How to set up private DNS ad blocking on Android and iPhone

On Android, open Settings → Network & internet (or Wi‑Fi & Internet) → Advanced → Private DNS, choose Private DNS provider hostname, enter a filtering hostname such as dns.adguard-dns.com, and tap Save. On iPhone, the equivalent is normally a DNS configuration profile or the provider’s app—not an Android-style hostname box.

DNS blocking can stop many third-party advertising, tracking, and malware domains across apps and browsers. It cannot remove every ad: content delivered from the same domain as the material you want, or inserted directly by an app, may remain. DNS-over-TLS encrypts DNS lookups to a compatible provider, but it does not make all of your internet traffic anonymous.

What private DNS ad blocking does

Whenever an app or website needs to contact a hostname, your device normally asks a DNS resolver for its IP address. A filtering resolver checks that hostname against ad, tracker, malware, family-safety, or custom rules. If the domain is listed, the resolver returns a blocked result instead of the normal address; if it is allowed, the lookup proceeds normally.

Android’s Private DNS setting uses DNS-over-TLS (DoT) when you enter a provider hostname. The DNS request travels through an encrypted TLS connection to that provider rather than being sent as ordinary DNS to the local network. The encryption covers the DNS exchange, not the rest of the connection: the websites, apps, VPNs, and services you use still generate their own traffic, and the DNS provider can still see the queries it receives under its current logging policy.

On iPhone, iOS does not generally expose the same universal “Private DNS provider hostname” field. Providers usually deliver a configuration profile or an app that installs the DNS settings for the device. The profile must remain installed and enabled for filtering to continue.

There is no universal “percentage of ads blocked.” Results depend on the provider’s lists, the app or browser, regional domains, and whether an ad shares a hostname with wanted content.

What you need before changing DNS

  • An active internet connection for the initial setup. A hostname cannot be validated while the device is completely offline.
  • A filtering DNS provider and the exact hostname it publishes for your chosen service. Use a hostname, not a random numeric IP address.
  • Permission to change network settings. A work- or school-managed phone may prevent profile installation or DNS changes.
  • A recovery plan: know how to return Android Private DNS to Automatic, or how to remove an iPhone profile from VPN & Device Management.
  • If you use a VPN, security filter, parental-control app, or enterprise management profile, check for DNS conflicts before troubleshooting. Such software may deliberately replace the device DNS setting.

Set up private DNS ad blocking on Android

The labels differ among Android versions and manufacturers, but the setting is built into Android. If the path below is not present, search Settings for Private DNS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Open the Private DNS setting

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Network & internet. Some phones call this Wi‑Fi & Internet or place it under a similar network heading.
  3. Tap Advanced.
  4. Tap Private DNS.

On some manufacturer interfaces, Private DNS appears directly under the network page rather than inside Advanced. The search box in Settings is the fastest route when the menu wording differs.

2. Choose a provider hostname

Select Private DNS provider hostname. Type one complete hostname in the field, with no spaces, quotation marks, or https:// prefix.

Use case Hostname or format What it provides
General ad and tracker blocking dns.adguard-dns.com AdGuard’s published default server for blocking ads and trackers.
Personalized AdGuard DNS service {Your_Device_ID}.d.adguard-dns.com A device-specific hostname format documented for a personal server configuration. Replace the brace-delimited value with the device ID supplied by the service; do not type the braces literally unless the provider tells you to.
Another provider The provider’s documented DNS-over-TLS hostname Filtering depends on that provider’s lists and policy. A numeric resolver address is not a substitute for the DoT hostname field.

The public hostname is the simplest no-account example. An account-based hostname can expose additional controls such as custom blocklists, allowlists, and query logs, depending on the provider’s plan and current policy.

3. Save and test

  1. Tap Save.
  2. Open a browser and load several ordinary sites. Test both Wi‑Fi and mobile data if you use both.
  3. Open an app that previously displayed third-party advertising and check whether connections still work. A missing ad alone is not proof that every ad source is blocked.

