduler needs.

Operating-mode and topology limits

Router QoS controls generally govern traffic that passes through the router while it is acting as the relevant gateway. If another device is the actual gateway, the local router may not see or control the congested queue. GL.iNet documents SQM behavior that is limited to specified operating modes and unavailable in some VPN, server, or drop-in arrangements.

For a typical home network, place the QoS/SQM function on the device directly connected to the modem or broadband terminal. If you have two routers, determine which one performs routing and address translation before configuring priority. Enabling controls on the downstream access point may not affect traffic already queued upstream.

When a different router is justified

Consider replacing or repositioning the router only after confirming that the existing device lacks the needed control or cannot process it at your connection’s speed. Compare the following capabilities rather than relying on a generic “gaming router” label:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Activity or application priority, device priority, or both.
  • SQM support and the shaping throughput the hardware can sustain.
  • Processor capacity under QoS or SQM load.
  • Support in the exact firmware and operating mode you will use.
  • Whether the controls are available in the web interface, companion app, or both.

No router setting guarantees lower latency in every household. A replacement helps only when the current gateway is the bottleneck or lacks a usable way to manage the competing traffic.

A practical configuration checklist

  • Identify the exact model, firmware, and gateway operating mode.
  • Locate QoS, traffic priority, Adaptive QoS/Adaptive QoE, or SQM in the documented interface.
  • Enable one control system and note whether the platform forbids using QoS and SQM together.
  • Select the video-conferencing and gaming activities, or the specific devices that run them.
  • Enter measured, realistic upload and download capacities below the ISP maximum when a limiter requires it.
  • Apply the change and test while another device is actively transferring data.
  • Keep the setting only if responsiveness improves without an unacceptable throughput loss.
  • Recheck the menu and supported features after firmware updates.
