To connect a Samsung Android phone, turn on Bluetooth on both devices, open the Chromebook’s Phone control beside the clock, choose Get started, accept the prompts, and finish the setup under Settings → Connected devices. Google’s Phone Hub requirement is ChromeOS M89 or later and Android 5.1 or later. Samsung phones use Google’s general Android setup flow; Google does not certify every Samsung model or One UI version.
The connection lets you check phone status, use selected remote commands, see notifications, browse Chrome tabs, retrieve recent photos and screenshots, and use app streaming only on devices Google lists as supported. Samsung is not on that published streaming list, so plan on the other Phone Hub features rather than guaranteed app streaming.

What Phone Hub does
Phone Hub is built into ChromeOS. After pairing, controls for your phone appear in the Chromebook’s system area and in Settings → Connected devices. Google describes it as a way to use selected phone features from the Chromebook screen, rather than as a complete mirror of the phone. It does not turn the Chromebook into a full copy of the Samsung interface.

| App streaming | Stream selected phone apps only when the phone model, Android version, network and permissions meet Google’s additional requirements. |
Google says the non-streaming Phone Hub features can still be used when the Chromebook is offline. App streaming is different: it has its own network and device requirements, explained below. A feature being listed in Phone Hub also does not guarantee that every Samsung software build exposes it in exactly the same way.

Compatibility requirements for a Samsung phone
Google’s dedicated Phone Hub instructions state these minimums:
| Device or setting | Requirement | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Chromebook | ChromeOS M89 or later | Earlier ChromeOS releases do not meet the stated Phone Hub minimum. |
| Samsung phone | Android 5.1 or later | This is Google’s minimum for the Phone Hub Android-phone flow. |
| Bluetooth | On for both devices before setup | The initial connection and pairing depend on Bluetooth. |
| Google account | Required by Google’s broader connected-phone workflow | The separate Android-phone connection guide says both devices should use the same Google Account for that general workflow. |
These are Android-generic requirements. Google’s Phone Hub page does not give Samsung-specific menu names or verify every Galaxy model, carrier variant, Android release, or One UI version. A Samsung phone that meets the Android and Bluetooth requirements can follow the Android instructions, but an individual model may still expose different prompts or be restricted by its software. If your phone is on a managed corporate build, the organization’s policies can also affect available features.
Do not combine the minimums for the dedicated Phone Hub page with every requirement in Google’s broader connected-phone article. Use the M89-and-Android-5.1 thresholds for the Phone Hub setup described here; use the same-account requirement when following the broader connected-phone route or troubleshooting that workflow.
The thresholds are minimums, not a promise that every optional control will appear. A newer ChromeOS or Android version can still present different labels, permissions or feature switches. If a prompt differs slightly from the wording below, follow the matching Android-phone or connected-device instruction rather than abandoning the setup.
Prepare both devices before pairing
- Install pending ChromeOS updates if the Chromebook is below M89. The version appears in ChromeOS settings under About ChromeOS.
- Confirm the Samsung phone runs Android 5.1 or newer.
- Turn on Bluetooth on the Chromebook from the status area beside the clock.
- Turn on Bluetooth in the Samsung phone’s quick settings or Bluetooth settings.
- Keep both devices close while the prompts are completed.
- If you are using the broader connected-phone setup, sign in to the same Google Account on both devices.
- If the Chromebook belongs to a school or employer, be prepared for some phone features to be disabled by administration.
Bluetooth is the first thing to check even if the phone has previously connected to the Chromebook for another purpose. A stale or incomplete pairing can interfere with the Phone Hub wizard, so removing the old pairing is an appropriate reset if setup repeatedly stops.
Wi-Fi is not listed as a prerequisite for the basic Phone Hub pairing. It becomes a specific requirement for app streaming, where both devices must use the same Wi-Fi network. Keeping the devices nearby during setup is sensible and is also required for streaming, but proximity alone cannot make streaming appear on an unsupported Samsung model.
No Samsung-only companion application is specified in Google’s Phone Hub setup. The Chromebook starts the pairing process, and the phone responds to the on-screen Android prompts. You should not need to buy a cable, adapter or new accessory for this documented setup.

