How to Set Up PS2 Emulation on Android and Load Games You Own

You can run PlayStation 2 games on Android, but an emulator alone is not enough. You need a compatible phone or tablet, a verified emulator build, a BIOS dumped from your own PS2, and game images made from discs you own. The practical order is: check the device, install the emulator from a trustworthy project release, prepare your BIOS and disc images, select their folders, then configure controls and graphics.

This guide uses the setup information published by the NetherSX2 project and AetherSX2-derived documentation. It does not provide or link to BIOS files or commercial game downloads. Copyright and format-shifting rules differ by country, so confirm the rules that apply where you live.

What you need before installing anything

Prepare the files and hardware first. Doing so prevents most first-launch problems, especially the common mistake of installing an emulator and then searching the web for a BIOS or game ROM.

Item Published guidance What it means in practice
Android version Android 8.0 (Oreo) or newer, according to the NetherSX2 repository Older devices fall below the project’s stated minimum.
Processor architecture ARM64 or x86_64 Check your device’s CPU ABI before sideloading an APK.
Memory 2 GB minimum; 4 GB or more recommended The minimum is not a promise of smooth gameplay.
Performance class AetherSX2-derived guidance recommends roughly Snapdragon 845-class performance for good results Game, GPU driver, thermals, emulator version and graphics settings still determine the result.
BIOS Required; provide one dumped from your own console The emulator does not include a BIOS.
Game image Make an image from a disc you own Copy the resulting file to Android rather than downloading a ROM.
Controller Optional; touchscreen controls are available A Bluetooth pad can improve comfort, but pairing and mapping may be necessary.

Storage needs depend on the discs you image and the number of games you keep. Leave room for Android, the emulator, save data and temporary files instead of filling internal storage completely.

Choose a verifiable emulator build

Use the project’s repository and linked release channel

The NetherSX2 repository describes the project as an Android PS2 emulator based on PCSX2 and provides an installation outline with a linked APK location. Start from that repository, confirm that the release artifact is linked by the project, and compare the release name and version before installing. Search results also contain unrelated pages using similar emulator names, BIOS-download language and advertising-heavy APK links. Those pages are not a safe substitute for a project-controlled release.

A September 2026 setup guide recommends the NetherSX2 Classic GitHub releases and describes the current process as APK sideloading. Treat that as secondary guidance: verify the exact project release yourself, and do not assume that every page using the NetherSX2 name is affiliated with the project.

Understand the AetherSX2 information correctly

AetherSX2’s FAQ is historical documentation. It recommended installing through Google Play, described direct APK installation as not recommended, and warned that devices excluded from the Play Store version might be too slow. That page does not establish current availability. Use it for concepts such as BIOS requirements and controller mapping, not as proof that a particular current download channel still exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install an APK only when you trust its source

  1. Open the emulator project’s repository and follow its release link rather than an advertisement or an unofficial download page.
  2. Check that your device meets the Android version and CPU-architecture requirements.
  3. Download the APK, open it from Android’s file manager, and read the installation prompt. Android may ask you to allow installs from that source; the wording and location vary by Android release and device manufacturer.
  4. Install only after confirming that the file came from the project’s linked release. If you enabled permission for an outside source, disable it again after installation through the same Android security screen.

If Android refuses the package, first check the device architecture, Android version and whether you downloaded the correct release variant. Do not solve an installation error by switching to an unverified mirror.

How to obtain and add the PS2 BIOS

Why the BIOS is mandatory

The BIOS is the console firmware that the emulator uses during startup. AetherSX2-derived documentation states that a BIOS image is required to play games and is not optional. NetherSX2 likewise says that it does not ship BIOS files and that users must supply their own legally obtained copy.

Dump it from your own PS2

Use a suitable homebrew BIOS-dumping application on your own console, following the current instructions from a reputable homebrew project. The available sources for this guide establish the requirement to dump your own BIOS but do not verify a primary, step-by-step dumping manual, so menu names and procedures should come from that homebrew project rather than from an invented recipe here.

