Use Apple Family Sharing with Screen Time for a child’s iPhone, and Google Family Link or Android’s built-in Parental Controls for a child’s Android phone. These tools let you set daily social-media limits, create school and bedtime schedules, approve downloads, filter websites, and block individual apps. There is no universal number of “safe” social-media minutes: choose a limit that fits your child’s age, sleep, schoolwork, activities, and family routines, then adjust it when those needs change.
Choose the control system that matches the child’s device
Parental controls are tied primarily to the operating system on the child’s device. A parent may manage settings from another device in some cases, but the child’s phone still determines which service can supervise it.

| Child’s device | Primary system | What it can manage | Important coverage limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone | Family Sharing and Screen Time | Category or app time allowances, schedules, downloads, websites, content ratings, and some communication-safety settings | Apple’s controls are designed for Apple devices; they do not turn an Android parent phone into a universal management console |
| Android phone or tablet | Google Family Link | Daily limits, per-app blocks or allowances, downtime, remote locking, Google Play approvals, and Chrome, YouTube, and Search controls | The child device must be an eligible Android device; Family Link cannot supervise an iPhone, iPad, or a non-Chromebook computer as the child device |
| Supported Android phone | Android Settings > Parental Controls | Parent PIN, daily limits, downtime, individual app limits or blocks, and mature-content filters | The feature was introduced in beta on a subset of supported devices, so menus and availability depend on the phone and software version |
| Mixed-device household | Apple and Google systems together | Each child device can receive native limits and filters from its own platform | Expect two separate parent dashboards and separate passcodes or accounts |
Before changing a limit, identify which account is signed in on the child’s device and update the phone’s operating system where practical. A control configured for one child account may not apply to a second account or to a guest profile.

Set up social-media limits on an iPhone
1. Create or connect the child’s Apple Account
Apple’s Child Safety guidance calls setting up a Child Account with Family Sharing the first important step. On the parent’s iPhone or iPad, open Settings > your name > Family > Add Member > Create Child Account. Follow the prompts, then sign in to that child account on the child’s iPhone. If the child already has an Apple Account, add that account to the family group instead of creating a duplicate.

Family Sharing establishes who is the parent or guardian and which device belongs to the child. Without that relationship, Screen Time settings may remain local to the phone and be easier for the child to change.
2. Open the child’s Screen Time controls
From the parent device, go to Settings > Family, tap the child’s name, and open the Screen Time controls. Apple allows a Family Sharing organizer or a designated parent or guardian to manage the child’s apps, websites, contacts, schedules, and content restrictions remotely.
If the family organizer does not own an Apple device, Apple still permits the parent to create the Child Account and configure Screen Time directly on the child’s iPhone. In that arrangement, perform the setup on the child’s phone and keep the Screen Time passcode private.

Open Time Allowances, tap Add, and choose a daily total. You can target the social-media category rather than imposing one limit on every app, then fine-tune a single app when necessary. For example, a family might give social networking one allowance while leaving school, navigation, or messaging apps outside that category.
Use an individual-app limit when one service is causing the problem. A per-app allowance is more precise than reducing the entire phone’s daily budget, especially when the child needs the device for homework, two-factor authentication, or family communication. The allowance is a daily budget; it does not guarantee that the app will be available during every part of the day unless a schedule also permits it.
4. Add school, homework, meal, and bedtime schedules
Open Screen Time Schedule, turn on Schedule, tap Add Schedule, and define the days and times when use should be limited. Create separate windows for school days and weekends when the family’s routine differs. A schedule can pause device use during class, homework, meals, or bedtime while allowing selected apps or contacts when appropriate.

