To switch scenes manually in OBS, assign a shortcut to each scene under Settings → Hotkeys. To rotate scenes on a repeating timer without an operator, use the Advanced Scene Switcher plugin and check its current instructions for your OBS version; OBS’s built-in Automatic Scene Switcher is for matching active application window titles, not general timed rotation. Build and test the stream before leaving it unattended: local OBS still depends on your computer and internet connection.
What scene switching does—and what it does not do
An OBS scene is a visual and audio arrangement for the broadcast; sources can include images and audio inputs. Switching scenes changes the on-screen state, such as moving from a music visual to a break card. It does not itself schedule songs, provide music rights, or keep a local broadcast running if the computer or connection fails. OBS’s Sources Guide describes how scenes and sources make up the output layout.

There are two distinct switching needs: an operator can press a hotkey when a change is needed, or automation can advance scenes on a timer. Choose based on whether someone will be monitoring and operating the stream.
Plan a small set of scenes
Start with the states viewers need, rather than creating many nearly identical layouts. A practical starting set for a music stream is:
#1 Best Overall
- 15 Customizable LCD Keys: instantly control your apps, tools and platforms.
- One-Touch Operation: trigger single or multiple actions, launch social posts, adjust audio, mute mic, turn on lights, and much more.
- Visual Feedback: know that your command has been executed.
- Powerful Plugins: Elgato 4KCU, OBS, Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, Discord, Spotify, Philips Hue, and many more.
- Hotkey Actions: streamline your film editing, music production, photography workflow, etc.
- Main music visual: the image or other visual that accompanies the music.
- Break or standby: a deliberate screen for planned pauses or temporary interruptions.
- Return or recovery: a known layout to use after maintenance or an interruption.
These are examples, not a required OBS template. In each scene, add the relevant image and audio sources, arrange them in the intended order, and check that each source is visible. Preview every scene so you catch missing media or unintended overlays before going live.
Choose a switching method
| Method | Trigger | Best fit | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scene hotkeys | An operator presses a configured shortcut. | A person is available to change scenes. | OBS documents hotkeys for switching to a specific scene. OBS Studio Overview Guide. |
| Built-in Automatic Scene Switcher | An active application window title matches a rule. | Changing scenes based on which desktop application is active. | OBS community guidance describes this as window-title matching, not a general repeating timer. OBS community discussion. |
| Advanced Scene Switcher plugin | A configured timer or sequence. | A repeating visual rotation without an operator. | OBS community guidance points to this plugin for timer-based sequences. Check the plugin’s current documentation for your installed OBS version and test before going live. OBS community discussion. |
Set up manual scene hotkeys
- Name and build the scenes. Add the visual and audio sources for each state and confirm them in the preview.
- Open Settings → Hotkeys. Find each named scene’s Switch to action and assign a distinct keyboard shortcut. OBS lists switching to a specific scene as an available hotkey action in its overview guide.
- Test every shortcut before going live. Press each one while watching the OBS preview and confirm that it selects the intended scene. Avoid shortcuts that are likely to be triggered accidentally during normal computer use.
A programmable macro keypad is optional. If its software can send the same keyboard shortcuts, it may provide physical buttons for the hotkeys; OBS does not require a keypad, and compatibility for any particular device is not established.

Set up timed scene rotation
If the stream should change scenes every few minutes without an operator, use a timer or sequence in the Advanced Scene Switcher plugin rather than assuming the built-in Automatic Scene Switcher provides that behavior. Community guidance distinguishes the built-in switcher’s active-window matching from the plugin’s use for timed switching. Plugin interfaces and compatibility can change, so follow the current instructions for the plugin version and your installed OBS version.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Install and configure the plugin using its current documentation for your OBS version.
- Create a short test sequence using the scenes you intend to rotate, with the intervals you want.
- Run the sequence while not live and watch the preview through a complete cycle. Check both the visual transition and audio continuity.
- Only enable the sequence for the broadcast after confirming it repeats as intended and does not select an unintended scene.
Do not confuse a timer-based sequence with switching based on which desktop application is active. The latter is the described role of the built-in Automatic Scene Switcher. OBS community guidance

