How to Set Up Parental Controls for Sonic Games on Nintendo Switch 2

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

To restrict Sonic games on a Nintendo Switch 2, open System Settings > Parental Controls > Set Up Parental Controls. Choose a preset restriction level or Custom Settings, set Restricted Software to the age threshold you want, review communication options, and save. You can complete the same basic setup with Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Parental Controls smart-device app.

The important limitation is scope: Switch 2 parental controls apply to the entire console, not to one user profile. A restriction selected to protect one child also affects everyone who plays on that Switch 2. The software rule uses the rating organization selected for your region, so check the rating for the exact Sonic game and edition rather than assuming every Sonic release has the same rating.

What Switch 2 parental controls can and cannot do for Sonic games

Nintendo’s controls are system-level rules. They can prevent software above a chosen age threshold from being used, restrict open communication in games, and—when managed through the smart-device app—add time and activity controls. They are not a separate control panel inside each Sonic game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Software age restriction: blocks games whose official rating is above the selected threshold.
  • Communication restriction: limits open communication between users, including chat features and message exchange. Nintendo allows this restriction to apply across software or to be adjusted by title.
  • App-based controls: add play-time limits, gameplay history, selected-game exceptions, and GameChat management.
  • Account controls: Nintendo Account settings separately manage eShop viewing and purchases, friend suggestions, and third-party information-sharing choices.

There is no documented setting that gives each Sonic title its own unrelated age limit. The normal method is to select a rating threshold for the console. If a parent has reviewed a particular game that the threshold would block, the app can allow that selected software to ignore the Restricted Software rule. That exception does not automatically change communication, purchase, or GameChat settings.

Check the exact Sonic game’s rating first

Switch 2 applies the rating category issued by the rating organization selected for the console. The organization normally defaults to the one appropriate for the console’s region. A rating shown in one country is not a universal rating for every market, release, or edition.

United States ESRB examples

Game U.S. ESRB rating Content descriptors shown by ESRB What to verify
SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS for Nintendo Switch 2 Everyone 10+ (E10+) Fantasy Violence; In-Game Purchases Confirm that the listing or package is the Switch 2 edition and that the rating shown for your market matches the copy you intend to use.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Everyone (E) Mild Fantasy Violence Check the rating on the specific regional game listing or package before choosing a threshold.

These are U.S. ESRB examples, not a rating claim about every Sonic game. Other Sonic releases, editions, and territories may carry different categories. A family in the United States deciding whether to permit an E10+ title would need a threshold that allows Everyone 10+ software; a family that wants only Everyone-rated software would select the stricter option. Use the rating symbol and organization displayed for your own region.

Set up controls directly on the Switch 2

The console route is enough for the basic software and communication restrictions and does not require a phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select Parental Controls, then choose Set Up Parental Controls.
  3. Continue without the app if you want to configure the console locally.
  4. Choose a restriction preset, or select Custom Settings for more control.
  5. Open Restricted Software and choose the age threshold that matches the rating you are willing to allow.
  6. Review the communication restriction. Apply it across software or adjust it by title if that is the approach you want.
  7. Save the settings and complete the on-screen PIN setup.

The threshold is interpreted using the rating organization selected for the Switch 2. It is not a Sonic-specific filter: the same rule evaluates every game used on that console.

Changing settings after setup

To revise an existing configuration, Nintendo’s documented path is System Settings > Parental Controls > Change Settings. Enter the parental-controls PIN, select Change Parental-Controls Settings, choose Restriction Level, then select a preset or Custom Settings and save.

Menu wording can change with system software updates or regional differences. If a label does not match these instructions, use the Parental Controls section and Nintendo’s current Switch 2 support instructions rather than guessing at a similarly named setting.

Use the smart-device app when you need more than an age filter

Nintendo says Switch 2 parental controls can be set up directly on the console or through its smart-device app. The app is the better route when the family needs controls that are not practical to manage only from the console.

Use the app if you want a daily play-time limit, a record of gameplay, an exception for a particular reviewed game, or management of GameChat. Allowing one reviewed Sonic game

If the selected age threshold blocks a Sonic title you have personally reviewed, the app’s allow-list feature can let that individually selected software ignore the Restricted Software rule. This is an exception to the software-age rule, not a new age rating and not a blanket exemption for other Sonic games.

  1. Set the console’s general Restricted Software threshold to the level appropriate for the youngest regular user.
  2. Open the Switch 2 parental-controls settings in the smart-device app.
  3. Select the reviewed game you want to exempt from the software restriction.
  4. Save the exception and confirm that it applies only to that selected software.
  5. Review communication and GameChat settings separately; the allow list does not change them.