Set up Phone Hub from the Chromebook’s Phone control
This is Google’s documented Phone Hub path. The labels can vary slightly with ChromeOS updates, but the sequence is the same.
- Enable Bluetooth. On the Chromebook, select the status area next to the clock and switch Bluetooth on. Make sure Bluetooth is also enabled on the Samsung phone.
- Open the Phone control. Select the Phone control at the bottom right, beside the time. If the Chromebook has never been connected to a phone, the panel offers a setup option.
- Start the wizard. Select Get started.
- Accept the connection prompt. When ChromeOS displays the terms or confirmation screen, select Accept and continue.
- Choose the Android-phone setup. In Connected devices, find Android phone and select Set up.
- Complete both-device prompts. Follow each instruction shown on the Chromebook and Samsung phone. You may be asked to confirm the device or grant access needed for the features you select.
- Finish. When the Chromebook reports that setup is complete, select Done.
Read each permission request rather than approving every option automatically. Phone Hub may offer separate controls for notifications, recent media or other functions. You can leave an optional feature off and enable it later from the connected-device settings.

After the final step, select the Phone control again to see the connection and available actions. The exact list can differ by ChromeOS version, Android version, permissions and administrator policy. Seeing the phone name and basic status confirms the connection even if an optional feature is absent.
Use the Settings route instead
If the Phone control is not visible, start in Chromebook settings. Google’s broader connection guide gives this route:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Chromebook Settings.
- Select Connected devices.
- Next to Android phone, select Set up.
- Confirm the Chromebook password when requested.
- Follow the prompts on the Chromebook and Samsung phone.
- Choose the features you want, then finish the setup.
This route is useful when you want to review the available feature switches during setup. Because it is the broader Android-phone workflow, verify that both devices are signed in to the same Google Account as described in Google’s connected-phone instructions. The account check is particularly important if the Chromebook has been reset, if more than one Google account is used, or if you are replacing a previously connected phone.
The Settings route and the Phone-control route lead to the same connected-device area. You do not need to complete both. If one route does not show the setup control, use the other after checking Bluetooth and the version requirements.
Change Phone Hub options after setup
To manage an existing connection, open Settings → Connected devices → [your phone]. The phone entry is identified by the device you paired. From there, use the Phone Hub switch or the individual feature switches to enable or disable functions. Changes take effect without repeating the complete pairing wizard.
Use this screen to distinguish a disabled feature from a failed connection. If the phone appears with status information but one control is missing, inspect the individual switches and any phone permission prompt first. A missing app-streaming control on Samsung is a compatibility issue, not evidence that the basic pairing failed.

What you can expect to work with Samsung
For a compatible Samsung phone, the safest expectation is the standard Phone Hub set: status information, commands, notifications, Chrome tabs and recent media. These functions are listed by Google for Phone Hub, but their availability can still be narrowed by Android permissions, ChromeOS version or an administrator.
| Capability | Samsung expectation | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Signal and battery | Available as a standard Phone Hub function | Requires a completed connection and an Android phone supported by the Chromebook. |
| Hotspot, silence and locate commands | Available where the corresponding phone control is exposed | The phone must be reachable and may need the relevant permission. |
| Phone Chrome tabs | Available as a listed Phone Hub function | Only tabs associated with the connected Android phone are shown. |
| Notifications | Available as a listed Phone Hub function | Notification access and organization policy can affect what appears. |
| Recent Gallery photos and screenshots | Available as a listed Phone Hub function | Phone Hub exposes recent items, not a promise of unrestricted access to the entire gallery. |
| App streaming | Not guaranteed for Samsung | Samsung is absent from Google’s published supported-device list. |
“Recent” media should be understood as the items Phone Hub exposes from the phone, not as a replacement for browsing the entire Samsung Gallery library. Likewise, notification controls depend on what the phone and ChromeOS are allowed to share. If a notification does not appear, check permissions and feature switches before repeating pairing.