Android may show a status such as “Connected” or simply keep the setting selected. If all connectivity stops immediately, return to Private DNS and choose Automatic before investigating the hostname or the network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How Android’s Automatic mode differs

Android P (Android 9) introduced the system Private DNS modes. In Automatic, Android uses the network-provided DNS and attempts a TLS connection to port 853 when the network advertises a compatible resolver; if that attempt is unavailable, it can fall back to ordinary UDP DNS on port 53. Automatic mode therefore does not mean “use an ad-blocking resolver.” To select filtering, you must enter a provider hostname manually.

Android troubleshooting

The hostname is rejected

  • Check every character against the provider’s documentation. The hostname is not a web address and must not contain a path.
  • Remove leading or trailing spaces. Password managers and copy-and-paste can add invisible whitespace.
  • Confirm that the phone is online through Wi‑Fi or mobile data so Android can validate the resolver.
  • Try the provider’s public hostname if a device-specific hostname fails. If the public value works, the issue is likely the account ID or the format of the personalized hostname.

Internet access stops after saving

  1. Go to Settings → Network & internet (or Wi‑Fi & Internet) → Advanced → Private DNS.
  2. Select Automatic and tap Save.
  3. Test the same Wi‑Fi network and a different network, such as mobile data. A captive portal, firewall, or network that blocks encrypted DNS may be the cause.
  4. If Automatic works but the filtering hostname does not, verify the spelling and ask the provider whether its DoT service is available on port 853.

A site or app breaks while DNS blocking is enabled

DNS filtering can block a hostname that an app needs for sign-in, media, telemetry, or a legitimate content-delivery function. First switch to Automatic to confirm that the DNS filter is responsible. If the provider offers an allowlist or user rules, allow only the required domain and retest; otherwise keep Automatic for that network or use the provider’s app-level controls.

The setting is missing

Manufacturer software changes menu names and placement. Search Settings for Private DNS. If search returns nothing, the phone may run an Android version without the built-in control, or an administrator may have hidden it. In that case, a provider app or a managed profile may be the available route.

Set up DNS ad blocking on iPhone

iPhone setup normally uses a DNS configuration profile. The profile applies the provider’s DNS settings at the device level while it is installed and enabled. iOS wording and approval screens vary by release, so read each screen rather than accepting an unidentified profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Select a DNS configuration

Use the provider’s iOS instructions to select a server and choose Download configuration profile. A general ad-and-tracker server is the usual starting point. Providers may also publish a non-filtering server and a family-protection server that blocks adult-content domains and enables Safe Search or Safe Mode where supported.

2. Review and install the profile

  1. Start the profile download from the provider’s official page or app.
  2. When iOS reports that a profile has been downloaded, open the system prompt or the corresponding profile-management screen.
  3. Review the provider name, the DNS service described, and the domains or settings the profile requests. Do not install a profile whose publisher you cannot identify.
  4. Tap the install and approval controls shown by your iOS version. You may need to enter the device passcode.
  5. Return to the provider’s instructions or profile-management screen and confirm that the profile is enabled.

A custom profile can be created with a provider’s profile constructor when you need a particular server, category, or account configuration. The available fields depend on that provider’s tool.

3. Confirm operation

Browse several sites and open representative apps. Test on both Wi‑Fi and cellular data if the profile is intended to cover both. If a VPN or another DNS profile is active, iOS may give precedence to one configuration; disable competing services temporarily while testing.

Remove or disable an iPhone DNS profile

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to General → VPN & Device Management (the exact label can vary by iOS release).
  3. Select the DNS profile and review its details.
  4. Choose the remove or delete command, then authenticate if iOS asks for the device passcode.
  5. Reconnect to Wi‑Fi or toggle the affected network connection if apps continue using stale DNS results.

Removing the profile returns control to the remaining network, VPN, or DNS settings. If the phone is supervised by an employer or school, only the administrator may be able to remove it.

Choose the right filtering mode

Mode Best for Trade-offs
Default ad-and-tracker server Most users who want fewer third-party ads and tracking domains Can block a required domain; does not remove every in-app or first-party ad.
Non-filtering server Diagnosing connectivity or comparing an unfiltered baseline Provides DNS resolution without the ad, tracker, or family filtering you wanted.
Family-protection server Households that also want adult-content filtering and Safe Search/Safe Mode where the service supports it Broader blocking can cause false positives and is not a substitute for device supervision.
Account-based or personal server Users who need custom blocklists, allowlists, per-device rules, or logs Requires account setup and a device-specific hostname; privacy and retention depend on the provider’s current policy.