How to choose a restriction level for a family console

When the youngest player should determine the threshold

Because controls are system-wide, choose a baseline that suits the youngest person who uses the Switch 2. Older players may then be unable to launch games above that baseline unless a parent uses the app’s selected-game exception. This approach avoids assuming that a profile switch will remove a restriction; Nintendo describes the Switch 2 controls as applying to the console rather than per user.

When a custom setting is preferable

A preset is faster when the family wants a broad age category and standard restrictions. Choose Custom Settings when you need to set the software threshold deliberately, decide how communication should work, or make a title-specific communication adjustment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When no age block is the right answer

Some families may decide that a game’s rating is acceptable but still want communication, play-time, or GameChat limits. In that case, do not raise the software threshold solely to solve a chat concern. Keep the software decision and communication decision separate, then use the app for time and GameChat controls where needed.

Communication restrictions and GameChat are different

Nintendo describes the communication control as limiting open communication between users, including chat features and message exchange. You can apply it across software or adjust it by title. Nintendo’s FAQ also states that this in-game communication restriction does not apply to GameChat.

That distinction matters for Sonic games with online or social features. Turning on the general in-game communication restriction should not be presented as a way to manage every GameChat interaction. Treat the two areas as separate tasks:

  • Use the console or app’s communication setting for supported in-game chat and message exchange.
  • Use the app’s GameChat management controls for GameChat-specific decisions.
  • Do not assume that allowing a Sonic game through the software exception also allows its communication features.

Nintendo says the app is required for children under 16 to use GameChat under its described setup. Families with a child under that age should therefore configure the app if GameChat access is part of the plan.

Keep Nintendo Account restrictions separate

Game-use controls live in the Switch 2 Parental Controls area, but several account-level choices belong to Nintendo Account settings instead. These include:

Blocking a Sonic game with Restricted Software does not, by itself, explain or configure eShop purchase controls. If the concern is buying downloadable content or another game, review Nintendo Account settings separately. Do not treat an eShop purchase block as a substitute for a software age restriction, or vice versa.

Common setup problems and the right fix

A Sonic game is blocked even though it seems appropriate

First, check the exact rating and rating organization for the installed edition. A game may be rated differently in another territory, and the Switch 2 evaluates the organization selected for the console. If you have reviewed the title and want it available despite the general threshold, use the app’s selected-game exception. That exception applies to the chosen software only.

The setting affects an older player too

This is expected behavior, not a profile error. Switch 2 parental controls are system-wide. Lower the baseline only if it remains suitable for everyone, or use an app exception for a specific reviewed game. There is no evidence here of a separate per-user age threshold.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The app shows a game exception, but chat is still restricted

The software allow list concerns the Restricted Software rule. Communication controls are separate, and GameChat is separate again. Review each setting area independently instead of assuming that one approval carries over to the others.

GameChat still does not work for a child under 16

Nintendo’s described setup requires the app for children under 16 to use GameChat. Confirm that the Switch 2 is configured in the smart-device app and that the GameChat-specific controls have been reviewed. The general in-game communication setting does not control GameChat.

The console menu uses different wording

System menu labels can change. Start in System Settings > Parental Controls, look for the setup or change-settings option, and compare the available labels with Nintendo’s current Switch 2 support documentation. Do not infer that an eShop or Nintendo Account option is the same as a game-use restriction.

A parent wants to block purchases, not gameplay

Use Nintendo Account settings for eShop viewing and purchases. The Parental Controls software threshold is aimed at whether software can be used, not at account purchasing permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical setup checklist

  • Identify the exact Sonic title, edition, and region.
  • Read the rating symbol and content descriptors from the package or game listing.
  • Decide whether the baseline must suit the youngest person using the console.
  • On the Switch 2, open System Settings > Parental Controls > Set Up Parental Controls.
  • Choose a preset or Custom Settings.
  • Set Restricted Software to the chosen age threshold.
  • Decide whether communication should be restricted across software or adjusted by title.
  • Use the smart-device app if you need play-time limits, gameplay history, selected-game exceptions, or GameChat management.
  • Configure eShop, purchase, friend-suggestion, and third-party information-sharing choices in Nintendo Account settings when those are the concern.
  • Test the result with the child’s normal play situation, including any communication or GameChat feature that matters to your family.

