The most reliable setup uses two layers: supervise the child’s Google Account with Google Family Link, then add a separate Android user profile if the tablet supports multiple users. Family Link controls the child account and supported activity; a user profile keeps the child’s files, apps, and settings separate from an adult’s space. They solve different problems and can be used together.

Start by creating or supervising the child’s Google Account, sign that account into the tablet, and configure controls in the Family Link app. Add a separate profile only after confirming that the tablet supports multiple users, and protect every adult profile with a PIN or password.

Decide which kind of child setup you need

Family Link supervision and a separate Android user profile are complementary, not interchangeable. Family Link follows the child’s Google Account and applies supported rules to devices where that account is supervised. A user profile is a device-level boundary: each person gets a separate home screen, app data, files, and settings on the same tablet.

Option What it does Best for What it does not do
Family Link supervision Manages a child Google Account and supported activity, including app approvals, app blocking, permissions, screen time, bedtime, and Google Play maturity settings. Parents who need remote rules and account-level oversight. It does not create a separate Android workspace by itself, and controls vary by country, account, Android version, and device.
Separate Android user profile Keeps the child’s apps, files, and settings separate from other users on a tablet that supports multiple users. Shared family tablets where adults also need their own private workspace. It is not a substitute for Family Link supervision or its remote controls.
Both together Combines account supervision with device-level separation. A shared tablet used by a child and one or more adults. Requires a tablet with multi-user support and additional setup.

Google describes the profile feature this way: “Some Android tablets support multiple users, so you can share a device with family members while keeping your stuff separate.” Read the current Google Kids Space guidance on adding users for model-specific behavior.

Check eligibility before changing anything

Have the parent’s Google Account, the child’s Google Account (or the information needed to create one), and the tablet available. The parent must meet Google’s adult-age requirement—18 or the applicable adult age in the country—and Google says the parent and child must live in the same country for Family Link management. Family Link itself is not available in every country or region.

A child below the applicable country or region age threshold can have an account created by a parent through Family Link or during Android setup. An existing child account may be eligible for supervision where Google supports that process. Use Google’s instructions for creating a child Google Account to choose the correct path.

Device requirements are not one universal number. Google’s general supervision requirements identify Android 6.0 or newer for a child’s device, while its sign-in instructions state that an existing supervised account can be signed in on Android 5.1 or newer. Those statements apply to different capabilities and flows. Check the current Family Link requirements and the tablet manufacturer’s support page for the feature you need instead of assuming that any Android version supports every control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finally, look for multi-user support if you want a separate profile. Manufacturers control whether the feature exists and may rename the menus. A tablet can support Family Link supervision while offering no additional user profiles.

Create or supervise the child’s Google Account

Create a new account for a child

  1. Install or open the Family Link app on the parent’s phone and sign in with the parent’s Google Account.
  2. Choose the option to create an account for a child and enter the requested child information.
  3. Review Google’s consent and account settings, then finish account creation.
  4. Keep the child’s new email address and password available for the tablet sign-in. The child will need that account even if you later add a separate device profile.

You can also create the account while setting up a new Android tablet. When Android asks who will use the device, follow the child-account path and complete the parent verification prompts.

Add supervision to an existing child account

If the child already has a Google Account, start the supervision flow in Family Link and follow Google’s prompts for that account. Availability depends on the child’s age, country, account state, and Google’s supported transition rules. Do not create a second account simply because the existing account is already in use; first check whether Google offers “add supervision” for it.

Sign the child into the tablet

During first-time tablet setup

  1. Turn on the tablet and connect it to Wi-Fi or another internet connection.
  2. When Android asks for a Google Account, enter the child’s supervised account.
  3. Complete the parent or adult verification step when requested. This confirms that the supervising person meets Google’s adult requirement.
  4. Read the on-screen Family Link and device prompts, then finish Android setup.

The tablet may download account settings or wait briefly for an internet connection before all supervision options appear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a tablet that is already configured

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Passwords & accounts, or to Passwords, passkeys & autofill on devices that use that label. Some manufacturers place account management under a similarly named section.
  3. Choose Add account, select Google, and sign in with the child’s account.
  4. Verify the parent when Android or Family Link asks, then accept the supervision prompts.

Google notes that menu names and the exact flow vary by manufacturer. If the tablet refuses to add the account, follow the model’s instructions or update Android before trying again.

Understand what happens when another account is removed

When supervision is being added to an existing account, Google may require other Google Accounts to be removed from that tablet first. Removing an account removes its locally stored email, contacts, and settings from that device. It does not necessarily delete the Google Account itself, but make sure important data is synced or otherwise backed up before confirming the removal.

Google’s full device procedure is in Sign your child in on an Android device.

Configure parental controls in Family Link

Open Family Link on the parent’s device, select the child, and use the available controls. The list can differ by country, account, Android version, and tablet model. Some remote actions require the Family Link app and an internet connection on the child’s device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set daily limits and bedtime

  1. Open Family Link.
  2. Select the child.
  3. Open Screen time, then Time limits.
  4. Set a daily allowance, configure a bedtime schedule, or choose a device lock or unlock schedule where the tablet offers it.
  5. Save the schedule and allow the tablet time to reconnect and receive the change.

Daily limits and bedtime are separate decisions. A bedtime schedule can block use during overnight hours, while a daily limit controls the total permitted use for the day. Emergency or parent-approved use may still be possible through the options shown in your version of Family Link.

