Start by checking whether the child meets the AI service’s current age rules in your region. Then configure the service’s own privacy and feature controls, add device or family limits where useful, and agree on what the child should never share. These steps cover ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot for personal accounts; controls and availability can vary by location, account type, and app version.
1. Check age eligibility before setting up an account
Confirm the service’s minimum age and regional rules before creating or linking an account. Microsoft says Copilot users must be at least 13, with a potentially higher minimum in some countries or regions. Its guidance can also differ by app version and between personal and school or work accounts. The current young-people guidance is for personal Microsoft accounts and identifies an updated app version available from August 18, 2026. Check Microsoft’s current Copilot guidance and the terms for the account and country in use.

The UK Children’s Commissioner’s December 2025 guide for parents and carers summarizes age requirements for several AI services, but warns that they can change. It is a dated UK reference, not a global authority on current eligibility.
Understand what age checks mean
A provider may ask for a date of birth without independently verifying it. The Commissioner distinguishes age verification, which uses proof such as government ID; age inference, which draws on signals such as language or search terms; and age estimation, which estimates an age range from sources such as facial scans. A checkbox or entered birth date alone is not accurate age assurance or verification. These distinctions can help you ask how a service handles age, but they do not replace checking its current rules.

2. Configure ChatGPT’s linked parental controls
ChatGPT lets a parent or guardian link their account with a teen’s account and manage selected settings. Start with OpenAI’s parental controls guidance for the current linking steps and options; feature availability may depend on rollout.
Choose which features and settings to manage
The parental-controls page describes options to turn off model training and memory, remove voice mode, image generation, or group chats, set quiet hours, and enable a study mode that asks questions and gives hints before answering. Review each option with the teen and choose settings that fit how the tool will be used.

Know what linked access does not show
Linking accounts does not give the parent access to the teen’s chat transcripts, chat history, or real-time activity. Safety notifications may be sent in limited situations, but they are not a complete monitoring feed. Either person can unlink the accounts; if the teen unlinks, the parent is notified and the controls and notifications stop. When the teen account moves out of the teen experience at age 18, parental controls and teen protections end.

- Model training: whether conversations may be used to improve models, and what the account’s control changes.
- Memory and personalization: whether the service can retain details to personalize future interactions.
- History and deletion: what chat history is kept and how deletion works.
- Sharing: whether conversations or group features can expose content to other users.
- Voice and uploads: whether the child can submit voice, images, or other potentially sensitive material.
- Notifications: what account or safety notifications a parent receives, if any.
A setting that changes model-training use does not, by itself, establish that chats are deleted or excluded from other service, safety, or legal processing. Consult the provider’s current privacy documentation for retention and other data practices. OpenAI describes training and memory controls on its parental-controls page. Microsoft says young people’s Copilot chats are not used for training in its young-people guidance.

Microsoft points parents to Microsoft Family Safety or device settings from Apple or Google to block Copilot access, set usage hours, or choose access to features such as image generation, voice, group chat, or AI companions. Some controls may require the child to be in a family group. These are family- or device-level restrictions, not a parent-readable transcript of Copilot conversations. Check Microsoft’s current Copilot guidance for the app version and account type in use.

5. Set clear rules for prompts, uploads, and shared chats
Tell children not to enter or upload information that could identify or compromise them or someone else. Microsoft specifically advises against sharing addresses, passwords, phone numbers, school details, or identifying information about themselves or others. Photos, documents, and other uploads can also contain sensitive details.

Decide together which features are appropriate and what information should stay out of prompts and uploads.
6. Make a plan for important or concerning answers
Microsoft cautions that Copilot can make mistakes and says it should not replace advice from a trusted adult. Agree that the child will check important or sensitive answers with you or another trusted adult, rather than treating an AI response as authoritative. OpenAI’s limited safety notifications are a prompt for a conversation, not a way to inspect everything a teen does. Product protections do not establish that every harmful answer or workaround will be prevented.

Microsoft’s current young-people guidance says young people do not receive personalized ads. An older Copilot support page also stated this for users under 18, but referenced older app guidance; check the current page for the version being used.
