Configure the server for TCP, set its listening port to 80, point DNS at the gateway’s public address, forward TCP 80 to the VPN host, and use that hostname and port in each client profile.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click OpenVPN, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
Port 80 is only a transport choice. OpenVPN still needs its certificate authority, server certificate and key, and a separate client certificate/key pair for every client. A domain name makes the endpoint easier to find; it does not replace TLS authentication.

What this setup looks like
An OpenVPN client first resolves your hostname, then opens a TCP connection to port 80 on the resulting public address. If the VPN server sits behind a router or cloud gateway, that gateway passes the connection to the server’s private address. OpenVPN performs its normal TLS handshake and certificate authentication, creates the tunnel, and then applies the routes and access rules defined by your VPN configuration.
- DNS:
vpn.example.compoints to the public IPv4 address, and optionally to an IPv6 address that is genuinely routed to the VPN endpoint. - Transport: both ends use TCP rather than the conventional UDP mode.
- Port: the public listener is TCP 80.
- Forwarding: a NAT router, cloud security group, perimeter firewall, and host firewall must all permit the same traffic path.
- Identity: the CA and certificates authenticate the VPN; DNS does not.
TCP 80 is valid, but it is often already occupied by a web server. Decide who owns the address-and-port combination before changing any service.

Requirements and decisions before you configure anything
A reachable endpoint
Use a server with a stable public address, or place it behind a gateway that can forward inbound connections. A private-only server with no inbound route cannot accept a connection merely because a DNS record exists. If the public address changes, arrange a controlled DNS update or dynamic-DNS mechanism and secure the account that can change the record.
OpenVPN and a complete certificate setup
Install OpenVPN using the package and service appropriate for your operating system. Create the normal certificate authority, a server certificate and private key, and a distinct client certificate and private key for each person or device. Do not copy one client private key to multiple users: individual credentials let you revoke one device without replacing every other profile.

You need access to the OpenVPN server, the public gateway or router, the DNS provider, and any cloud or perimeter firewall in front of them. Keep an existing management path available while you test. Moving a service to port 80 can make the server unreachable if you change firewall or NAT rules before confirming the replacement path.
Port ownership
Two independent processes cannot bind the same address and TCP port. Check whether an HTTP service, reverse proxy, control panel, or another daemon already listens on TCP 80. Plan to stop it, move it to another port or address, or deliberately use OpenVPN’s limited port-sharing feature.
Step-by-step: configure OpenVPN on TCP 80
1. Prepare the certificates and basic tunnel configuration
Finish the normal OpenVPN public-key setup first. The server needs the CA certificate, its own certificate and key, and the remaining tunnel, address-pool, routing, and cryptographic settings used by your deployment. Each client profile needs the CA certificate plus that client’s certificate and private key.
Keep private keys readable only by the account that needs them. Store the server key outside web roots and backups that are accessible to ordinary users. If a client device is lost, revoke that client certificate rather than sharing a replacement certificate with every user.

proto tcp-server
port 80
dev tun
# Keep the CA, server certificate/key, tunnel network,
# routes, and access-control directives used by your deployment.
OpenVPN documentation describes TCP mode with the proto tcp family of directives. Many current server configurations use proto tcp-server; use the spelling accepted by your installed version. Port 1194 is only the conventional UDP default, not a requirement.
Make sure no second port or protocol directive later in an included configuration overrides these values. After saving, restart or reload the OpenVPN service using your operating system’s service manager, then inspect its startup log. A bind error at this point almost always means another process already owns TCP 80 or the service lacks permission to bind it.
3. Publish the hostname in DNS
At the DNS provider, create an A record such as:
vpn.example.com A 203.0.113.20
Replace the example address with the gateway’s actual public IPv4 address. If you have working end-to-end IPv6, add an AAAA record pointing to the routed IPv6 address. Do not publish an AAAA record for an address that the firewall or server cannot accept; clients may prefer IPv6 and then fail before trying IPv4.
Confirm that the record is visible from an external network, not only from your internal DNS server. If your ISP or hosting provider changes the address, update the record promptly or use a dynamic-DNS updater. Protect the DNS account with strong authentication and monitor record changes, because changing the record changes where every client attempts to connect.
4. Forward TCP 80 through the gateway
When the VPN host has a private address, create an inbound NAT rule on the Internet-facing router or gateway:
- Protocol: TCP
- Public port: 80
- Destination address: the private address of the OpenVPN server
- Destination port: 80
Then permit the same flow in every security layer: cloud security groups, perimeter firewalls, network ACLs, and the server’s host firewall. A successful NAT rule is not enough if a later firewall drops the packet. Conversely, opening the host firewall does nothing when the public gateway has no forwarding rule.
Limit the rule to the required destination and protocol. Do not expose administrative interfaces on the same public listener. If the gateway itself terminates HTTP on port 80, either move that service, use another public address, or choose a different VPN port before enabling the forward.