Approve, block, or limit apps

Family Link can show the child’s app activity and let a parent manage supported app downloads, block or allow installed apps, and respond to permission requests. Open the child’s settings in Family Link, choose the app-management area, and select an app to review its status. Changes may take several minutes or may wait until the tablet next connects to the internet.

Approval rules govern downloads and, where supported, purchases requested through Google Play. They do not turn every app into a supervised environment: an app can have its own account, browser, messaging, or content rules that Family Link does not control.

Set Google Play content restrictions

In the child’s Family Link controls, open the Google Play settings and choose maturity levels for apps, games, films, television, or books where those categories are offered. These filters limit what Google Play is allowed to show or install according to the selected rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google explicitly scopes this feature: restricted material can still appear in a search result or be opened through a direct link. Purchase approvals apply to transactions processed through Google Play’s billing system, not every payment made inside every service. Treat Play filters as a store control, not as an all-purpose web filter.

Review permissions and supported activity

Use Family Link’s app and device controls to review permissions and block or allow supported requests. You may also see app-usage information and, on compatible devices and in supported locations, a device-location option. Location and other remote functions require the Family Link app, a compatible device, and connectivity; they are not guaranteed on every tablet.

Google’s overview of available controls and their conditions is in Set up parental controls for your child and Get started with Family Link.

Add a separate child profile when the tablet supports multiple users

Use this section only if the tablet’s Android build offers multiple users. The names and placement of settings differ by manufacturer, and some tablets expose the option only after an administrator enables it.

When the child is the tablet’s primary user

  1. On the parent’s phone, open Family Link, select the child, and open Controls.
  2. Choose Signed-in devices, select the tablet, and enable Add/Remove user if that switch is available.
  3. On the tablet, open Settings > System > Users. A manufacturer may call this Multiple users or use another path.
  4. Turn on user switching, then choose the option to add a user.
  5. Sign in to the child account for the child’s profile. Google’s guidance specifies one child account per user profile.
  6. Return to Family Link and turn Add/Remove user off again after the profile exists.
  7. Set a PIN or password on every adult profile. Without that lock, the child may be able to switch into an adult profile and use its apps or data outside the child’s rules.

Disabling the add/remove switch after setup prevents casual creation of more profiles, but it does not replace an adult-profile lock. Test user switching yourself before handing over the tablet.

Pixel Tablet’s documented child-profile flow

A Pixel Tablet has a device-specific sequence. Set it up with the parent account, open System > Users, enable user switching, choose Add child, authenticate the parent, and review the parental-control prompts. Other tablet makers may not show an “Add child” button and instead use the general user-add flow.

Use Google Kids Space only if the tablet offers it

Google Kids Space is an optional child-oriented environment on some Android tablets. It can be used alongside account supervision, but it is not required for Family Link and is not available on every model. Treat it as an additional interface and content experience rather than as a replacement for the account and device controls described above.

Lock down and test the finished setup

Run through the following checks while you still have the tablet in your hands:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Switch to the child profile and confirm that the child’s account is shown under the tablet’s account settings.
  • From the parent’s Family Link app, confirm that the tablet appears under the child’s signed-in devices.
  • Request or install a test app and verify that the approval or blocking behavior matches your rule.
  • Set a short screen-time limit and check that the tablet receives it after reconnecting to the internet.
  • Try a Play Store item above the selected maturity level and confirm that the restriction is behaving as expected.
  • Switch users and confirm that every adult profile requires its PIN or password.
  • Check that the child cannot re-enable profile creation or remove the supervised account without adult authentication.

Testing matters because Family Link settings are delivered to the device and some changes are delayed until the tablet is online. A rule that is visible in the parent app may not have reached an offline tablet yet.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

The child account cannot be added

  • Confirm that the tablet is connected to the internet and that Android is updated as far as the manufacturer supports.
  • Check whether another Google Account must be removed before supervision can be added. Back up or sync local data first because removing an account removes its local email, contacts, and settings from the device.
  • Verify that the parent and child meet Google’s age and country requirements and that Family Link is available in your region.
  • Use the manufacturer’s account-menu instructions if the tablet uses labels different from Google’s examples.

There is no Users or Add user option

The tablet may not support multiple users, or the manufacturer may hide the setting. Family Link supervision can still work without a separate profile. Search the model’s official settings guide for “multiple users” and do not assume that a Kids Space option means full Android user-profile support.

The tablet keeps switching to an adult space

Set a PIN or password on each adult profile and test the lock from the child profile. Also turn off Add/Remove user in Family Link after the child profile is created. A profile without an adult lock is not a meaningful separation.

A new rule has not taken effect

Reconnect the tablet to the internet, reopen the relevant Family Link screen, and wait several minutes. Remote controls depend on connectivity and device support. If the option never appears, check the tablet’s Android version, country availability, and the current Family Link help page rather than assuming the setting is broken.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Know the boundaries of these controls

Family Link is account and device supervision, not a guarantee of complete internet safety. Google’s services generally are not all designed for children, and a supervised account does not make every service child-appropriate.

  • Country, account age, Android version, device model, and manufacturer software can change which controls are offered.
  • Google Play maturity filters do not prevent restricted material from appearing in Search or opening from a direct link.
  • Purchase approval applies to Google Play’s billing system, not necessarily to payments processed by another service.
  • App permissions, content controls, and safety tools supplied by an individual app may still be necessary.
  • A separate user profile protects files and settings from other profiles, but it does not automatically supervise the child account.

For the authoritative, model- and region-dependent details, consult Google’s parental-control setup, child sign-in, child-account creation, multi-user guidance, and Family Link getting-started page. Check the tablet maker’s documentation whenever its menus or multi-user behavior differ.