Compare providers on filtering scope, customization, platform delivery, failure recovery, and privacy policy. A provider that supports Android DoT but offers no practical iPhone profile may not fit a household using both platforms. Conversely, an account with detailed logs may be useful for troubleshooting but deserves closer privacy review than a fixed public hostname.

Custom filters and allowlists

DNS services commonly combine a selected server with filter lists and user rules. A block rule can deny a hostname; an allow rule can override a broader list when a legitimate service is accidentally blocked.

AdGuard’s syntax documentation uses this distinction: a rule can block example.org while leaving www.example.org allowed. The practical lesson is to target the narrowest hostname that fixes the problem. A broad rule for an entire parent domain can restore an unwanted tracker or unblock more content than intended.

  1. Identify the exact hostname involved. Provider query logs, if available, can help, but do not assume every logged request is an advertisement.
  2. Add a narrow allowlist entry for the required host.
  3. Wait for the provider’s rule update or clear the device’s DNS cache by reconnecting the network.
  4. Retest the affected feature and check that unrelated ad or tracker domains remain blocked.

If the service is delivered from the same hostname as the content you want, an allowlist may make the feature work but also permit the associated ads. DNS cannot distinguish individual files or page elements inside one allowed hostname.

What DNS ad blocking can and cannot block

Usually effective against

  • Third-party advertising domains that are separately resolved from the requested content.
  • Known tracking and analytics domains included in the provider’s lists.
  • Known malware or phishing domains when the provider maintains those categories.
  • Some telemetry and embedded content that depends on a blocked hostname.

Not guaranteed to block

  • Ads served from the same hostname as the video, article, or app content.
  • Ads inserted directly by a first-party app without a separately blockable DNS request.
  • Advertising delivered from changing or previously unlisted domains.
  • Content already cached on the device.
  • Elements controlled by a browser or app after the network request has been allowed.

Browser content blockers and some app-level blockers can inspect page elements or use additional rules, so they may remove material that DNS filtering cannot. They also require their own permissions and can have different battery, privacy, and compatibility trade-offs.

Does private DNS block YouTube ads?

Not reliably. DNS filtering may block a separate advertising, tracking, or telemetry hostname when that hostname is listed, but it cannot promise removal of ads delivered from the same infrastructure as the requested video or inserted by the app itself. Keep the DNS filter for broad domain-level protection, but do not treat it as a guaranteed way to remove every YouTube ad.

Privacy and security limits

DNS-over-TLS protects the path between an Android device and a compatible resolver from ordinary network observers reading the DNS packets in transit. It does not hide the destination from the websites or apps you connect to, encrypt traffic that is not already protected by its own protocol, or make your identity anonymous. The DNS provider receives the queries needed to answer them, so read that provider’s current privacy and logging policy instead of assuming that encrypted transport means no logs.

An iPhone configuration profile changes DNS resolution; it is not automatically a full-device VPN. A provider app may use a local VPN interface to enforce DNS or add other controls, but its behavior and permissions must be checked in the app’s description and iOS settings. Do not install multiple unknown profiles simply because each claims to block more domains.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quick recovery checklist

  • Android: set Private DNS to Automatic to return to the network resolver.
  • iPhone: remove the DNS profile under Settings → General → VPN & Device Management.
  • Disable competing VPN, security, or parental-control services while diagnosing.
  • Try another network to separate a provider problem from a captive portal or firewall problem.
  • Re-enter the hostname exactly, without spaces or a URL prefix.
  • If only one site or app fails, use a narrow allowlist rule rather than abandoning filtering everywhere.

Bottom line

Android offers the cleanest system-wide setup: choose Private DNS provider hostname and enter the filtering provider’s published DoT hostname, such as dns.adguard-dns.com. iPhone normally requires an installed DNS profile or provider app. In both cases, DNS filtering is a domain-level control: it can reduce many third-party ads, trackers, and malicious requests, but it cannot guarantee removal of first-party or same-hostname advertising. Keep the disable path available, review profile and privacy details, and use allowlists carefully when a legitimate service is blocked.
