The most effective setup uses five layers on every account: reduce who can see your posts and profile, limit who can contact or interact with you, filter comments and messages, use mute/restrict/block tools for individual accounts, and report conduct that violates platform rules. Work through those layers on each service because similarly named controls do not behave the same way. Settings can differ by app version, region, age and account type, so use the labels displayed in your account.
A five-layer privacy setup
- Review visibility. Check the account default and the audience selector on every new post, video, story or live stream. Decide whether the material should be public, limited to approved followers or friends, or private.
- Limit contact. Choose who may follow you, send direct messages, comment, tag you in photos, or mention your username.
- Turn on moderation. Use word filters, comment review, hidden terms and link controls. Treat these as screening tools, not guarantees that every abusive post will be caught.
- Choose an intervention. Mute is the quietest option; restrict reduces interaction without necessarily alerting the other person; block cuts off more access; report sends a suspected violation to the service for review.
- Review after changes. Test the account from a different profile or ask a trusted person what they can see. Recheck after major app updates because labels and eligibility can change.
No setting can reliably prevent screenshots, copying, downloads, off-platform sharing or every form of contact. A post made by someone else is generally governed by that poster’s audience choice, even when you control whether it appears on your profile.

How the controls differ

Use the visibility choice first, then set interaction rules. A private account with open comments and unrestricted message requests can still feel unsafe; a public account with tightly limited interaction is more discoverable but may reduce harassment opportunities.
Facebook and Instagram (Meta)
Set the audience before publishing
On Facebook, open the audience selector beside a post and choose a specific audience such as Public, Friends or a custom list. In Menu > Settings & privacy > Settings, review Audience and visibility and Followers and public content. Check older posts as well as future-post defaults. Instagram accounts can be switched to private from Profile > menu > Settings and activity > Account privacy. A private Instagram account requires you to approve new followers; existing followers remain until you remove them.

Stories, reels, live videos and individual Facebook posts may have their own audience controls. Do not assume that changing a default retroactively changes material already published.
Control comments and hidden words
Instagram’s Comments and Hidden Words areas let you limit who can comment and hide comments or message requests containing selected words and phrases. Facebook provides comment-audience choices and tools to hide comments by words. Add likely misspellings, slurs, threats and identifying information that you do not want repeated. Filters can miss coded language and can also catch harmless words, so check filtered items when the service offers a review queue.
Review tags and timeline posts
In Facebook’s Profile and tagging controls, enable review of posts that tag you and tags people add to your posts before they appear on your profile. Instagram’s Tags and mentions controls can limit who may tag or mention you and can require approval. Removing a tag hides the association from your profile; it does not necessarily delete the original post from another person’s profile.

Instagram’s Restrict option is designed for lower-visibility intervention. Meta says: “On Instagram, if you restrict someone, they won’t be able to see when you’re online or if you’ve read their messages. Their new comments on your posts will only be visible to them.” You can choose to review a restricted person’s comment before others see it. Restrict is useful when you want to reduce contact without the obvious signal of a block. Mute stops an account’s posts or stories appearing in your feed while leaving the connection in place. Blocking removes the account’s ability to interact through the blocked account, although related accounts and public material can create additional exposure.

Report persistent abuse
Use the report option on the specific post, comment, message or profile. Preserve evidence first if you may need it: save dates, usernames and screenshots without redistributing abusive material. Reporting makes the service assess the content under its policies; it does not guarantee removal, a particular enforcement decision or a response time.
TikTok
Choose who can watch each type of post
Go to Profile > Menu > Settings and privacy > Privacy. Set the account and individual-post visibility to the available choices: Everyone, Friends or followers, or Only you/private, depending on the account and feature. Review older videos individually when necessary. TikTok warns that, depending on selected privacy settings, posts may be visible to anyone on or off the platform and may be shared by anyone on or off TikTok, whether or not that person has a TikTok account. Therefore, a restricted in-app audience is not the same as control over copies or links outside TikTok.
Limit comments and filter terms
In Privacy > Comments, choose who can comment, turn comments off where appropriate, and enable filtering of unwanted comments or selected keywords. A video can have a narrower comment setting than the account default, so inspect the privacy panel before posting sensitive material. Review filtered comments when you want to distinguish abuse from a false positive.

Control direct messages and mentions
Use the privacy controls for direct messages to decide who may send requests or messages. TikTok applies age-related restrictions, so some accounts will not see every option. Also review mention and tag settings and disable them for audiences you do not know. If an unwanted account continues contact, block it from its profile and report the message or account that violates the rules.

