How do I set up parental controls and playtime limits on PS5? Sign in as the family manager or a parent/guardian appointed by that manager, then open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management. Select the child, confirm the child account’s time zone, open Playtime Settings, choose the days, playable hours, duration and end-of-time behavior, and select Save.
These controls belong to the child’s PlayStation account rather than to one console. The schedule therefore applies when that child signs in on a PS5 or PS4. A separate child account in the adult’s PlayStation family is required; changing a setting while the child is playing may require the child to sign out and back in before it takes effect.

What you need before setting a limit
PlayStation’s playtime controls are part of family management. They are not a console-wide timer that any adult can change from a normal user profile. Complete the account setup first so the controls can be assigned to the correct child.

This role check is the first thing to verify when a menu or save option is unavailable. Signing in on the child’s console profile does not grant permission to administer the child account. The permission comes from the family relationship and the adult’s role.
A separate child account in the family
Add the child as a family member with the child’s own PlayStation account. PlayStation describes adult and child accounts as separate accounts linked within one family. Without that child account and family relationship, the child will not appear as a manageable profile in Family Management.
Do not use an adult account as a substitute for a child profile just to get through setup. A schedule is assigned to the account selected in Family Management, so using the wrong profile can make a correctly configured rule appear not to work.
The child account’s time zone
Set the time zone on the child’s account before configuring playtime. The schedule is interpreted using that account setting, so check it first if the family travels or the account was created in a different region.
A time-zone error can make both the start and end of a window look wrong even when the duration is correct. Correct the child profile’s time zone, then review the daily schedule and save it again.
Email verification and a console sign-in
PlayStation lists completing email verification and signing the child in on the console as steps that help parental controls work effectively. Have the child account’s sign-in details available and verify the account before troubleshooting the schedule.
These checks also help identify which account is active. If several family members use the same PS5, look at the signed-in account before testing a limit; the rule follows the child account, not the console user interface alone.

Sign in with the managing adult account. Use the family manager account or an account that the family manager has appointed as a parent/guardian. The child’s account cannot administer its own restriction settings.
-
Open Family Management. From the PS5 home screen, choose Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
-
Select the child. Choose the child account whose schedule you want to change. If the child is missing, return to the family-account setup and confirm that the account was added as a child family member rather than as an unrelated console user.
-
Check the time zone. Set or correct the time zone shown for that child account before opening the schedule. This prevents a valid schedule from being evaluated against the wrong local time.

Open Playtime Settings. Select Playtime Settings for the child. The controls are configured per day, so there is no requirement to use one identical rule for the entire week.
-
Choose whether playtime is restricted. Turn the restriction on when you want the schedule enforced. If a day should have no restriction, configure that day accordingly rather than assuming another day’s rule will carry over.
-
Set Playtime Duration. Enter how much playtime the child may use on each selected day. Choose the duration that matches your household’s agreement; PlayStation’s documentation explains the control but does not prescribe a universally correct number of hours.
-
Set Playable Hours. Define the part of the day during which play is allowed. Duration and playable hours serve different purposes: playable hours establish the permitted window, while duration limits the amount of play within that day’s rule.

-
Save the schedule. Select Save after reviewing every day, the time zone, duration, playable hours and end-of-time behavior. Leaving the screen without saving does not complete the change.
The official PS5 playtime procedure and the names of these settings are documented in PlayStation’s playtime guide.
Review the whole week before you leave
Because each day can have its own rule, check all seven day entries before saving. A weekday may have a short window, while a weekend can use different playable hours and a different duration. The controls do not require one universal value for every day, and the official guidance does not declare a single correct number of hours for every child.

Then confirm whether the end action is a notice or a log-out. This quick review catches the common mistake of changing the duration while leaving an old playable-hours window in place.
What each playtime setting controls
Use the settings together rather than treating “hours per day” as the whole schedule. A child can have a different combination of restriction, window and duration on each day.
| Setting | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Restrict Playtime | Whether the playtime rule is enforced for the selected day. |
| Playtime Duration | The amount of playtime allowed for that day. |
| Playable Hours | The daily period in which play is permitted. |
| Notify Only | PlayStation warns the child when time ends but does not automatically log the child out. |
| Log Out | PlayStation logs the child out when the allowed playtime ends. |
Why both duration and playable hours matter
A playable-hours window answers “when may play start and stop?” A duration answers “how much of that day may be used?” Setting only one of them leaves the other part of the schedule unspecified. For example, a family can use a broad after-school window while still limiting the total duration, or use a shorter window on a school night. The exact values are yours to choose; the official instructions do not identify one ideal daily allowance.

