The correct setup depends on your controller. A standard DualSense lets you remap buttons system-wide and change general trigger-effect strength. DualSense Edge adds named profiles, profile shortcuts, per-profile trigger deadzones, vibration, and trigger-effect settings. Access controller uses a separate Profile Library with controller slots. Use the menu path for your controller below rather than assuming all three models share the same workflow.
Choose the right PS5 controller workflow
PS5 separates these controls by controller model. The standard DualSense has accessibility remapping and a general controller setting for trigger effects, but PlayStation’s documented setup does not provide the Edge-style library of named profiles. DualSense Edge stores groups of settings as custom profiles. Access controller has its own profile library designed around orientation, accessibility assignments, and controller slots.

| Controller | Button-remapping location | Profile system | Trigger controls | Quick switching |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DualSense Wireless Controller | Settings > Accessibility > Controllers > Custom Button Assignments for DualSense Wireless Controller | No Edge-style named profile library documented for the standard controller; remapping is a general system setting | Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > Trigger Effect Intensity | Change the system setting when needed |
| DualSense Edge Wireless Controller | Inside each custom profile under Customize Button Assignments | Named Custom Profiles with assignable shortcuts | Per-profile Trigger Deadzone and Trigger Effect Intensity, plus vibration settings | Hold Fn and press an assigned action button |
| Access controller | Inside a profile in Profile Library | Up to 30 custom profiles saved on the PS5; up to three favorites assigned to controller slots | Profile options include stick sensitivity/deadzone; its profile controls are separate from Edge’s | Press the controller’s profile button to cycle assigned profiles |
That distinction answers the most common setup question: there is no single “controller profiles” menu that behaves identically for every PS5 controller. Start by identifying the hardware, then use the matching path. A setting missing from one menu may simply belong to another controller’s feature set.
Remap buttons on a standard DualSense
Open Custom Button Assignments
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Accessibility.
- Choose Controllers.
- Open Custom Button Assignments for DualSense Wireless Controller.
- Select the button you want to change, choose the replacement function, and select Apply.
The assignment is a system-level change for the DualSense. It is useful when a physical button is difficult to reach, when you need a different hand position, or when a game’s default layout does not suit you. The menu changes what the PS5 sends for that button; it does not create a collection of named configurations that you can cycle through with a shortcut.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Before applying a layout, write down the normal function of each changed button. That small checklist makes it easier to reverse the change later and prevents confusion when the game’s on-screen prompts still show the original button labels. Make one change at a time, apply it, and test it in the game or a system menu before changing several controls at once.
Change standard DualSense trigger-effect strength
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accessories.
- Select Controller (General).
- Choose Trigger Effect Intensity.
- Select the strength you want from the choices shown on your console.
This control changes how strongly the adaptive trigger effect resists your pull. It does not change the point at which a game begins reading L2 or R2 input. That input range is a different control available in DualSense Edge profiles.
What a standard DualSense can and cannot do
- You can remap buttons through Accessibility and adjust trigger-effect strength through Accessories.
- The cited PlayStation instructions describe these as general settings, not an Edge-style set of named profiles with per-profile trigger deadzones.
- If you need several layouts that can be recalled during play, the standard DualSense workflow requires you to return to system settings and change the active assignment rather than using Edge’s Fn shortcuts.
Basic remapping therefore does not require buying another controller. The limitation is convenience: the standard controller’s documented workflow is global, so it is best for one layout you use broadly rather than multiple game-specific arrangements that must be swapped quickly.

