What PS5 Remote Play does
PS5 Remote Play streams the PS5’s game screen and audio to a compatible Windows computer while the console runs the game. You control the session with a supported PlayStation controller connected to the PC. The app can connect to either a PS5 or PS4, but this guide focuses on PS5 setup.

Remote Play is not the same as downloading a game to Windows. The console remains responsible for running the game, so the experience depends on the console’s network connection, the PC’s connection, and the game itself. Sony notes that connectivity and game performance vary with the network environment and the title.
The setup has two separate parts: preparing the console and preparing the computer. Installing the Windows app alone is not enough. Remote Play must be enabled for the relevant PS5 user, and the account in the app must be associated with that console. If you want to start the console while it is sleeping, Rest Mode network settings are a separate step.

Check the Windows and PS5 requirements
Confirm these requirements before installing the app. Meeting the minimum PC specifications does not guarantee a particular resolution, frame rate, latency, or connection stability; those also depend on the network and game.

The Remote Play app itself is free. You also need a USB data cable suitable for the controller; a cable that only provides power will not establish the required Windows controller connection. There is no requirement to buy a special PC, monitor, or paid Remote Play subscription just to install and use the app. If you already own a supported controller and cable, the software portion of setup costs nothing.
Check the console’s system software before troubleshooting the PC. Sony calls for the latest PS5 system software, so an update may be necessary if the menu options or connection behavior do not match this guide. The Windows computer also needs a working sound card if you want to hear the streamed game audio.

- Open the official PlayStation page for the PS Remote Play app and download the Windows installer.
- Run the downloaded installation file. If Windows asks for permission to run it, confirm that you want to start the installer.
- Follow the prompts until installation completes. The same application supports connections to PS5 and PS4.
- Launch PS Remote Play from the Windows Start menu or its installed shortcut.
Installing the app does not by itself make the console discoverable. Remote Play must also be enabled on the PS5, and the account used in the app must match an account on that console. Downloading from PlayStation’s official page also avoids confusing the setup with unrelated streaming or remote-control software; Sony’s app is the one that provides the PS5 and PS4 connection choices.
Enable Remote Play on the PS5
- On the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Choose System.
- Open Remote Play.
- Turn on Enable Remote Play.
Sony allows this setting to be adjusted for each user. If several people use the console, make sure Remote Play is enabled for the PlayStation account you intend to use on the Windows PC. Enabling it for one user does not mean every account on the console has been configured identically.
This is the core console permission. It is needed whether the PS5 is fully on or in Rest Mode. The Rest Mode options described next only determine whether a sleeping console stays reachable and can be woken through the network.
Allow the PS5 to wake from Rest Mode
You can connect while the PS5 is in Rest Mode if the console is configured to remain reachable. This is optional: it adds convenience, but it does not replace the separate Enable Remote Play setting.
- On the PS5, open Settings.
- Choose System, then Power Saving.
- Open Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Enable Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
With both options enabled, the console can be started by a Remote Play connection when it is in Rest Mode. If you leave either option off, plan to turn on the PS5 normally before connecting. This setting is useful when the computer and console are in different rooms or when you want to begin a session without first reaching the console, but it does not improve the stream’s network speed by itself.

Connect a controller to the Windows PC
Sony lists three supported controller families for Windows Remote Play: DualSense, DualSense Edge, and DUALSHOCK 4. Sony’s Windows instructions specify a USB connection, so plug the controller directly into a working USB port on the PC before starting the session.

If you already own one of these controllers, use it with a suitable USB cable. If you do not, a DualSense is one supported option, but the setup does not require a particular retail model beyond Sony’s listed compatibility. Voice chat requires a microphone; the PC’s built-in microphone can be used if it is available and enabled.
A keyboard is not a universal replacement for a controller. Sony says keyboard input is available only in games that support hardware keyboards, so keep a supported controller connected for normal Remote Play use. A keyboard can therefore be useful for a title that explicitly supports it, but it should not be your fallback assumption for the PS5 interface or for games designed around controller input.
Sign in and connect to the PS5
- Open the PS Remote Play app on Windows.
- Select Sign In.
- Enter the same PlayStation account credentials used on the PS5.
- After signing in, select PS5 in the app.
- Wait while the app searches for the console associated with that account.
Sony says the app connects automatically when it finds the associated console. Keep the controller connected by USB while the connection is being established. When the session opens, the PS5 interface appears in the app window and controller input is sent to the console.
The account match matters even if the Windows computer is shared. Sign out of an old account in the app rather than assuming the console will switch users automatically. On a multi-user PS5, first confirm that the chosen account has Remote Play enabled and then use that exact account in Windows.
The app includes settings for Remote Play video quality, including options such as resolution and frame rate. Start with the default values, then adjust them if your connection is stable but you need a different balance between image quality and responsiveness. A lower setting can be a practical test when the session is unstable; it cannot make an incompatible game work.
Pair manually when the PS5 is not found
Automatic discovery is the normal route, but Sony provides a manual pairing process. Use it first while the PC is near the PS5 and both devices are on the same network. This local test helps distinguish a pairing problem from a problem connecting from outside the home.