Choose transitions and preview safely
OBS includes Fade and Cut transitions from first launch, according to the OBS Studio Overview Guide. Pick the transition that fits the visual and set an appropriate duration where applicable. Preview changes before they reach viewers.
In Studio Mode, the editable scene appears in the left preview pane and the live scene in the right pane. Check the preview, then use the transition control when you are ready to put that scene on air. This is especially useful for manually controlled broadcasts, where it lets you inspect a change before committing it.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Check channel eligibility and activation. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable streaming ahead of the planned launch. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the stream URL and key from YouTube. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance explains these settings. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not put it in a scene, show it on stream, or expose it in a screenshot.
- Enter the destination details in OBS. In OBS stream settings, select the YouTube destination and enter the URL and key as directed by the current YouTube and OBS interfaces. Confirm the intended destination before starting the encoder.
- Check YouTube’s live controls. Review the stream’s Live Control Room settings, including auto-start or auto-stop if you use them, so their behavior matches how you plan to start and end the broadcast. The available settings are described in YouTube’s stream settings help.
Check music rights and channel rules
Use only music you have the right to broadcast on YouTube. The fact that a track is Indian music, devotional music, or available online does not establish permission to stream it. Confirm the rights for the specific recordings and the intended use; this setup guide does not determine the legal status of any track or provide an India-specific legal conclusion.
Scene changes do not resolve copyright or reused-content issues. Review the current YouTube policies that apply to your channel and content before building a continuous stream around recordings or visuals you did not create or license.

Test the full broadcast before leaving it unattended
- Run a test stream, using an unlisted test if appropriate for your channel and launch plan.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and confirm the watch page displays the intended image.
- Listen to the stream audio, not just the OBS meters, and verify that it is audible and continuous.
- Observe at least one scene change in the YouTube feed. Confirm that the intended visual appears and that audio behaves as expected.
- Monitor the stream while testing. YouTube recommends testing, checking the preview, and monitoring audio and video quality in its live streaming tips.
A 24/7 broadcast from local OBS requires the computer and network to remain capable. OBS says performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; its system requirements guidance recommends using the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point. OBS also documents automatic reconnect as an advanced setting, but reconnect is not a guarantee that every failure will recover or that a stream will stay online indefinitely. Check OBS’s overview guide and test recovery behavior rather than relying on it without monitoring.
Troubleshoot common scene-switching problems
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A hotkey does nothing or selects the wrong scene. | The shortcut may not be assigned to the intended scene’s Switch to action, or may conflict with another shortcut. | Return to Settings → Hotkeys, review the assignment, choose a distinct shortcut, and test it in the preview. |
| The built-in Automatic Scene Switcher does not rotate scenes on a timer. | It is being used for a different trigger: active application window titles. | For a repeating timer or sequence, consult the Advanced Scene Switcher’s current instructions and test the configured sequence while not live. |
| The preview is blank or a visual is missing. | A source may be missing, hidden, or not arranged as intended in that scene. | Open the scene, inspect its source list and visibility, and preview it before sending it live. |
| The scene changes, but the audio is absent or unexpected. | The scene’s audio sources or their visibility may not match the intended layout. | Inspect the relevant sources and listen to a test stream from YouTube, not only the OBS preview or meters. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS feed. | The stream destination, URL, key, or channel activation may need attention. | Verify the destination details in OBS against YouTube Live Control Room, keep the key private, and allow for the up-to-24-hour first-time activation window YouTube describes. |
| The local stream stops or becomes unstable. | Computer workload, encoding settings, network conditions, or a failure outside OBS may be involved. | Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, reduce workload if needed, monitor the test feed, and do not treat automatic reconnect as guaranteed recovery. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded-video stream, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It streams uploaded video, not a live camera feed; scene switching in OBS and cloud playback are different workflows.