5. Match the client profile
Every client profile must select the same TCP mode and point to the DNS name and port. A typical relevant section is:
client
dev tun
proto tcp-client
remote vpn.example.com 80
resolv-retry infinite
nobind
persist-key
persist-tun
# Include the CA certificate and this device's
# client certificate and private key as required.
Some OpenVPN versions use proto tcp on clients, and some profiles write the protocol on the remote line, for example remote vpn.example.com 80 tcp. Follow the syntax accepted by your installed client, but keep the hostname, port, and TCP selection consistent with the server.
Do not replace the client certificate and key with the server’s credentials. Verify that the profile contains the intended CA and that the certificate has not expired or been revoked.
6. Restart and test from outside the LAN
Test over a different network, such as a cellular connection or another site. Testing from inside the same LAN can succeed through local routing even when the public NAT rule is wrong.
- Resolve
vpn.example.comexternally and check that the returned address is the gateway you control. - Check that a TCP connection to port 80 reaches the public gateway. A generic TCP probe only proves that something accepted the socket; it does not prove that OpenVPN authenticated the client.
- Start the OpenVPN client and watch the server log for a TLS handshake, certificate validation, and a completed session.
- Confirm that the client receives a VPN address and the routes expected by your configuration.
- Test access to an internal resource that should be reachable through the tunnel, and verify that resources intentionally excluded by policy remain unreachable.
If the log never shows a handshake, troubleshoot DNS, NAT, and firewalls first. If the handshake completes but the client has no usable routes, the problem is in the tunnel addressing or routing policy rather than port 80.
Can a website and OpenVPN share TCP port 80?
The normal case: no
A web server and OpenVPN cannot independently listen on the same IP address and TCP port. If an HTTP daemon already owns 0.0.0.0:80, OpenVPN will fail to start on that address. Stopping the web service may also remove a production site, so do not treat a bind error as a reason to kill an unknown process.
Instead, choose one of these designs:
- Move the website to another TCP port and expose it there.
- Bind the website and OpenVPN to different local or public IP addresses, with each service owning port 80 on its own address.
- Use a different VPN port, commonly TCP 443 when restrictive networks permit only web-like traffic.
- Use OpenVPN port sharing only when its HTTP/HTTPS behavior fits your topology and you have tested it.
OpenVPN port sharing
OpenVPN provides a port-share option that can pass traffic it identifies as non-OpenVPN HTTP or HTTPS to another host and port. A simplified server-side example is:

port-share 127.0.0.1 8080
In this arrangement, OpenVPN owns the public listener on port 80. OpenVPN traffic stays with the VPN process; traffic handled as web traffic is forwarded to the service on the specified backend address and port. The OpenVPN manual says this mechanism is currently designed for HTTP/HTTPS, not as a general-purpose reverse proxy. It is therefore not a transparent solution for arbitrary TCP applications, and behavior must be tested with the exact web server, redirects, virtual hosts, IPv4/IPv6 paths, and monitoring used in your environment.