- Choose System, then Remote Play.
- Select Pair Device.
- Note the number displayed by the PS5.
- In the Windows PS Remote Play app, enter that number when prompted.
Sony cautions that the PC may fail to search and connect if it has been a while since you last signed in. If discovery fails after a long gap, sign in again and test locally before attempting a connection from another location. Do not begin by changing several settings at once: a nearby, same-network test with the correct account gives you a known starting point. Once that works, you can test the intended location and Rest Mode behavior separately.

Understand the internet-speed recommendations
Sony’s support guidance and product overview both recommend at least 5 Mbps upload and download for Remote Play. Sony recommends 15 Mbps for the best performance. These are service recommendations, not laboratory results or a promise of a specific resolution, frame rate, latency, or stability.

Both directions matter. The PS5 sends game video and audio to the PC, while controller input and other session data travel back. A speed test that shows a strong download rate but a weak upload rate does not meet Sony’s stated recommendation in both directions.
Speed alone is not a guarantee. Wireless interference, congestion, distance from the router, other traffic, and the particular game can affect responsiveness. A fast connection can still feel poor if latency or instability is high, while a stable connection near the recommendation may provide a better session than a faster but inconsistent one. Treat 5 Mbps as the threshold Sony says to have available, and 15 Mbps in each direction as the more comfortable target—not as a promised display mode.

Change one factor at a time, such as the app’s resolution or frame-rate setting, so you can tell whether the improvement came from the quality setting or from a more stable connection.
What works—and what does not
Remote Play supports PS5 games that can be controlled with the listed controllers, but Sony’s compatibility notes exclude several categories. Do not assume that every PS5 title will work remotely.
- Games that require a VR headset are not compatible with Remote Play.
- Games requiring additional peripherals beyond the supported controllers are not compatible.
- PS Plus Premium game streaming is not compatible with Remote Play.
- Keyboard input works only in games that explicitly support hardware keyboards.
These limits concern the game’s hardware or streaming requirements, not a fault in the Windows installation. If a title depends on equipment that is not available through the Remote Play session, changing video settings or pairing the controller again will not make that title compatible. A game that launches normally on the console can still fall into one of these excluded categories.
Troubleshoot the most common setup failures
The app is installed but cannot find the PS5
- Confirm that Settings > System > Remote Play > Enable Remote Play is on for the intended PS5 user.
- Sign out and sign back in with the same PlayStation account used on the console.
- Move the Windows PC near the PS5 and place both devices on the same network for the initial test.
- Use Settings > System > Remote Play > Pair Device on the PS5 and enter the displayed number in the PC app.
- If the console has been in use with a different account, verify that the account signed into the app is associated with that console.
The PS5 is in Rest Mode and will not start
Check the two Rest Mode options under Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Both Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network must be enabled for network wake-up. Also verify that Remote Play itself remains enabled; Rest Mode access cannot substitute for that setting. If you have never completed a local connection, wake the PS5 normally and finish the first test before diagnosing remote wake-up.

The controller is not responding
- Use a USB cable and reconnect the controller directly to the PC.
- Confirm that the controller is one of Sony’s listed models: DualSense, DualSense Edge, or DUALSHOCK 4.
- Try another USB port or a different known-good data cable if Windows does not detect the controller.
- Keep the controller connected while launching and signing into the Remote Play app.
The picture is unstable or controls feel delayed
- Check that both upload and download speeds meet Sony’s 5 Mbps recommendation; 15 Mbps in each direction is Sony’s better-performance target.
- Test from a location with a more stable connection and fewer competing network activities.
- Use the app’s video-quality settings to reduce resolution or frame rate if your connection cannot sustain the selected quality.
- Remember that Sony does not guarantee a particular latency or image quality from the speed figures alone; the network environment and game also affect performance.
The game will not run through Remote Play
Check whether it requires a VR headset, an additional peripheral, or PS Plus Premium game streaming. Sony identifies those categories as incompatible. A keyboard will not solve the issue unless the game itself supports keyboard hardware.

A reliable first-session checklist
- The PC runs 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 and meets Sony’s processor, memory, storage, display, audio, and USB requirements.
- The PS5 has the latest system software requested by Sony.
- PS Remote Play is installed from the official PlayStation download page.
- Enable Remote Play is on under Settings > System > Remote Play.
- Rest Mode network options are enabled if you want the console to wake remotely.
- A supported controller is connected to the PC by USB.
- The app and PS5 use the same PlayStation account.