Protect posts and control photo tags
Open your profile menu and go to Settings and privacy > Privacy and safety. Turning on Protect your posts limits posts to approved followers. Review the control for who can tag you in photos; setting it to people you follow or disabling tagging reduces unwanted profile associations. Existing posts and replies may need separate review.
Use mute and blocked-word filters
Mute removes an account’s posts from your timeline without notifying that account. Under Muted words, add words, phrases, usernames, emojis or hashtags. Set the duration and whether the filter applies to the home timeline, notifications or both when those options are shown. Muting is useful for dogpiling or recurring topics when you do not want to block every participant.
Blocking prevents the blocked account from engaging with you through the blocked account. X notes an important limitation: if your account is not protected, a blocked account can still see your posts, although it cannot engage with them. Protect your posts as well if preventing that account from viewing your posts is the objective.
Report the item, not only the person
Report the individual post, direct message or profile that demonstrates harassment, threats, impersonation or another policy violation. Include context when the form permits it. A report is a request for platform review, not a promise of removal or a fixed response time.

YouTube
Set channel-wide moderation
In YouTube Studio, open Settings > Community (the exact label may vary) and configure blocked words, link controls and default comment review. Comments containing blocked words or links can be held rather than published. Channel owners can also choose to hold potentially inappropriate comments for review. These settings apply across the channel unless a video has its own override.
Adjust an individual video’s comments
For a video, open its details or content settings and choose whether comments are on, off or held for review. Eligible videos may restrict commenting to subscribers and paid members; eligibility and available durations are determined by YouTube. Disabling comments is the strongest immediate way to stop new public replies on that video, but it also removes constructive discussion.
Hide a commenter
From a comment’s menu, choose the option to hide the user from the channel. Hidden users’ comments and live-chat activity are hidden from the channel audience, and YouTube says the person is not notified. This is different from deleting one comment: future activity from that user is also hidden on the channel.

Held comments remain in YouTube Studio for up to 60 days, according to YouTube Help. Approve legitimate comments, remove abuse and report policy violations before the retention period expires. If a threat appears credible or involves immediate danger, preserve evidence and contact appropriate local emergency or legal services rather than relying only on a platform report.
A practical response ladder
When you want less exposure, not confrontation
Start with audience reduction, then mute the account or topic. This keeps useful connections while removing content from your daily view. It does not stop the person from contacting you through another route or viewing public posts.
When contact is unwanted but not clearly a policy violation
Restrict the person where the service offers it, limit message requests, turn on comment approval and remove tags. This creates a review step without necessarily notifying the account. Tell trusted friends not to amplify the exchange by quoting or resharing it.
When harassment continues
Block the account, tighten the account audience and save evidence before deleting messages or comments. Check for alternate accounts, group mentions and public posts that still expose your name. Blocking one account does not automatically remove copies or stop a different account from posting about you.

Report the exact content and profile using the service’s abuse or safety workflow. Include dates, URLs or post identifiers when the form accepts them. Platform enforcement is discretionary and may take time; do not promise yourself or others a particular result.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Changing only the account default: older posts, stories, videos and live streams may retain their previous audiences. Audit them individually.
- Assuming private means uncopyable: approved viewers can still screenshot, record or reshare material. Avoid posting sensitive information when a copy would create harm.
- Confusing tag review with deletion: removing your tag changes your profile association, not necessarily the original post.
- Treating filters as perfect: abusive users vary spelling and use images or coded language. Combine filters with review, blocking and reporting.
- Expecting identical behavior: Restrict, mute, block and hidden-comment tools have platform-specific effects. Read the explanation shown beside the control before applying it.
- Leaving message requests unchecked: review filtered and pending requests periodically, and disable requests from categories you never need.
- Responding publicly to every abuser: replies can increase visibility and attract pile-ons. Capture evidence, use the appropriate control and involve trusted people when needed.
- Forgetting account recovery: use a unique password, current recovery email or phone, and multi-factor authentication so an abusive person cannot take over the account and change the controls.
Privacy checkup checklist
- Account visibility is set deliberately, not left at the service’s broadest default.
- Every post, story, video and live stream uses the intended audience.
- Follower or friend requests require approval where possible.
- Comment audiences, keyword filters and review queues are enabled appropriately.
- Direct-message requests from unknown people are limited or filtered.
- Tagging and mentions require approval or are limited to trusted accounts.
- Mute, restrict and block options are understood for each service you use.
- Evidence is preserved before deleting threatening or abusive material.
- Reporting is used for policy violations, with no assumption that it guarantees enforcement.
- Recovery details, password and multi-factor authentication are current.
What a good setup can and cannot do
These controls reduce unwanted exposure and give you graduated responses, from quietly removing content from view to cutting off an account and reporting it. They cannot guarantee that harassment disappears, that a platform responds within a particular period, or that content posted by someone else is removed. Recheck settings after updates and whenever your audience, age eligibility or account type changes. The safest approach is layered: narrow the audience, reduce interaction opportunities, moderate what gets through, intervene on individual accounts and escalate genuine violations.