Create a custom profile on DualSense Edge
Build the profile
- Open Settings > Accessories.
- Select DualSense Edge Wireless Controller.
- Choose Custom Profiles.
- Select Create Custom Profile.
- Enter a profile name and select OK.
- Choose the setting you want to customize. The documented categories are Button Assignments, Stick Sensitivity/Deadzone, Trigger Deadzone, Vibration Intensity, and Trigger Effect Intensity.
A newly created profile starts in the Unassigned Profiles tab. It is saved, but it will not be available through the controller’s in-game shortcut until you assign it to one.
Use names that describe the purpose rather than only the game title. Names such as “Default,” “Low trigger effect,” or “Alternate controls” make the active choice clear when several profiles have similar assignments. Keep a conservative profile with familiar settings as a baseline; it is useful for checking whether an unusual response comes from a custom adjustment or from the game.
Assign a profile to a shortcut
- In Custom Profiles, find the profile in Unassigned Profiles.
- Select Assign beside the profile.
- Choose one of the available shortcuts.
The default profile is reached with Fn + triangle, and that shortcut cannot be changed. Your created profiles can be assigned to the other three action-button shortcuts. This gives you a practical way to keep separate layouts—for example, a normal layout, a lower-trigger-resistance layout, and a layout with a different stick response—without editing settings every time.
Assignment is separate from creation. If a profile appears correctly in the library but does nothing when you press a shortcut, return to the Unassigned Profiles tab and complete the Assign step. Also note which action button you selected so that you do not accidentally replace a shortcut you already use.

Hold Fn and press the action button associated with the profile. Use Fn + triangle for the default profile, or use whichever of the other three action buttons you assigned to your custom profiles. If nothing changes, verify that the profile is assigned rather than still listed under Unassigned Profiles.

Switching changes the saved group of settings, not just the button map. A profile can therefore alter button assignments, stick behavior, vibration, trigger deadzone, and trigger-effect intensity together. If a game suddenly feels different after a shortcut press, check the active profile before editing the game’s own controls.
Remap DualSense Edge buttons safely
Change an assignment inside a profile
- Open Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > Custom Profiles.
- Select the profile you want to edit, or create one first.
- Choose Customize Button Assignments.
- Select a button.
- Choose its replacement function.
- Select Apply.
Assignments belong to the selected profile. Switching to another profile restores that profile’s assignments, so check the profile name before editing if you have several similar layouts.
Edge assignment restrictions
- The Fn button cannot be reassigned.
- Circle and cross must always have an assignment.
- L2 and R2 can be swapped with each other.
- Another button cannot be given an L2 or R2 trigger function.
- You cannot assign multiple functions to L2 or R2.
These restrictions matter when planning a one-handed or accessibility-focused layout. If the function you want is unavailable in the picker, it may be a controller rule rather than an error in the profile.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Plan around the restrictions before you build a complete layout. In particular, do not leave circle or cross without a function, and do not expect to duplicate an L2 or R2 function on another button. Swapping the two triggers is supported; assigning a trigger action to a third control is not.
Understand Edge trigger deadzone versus trigger-effect intensity
Trigger deadzone changes the input range
Trigger Deadzone controls how far L2 or R2 must move before the game registers input and where the input reaches its maximum. It changes the signal sent by the trigger; it does not change the physical resistance you feel.
PlayStation’s example uses a range from 30 to 70. With that range, pressing past 30 begins registration and 70 is the maximum point. Presses shallower than 30 or deeper than 70 do not register according to the documented example. The Edge interface includes a playtest, and it can apply the same deadzone settings to the left and right triggers.
A larger starting value can prevent a slight resting movement from being read as input. A different end value changes where the controller considers the trigger fully engaged. Test the range in the on-screen playtest and in the game itself, because a game may use the trigger signal differently.
Adjust one end of the range at a time so you can tell what changed. If the game responds before you intend, investigate the starting point. If full input arrives sooner or later than expected, investigate the maximum point. The playtest shows the controller’s configured range, while the target game confirms how that range feels in actual play.