Why app streaming is different
App streaming is not a general Android feature that every Phone Hub phone receives. Google’s published list names these supported groups:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Phone group named by Google | Requirement stated by Google |
|---|---|
| Google Pixel 4A or later | Android 13 or later |
| Nothing Phone (1) and Nothing Phone (2) | Included in Google’s listed streaming devices |
| Select Xiaomi phones | Android 13 or later; models listed are Xiaomi 12T, 12T Pro, 13 and 13 Pro |
| Samsung phones | Not included in the published list |
Because Samsung is not named, do not treat a successful Phone Hub pairing as evidence that app streaming will appear. A future Google or manufacturer update could change support, but the current documented list does not establish it. Installing a newer One UI release or Android version therefore cannot be presented as a guaranteed fix.
For phones that are supported, Google adds conditions beyond the basic Phone Hub connection:
- The Chromebook and phone must be on the same Wi-Fi network.
- The devices must be nearby.
- The phone must grant the permissions required for streaming.
- Some Wi-Fi networks may not work with the feature.
- Digital-rights management can prevent certain entertainment apps from streaming.
These conditions apply to streaming only. They do not cancel Google’s statement that other Phone Hub features can be used while the Chromebook is offline. A home or office network that blocks the streaming connection can therefore fail even when Bluetooth pairing and the other Phone Hub controls work normally.
Offline use versus internet-dependent features
Phone Hub’s offline statement is easy to misread. Google says the listed Phone Hub features can still be used when the Chromebook itself is offline. That does not mean every action is independent of the phone’s connection state, and it does not make app streaming available without a network.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use the distinction this way:
- Basic Phone Hub controls: may remain usable from an offline Chromebook after the devices are connected, subject to Bluetooth, phone availability and permissions.
- App streaming: requires the Chromebook and phone to share Wi-Fi, remain nearby and satisfy the streaming-device and permission requirements.
- Phone mobile data: a hotspot command can enable the phone’s hotspot, but using the Chromebook online still depends on the phone plan, signal and carrier settings.
Offline availability is not a promise that a powered-off, out-of-range or disconnected phone can respond. The phone still has to be available to provide status, commands, notifications or media. Treat “offline Chromebook” as a statement about the Chromebook’s internet connection, not a guarantee that the phone can be absent.
Troubleshoot a missing or failed connection
The Phone control or setup option is missing
- Confirm ChromeOS is M89 or later and the Samsung phone is on Android 5.1 or later.
- Open Settings → Connected devices and look for Android phone and Set up.
- Verify Bluetooth is on for both devices, not just on the Chromebook.
- If the Chromebook is managed by work or school, ask the administrator whether Phone Hub is restricted. Google specifically warns that managed Chromebooks may limit phone features.
The wizard cannot pair the devices
Google’s first recovery sequence is to remove any previous Bluetooth pairing from both devices, confirm Bluetooth is enabled on both, switch the phone’s Bluetooth off and back on, and restart the Chromebook. Then repeat the setup from the Phone control or Settings → Connected devices.
Do the reset on both sides: deleting only the Chromebook’s record can leave the Samsung phone holding an old pairing, while deleting only the phone’s record can leave ChromeOS trying to reuse stale information. Keep the devices close and complete every confirmation prompt before selecting Done.
The phone connects but features are unavailable
- Open Settings → Connected devices → [your phone] and check the Phone Hub and individual feature switches.
- Review any permission prompt on the Samsung phone and allow only the features you intend to use.
- For the broader connected-phone workflow, update Android and Google Play Services and verify the same Google Account is active on both devices.
- Remember that feature availability can differ by Android build, ChromeOS release and administrator policy.
If the basic status appears but notifications or recent media do not, treat that as a feature-permission issue first. If no phone entry appears at all, return to Bluetooth, account and version checks instead of troubleshooting an individual feature.

