Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStart with the child’s own Windows account, add it to your Microsoft family group, and set both a device schedule and (if needed) a separate limit for the individual game. Then open the account used to launch the game—such as Steam, Epic Games or Roblox—and configure its chat, content, multiplayer and purchase controls. Windows cannot enforce rules that belong only to a game or storefront.
The exact menu names can vary by Windows release, country, child age and platform update. Before changing anything, identify the Windows login the child uses and the service that starts the game. A parent’s adult Windows login does not provide the same child-account controls.

Understand which layer controls what
Parental controls on a gaming PC are split between the Windows account and the account operated by the game or launcher. Using only one layer leaves gaps.

Identify the child account and game service first
Use the child’s own Windows sign-in
Ask the child to show the account name used at the Windows sign-in screen. It should be a separate family-linked account, not the parent’s administrator profile. Microsoft’s Xbox Gaming Safety Toolkit says, “It is critical that you set up their account as a child account so you can use the parental controls correctly.”
Add the child through Xbox Family Settings or the Microsoft Family Safety portal. The child’s date of birth influences default settings, so review the settings manually rather than assuming the defaults match your household rules.
Find the launcher or publisher account
Start the game and note which account or launcher is signed in. A Steam title uses Steam Families controls; Fortnite or UEFN uses Epic controls; Roblox uses a linked Roblox parent account. If the game uses another service, look for that publisher’s official family, safety or parental-control page. A Windows limit will not substitute for those service-specific settings.

- Sign in to the Microsoft account you use as the parent.
- Open Microsoft Family Safety, or use Xbox Family Settings, and add the child’s Microsoft account to the family group.
- Confirm that the account shown is the one used for the child’s Windows login and that the displayed birth date and region are correct.
- Open the child’s profile and select the Windows device. Review the available screen-time and app controls before choosing a schedule.
If the child is still using an adult account, create or add a child account before configuring limits. Otherwise, the family tools may not apply to the session you are trying to supervise.
Limit when the Windows PC can be used
A device schedule controls access to the Windows device for the child’s account. It is different from a limit on one game.
- In Microsoft Family Safety, select the child’s profile.
- Choose the Windows platform and the relevant PC.
- Open the screen-time schedule or daily time allowance control.
- Set the permitted hours for each day. You can reuse one schedule across the week or tailor individual days.
- Save the schedule, then check the next day’s entry to make sure the allowance and permitted window are both what you intended.
Microsoft’s screen-time guidance also counts Xbox use while the person remains signed in. Remind the child to sign out when finished if you do not want an idle signed-in session to continue counting.
Set a separate limit for one game
Use an app or game limit when the child may use the PC for homework or other approved activities but should have a separate allowance for a particular title.

- Open Microsoft Family Safety and select the child.
- Choose Apps, features, and games.
- Turn on app and game limits.
- Select the game from the list.
- Set the daily time allowance and the hours during which the game is permitted.
- Choose whether to use the same rule every day or create different rules for different days, then save.
Microsoft states, “Time limits do not work on websites.” A browser version of a game or a web activity therefore is not covered by an app-and-game limit. If the title appears more than once because it is installed on multiple devices, select the listing that belongs to the PC you are configuring and check the device name before saving.
Do not describe this setting as a general internet-time blocker. It applies to the selected app or game, while the device schedule governs the Windows device itself.
Configure Steam Families for a Steam game
Steam Families is the current family-control system; it replaced the older Family View and Steam Family Sharing workflows. Open Steam’s family-management settings while signed in with the family organizer account, then add the child’s Steam account to the family.
Choose the permissions the child needs
- Allow only the games you have approved for the child’s library.
- Use the available playtime limits and reports to review when the child plays.
- Restrict Store, community and chat features when those communications are not appropriate.
- Require an approval request when the child needs more time or access to a restricted feature.
- Record the recovery information for the child account so a lost sign-in can be restored without handing over the parent’s credentials.
Steam’s controls apply to the Steam account and its family permissions. They do not change settings for a game launched through a different launcher or for another Windows user.
Configure Epic controls for Fortnite and UEFN
Epic provides controls for Fortnite and UEFN accounts, including time limits, play windows, weekly time views and reports, age-rating restrictions and communication settings. Open the child’s Epic account safety or parental-controls area and set the rules there.
Set time and communication rules
- Sign in to the parent account linked to the child’s Epic account.
- Choose the time-limit controls and define the permitted daily amount and play windows.
- Review the weekly activity view to see whether the schedule matches actual use.
- Set the age-rating and communication options appropriate for the child, including whether voice, text or friend interactions are allowed.
Epic says time limits follow the child’s account across devices when the same account is used. A limit configured on a console or device can impose a stricter restriction in addition to the account-wide rule.
Handle Epic purchases correctly
Epic’s payment PIN protects Epic payment methods, but it does not govern payments made through Steam, Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo Switch. It also does not control V-Bucks spending. For Epic Games purchases on a PC, Epic’s support guidance suggests considering removal of stored payment methods. Apply any separate purchase approval required by the store that actually processes a transaction.

