To implement it, configure wal_level to replica or higher, turn on archive_mode, send completed WAL files to durable storage with archive_command or archive_library, take a base backup, and verify that a restore can retrieve and replay the archive. During recovery, PostgreSQL can stop at a timestamp, named restore point, log sequence number (LSN), transaction ID, or another supported target.

What PostgreSQL PITR actually protects
PostgreSQL writes changes to write-ahead log files before those changes are considered durable in the data files. Continuous archiving copies each completed WAL segment out of the live server. A base backup supplies a consistent starting copy of the data directory; the archived WAL supplies the changes made after that backup.

Recovery restores the base backup, fetches WAL segments through restore_command, and replays them in order. You can let replay continue to the newest archived segment or stop at a specific recovery target. This is why PITR can recover to just before an accidental DROP TABLE, a bad deployment, or another known event instead of restoring only to the time of the last full backup.
PITR is not the same as a logical dump. pg_dump exports database objects and rows at one point; it does not provide the continuous WAL sequence required to roll a base backup forward through every subsequent change. Keep logical dumps for portability or object-level recovery, but do not treat them as a PITR system.

Plan the archive before changing PostgreSQL
Choose storage and retention
Put the archive on storage that survives loss of the primary server. A separate disk or host is better than a directory on the same volume, and an off-site or otherwise independent copy protects against a host, rack, or site failure. PostgreSQL does not prescribe a particular storage product: the archive mechanism may be a simple copy, a script, or a library integrated with backup software.
Decide how long you will retain WAL before enabling the feature. The retention window must cover the oldest base backup you may restore plus every WAL segment needed to reach the latest recovery point. Deleting a segment too early creates a gap that makes a later restore impossible. Keep a written relationship between each base backup and the archive range that follows it.

- Recovery point objective: how much data loss is acceptable if the newest archived WAL is behind the failure.
- Recovery time objective: how quickly the base backup can be copied, how fast the archive can be read, and how long WAL replay takes.
- Restore target: whether operators will normally select a timestamp, a named restore point, an LSN, a transaction ID, or the end of the available archive.
- Timeline handling: whether a restore may branch into a new timeline after recovery and promotion.
Check permissions and capacity
The PostgreSQL server account must be able to read the source WAL path and write to the archive destination. The archive destination must have enough free space for the planned retention period, including periods when uploads are delayed. Encryption, transport credentials, and access controls belong in the script or archive library rather than in a world-readable configuration file.
Enable continuous WAL archiving
Set the required parameters
In postgresql.conf, configure the minimum settings required by the PostgreSQL documentation:
wal_level = replica
archive_mode = on
archive_command = 'test ! -f /mnt/server/archivedir/%f && cp %p /mnt/server/archivedir/%f'
wal_level must be replica or higher. archive_mode must be on; it cannot be enabled while wal_level is minimal. archive_mode is a server-start setting, so changing it requires a PostgreSQL restart rather than only a reload. Use archive_library instead of archive_command when your deployment supplies an archive library; configure one archiving method, not two competing methods.
The example destination is illustrative. Replace it with a path or transport appropriate for your operating system, permissions, encryption policy, and retention design. On Windows, the official documentation shows a copy-based command; quote paths carefully when they contain spaces.

Understand %p and %f
PostgreSQL substitutes %p with the path of the WAL file that must be archived and %f with that file’s WAL filename. The command must transfer the complete file without changing its contents. A destination filename based on %f makes the archive layout predictable and allows restore scripts to request the same name.