These settings are complementary rather than interchangeable. A long playable window does not necessarily grant that entire period as playtime when a shorter duration is set. Conversely, a generous duration does not open play outside the hours selected for that day.

Configure days individually
Open each day’s controls and check that the restriction, duration and playable hours match the family schedule. Weekdays, weekends, holidays and travel days may need different rules. Review all seven days before saving so an old setting is not mistaken for the new schedule.
If your household changes routines, edit the affected day instead of rebuilding the child account. A one-day exception can be handled as a current-day change by an authorized adult, while the regular weekly pattern remains available for later days.
What happens as the child reaches the limit
When the child is approaching the end of the permitted playtime, an on-screen notification appears at the top of the screen. This warning gives the child an opportunity to finish an activity or ask an adult for more time.
A child can request more time
The child can request additional time from the reminder. The family manager or appointed parent/guardian receives a notification and can change that day’s limit or decline the request. A request does not by itself alter the schedule; an authorized adult must approve a change.
Explain this process before the first play session. The reminder is not an approval, and asking for more time does not bypass the family hierarchy. The adult’s decision is the change that determines whether the current day’s allowance is extended.
An adult can change today’s time
A family manager, parent or guardian can change the playtime for the current day on the PS5 or through the PlayStation Family app. This is useful for a one-off exception, such as a school holiday, without rewriting the regular weekly schedule.
After making a same-day adjustment, verify that the child is using the managed account. If the change was made while the child was already in a game, have the child sign out and back in so the updated control can be applied to the active account session.
Notify Only versus Log Out
Choose Notify Only when reminders are sufficient and the family will handle stopping manually. Choose Log Out when the account should be signed out automatically at the end of its allowed time. Explain the selected behavior to the child beforehand: a notification is a reminder, while the log-out option ends the child’s session.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →These choices are deliberately different. A family using Notify Only should have a separate household agreement for stopping. A family using Log Out should expect the child’s session to end when the allowed time expires and should save progress according to the game’s normal behavior.
Make the same rule work on PS5 and PS4
Playtime restrictions are attached to the child’s account and apply on both PS5 and PS4. You do not need to build a separate schedule for each console the child uses. This also means a child can use up the account’s allowed time on one system and still be subject to the same account-based restriction on the other.

This account-based behavior matters in homes with more than one console. Creating a second local user or changing a setting on only one machine does not create an independent second allowance. Manage the child profile in Family Management instead.
If you edit parental controls while the child is already in a game, PlayStation recommends having the child sign out and then sign back in. Until that fresh sign-in, a change may not be reflected in the active session. This sign-out step is especially important when you have changed the end-of-time action or shortened the current day’s allowance.