Check the schedule after creating it. A daily allowance controls how much time is available; a schedule controls when that time can be used. A child can therefore reach a daily limit before bedtime, or have time remaining that is unavailable during a scheduled downtime window.
5. Close common iPhone workarounds
- New downloads: Turn on Ask to Buy so the parent approves eligible purchases and downloads.
- Web access: In Ask to Browse, require approval for websites, or choose Approved Websites Only when a tightly restricted list is appropriate.
- Specific apps and sites: Block an app or website directly when a category allowance is not enough.
- Age ratings: Use Content & Privacy Restrictions to enforce app, media, and other content ratings.
Apple says Ask to Buy and Ask to Browse are on by default for children under 13, while Limit Adult Websites is on by default for children under 18, subject to regional and age rules. Verify the actual switches on the child’s account rather than assuming a default has not changed.
6. Protect the settings
Create a Screen Time passcode that the child does not know, and do not reuse the phone’s unlock code. Store recovery information where another adult in the household can access it if necessary. If a child learns the passcode, any time limit, website filter, or schedule can be changed without the parent’s agreement.
Set up social-media limits on Android with Family Link
1. Confirm account and device eligibility
The parent needs a Google Account. The child needs a supervised Google Account on Android 6.0 or later, a compatible Chromebook, or a compatible Fitbit. The parent can run Family Link on an Android phone, an iPhone or iPad running iOS 16 or later, or a Chromebook that supports Android apps.
Family Link does not supervise an iPhone, iPad, or ordinary non-Chromebook computer as the child device. If the child uses one of those devices, use that platform’s own controls or manage each device separately.

Set different values for school nights, weekends, holidays, and exam periods rather than forcing one schedule onto every day. Family Link also supports downtime or bedtime windows. During downtime, the child’s device can be restricted while parent-approved exceptions remain available.
3. Block or allow each social app
To manage a particular app, open Screen time > Time limits > App limits. Review the app list, select the social app, and switch it to Blocked or Allowed. A blocked app is blocked on the child’s eligible Android devices or Chromebooks after the device connects; if it was open, the child receives a short warning before access stops.
Use an app-level setting when the family wants one service unavailable but still needs other communication or educational apps. An allowed app can remain usable during some device schedules, depending on the exceptions configured in Family Link.
4. Add purchase, website, and content controls
- Google Play: Require approval for purchases and downloads, and set maturity restrictions for apps, games, films, books, and other content.
- Chrome: Block inappropriate sites, set website permissions, or approve specific sites.
- Search: Use SafeSearch and review the child’s search settings.
- YouTube: Apply the available supervised-content controls for the child’s account.
- Remote lock: Lock the child’s Android or ChromeOS device from Family Link when a schedule requires an immediate stop.
Google says SafeSearch is on by default for signed-in users under 13, or the applicable local age, when their accounts are managed by Family Link. Check the setting directly because local age rules and account status affect defaults.
5. Test the restriction on the child’s phone
After saving a limit, connect the child’s device to the internet and open the targeted app. Confirm that the remaining time, blocked state, or downtime message appears. A setting may not show immediately if the phone is offline or has not synchronized with the child’s supervised account.
Use Android’s on-device Parental Controls when available
Some Android phones include Settings > Parental Controls rather than requiring Family Link for basic limits. Google announced this option initially as a beta feature on a subset of supported devices. It provides a parent PIN, daily limits, downtime schedules, individual app limits or blocks, and mature-content filters.

Open the phone’s Settings app and search for “Parental Controls.” If the menu is present, create a parent PIN that differs from the child’s screen-unlock code, then configure the daily limit, downtime, app rules, and content filters. If the menu is absent, the phone or software version does not expose the beta feature; use Family Link instead. Do not assume that a setting shown on one manufacturer’s Android phone exists on another.