Trigger Effect Intensity changes resistance
Trigger Effect Intensity changes the strength of the DualSense adaptive trigger effect—the resistance or tension you feel while pulling L2 or R2. On DualSense Edge, it can be stored separately in each custom profile. On a standard DualSense, it is the general setting under Settings > Accessories > Controller (General).
Do not use trigger deadzone and trigger-effect intensity interchangeably. Deadzone changes the input window; effect intensity changes the physical effect. You can lower the effect while leaving the input range unchanged, or alter the input range while keeping the effect strength the same.
Other Edge settings worth assigning per profile
- Stick Sensitivity/Deadzone: adjust how stick movement is interpreted and how much movement is ignored around the center.
- Vibration Intensity: reduce or increase controller vibration for that profile.
- Button Assignments: create a layout for a particular game or physical-use requirement.
- Trigger Deadzone: set the L2/R2 input range independently from the trigger effect.
- Trigger Effect Intensity: set the resistance strength independently from the deadzone.
Because these options are saved together, decide whether a profile is intended for a particular game, a particular physical grip, or simply a different level of feedback. A profile made for accessibility may prioritize button reach and a wider usable input range; another may retain the standard layout but reduce vibration and trigger resistance. The settings are independent, so changing one does not automatically change the others.
Set up Access controller profiles
Create and assign a profile
- Open Settings > Accessories.
- Select Access controller.
- Open Profile Library.
- Create a profile or select an existing profile to edit.
- Configure the controller orientation and button assignments, along with the available stick sensitivity/deadzone options.
- Assign the profile to a controller slot.
The Access controller can save up to 30 custom profiles on the PS5. You can assign up to three favorites to slots on the controller. Press the controller’s profile button to cycle through the profiles assigned to those slots.
This is a different system from DualSense Edge. Access controller profiles are built around its orientation, assignments, and slots; do not expect Edge’s Fn-plus-action-button shortcuts or Edge’s trigger-setting categories to appear here.
The library and slot limits serve different purposes. You can keep a larger collection on the console, but only the selected favorites are placed on controller slots for quick cycling. If a profile is saved but does not appear during cycling, check whether it has been assigned to one of those slots.
Which setup fits your goal?
| If you want to… | Use this path | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Change one button layout on an ordinary PS5 controller | DualSense Accessibility settings | Custom Button Assignments changes the system mapping without requiring a different controller. |
| Make adaptive triggers feel less forceful | DualSense general Trigger Effect Intensity, or an Edge profile | Both expose effect strength; Edge can preserve different strengths in different profiles. |
| Switch several layouts during a game | DualSense Edge Custom Profiles | Profiles can be assigned to shortcuts and changed with Fn plus an action button. |
| Adjust when L2/R2 input starts and reaches maximum | DualSense Edge Trigger Deadzone | Deadzone changes the input range rather than the trigger’s physical effect. |
| Use orientation-focused accessibility layouts with controller slots | Access controller Profile Library | It supports up to 30 PS5 profiles and up to three favorites assigned to slots. |
You do not need a DualSense Edge for basic remapping or for changing standard DualSense trigger-effect strength. Edge becomes relevant when saved, named configurations and rapid switching are the reason for changing settings. Access controller is the more appropriate route when its accessibility-oriented orientation and slot workflow match your setup.
Choosing between global settings and profiles
Choose the standard DualSense path when you want one system-wide button arrangement and a general trigger-effect adjustment. Choose Edge when you need several saved combinations, per-profile trigger controls, or quick switching without leaving a game. Choose Access controller when the orientation, assignment, stick options, and controller-slot workflow are central to how you play.