Manage controls away from the console
PlayStation Account Management on the web
PlayStation also documents a web route. Sign in to Account Management as the family manager or appointed parent/guardian, open Family Management, select the child, and edit the playtime limit. The web route is useful when the PS5 is being used or when an adult needs to respond to a request from another device. The account role requirement remains the same.
The web route manages the child account rather than a particular piece of hardware. After changing a rule online, allow the child’s account to refresh and use the recommended sign-out/sign-in step if the child is already playing.
PlayStation Family app
The PlayStation Family app is another documented way to manage a child’s playtime and parental controls. It can be used for a current-day adjustment or to review family settings without navigating the console. Availability and displayed labels can vary by mobile platform and account region, so use the child-selection and playtime controls shown for your account.
The app does not remove the family-role requirement. Sign in with the family manager or an appointed parent/guardian, select the correct child, and check that the change applies to the intended day. A notification about a request is an opportunity to review the limit; it is not an automatic extension.
PlayStation’s overview of family controls lists console, web and mobile management, along with controls for age restrictions, privacy and spending. See the official parental-controls overview for the broader set of account options.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot a schedule that is not working
The child does not appear in Family Management
- Confirm that you are signed in as the family manager or an appointed parent/guardian.
- Check that the child has a separate child account and is listed as a member of the adult’s PlayStation family.
- Verify the child’s email and complete any required email verification.
- Make sure you are looking at the family that owns the child account, rather than a different adult account on the console.
The warning or log-out occurs at the wrong time
- Open the child’s profile in Family Management and check its time zone.
- Review the selected day, playable-hours window and duration together; a correct duration cannot compensate for an incorrect window.
- Save the schedule again after correcting the time zone or daily values.
- Check that the child is signed in to the account whose schedule you edited.
A new rule has not affected an active game
Have the child sign out of the PlayStation account and sign back in. PlayStation specifically recommends this after parental-control changes made while the child is playing. This refresh is also a sensible final step after changing a same-day allowance from the web or app.
The child says there was no warning
- Confirm that the child is signed in to the managed child account, not another adult or child account.
- Check that the rule was saved for the correct day.
- Look at the selected end-of-time behavior. Notify Only provides a notice; it does not force a log-out.
- Review the time zone and playable-hours window if the limit appears to fall at an unexpected time.
A parent cannot change the setting
Check the account’s family role. Only the family manager or a parent/guardian appointed by that manager can manage the child’s playtime. A normal adult account without that appointment cannot override the family hierarchy.
A PS4 appears to ignore the rule
Confirm that the same child account is being used on the PS4. The restriction is account-based and applies to PS5 and PS4, but a different account will have its own family-management status and settings.
Use playtime controls with the rest of Family Management
Playtime is one part of the PS5’s parental-control system. The same family-management area can be used for age-related game and content restrictions, privacy settings and spending controls. Configure those separately when the child needs limits beyond time. Playtime settings do not replace content or communication restrictions.
Best Value
For example, a time schedule determines when an account may play, while age and content controls address what that account may access. Privacy and communication controls address interactions, and spending controls address purchases. Review each category rather than assuming a playtime limit covers all four.
The PS5 Quick Start Guide summarizes the scope of parental controls: “Parental controls let you set restrictions on the games children can play, when and how long they play, whether or not they can chat, and more.” The wording appears in Sony’s official CFI-7119 PS5 Quick Start Guide. The guide also explains that adults and children use separate accounts and that a child account is linked to an adult account as part of a family.
Common setup mistakes to avoid
- Using the wrong adult profile: A standard adult account cannot manage a child unless the family manager appoints it as a parent/guardian.
- Skipping the time zone: A correct duration can still be evaluated against the wrong local time.
- Setting only duration: Playable hours define when play is allowed; duration defines how much is allowed.
- Forgetting to save: Changes are not complete until the schedule is saved.
- Testing with another account: The rule belongs to the selected child account and does not automatically apply to every user on the console.
- Expecting Notify Only to force a stop: That option displays a warning but does not automatically sign the child out.
- Changing a rule during gameplay and not refreshing: Sign out and back in after an in-game change so the updated control can take effect.
A final setup checklist
- Adult is signed in as family manager or appointed parent/guardian.
- Child has a separate, verified child account in the PlayStation family.
- Child account time zone is correct.
- Path used: Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management > child > Playtime Settings.
- Restriction status is checked for every relevant day.
- Playtime Duration and Playable Hours are both configured.
- End-of-time action is deliberately set to Notify Only or Log Out.
- Schedule has been saved.
- Child knows how reminders and requests for more time work.
- After an in-game change, child signs out and back in.
- If the child uses a PS4 as well as a PS5, the same account-based rule has been considered.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I set a PS5 playtime limit without creating a child account?
No. The child needs a separate child account added as a member of the adult’s PlayStation family. The schedule is assigned to that account.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Who is allowed to change a child’s playtime?
Only the family manager or a parent/guardian appointed by the family manager can manage the child’s playtime settings.
Do PS5 playtime limits also apply on PS4?
Yes. The limits are attached to the child’s account and apply when that account is used on either PS5 or PS4.
What is the difference between Playtime Duration and Playable Hours?
Playable Hours define when play is permitted during the day. Playtime Duration defines how much of that day’s allowed playtime the child may use. Both can be configured for each day.
What happens when the child reaches the limit?
The child receives an on-screen reminder as the end approaches. At the limit, Notify Only displays a notice, while Log Out signs the child out. A child can request more time, but an authorized adult must approve any change.
Why is a new limit not working in the game already open?
Have the child sign out of the PlayStation account and sign back in. PlayStation recommends this refresh after parental-control changes made while the child is playing.
Can I change only today’s playtime?
Yes. A family manager, parent or guardian can change the current day’s playtime on the PS5 or through the PlayStation Family app, which is useful for a one-off exception.
Can playtime controls be managed from a phone or browser?
Yes. PlayStation documents management through Account Management on the web and through the PlayStation Family app, using the same family-manager or appointed-parent permissions.
What should I check if the limit triggers at the wrong hour?
Check the child account’s time zone, the selected day, the Playable Hours window and the Playtime Duration. Correct the settings, save again, and refresh the child’s session if necessary.
The Bottom Line
To limit a child’s PS5 playtime, use the family manager or an appointed parent/guardian account, select the child under Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management, verify the time zone, configure each day’s restriction, duration, playable hours and end action, and save. The account-based rule follows the child to PS4, and a sign-out/sign-in refresh may be needed after changes made during gameplay.
