In the documented Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War PC setup, open Settings > Audio, enable Voice Chat, choose Game Chat or Party Chat, then set Microphone Activation Mode to Push to Talk. Assign a key under Push to Talk (Voice Chat); V is the default in the official PC guide, and you hold it while speaking. You can separately adjust voice-chat volume, open-microphone sensitivity and microphone volume.
Those labels are not a universal path for every Call of Duty release. The instructions below identify exactly which title and platform they apply to, then explain the documented Warzone Mobile differences so you do not apply PC directions to a mobile or newer game menu.

First identify your Call of Duty title and platform
Call of Duty menus change between releases, editions and input platforms. The most complete documented path available for this subject is for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War on PC with a keyboard and mouse. A separate official guide covers Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, where voice options are located in the Social menu. The sources do not establish one current settings path for every later PC, PlayStation, Xbox or mobile release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Version and platform | What is documented | How to use this guide |
|---|---|---|
| Black Ops Cold War, PC keyboard and mouse | Settings > Audio, voice-chat channel choices, activation modes and the default V key. |
Follow the numbered setup steps below. |
| Warzone Mobile | Voice controls in the Social menu, including party-only game voice, channel mute behavior, push-to-talk at match start and proximity-chat controls. | Use the mobile section; do not use the PC keybinding steps. |
| Other Call of Duty releases or console versions | The reviewed official material does not verify the exact menu labels or control locations. | Open the current game’s own Audio, Voice, Social or Controller/Keyboard settings and read the in-game descriptions before changing a setting. |
If a label in the steps is missing, that is usually a version mismatch rather than proof that your microphone is defective. Confirm the game name, platform and input method first.

Set up push-to-talk in Black Ops Cold War on PC
The following procedure applies to the documented PC version of Black Ops Cold War. It uses the game’s keyboard-and-mouse controls.
- Open the audio menu. Start the game, open Settings, and select Audio.
- Turn on voice chat. Set Voice Chat to enabled. If this remains disabled, changing the activation key will not make your voice available through the game’s chat system.
- Select the audience for your voice. Under Voice & Text Chat Channel, choose Game Chat or Party Chat. Game Chat is the documented channel choice for communicating through the game channel; Party Chat limits communication to the party channel. Choose the channel that matches the people you intend to reach.
- Choose the activation mode. Find Microphone Activation Mode and select Push to Talk. In this mode, the microphone transmits only while you hold the assigned key.
- Confirm or change the push-to-talk key. Set Push to Talk (Voice Chat) to a key that you can hold without interfering with movement or other essential controls. The official PC guide lists
Vas the default. Hold that key while speaking, then release it to stop transmitting. - Adjust the three audio controls. Set Voice Chat Volume, Open Microphone Sensitivity and Microphone Volume independently. They affect different parts of the voice path, so changing one does not replace the others.
- Check the keybind menu if necessary. The PC guide says keyboard bindings can be edited in Keyboard and Mouse settings. If
Vdoes nothing, inspect the configured Push to Talk (Voice Chat) binding there rather than assuming the default is still active.
What the channel setting changes
Game Chat and Party Chat are separate documented choices under Voice & Text Chat Channel. A channel mismatch can look like a microphone failure: you may be transmitting correctly while the intended listeners are in the other channel. Select the channel used by the group you are trying to contact, and change it when you move between a party conversation and broader in-game communication.
What each volume control does
| Control | What it governs | When to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Voice Chat Volume | The level at which incoming voice chat is heard. | Raise it when teammates are difficult to hear; lower it if voices overpower game audio. |
| Microphone Volume | The level of your transmitted microphone signal. | Adjust it when other players report that your voice is too quiet or excessively loud. |
| Open Microphone Sensitivity | The threshold used by open-microphone activation. | It matters when using Open Mic; change it so normal speech activates the microphone without constantly opening it on background sound. |
The support documentation provides control ranges for this Black Ops Cold War version, but those ranges should not be treated as universal values for other Call of Duty games. If your release displays a different scale or label, use that release’s own description.

Push-to-talk versus open microphone
Push-to-talk and open mic solve different problems. Push-to-talk sends your voice while the configured key is held. Open mic sends voice when the microphone signal rises above a threshold.
| Mode | Activation behavior | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Push to Talk | Hold the assigned key to transmit; release it to stop. | Reduces accidental transmission of typing, fans, conversations and household noise. | You must remember to hold the key, and the key must be reachable without disrupting play. |
| Open Mic | The microphone activates whenever volume passes the configured threshold. | Lets you speak without holding a key. | Background sound can cross the threshold, and speech can be cut off if the threshold is set too high. |
The official PC guide describes Open Mic as activating “whenever the volume goes over a set threshold.” It recommends changing Microphone Activation Mode to Open Mic in Settings > Audio when you want to talk freely without holding the key.
When push-to-talk is the better choice
- Use it in a shared room where other conversations, music or a television could reach the microphone.
- Use it when you need predictable silence between callouts.
- Use it when you do not want every keyboard or controller sound sent to teammates.
- Choose a key you can hold with the hand that is not performing a time-critical action. If the default
Vis uncomfortable, rebind it.
When open mic is practical
- Use it when you need both hands continuously available and your surroundings are quiet.
- Set the sensitivity so ordinary speech crosses the threshold while quiet background sound does not.
- Switch back to push-to-talk if other players hear persistent noise or clipped speech.
Change the key without losing the setting
The audio menu contains the voice activation choice, while the keyboard-and-mouse settings contain editable keybinds. Treat them as two related checks:

- In Settings > Audio, verify that Microphone Activation Mode is still Push to Talk.
- Verify the displayed Push to Talk (Voice Chat) key. If it shows
V, that is the documented default; if it shows another key, that custom binding is the one the game will use. - Open Keyboard and Mouse settings and edit the binding if the current key conflicts with movement, equipment or another frequently used action.
- Use the new key consistently. Press and hold it before speaking, and release it after the callout is complete.
A key that appears correct but does not activate the microphone should be checked for a competing binding. The official guide specifically directs players to editable keyboard settings, so do not assume that restoring a general keyboard layout will restore the voice key.