Configure Roblox parental controls
Roblox uses a linked parent account. After linking your account to the child’s account, on desktop open Settings, choose Parental controls, and select the child.

Available Roblox settings
- Content maturity levels and the ability to block or allow individual experiences.
- Experience chat and direct-chat settings, plus friend-management controls.
- Visibility and private-server options.
- Spending limits and spending notifications.
- Daily screen-time limits.
Roblox says that some controls change at age 13: children manage their own screen-time limits and blocking, and spending limits no longer apply. Review the account again when the child reaches that age.
Roblox also notes that its chat settings cover experience chat and direct chat, not chat features added independently by a creator inside an experience. Treat the displayed Roblox options as the boundary of what Roblox can enforce.
Block chat, multiplayer and purchases at the correct account
When a child can communicate or spend money despite a Windows limit, identify where that action is processed.
- Chat or voice: change the communication setting in Steam, Epic, Roblox or the relevant publisher account. Windows Family Safety does not own those chat permissions.
- Multiplayer: use the game or platform’s multiplayer and friend controls. A device schedule only stops access after the allowed time ends.
- Game purchases: apply the game account’s PIN, approval or spending limit, if offered.
- Store purchases: configure the store that receives the payment and remove saved payment methods when appropriate.
- Virtual currency: check whether the service treats currency separately. Epic’s payment PIN excludes V-Bucks, and Roblox’s spending rules have age and redemption exceptions.
Never assume that a PIN set in one service protects purchases completed by another store or console network.

Verify the setup with the child
After saving the controls, sign in with the child’s account and inspect what is actually visible. This catches account and device mismatches before the next play session.
- Confirm the child’s Windows profile, family membership, age and region.
- Check that the intended PC is selected in the device schedule.
- Open the app-and-game list and verify that the correct installation is selected, especially when duplicate listings appear.
- Launch the game and confirm that the child sees only the approved library, content rating and communication options.
- Check the purchase flow and verify that an approval, PIN or blocked state appears where expected.
- Review the displayed schedule with the child so they know when play is allowed and how to request more time.
Microsoft specifically recommends manually checking family settings. This review is more reliable than assuming a default based only on the child’s age.

Fix common setup failures
The limit does nothing
First check that the child is signed in to the family-linked Windows account, not an adult account. Then confirm that the rule targets the correct PC and game listing. If the child is playing through a website, the app limit cannot enforce the session because Microsoft says web activity is outside that control.
The game appears more than once
Multiple installations or devices can create multiple entries. Compare the device name and select the listing associated with the PC the child uses. Avoid setting a rule on an unused listing and assuming it covers the active installation.

The child can still use chat or buy items
Those actions may belong to Steam, Epic, Roblox or another service rather than Windows. Open the relevant account’s family settings and configure communication and spending separately. For Epic, remember that the payment PIN does not cover other stores or V-Bucks. For Roblox, check whether the child’s age has changed which controls are available and whether the transaction uses a gift card or another excluded route.
The child changes the rule
Review which account is acting as the parent or family organizer and keep its sign-in credentials private. Configure the rules while signed in to the parent account, then verify the child’s view. If a game has its own parent-account link, make sure that link is still active.
The menu does not match these steps
Microsoft, Steam, Epic and Roblox can rename or rearrange settings. Use the current official help page for the service, confirm that you are in the child’s profile, and look for equivalent labels such as family, safety, parental controls, screen time, communication or spending. Do not rely on legacy instructions for Steam Family View.
Decide which combination fits your household
| Household need | Configure first | Then add |
|---|---|---|
| Stop gaming after a household bedtime | Windows device schedule | Game-service time windows if the child plays on other devices. |
| Allow schoolwork but limit one title | Windows app-and-game limit | The launcher’s own playtime and content settings. |
| Prevent unwanted messages | Game or storefront communication controls | Friend, visibility and private-server restrictions offered by that service. |
| Prevent spending | Store and payment-method controls | Game-specific PINs, approval requests and virtual-currency limits. |
| Manage a game played on several devices | Account-level controls in the game service | Stricter device schedules on each Windows PC or console. |
Use the narrowest control that solves the problem, then layer a broader device schedule over it when the child needs a consistent household boundary.
Review age, region and platform boundaries
Age and region can change which controls are displayed. Epic notes that age-rating examples and some paid-random-item settings can vary by region. Roblox uses local currency for spending settings and documents exceptions for some consoles. Microsoft’s defaults also depend on the child account’s date of birth.
Recheck the settings after a major launcher update, a device change, a birthday that crosses an age threshold, or a switch to a different store. The controls are account- and platform-specific, so a rule that works on the Windows PC may not follow the child to a console, browser session or another account.