What the rating examples mean in practice

Suppose the console is set to allow Everyone-rated software only. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, listed by the U.S. ESRB as Everyone with Mild Fantasy Violence, falls within that example threshold. SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS, listed as Everyone 10+ with Fantasy Violence and In-Game Purchases, would be above an Everyone-only threshold and could be blocked by the software rule. A parent who has reviewed it could use the app’s selected-game exception, while leaving the general threshold in place for other titles.

This example does not predict how a different regional rating organization will classify either game. The package or listing for the exact local edition remains the authority for choosing the threshold.

Questions parents commonly ask

Can I block just one Sonic game?

The age restriction is a console-wide threshold, so it is not a one-title block list. To keep a particular game unavailable, set a threshold below that game’s rating. If the goal is the reverse—allowing one reviewed game that exceeds the baseline—the smart-device app can add that selected title as an exception.

Can different children have different Sonic age limits?

No separate per-user age threshold is documented for Switch 2 parental controls. The setting applies to everyone using the console. Choose the baseline for the youngest regular player and use a selected-game exception for an older child’s reviewed title when appropriate.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does an E10+ rating always mean a game is blocked?

Only if the chosen threshold is below E10+ under the rating organization selected for the console. A family allowing E10+ software can use the title normally; a family allowing Everyone-rated software only may see it restricted. Always check the local rating because categories vary by territory and edition.

Do content descriptors change the automatic decision?

The software rule evaluates the game’s rating category. Descriptors such as Fantasy Violence or In-Game Purchases provide additional information for a parent’s decision, but they are not separate Sonic-specific switches in the setup path. Review both the category and descriptors before deciding whether to use an exception.

Will an app exception remove a purchase restriction?

No. The allow list concerns the Restricted Software rule only. eShop viewing and purchasing are Nintendo Account matters, while communication and GameChat have their own controls. Configure each area separately.

Is a phone required for basic Sonic restrictions?

No. You can configure the software threshold and communication restriction directly on the console. A smart device is needed for the app’s additional functions, including play-time limits, gameplay history, selected-game exceptions, and the documented GameChat management options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do after changing the rating threshold?

Save the new setting and try the specific Sonic title from the normal user’s profile. If it remains blocked, verify the edition and rating organization, then check whether an app exception or a separate communication or GameChat rule is responsible. Do not assume that changing one setting changes the others.

Bottom-line decision guide

Use the console when you need a straightforward, system-wide age threshold or communication restriction without a phone. Use the smart-device app when you also need time limits, activity history, a reviewed-game exception, or GameChat management. Base the threshold on the exact Sonic game’s local rating and the youngest person who uses the Switch 2. Finally, keep game access, communication, GameChat, and Nintendo Account purchasing decisions separate so that changing one does not create an unintended gap in another.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I block a Sonic game on Nintendo Switch 2?

Open System Settings > Parental Controls > Set Up Parental Controls, choose a preset or Custom Settings, and set Restricted Software to a threshold below the game’s rating. The rule applies across the console, not only to one profile.

Can I set a different age limit for each Sonic game?

No separate per-game age limits are documented. Use one console-wide threshold, then use the smart-device app’s selected-game exception to allow a particular reviewed title that the baseline would block.

Do Switch 2 parental controls work with GameChat?

GameChat has separate management in the smart-device app. Nintendo says the general in-game communication restriction does not apply to GameChat, and the app is required for children under 16 to use GameChat under its described setup.

Why is Sonic X Shadow Generations blocked when another Sonic game works?

In the U.S. ESRB examples, Sonic X Shadow Generations is Everyone 10+, while Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is Everyone. An Everyone-only threshold can therefore allow the racing game while restricting the E10+ title. Confirm the ratings for your own region and edition.

Can I restrict purchases of Sonic games separately?

Yes, but use Nintendo Account settings for eShop viewing and purchase restrictions. Restricted Software controls whether a game can be used; they do not substitute for account-level purchase controls.

Do parental controls apply only to a child’s profile?

No. Nintendo describes Switch 2 controls as system-wide. The same software and communication limits affect everyone who uses that console, including older players.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What can the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app add?

The app adds play-time limits, gameplay history, individually selected software exceptions, and GameChat management, while also providing the software and communication settings available through the console.

The Bottom Line

For a basic Sonic restriction, use System Settings > Parental Controls > Set Up Parental Controls and choose the appropriate rating threshold. Remember that the rule is system-wide. Use the smart-device app for time limits, activity history, selected-game exceptions, and GameChat controls, and manage eShop purchases separately through Nintendo Account settings.