A remapped button performs an unexpected action
- Confirm which controller profile is active, especially on DualSense Edge.
- Open the game’s own controller settings and check for a conflicting assignment. PlayStation specifically warns that game mappings can clash with DualSense Edge profile assignments.
- Test the button in another game or in a system menu to determine whether the behavior comes from the PS5 mapping or the game’s own layout.
A prompt shown by the game may still display its original symbol even though the system sends a different function. Use an action with an obvious result when testing, then document the final layout so other players know which physical button now performs that action.
An Edge profile will not switch
- Return to Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > Custom Profiles.
- Check whether the profile is still in Unassigned Profiles.
- Use Assign to place it on one of the three custom action-button shortcuts.
- Hold Fn while pressing the assigned action button. Remember that Fn + triangle is reserved for the default profile.
The trigger feels different from the trigger response
Check the two controls separately. If the physical resistance is the problem, change Trigger Effect Intensity. If the game starts reading input too early, too late, or reaches full input at an inconvenient point, adjust Trigger Deadzone on Edge. A deadzone change will not necessarily make the trigger physically lighter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAn expected setting is missing
Verify the controller model first. Standard DualSense instructions place button remapping under Accessibility and trigger-effect intensity under Accessories, while Edge settings appear inside Custom Profiles. Access controller settings appear under Profile Library. A menu documented for one controller should not be assumed to exist on another.
Manage Edge profiles from Windows
PlayStation also documents creating, editing, and switching DualSense Edge profiles with PlayStation Accessories on Windows. The PC workflow can save button and stick settings, and PlayStation says saved profiles can be used on another supported device. Follow the current official PC connection and app instructions for the supported Windows setup; the exact connection steps can change independently of the PS5 menu path.
A reliable setup sequence
- Identify whether you are using standard DualSense, DualSense Edge, or Access controller.
- Set the basic button behavior first.
- On Edge, create a named profile before changing stick, trigger, vibration, or effect settings.
- Use the Edge playtest when setting trigger deadzones, and test the result in the target game.
- Assign Edge profiles to shortcuts or Access profiles to controller slots before starting play.
- Check the game’s own controller menu if an assignment behaves unexpectedly.
- Keep one conservative default profile so you can return to a familiar layout quickly.
When you finish, test every changed button, both triggers, and the shortcut itself. Then switch away and back to confirm that the intended profile restores the same settings. This final check catches the two most common setup mistakes: editing the wrong profile and creating a profile without assigning it to a shortcut or slot.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I remap buttons on a regular PS5 DualSense?
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Controllers > Custom Button Assignments for DualSense Wireless Controller. Select a button, choose its replacement function, and select Apply. This is a general system setting rather than a library of switchable named profiles.

How do I lower the resistance of PS5 adaptive triggers?
For a standard DualSense, open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > Trigger Effect Intensity and choose the desired strength. On DualSense Edge, set Trigger Effect Intensity inside the relevant custom profile.
What is the difference between trigger deadzone and trigger-effect intensity?
Trigger deadzone changes the L2/R2 input range: where input begins and where it reaches its maximum. Trigger-effect intensity changes the physical resistance or tension you feel. Changing one does not automatically change the other.
Why can’t I switch my DualSense Edge profile during a game?
A created profile must be assigned to a shortcut first. Check Custom Profiles and look in Unassigned Profiles. Select Assign, choose one of the three custom action-button shortcuts, then hold Fn and press that action button. Fn plus triangle is reserved for the default profile.
Can I remap the Fn button on DualSense Edge?
No. PlayStation documents Fn as non-reassignable. Circle and cross must retain assignments, and L2 and R2 can only be swapped with each other; another button cannot take a trigger function or duplicate one.
How many Access controller profiles can I save?
Up to 30 custom profiles can be saved on the PS5. Up to three favorites can be assigned to controller slots, and pressing the controller’s profile button cycles through the profiles assigned to those slots.
Why does a remapped button behave differently in one game?
The game may have its own controller assignment that conflicts with the PS5 or DualSense Edge mapping. Check the game’s controller settings, confirm the active profile, and test the physical button in another game or a system menu.
The Bottom Line
Use Accessibility for standard DualSense button remapping and Accessories for its general trigger-effect strength. Use DualSense Edge Custom Profiles when you need named layouts, per-profile trigger deadzones, and Fn shortcuts. Use Access controller’s Profile Library and slots for its orientation-focused accessibility workflow. Keep trigger input range and trigger-effect resistance separate, assign profiles before trying to switch them, and check the game’s own mappings when behavior is unexpected.