The test ! -f guard in the Unix example prevents an existing file from being overwritten. That protects against accidental replacement, but it also means a pre-existing file must be verified as identical before an upload is considered successful. If your transport writes to temporary files, upload the temporary object first and atomically rename it only after the transfer and integrity checks complete.
Use a script when archiving needs more than one operation
A simple local copy can fit in archive_command. Use a separately reviewed script when you need compression, encryption, remote transport, retries, logging, temporary files, or multiple destinations. The command must return success only after the WAL segment is safely stored. Returning success before the remote write is durable tells PostgreSQL it may recycle the local segment, potentially creating an unrecoverable gap.
Keep the script’s executable path, environment, credentials, and error output documented. Test it as the PostgreSQL service account, not only as an administrator. Avoid commands that silently discard errors or treat a partial upload as complete.
Restart, validate, and watch the primary
- Save the configuration change and restart PostgreSQL because
archive_modeis a server-start setting. - Confirm the running values with your normal SQL administration method, for example by checking
wal_level,archive_mode, andarchive_commandin the active server configuration. - Generate ordinary write activity so WAL segments are completed. Archiving operates on completed segments, so a quiet server may not immediately produce a new archive file.
- Check the archive destination for a correctly named WAL file and inspect PostgreSQL logs for archive failures.
- Record the time and identity of the first successful archived segment; that provides an operational starting point for later restore investigations.
Do not judge success solely by the presence of a directory. A directory can contain old files while the current archive command is failing. Monitor both the age of the newest archived WAL and the amount of WAL waiting locally.
Take and catalog the base backup
PITR requires a valid base backup plus a continuous WAL sequence extending from that backup onward. Use a physical base-backup method supported by your PostgreSQL version and operations tooling. A commonly used command-line approach is pg_basebackup; run it with a destination that is separate from the live data directory and protect the resulting files like production data.
After the backup finishes, record:
- the PostgreSQL major version and server identity;
- the backup start and completion times;
- the backup label or identifier produced by the backup method;
- the archive location and the first and last WAL files known to cover the backup;
- the checksum, size, and storage location of the backup;
- the retention date after which the backup and its dependent WAL may be deleted.
Never delete WAL merely because a newer base backup exists unless your retention policy proves that no supported restore still depends on it. Keep the base backup and its required WAL together in the catalog used by the people who will perform a recovery.
Prepare a restore server
Build an isolated target
Restore into a stopped, empty PostgreSQL data directory on a server with the same major version as the backup unless your documented migration procedure explicitly supports another arrangement. Keep the target isolated from applications until validation is complete; otherwise clients may connect to an intermediate state or write data you did not intend to preserve.

Copy or unpack the selected base backup into the target data directory, preserving ownership, permissions, symbolic links, and file layout. Configuration files are a separate concern: a base-backup process may include files in the data directory, but manually maintained host configuration and access-control files still need an intentional backup and review.
Provide restore_command
On the restore cluster, set a command that retrieves a requested WAL filename and writes it to PostgreSQL’s requested destination path. The official Unix example is:
restore_command = 'cp /mnt/server/archivedir/%f %p'
Here, %f is the filename PostgreSQL requests and %p is the path where PostgreSQL expects the file. Adapt the command for remote storage, decryption, authentication, retries, and temporary-file handling. It must return a failure status when the requested file is unavailable; otherwise PostgreSQL may interpret a missing segment as a successful restore.
Make sure the restore account can read the archive and write the target path. Test the command manually with a known WAL filename before starting recovery, then test a filename that does not exist to confirm that the command fails cleanly.
Signal recovery on the PostgreSQL version you run
Recovery-target configuration is version-sensitive. On PostgreSQL 12 and later, a physical restore normally uses a recovery.signal file in the data directory together with recovery settings in the server configuration. Older major versions use different recovery trigger conventions. Follow the conventions of the exact major version that created and will open the backup; do not copy a recovery procedure between versions without checking those differences.
Stop replay at the required point
Set one recovery target for the restore. The target tells PostgreSQL when to stop replaying archived WAL rather than replaying through the end of the available sequence.
Timestamp target
recovery_target_time = '2026-10-15 14:30:00+00'
Use a timestamp with an explicit time zone and document whether the chosen moment is immediately before or after the event you are correcting. A timestamp is only useful when the server, application, and incident records use a known time base.