You replaced the phone
Disconnect the current phone first in the Chromebook’s connected-device settings. Before adding the replacement, enable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi as requested by Google’s broader connection guidance, sign in to the same Google Account if you are using that workflow, and run setup again. Leaving the old phone connected can make it unclear which device the Phone control is addressing.
Streaming is absent or fails
First check whether the phone is in Google’s published streaming list. A Samsung phone is not listed, so absence of the streaming control is expected under the documented compatibility information. For a listed phone, place both devices on the same Wi-Fi network, keep them nearby, verify required permissions and try a network that permits the feature. An entertainment app may still be blocked by digital-rights management.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the setup is complete
Select the Phone control beside the clock and confirm that the Samsung phone’s name, signal or battery status and available commands appear. Open Settings → Connected devices → [your phone] once to review the feature switches. If those controls are present, the Phone Hub connection is established; any missing optional capability should then be checked against its separate requirements rather than treated as a failed pairing.
For Samsung users, the practical boundary is straightforward: Phone Hub’s core connection follows Google’s Android instructions, while app streaming remains unsupported by the published device list. Keep Bluetooth enabled for pairing and use Google’s reset steps before attempting more complicated fixes.
Frequently asked questions
Does every Samsung Galaxy phone support Phone Hub?
Google gives Android-generic requirements rather than a Samsung model-by-model certification. A Samsung phone running Android 5.1 or later can follow the documented Android flow, but Google does not verify every Galaxy model, carrier variant or One UI release.
Do I need the same Google Account on both devices?
Google’s broader connected-phone guide says both devices should be signed in to the same Google Account. Use that requirement when following the Settings-based Android-phone workflow or diagnosing account-related connection problems.
Can Phone Hub work if my Chromebook is offline?
Google says the listed Phone Hub features can still be used when the Chromebook is offline. The phone must still be available and connected, and app streaming remains subject to its separate same-Wi-Fi, proximity, permission and supported-device requirements.
Why can’t I stream Samsung apps to my Chromebook?
Samsung is not included in Google’s published app-streaming device list. Pairing can still provide status, commands, notifications, Chrome tabs and recent media without making streaming available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs Wi-Fi required for the initial pairing?
The documented Phone Hub setup starts with Bluetooth on both devices. Google specifies same-network Wi-Fi for app streaming, not as the basic Bluetooth pairing step. The broader phone-connection guidance does ask you to enable Wi-Fi when changing phones.
Best Value
What should I do before connecting a replacement phone?
Disconnect the existing phone under Settings → Connected devices. Then enable Bluetooth, enable Wi-Fi as requested by the broader setup guidance, confirm the same Google Account if applicable, and run the setup again.
Can my school or employer block Phone Hub?
Yes. Google warns that work- or school-managed Chromebooks may restrict phone features. Contact the administrator if the setup option or individual controls are unavailable despite meeting the version and Bluetooth requirements.
Do I need to purchase a cable, adapter or companion app?
No purchase is specified for this setup. Google documents Phone Hub as a Chromebook feature using compatible devices and Bluetooth; no Samsung-only companion application, cable or adapter is required by the stated steps.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the minimum versions for Phone Hub?
Google lists ChromeOS M89 or later and Android 5.1 or later, with Bluetooth enabled on both devices.
Will Samsung app streaming work?
Do not count on it. Google’s published streaming list names Pixel 4A or later, Nothing Phone (1) and (2), and select Xiaomi models; Samsung is not listed.
Where can I manage the connection later?
Open Chromebook Settings → Connected devices → your paired phone. You can toggle Phone Hub or individual features there.
What is Google’s first fix when pairing fails?
Remove the previous Bluetooth pairing from both devices, verify Bluetooth is on, toggle Bluetooth off and on on the phone, restart the Chromebook, and repeat setup.