Neither Apple nor Google publishes one universal daily social-media number for every child. Apple describes suggested Time Allowances as informed by age and health research but adjustable by the family. Google likewise places the decision with parents. Treat the first limit as a starting agreement, not a permanent medical or educational prescription.
Start with the routine, not the app
- List non-negotiable periods: school, sleep, meals, homework, sports, religious activities, and family time.
- Decide when social media is allowed, such as after homework or only in shared rooms on school nights.
- Set the social-media budget that fits those windows, leaving enough time for necessary communication.
- Review the child’s actual use after several days and adjust one variable at a time.
A category allowance is useful when several social apps compete for one shared budget. An app-specific limit is better when one app dominates or has a different purpose. A whole-device limit is the broadest option and may interfere with schoolwork or safety calls, so use it only when that trade-off is intentional.
Coordinate limits with permissions
A time limit does not prevent a child from reaching the same service through a browser, a second account, or a newly installed app. Pair the allowance with download approval, website restrictions, and age filters. Keep an approved route for essential communication so the child is not forced to bypass controls during an emergency.
Explain the rule and the exception
Tell the child when the limit resets, which apps share the allowance, what happens during downtime, and how to request extra time. Apple schedules can allow temporary extra access, and Family Link can be adjusted by the parent. A clearly explained exception process reduces arguments and makes it easier to distinguish a genuine need from a routine request.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsManage a household with both iPhones and Android phones
There is no single native dashboard that combines Apple Screen Time management with Family Link supervision for every device. Create the child’s Apple Account and Family Sharing relationship for an iPhone, and use a supervised Google Account with Family Link for an Android phone or Chromebook.
Best Value
A parent may run Family Link from an iPhone or iPad with iOS 16 or later, but that does not make the parent’s Apple device the supervised child device. Conversely, Apple’s Family Sharing settings do not supervise an Android child phone. Write down which parent account controls each device, where each passcode is stored, and which adult handles approval requests.
| Household situation | Practical plan |
|---|---|
| Parent uses Android; child uses iPhone | Complete Family Sharing and Screen Time on the child’s iPhone, or have another Apple device owner administer the family group. Keep the Screen Time passcode private. |
| Parent uses iPhone; child uses Android | Install Family Link on the parent’s iPhone or iPad running iOS 16 or later and supervise the child’s Google Account. |
| Child uses both platforms | Configure each device separately, align schedules manually, and test both devices at the start of school nights and bedtime. |
What these controls can and cannot tell you
Screen Time and Family Link control access, duration, schedules, downloads, websites, content ratings, and selected communication-safety signals. They are boundary-setting tools, not a guarantee that a child will encounter no harmful content.
The official documentation does not claim that these systems read every social-media message or provide complete in-app monitoring. Do not promise universal detection of bullying, grooming, self-harm discussions, or other harmful conversations. Combine technical limits with age-appropriate conversations, privacy-respecting supervision, and a clear way for the child to report a problem.

Troubleshoot limits that are not working
The app is still available after you blocked it
- Confirm that the child is signed in to the supervised Apple or Google account, not a different account or guest profile.
- Connect the device to the internet and allow time for Family Link or Screen Time changes to synchronize.
- Check whether the service is also reachable through a browser and apply the relevant website rule.
- Look for a second copy of the app, a web shortcut, or an alternative social-media client.
The child can install a replacement app
Turn on Ask to Buy for Apple downloads or Google Play purchase and download approvals. Apply age and maturity restrictions, then review the app list periodically. Blocking one known app is not a substitute for controlling new installations.
The schedule conflicts with the daily allowance
Review both settings separately. A daily allowance limits total use; a schedule limits the hours in which use is possible. Decide which rule should be stricter and adjust the other so the child has a predictable window rather than an accidental all-day block.
The parent forgot the passcode or PIN
Use the platform’s account recovery process rather than guessing repeatedly. Keep recovery details with the family’s other important account information, and change the code after recovery if the child may have seen it.
A control appears on one phone but not another
Check the operating-system version, device model, account age, region, and whether the feature is still a beta rollout. Android’s on-device Parental Controls are not present on every phone, and Apple and Google expose different menus even when the goal is the same.
Maintenance checklist for parents
- Review social apps, browser access, and download approvals once a month.
- Recheck schedules at the start of a school term, holiday, or sports season.
- Update the child’s device and the parent-management app when updates are offered.
- Verify that the child has not added another account, enabled a guest profile, or moved use to a second device.
- Ask whether the current limit supports sleep, schoolwork, friendships, and necessary communication.
- Adjust the allowance deliberately and tell the child what changed and why.
The most reliable setup combines a targeted social-media budget with downtime, installation approval, website filtering, and a passcode the child does not know. Apple families configure those layers through Family Sharing and Screen Time; Android families use Family Link or, where available, the phone’s own Parental Controls. The settings establish boundaries, while regular review and open conversations determine whether those boundaries remain useful.