  • Compatible with Windows and Android.
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)

  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

After the dump completes, copy the resulting BIOS file to Android over USB. Keep an archival copy in a secure location, and do not upload it to a public file host or obtain a replacement from a BIOS-download site. A game purchase does not create a universal right to download firmware or a game image from an unofficial source; local law and license terms control.

Place the BIOS where the emulator can read it

The NetherSX2 project describes a /bios/ folder, while the app can also let you select another directory. You can create a clearly named BIOS folder in internal storage or on an accessible external volume, copy the dump there, and select that folder during first launch. Keep the file directly inside the selected folder rather than several levels deeper so the scanner can see it.

Make game images from discs you own

Create an image on a computer

The emulator documentation describes dumping a PS2 disc to an ISO with a disc-imaging tool such as ImgBurn. Use the physical disc you own, allow the imaging process to finish, and check that the resulting file is complete before transferring it. This is a workflow for your own discs, not a recommendation to download commercial ROMs.

Copy the image to Android

  1. Connect the phone or tablet to the computer with a USB cable and choose Android’s file-transfer mode.
  2. Create a games folder, such as /games/, or choose another location with enough free space.
  3. Copy the ISO into that folder and safely disconnect the device when the transfer ends.
  4. If your installed build supports CHD files, a September 2026 secondary guide says CHD can reduce storage use. Treat that as build-specific guidance: confirm CHD support in the emulator version you installed before converting or deleting an ISO.

Do not rename an image while it is still copying, and do not launch it until the transfer has completed. A partial file can appear in a file browser while still being unusable in the emulator.

First-run setup: select the BIOS and game directory

Use the setup wizard

On first launch, NetherSX2’s current guidance and the September 2026 setup guide describe a wizard that asks for a BIOS location and a game directory. Select the folder containing your BIOS dump, approve Android’s file-access request, then select the folder containing your ISO files. The exact labels can change between app versions and Android releases; choose the equivalent BIOS and games controls if the wording differs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the emulator and continue through the initial setup until it asks for BIOS access.
  2. Navigate to the folder that contains the BIOS file and grant the requested access.
  3. When prompted for games, choose /games/ or your chosen image folder and grant access.
  4. Let the emulator scan the directory. If it offers a rescan command, run it after adding more images.
  5. Confirm that the BIOS is shown as recognized and that at least one game appears in the library before changing advanced settings.

If Android cannot show your folder

Android’s storage permissions can hide folders or prevent an app from reading them. Reopen the folder picker, grant access to the parent folder Android presents, and avoid placing files inside a protected system directory. If the app remembers an old location, remove that entry or use its storage settings to choose the folder again. Menu names differ by build, so follow the current picker rather than an older screenshot.

Configure controls for touch or Bluetooth

On-screen controls

NetherSX2 provides on-screen controls, so a physical gamepad is not required. Start with the default layout, then adjust button size, position and opacity until the controls do not cover important game information. Save a profile after making changes so a later reset does not erase your layout.

Pair a Bluetooth controller

  1. Put the controller into pairing mode and connect it through Android’s Bluetooth settings.
  2. Open the emulator’s input or controller settings and select the connected device.
  3. Map the PS2 buttons, analog sticks, triggers and start/select controls. Some Android vendors expose buttons differently, so a manual mapping pass may be needed.
  4. Test every input in a game, including both analog sticks and pressure-sensitive actions where the title uses them.

Compatibility varies by controller and Android device. A Bluetooth pad is an optional accessory, not a requirement for this setup.

Set graphics conservatively before chasing performance

PS2 emulation is sensitive to the game, chipset, GPU driver, thermal conditions, emulator version and renderer. Neither the NetherSX2 requirements nor the AetherSX2-derived documentation guarantees full-speed performance for a particular phone or every game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Begin with the emulator’s default graphics settings.
  • If a game is slow or visually broken, test one renderer or graphics option at a time and note the original value so you can undo the change.
  • Close other demanding apps and test again after the device has cooled. Sustained heat can reduce performance.
  • Use a conservative resolution and enhancement level before trying higher-quality options.
  • Keep a per-game profile when one title needs different settings from the rest of your library.