Activation and loudness are separate decisions. You can keep push-to-talk while changing the level of your own microphone or the voices you hear.
If teammates cannot hear you clearly
- Confirm Voice Chat is enabled.
- Confirm you are holding the configured Push to Talk (Voice Chat) key, not the key you remember from a different title.
- Check the selected Game Chat or Party Chat channel.
- Increase or decrease Microphone Volume in small steps so your voice is neither too quiet nor overpowering.
- If you changed to Open Mic, review Open Microphone Sensitivity; a threshold that is too high can fail to open for normal speech.
If incoming players are too quiet or too loud
- Leave your microphone activation mode unchanged.
- Adjust Voice Chat Volume, which controls incoming voice level in the documented settings.
- If only some people are affected, check whether you and they are using the same chat channel before making a larger volume change.
If your microphone opens constantly
- Switch to Push to Talk if you are currently using Open Mic.
- If you prefer Open Mic, raise the sensitivity threshold gradually until normal background sound no longer activates it, while checking that ordinary speech still crosses the threshold.
- Use a keybind that is easy to hold for short, deliberate callouts.
Warzone Mobile uses a different voice-control context
The official Warzone Mobile guide places its voice options in the Social menu, not in the documented Black Ops Cold War PC path. Mobile players should therefore start in Social and use the labels presented there.

Documented Warzone Mobile behaviors
- The game provides a party-only game-voice option.
- It can mute you by default when you join a channel.
- Matches start with push-to-talk as the default behavior in the documented guide.
- The game includes controls for proximity chat.
These are mobile-specific behaviors from the official guide. They do not establish the menu layout or defaults for console or PC versions, and a mobile player should not look for a keyboard key such as V. Use the on-screen control and the current Social-menu descriptions instead.
Choosing mobile voice behavior
Party-only voice is appropriate when you want communication limited to your party. A mute-on-join default gives you a chance to check your surroundings before transmitting. Push-to-talk at match start provides deliberate activation, while proximity-chat controls are relevant when communication with nearby players is part of the mode. Change only the option that addresses the problem you are experiencing; a channel choice will not substitute for an activation setting.
What console and newer PC players should do

- Open the title’s current Settings menu.
- Look for Audio, Voice, Social or an equivalent communication section.
- Read the in-game description for microphone activation, channel selection and volume controls.
- Find the control assigned to voice activation in the current controller or keyboard settings.
- Check the game’s own documentation if a setting is missing or behaves differently from the Black Ops Cold War procedure.
The official Black Ops Cold War PC guide explicitly warns that menu controls can vary by game and directs players toward the descriptions in their own game. That qualification is important for current releases: a familiar name such as “push to talk” does not guarantee the same menu location, key or default.
Troubleshooting checklist
| Symptom | Most relevant checks | Why the check matters |
|---|---|---|
Nothing happens when you press V |
Confirm Push to Talk is selected; inspect the displayed binding; check Keyboard and Mouse settings for a changed or conflicting key. | V is the documented Black Ops Cold War PC default, not a guaranteed key for another title or a customized layout. |
| You can hear others, but they cannot hear you | Enable Voice Chat; hold the configured key; check Game Chat versus Party Chat; adjust Microphone Volume. | Activation, channel and transmitted level are separate settings. |
| Others hear constant noise | Use Push to Talk, or raise Open Microphone Sensitivity if you stay on Open Mic. | Open Mic responds to a volume threshold and can activate on background sound. |
| Speech is cut off in Open Mic | Lower the sensitivity threshold gradually, or switch to push-to-talk. | A threshold set too high may not recognize normal speech consistently. |
| Only some teammates hear you | Compare the selected chat channel and switch between Game Chat and Party Chat as appropriate. | Different channels reach different listeners. |
| You cannot find any of these labels | Confirm the title, platform and edition; use the current game’s in-game descriptions rather than assuming the Black Ops Cold War PC layout. | The documented sources are version-specific. |
A practical setup checklist
- Identify the exact Call of Duty title and platform.
- For documented Black Ops Cold War PC instructions, open Settings > Audio.
- Enable Voice Chat.
- Select Game Chat or Party Chat.
- Choose Push to Talk under Microphone Activation Mode.
- Confirm the displayed Push to Talk (Voice Chat) key;
Vis the documented default for that PC guide. - Adjust Voice Chat Volume, Microphone Volume and, when relevant, Open Microphone Sensitivity.
- Use Keyboard and Mouse settings to rebind the key if needed.
- For Warzone Mobile, start in Social and use its party, mute, push-to-talk and proximity-chat controls.
Source and version note
The Black Ops Cold War audio settings are documented by Activision Support for that game. The PC key information comes from the official Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War PC guide by James Mattone, published November 12, 2020, which states: “V – Push to Talk: Press and hold this key to activate your microphone in-game.” The same guide explains that Open Mic activates when volume exceeds a set threshold. The Warzone Mobile behavior comes from that game’s official voice guide. None of these sources certifies identical labels or defaults for every later Call of Duty release.
For the documented PC version, the essential sequence is straightforward: enable voice chat, choose the correct channel, select push-to-talk, hold the assigned key while speaking, and tune incoming and outgoing levels separately. When the title or platform changes, start over by identifying its current menu rather than carrying over an old key or path.
