To use Plex on an Onn Google TV box, complete the box’s Google TV setup, install the official Plex app from Google Play, and link it with the code shown on the television at plex.tv/link. The box is a Plex player, not normally the place where a personal Plex library runs. For your own video or music files, run Plex Media Server on a separate computer, compatible NAS, or NVIDIA SHIELD, then use the Onn app to stream from it. Plex’s hosted online content can be used without creating a personal server.

What you need before installing Plex

The Onn device acts as the playback client. It displays Plex menus and decodes or streams content, while a Plex Media Server catalogs personal files and delivers them to the player. Plex documents its regular Android application as supported on official Android TV and Google TV devices through Google Play. That is platform-level support; it is not a model-by-model certification of every Onn generation. App availability and menu wording can vary with the box model, Google TV software version, and region.

You need an Onn Google TV streaming box, a television with an available HDMI input, its power connection, a Wi-Fi or wired home network, and a Google account for the initial Google TV setup. You also need a Plex account to sign in. If you intend to watch files you own, have a separate computer, compatible NAS, or NVIDIA SHIELD available to run Plex Media Server, with the media stored on that device or on storage it can access.

The only model-specific hardware instructions covered here come from the onn ORPK4VTG 4K Pro Streaming Device User Guide. That guide lists an HDMI cable and power adapter in the package and describes its own port layout and setup screens. Other Onn models may include different accessories, ports, or prompts, so check the guide for your exact model before buying a cable or assuming that a screen will look identical.

Keep the server and the Onn box on the same local network when you want to watch a personal library at home. Plex says some app functions still require an internet connection, even when both devices are in the same house.

Finish the Onn and Google TV setup

  1. Connect the hardware. On the ORPK4VTG 4K Pro, connect the supplied HDMI lead to the box and an open HDMI port on the television, connect power, and turn on the TV. Select the television’s HDMI input that matches the port you used. If you have another Onn model, follow its supplied connection diagram instead of assuming the 4K Pro’s arrangement.
  2. Pair the remote. Follow the on-screen pairing prompt if one appears. Keep the remote close to the box while it searches. A remote that has not paired cannot reliably complete the remaining setup screens.
  3. Choose language and region. Google TV asks for regional and language settings during first boot. Select the options you actually use; they influence menus, content availability, and sometimes the apps shown in the Play Store.
  4. Connect to your network. Select your home Wi-Fi network and enter its password, or use a wired connection if your model and home equipment support one. A stable connection matters more for a Plex server than for browsing, because video playback can continuously consume bandwidth.
  5. Sign in to Google. Complete the Google account prompts and accept the setup choices you want. Google TV cannot install Plex from Google Play until its initial account and network setup has finished.

Google’s current help center groups app installation under its Google TV instructions at Install apps on Google TV. The exact wording of the first-run screens can change with software updates, but the sequence above establishes the prerequisites for the Play Store.

Install the Plex app from Google Play

  1. From the Google TV home screen, open Google Play Store.
  2. Choose the search function and enter Plex. Select the official Plex app in the results, not an unrelated media player with a similar name.
  3. Choose Install and wait for Google TV to finish downloading and installing the app.
  4. Select Open, or launch Plex later from the Apps row.

Plex lists official Android TV and Google TV devices as a supported place to run its regular Android app; see Which Smart TV models are supported? If Plex does not appear in search, confirm that the box is connected to the internet, the Google account is active, and the device software is current. Availability can depend on the model, installed software, and country or region. Do not sideload an unverified package merely because the Play Store listing is unavailable.

Link the television app to your Plex account

When Plex opens for the first time, choose Sign In. Big-screen Plex applications generally present a four-character code. Use a phone or computer for the account-linking step so you do not have to type an email address and password with the remote.

  1. Leave the code visible on the television.
  2. On the phone or computer, open https://plex.tv/link.
  3. Sign in to the Plex account you want to use on the Onn box.
  4. Enter the four-character code shown by the TV app and submit it.
  5. Wait several seconds. The Plex app should refresh and display the account’s home screen.

Plex describes this process in Connect a Player App to Your Plex Account, last modified July 7, 2025. Linking associates the player with the signed-in account so it can find servers that account owns or has permission to use. If the code expires, return to the sign-in screen and generate a new one rather than reusing the old code.

Decide what you want to watch

The setup differs depending on whether you want Plex’s own online catalog or a library of files stored by you. Plex explains the distinction between its player and server in What is Plex?

  • Memory storage capacity: 8 GB
Goal What runs on the Onn box What else is required Availability condition
Plex-hosted Movies & Shows or other online content The Plex player app A Plex account and internet-connected app The service and titles available to your account and region
Your personal movies, television recordings, music, or photos The Plex player app Plex Media Server on a computer, compatible NAS, or NVIDIA SHIELD, plus organized media folders The server must be running and reachable when you play an item
A library shared by another person The Plex player app The owner must share the library with the Plex account you linked The owner’s server and sharing permissions must be active

You do not install Plex Media Server on the Onn box as part of this standard setup. The documented personal-library workflow places the server on a computer, supported NAS, or NVIDIA SHIELD. Select the server host based on where your files already live and whether that device can stay powered and connected whenever you want to watch.

Set up a personal library on a separate server

Choose a host that fits your files

A computer is practical when your videos are already on an internal drive or an attached USB drive and the computer can remain awake during viewing. A compatible NAS is useful when the library is stored on network storage and the NAS supports the Plex Media Server package. NVIDIA SHIELD is another documented host option. The available evidence does not establish a performance ranking among these choices, so prioritize storage location, operating-system support, and dependable availability instead of assuming one category is universally faster.