The AetherSX2-derived recommendations are version-specific and may not transfer directly to every NetherSX2 build. A setting that helps one title can create glitches in another, so treat tweaks as troubleshooting experiments rather than universal fixes.

Launch a game and verify the complete chain

  1. Open the game library and select an image you created from your own disc.
  2. Wait for the PS2 boot sequence. The first run may take longer while folders and shaders are initialized.
  3. Confirm that controls respond, audio is present and the game reaches its menu.
  4. Create a save inside the game, exit normally and relaunch it to confirm that the emulator can write and read save data.

If the game opens successfully but later freezes, record the title, emulator version, device model, graphics renderer and the last setting you changed. That information makes troubleshooting more precise than repeatedly changing several options at once.

Troubleshooting common setup failures

The emulator says no BIOS is available

  • Confirm that the BIOS dump came from your own console and that the file transfer completed.
  • Check that you selected the folder containing the file, not a neighboring folder or the file’s parent directory several levels above it.
  • Reopen Android’s file picker and grant access again if the permission was denied or revoked.
  • Restart the emulator after correcting the path, then check its BIOS status before launching a game.

The library is empty

  • Verify that the ISO or supported CHD file is inside the exact directory selected as the games folder.
  • Run a manual rescan or restart the app.
  • Check the transfer on a computer or file manager to ensure the image is not zero bytes or still being copied.
  • If Android cannot expose the storage location, choose a folder the system file picker allows the emulator to access.

A game is very slow

  • Confirm the image is complete and that the BIOS is recognized.
  • Return graphics settings to defaults, then lower demanding enhancements before testing another renderer.
  • Test after the device cools and close background apps.
  • Compare the device with the project’s published minimums and the approximately Snapdragon 845-class guidance; meeting a requirement still does not guarantee a particular title will run well.

The picture has glitches or a black screen

Different games exercise different PS2 hardware features. Try a conservative renderer and default settings, changing one option at a time. If the problem follows only one title, keep a separate profile for that game rather than destabilizing settings for the whole library.

The controller connects but buttons do nothing

Check Android’s Bluetooth connection, select the controller in the emulator and remap every button manually. Vendor-specific input behavior can affect the mapping, so test in-game instead of assuming that a successful Bluetooth pairing means the PS2 layout is correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The APK will not install

Recheck Android 8.0 or newer, ARM64 or x86_64 support and the release variant you downloaded. If all three are correct, obtain the package again from the project’s linked release channel. Do not install a similarly named package from a site offering BIOS or game downloads.

Organize and protect your files

Keep BIOS files and game images in separate, clearly named folders. A simple structure such as /bios/ for firmware and /games/ for images makes the setup wizard and later rescans easier. Back up save data and your legally created images to storage you control; an emulator update or a failed transfer should not be your only copy.

When moving a large library, transfer a few images first and confirm that they launch before copying everything. This isolates permission or storage problems early and avoids repeating a long transfer.

What this setup can and cannot promise

The published requirements establish a baseline, not a performance guarantee. Android 8.0 or newer, a supported 64-bit architecture and at least 2 GB of RAM are necessary according to the NetherSX2 repository, with 4 GB or more recommended. The AetherSX2-derived guidance points to roughly Snapdragon 845-class performance for good results, while warning that heavier games may struggle on slower hardware. Actual results remain title- and device-dependent.

The reliable boundary is simple: use a verifiable emulator release, provide a BIOS dumped from your own PS2, create images from discs you own, grant the app access to the folders that contain those files, and change performance settings cautiously. If any one of those links is missing, troubleshooting the graphics settings will not fix the underlying setup.