Port sharing also adds another failure point. A website can appear down because the backend is stopped even though OpenVPN is healthy, or VPN startup can fail if the sharing configuration is invalid. Keep the website’s logs and health checks separate from the VPN logs.
TCP 80, TCP 443, or UDP 1194?
OpenVPN’s conventional default is UDP 1194, and the supported port range is 1 through 65535. The right choice depends on reachability, existing services, and transport behavior rather than on the number alone.
| Choice | Where it helps | Costs and conflicts |
|---|---|---|
| UDP 1194 | Normal OpenVPN deployments where the network permits the default-style UDP traffic; avoids TCP-over-TCP behavior. | Some restrictive networks block unfamiliar UDP ports. It is the conventional default, not a mandatory setting. |
| TCP 80 | Networks that permit plain HTTP port 80 while blocking other ports. | Frequently occupied by web servers; may require moving a site or using port sharing. TCP can introduce head-of-line blocking and TCP-over-TCP inefficiency. Port 80 does not make the VPN an HTTP service. |
| TCP 443 | Networks that allow the standard HTTPS port; OpenVPN’s firewall guidance commonly recommends it as a restrictive-network fallback. | Often already used by HTTPS. It still has TCP-over-TCP behavior and may require a separate address or deliberate sharing design. |
Use UDP where policy allows it. Select TCP 80 only when its reachability advantage outweighs the web-service conflict. If a network allows common web ports but blocks port 80, TCP 443 is usually the more practical fallback; neither choice removes the need for certificate authentication and correct forwarding.

Do not confuse obscurity with authentication
Putting OpenVPN on a familiar port can make a connection possible through a restrictive firewall, but it does not hide the service or make it a web server. The tunnel still needs certificate-based TLS authentication. Keep the CA private, protect server and client private keys, and revoke credentials when a device or user should lose access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMinimize exposed services
Permit only the selected TCP port from the public side and keep management interfaces on a separate, restricted path. Do not place an administrative panel, SSH service, or database on the same public address and port through an improvised forwarding rule. Apply least-privilege routes and firewall rules inside the VPN as well as at the perimeter.
Patch the whole endpoint
Update OpenVPN and the host operating system through your normal change process. Review service startup after updates because a package change can alter the accepted protocol directive, certificate paths, or service unit. Back up configuration and revocation data securely, but never put private keys in an unprotected configuration archive.

Monitor DNS and certificates
Record the intended A and AAAA values, certificate expiration dates, and the public port-forwarding rule. Alert on unexpected DNS changes and certificate expiry. A stale A record can send clients to an old host; an incorrect AAAA record can make only some networks fail; an expired certificate can look like a port or firewall problem to the end user.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The hostname does not resolve
Check the record name, record type, and current public address from an external resolver. Remove an AAAA record until IPv6 routing and firewall rules are complete. If the address changed, update the record or repair the dynamic-DNS updater.

The connection times out
A timeout usually means the packet is being dropped before OpenVPN can answer. Verify the gateway’s TCP 80 forward, cloud security-group rules, perimeter ACLs, and host firewall. Confirm that the gateway has a route to the server’s private address and that the server is listening on the expected interface.
The connection is refused immediately
A refusal indicates that a reachable device rejected the socket. Check whether OpenVPN is running and whether another process owns port 80. Inspect the service log for a bind failure, then resolve the address-and-port conflict rather than repeatedly restarting the service.
A web page appears instead of a VPN handshake
You are probably reaching an HTTP service on port 80, not the OpenVPN listener. Verify the public IP, NAT destination, and port ownership. If port sharing is intentional, confirm that the client is using an OpenVPN profile and that the web backend is the service configured by port-share.
The TCP connection opens but TLS authentication fails
Check that the client has the correct CA, its own unexpired certificate and private key, and a clock set closely enough for certificate validation. Confirm that the server certificate and key match and that the client certificate has not been revoked. A domain name in the remote line does not repair a certificate or key mismatch.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The handshake succeeds but internal resources do not work
Review the tunnel address pool, pushed routes, server-side forwarding, and internal firewall policy. Confirm that the client actually received the expected VPN address and routes. Port 80 only gets the encrypted session to the server; it does not automatically create routes to private networks.
Quick Recap
Completion checklist
- Server configuration uses the TCP server directive and
port 80. - The CA, server certificate/key, and per-client certificate/key pairs are present and protected.
- The A record points to the current public IPv4 address; an AAAA record exists only when IPv6 is fully routed.
- TCP 80 is forwarded from the public gateway to the private VPN host and permitted by every firewall layer.
- No unintended web or administrative service owns the same address-and-port combination.
- Each client profile uses the hostname, port 80, matching TCP syntax, and that device’s credentials.
- An external test reaches a TLS handshake, assigns a VPN address, installs the expected routes, and passes an authorized internal-resource test.
- DNS credentials, private keys, certificates, logs, and update procedures are covered by ongoing operational controls.