Install and sign in to Plex Media Server

Install Plex Media Server on the chosen computer, NAS, or NVIDIA SHIELD by following Plex’s current installer instructions for that platform. Sign in to the same Plex account that you linked to the Onn app. The server should appear under that account once its initial setup is complete. If you use a different account, the Onn player may not see the libraries unless the server owner explicitly shares them with your player account.

  • Stay connected with blazingfast WiFi 6 (2.4/5GHz 802.11ax) or a USBC hub with Ethernet port connection

Add libraries and point them at the correct folders

  1. Open the Plex Media Server web setup interface on the server device.
  2. Create a library of the appropriate type, such as Movies, TV Shows, Music, or another category offered by the server.
  3. Browse to the folders that actually contain the media. Grant Plex permission to read those folders if the operating system asks.
  4. Save the library and let the server scan the files. File naming and folder organization affect the metadata Plex can match, so correct an incorrectly identified item from the server’s library controls.
  5. Keep the server application running while you test playback on the Onn box.

The Onn player does not copy the files into its own storage. It requests them from the server over the network, so shutting down the computer, disconnecting the NAS, or putting the server to sleep makes the library unavailable even though the Plex app remains installed on the television.

Make the local network reliable

For in-home playback, connect the Onn box and the personal-media server to the same home network. They do not necessarily need to use the same connection type: one can be wired and the other wireless, provided the router places them on a network where they can communicate. Guest networks and client-isolation settings can prevent that communication even when both devices show the same Wi-Fi name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plex’s guidance in Internet and Network Requirements says wired networking is generally faster and more reliable, with particular benefit for the server. Recent Wi-Fi can also perform well. If playback pauses or quality drops, wiring the server to the router is a sensible first change because it removes one variable from the media source.

To watch your personal library away from home, the server owner must enable and successfully verify Plex Remote Access. The local same-network arrangement alone does not provide remote streaming. Plex’s step-by-step guidance, including local playback and remote-access setup, is available at Quick-Start & Step by Step Guides for Plex Media Server.

Test playback on the Onn box

  1. Open Plex and confirm that the account name is the one you intended to link.
  2. Browse to the server or shared library you want to use.
  3. Choose a known-good, relatively short video or music file for the first test.
  4. Start playback and check that picture, sound, subtitles, and seeking work.
  5. Try a second item only after the first one plays, so you can distinguish a library-wide problem from a single-file or format issue.

If you are using Plex-hosted content rather than a personal server, select an available title from the app’s online sections and test it in the same way. Follow any current activation or subscription prompt shown by Plex for the account and device; the available official material does not establish one universal activation charge for every Onn and account combination.

Troubleshoot the problems that occur most often

Plex is missing from Google Play

  • Confirm the box completed Google TV setup and is online.
  • Check for system updates, restart the box, and search for “Plex” again.
  • Verify the device model and region. Plex’s Android TV/Google TV support is a platform statement, and app visibility can still vary by model, software release, or country.
  • Do not infer that a missing listing means every Onn model is unsupported; compare the installed Google TV version with the current Plex support information.

The four-character code does not work

  • Open plex.tv/link in a separate browser session and sign in to the intended account before entering the code.
  • Check each character carefully. If the code has expired, generate a new code in the TV app.
  • Make sure the Onn box has internet access. Linking requires the TV app and the browser session to reach Plex’s service.
  • After submission, wait briefly for the app to refresh. If it remains on the code screen, close and reopen Plex and repeat the linking process.

The app opens, but no personal library appears

  • Verify that Plex Media Server is running rather than merely installed.
  • Confirm the server and Onn box are on the same local network for home playback.
  • Check that both the server and player use the same Plex account, or that the server owner has shared the library with the linked account.
  • Open the server’s dashboard and confirm that the library scan found the folders and files you expected.
  • Restart the server application and Plex on the Onn box after correcting an account, network, or folder-permission problem.

Playback buffers or stops

  • Test the network connection on the Onn box and server. A weak wireless signal, congested channel, or isolated guest network can interrupt a stream.
  • If possible, connect the server to the router with Ethernet; Plex identifies wired networking as generally more reliable.
  • Try another file. If only one item fails, the issue may be that file or its required conversion rather than the entire network.
  • For remote viewing, confirm that Remote Access is enabled and reported as working on the server. A local connection that works at home does not prove remote access is configured.

The server disappears after working once

  • Check whether the host computer went to sleep, the NAS stopped its Plex service, or the SHIELD was powered down.
  • Ensure the server has a stable network address or router reservation if its address changes frequently.
  • Confirm that the Plex account on the server has not been signed out and that the media drive is still mounted.

Model, software, and account cautions

The ORPK4VTG 4K Pro guide is evidence for that model’s included HDMI cable, power adapter, remote-pairing flow, and initial Google TV screens only. Treat those details as a reference for the 4K Pro, not a promise that every Onn box has identical hardware. Identify your model before troubleshooting a missing port, replacing accessories, or following a screen-by-screen instruction.

Plex and Google TV update their applications and menus. A label may move while the underlying sequence remains: finish Google TV setup, install Plex through Google Play, sign in, and link the account. Use the current prompts shown on your device rather than forcing an old menu path.

Some Plex functions require internet access even when the server and player are in the same home. Account linking also helps Plex securely associate the player with owned or shared servers. For current platform, account, and network details, consult Plex’s support pages linked in this guide rather than relying on an old setup video.