Named restore point
recovery_target_name = 'before-release-2026-10-15'
A named restore point is created in advance of a risky operation and gives the recovery team an unambiguous marker. It is especially useful for planned migrations or deployments where the operator can record the name before making changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLSN or transaction target
An LSN identifies a precise position in WAL, while a transaction-ID target can stop around a known transaction. Use these when incident tooling or database logs provide the corresponding identifier. They require accurate identification of the transaction or LSN and should not be guessed from wall-clock time.
Timeline target
When a database has already been recovered and promoted, later WAL may exist on a different timeline. Select the appropriate target timeline when the archive contains multiple recovery branches. Keep timeline history files with the archive so the restore server can follow the intended branch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Run the recovery and validate before promotion
- Stop the target PostgreSQL instance and verify that the data directory contains the selected base backup, the recovery signal required by your version,
restore_command, and exactly one intended recovery target. - Start PostgreSQL and watch the server log. You should see requests for archived WAL and messages showing replay progress. A missing or corrupt segment will halt recovery.
- Wait until PostgreSQL reports that the recovery target has been reached. Do not promote merely because the server process is running.
- Connect with administrative access and validate the expected schema, rows, roles, extensions, sequences, and application-visible state. Check that the event you meant to exclude is absent and that required changes immediately before the target are present.
- Keep the restored instance read-only or isolated while validation and forensic checks continue.
- Promote only after the target state is accepted. Promotion creates a writable recovery branch; preserve the original archive and timeline metadata so the operation remains auditable.
If the target is not reached, inspect the log for the first missing WAL filename, a failed command exit status, permission errors, timeline mismatch, or an incorrect target setting. Fix the underlying issue and restart recovery from a clean copy rather than modifying a partially replayed data directory.
Monitor for the failures that make PITR unusable
Archive command failures
A failing archive command causes PostgreSQL to retain WAL locally while it retries. That can fill the WAL directory or the filesystem containing it. Alert on archive failures, the age of the newest successfully archived segment, local WAL growth, and free space. Capacity monitoring is part of the recovery design, not an optional operational enhancement.
Silent or partial uploads
Network interruptions can leave a remote object truncated even when a destination name exists. Use temporary names, verify completion, and make the final object visible only after the transfer succeeds. A restore test should deliberately fetch archived files through the same path used in production.
Retention gaps
Deleting one segment in the middle of the sequence is enough to break replay beyond that point. Coordinate lifecycle deletion with the base-backup catalog, and retain timeline history files. If a required segment has already been deleted, PITR cannot reconstruct changes that depended on it; restore only to the newest point covered by an intact sequence.
Best Value
Wrong target or clock interpretation
A timestamp target can be wrong because of time-zone conversion, clock drift, or an ambiguous incident time. Prefer a named restore point or LSN when the event was marked in advance, and always validate the resulting data before promotion.
Configuration drift
Recovery may fail or produce an unsafe server when the restore target’s settings, extensions, authentication rules, or operating-system dependencies differ from production. Record the runtime environment with each backup and rehearse restores on representative infrastructure.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Back up PostgreSQL configuration separately
WAL archiving protects database changes, not every file an administrator edits. A PITR restore does not automatically recreate the intended versions of postgresql.conf, pg_hba.conf, or pg_ident.conf. Protect these files separately, along with service definitions, extension packages, certificates, encryption keys, scripts, and any external configuration used by the archive and restore commands.
Store configuration backups under access controls appropriate for the credentials they contain. Keep a versioned record of which configuration revision was active when each base backup was taken, and review authentication rules before exposing a restored server to clients.
Compare archive implementations by recovery behavior
| Decision area | Local copy command | Script or archive library with remote storage |
|---|---|---|
| Archive durability | Depends on the local destination and its failure domain. | Can provide independent or off-site copies when transport and storage are designed correctly. |
| Recovery-point granularity | Bounded by how quickly completed WAL segments are copied and retained. | Can achieve the same WAL granularity, but adds transport latency that must be monitored. |
| Retention and deletion safety | Simple directory rules are easy to misuse without a backup catalog. | Lifecycle policies can be centralized, but must understand base-backup dependencies and timelines. |
| Monitoring and alerting | Requires log collection, archive-age checks, and filesystem alerts. | Also requires remote-upload, credential, quota, and object-integrity alerts. |
| Restore speed | Usually limited by local disk throughput and WAL replay. | Includes remote download and possible decompression or decryption time. |
| Operational complexity | Lowest for a reliable local path with adequate capacity. | Higher because scripts, credentials, retries, encryption, and service dependencies must be maintained. |
| Major-version compatibility | Verify command syntax and recovery settings against the PostgreSQL major version in use. | Verify both the PostgreSQL interface and the backup or archive software’s supported versions. |
Test the complete disaster-recovery path
A configuration change is not proof of recoverability. Schedule a restore exercise that uses a real base backup and archived WAL, but performs the work on an isolated target. Measure the time to provision the target, retrieve the archive, reach a selected timestamp, validate application data, and make the restored service available.
Include at least one test of each operational branch:
