You can run OBS Studio on an OVHcloud VPS and send its encoder output to YouTube Live, but first verify the server can provide the graphics, display session, processing capacity and outbound bandwidth OBS needs. A basic headless VPS should not be assumed to meet OBS’s Linux requirements. The Hindi-language focus does not change YouTube’s encoder setup: create a scene, configure the YouTube stream URL and private stream key, choose sustainable output settings, then test the complete path before going public.
Can I run OBS on a Linux VPS and stream to YouTube?
Yes, if the VPS and its Linux environment can run OBS and sustain the chosen encoding workload. OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X Window System or Wayland for Linux/Unix. Meeting those baseline requirements does not guarantee that a machine can encode a particular resolution, frame rate, encoder and scene complexity smoothly. See the OBS system requirements.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not assume a minimal, headless VPS provides a usable graphics environment. The available evidence does not establish which current OVHcloud plans, regions or images meet OBS’s needs, or which remote-desktop or virtual-display arrangement is supported on a particular plan. Verify these details with OVHcloud for the plan and region you intend to use before purchasing or configuring it.
Check these requirements before choosing a plan
- Graphics and display: Confirm OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics and a workable X11 or Wayland session for OBS.
- Encoding capacity: Check that the CPU or available encoder can sustain your target resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Compatibility alone is not a performance guarantee.
- Outbound bandwidth: Confirm sustained upload capacity with headroom beyond the stream’s total bitrate.
- Region and latency: Consider the server region and the path to YouTube ingestion, and verify the plan’s actual network details.
- Operating system: Make sure the chosen Linux image is supported by the OBS installation instructions you will follow.
Confirm YouTube Live eligibility
Before installing or configuring the encoder, check that the channel can go live. YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guidance says channels need verification, must not have a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and streamers must be at least 16. Check the channel’s current status in YouTube Studio because eligibility and restrictions apply to the account, not the VPS.

Install OBS on the VPS’s Linux distribution
Use the official OBS Linux installation guide for the exact distribution and release installed on the VPS. OBS documents a PPA and apt route for Ubuntu; package instructions can change, so follow the page’s current instructions for your actual Ubuntu release rather than copying commands intended for another version. For a different distribution, use its corresponding instructions. This guide does not establish that OBS has been tested on any particular OVHcloud image.
If the server has no graphical session, you will need a suitable way to provide one before using OBS’s graphical interface. The right remote-desktop or virtual-display configuration depends on the plan and Linux image; verify compatibility rather than treating a generic setup command as an OVHcloud-supported configuration.

Create an OBS scene and verify its sources
- Open OBS in the server’s graphical session. Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard and let it account for the available hardware and network, then review its proposed output settings. The wizard can help adapt configuration but does not confirm that an OVHcloud plan meets a particular requirement.
- Create a scene. Add only the sources needed for the programme. OBS documents display and window capture on Linux, as well as video capture devices such as webcams and capture cards; see the OBS Quick Start Guide.
- Check audio before streaming. Select the intended audio source and confirm that the OBS mixer meters respond. Listen to a test recording or preview for intelligibility, clipping and unwanted noise. For speech-led Hindi programming, clear speech is a production priority, not a special YouTube language preset.
- Confirm every source is actually available to the VPS. OBS can encode only sources its session can access. A camera or microphone attached to your local computer does not appear automatically on a remote server; arrange a way to deliver that feed to the VPS, or use sources already accessible there.
- Test representative material. Include the motion, transitions and sound expected in the actual programme so you can judge the workload and output before a public broadcast.
A USB capture card is optional if you need to bring an HDMI camera or other HDMI source into OBS. OBS lists capture cards as a possible video-capture source, but that does not establish compatibility for a particular model. A capture card is not needed when the VPS receives an already available media or network source.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or select the broadcast: Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and set up or select the live stream.
- Copy the ingest details: Obtain the stream URL and stream key shown for the broadcast. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions explain encrypted ingestion; reveal and use the RTMPS URL when configuring a secure connection.
- Enter the details in OBS: Open OBS’s stream settings, choose the service or custom-server option appropriate to the available YouTube setup, and enter the server URL and stream key. Labels can vary by OBS version.
- Protect the key: Treat the stream key like a password. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that broadcast. Do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or share it in a public support request.
- Start a test feed: Start streaming from OBS and confirm that the signal appears in the Live Control Room preview before making the broadcast public.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Its encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and the H.264, H.265 and AV1 video codecs. Choose the format supported by your encoder configuration and follow YouTube’s current guidance for that codec.
Choose sustainable resolution, bitrate and audio settings
Use YouTube’s current encoder table for the resolution, frame rate and codec you actually intend to send. Do not copy one bitrate across every stream: the recommended rate varies with the output. For example, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists 10 Mbps recommended and 5 Mbps minimum for H.264 at 1080p30, and 4 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 720p30. These are platform recommendations, not evidence that a particular OVHcloud VPS or network can sustain either rate.
- Rate control: YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps; choose a rate the VPS can encode reliably.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. For stereo audio, its advanced settings recommend 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
- Colour: YouTube lists Rec. 709 for SDR.
Those values are YouTube encoder guidance, not a Hindi-specific preset. For a speech-led channel, prioritize intelligible dialogue and choose picture settings that the server can deliver consistently. Consult the linked encoder table for the full, current values for your selected codec and output format.

Run a test and monitor stream health
- Make the first run private or unlisted. Use the actual scene and representative movement and audio rather than a static placeholder.
- Check both previews. Confirm that the OBS preview looks and sounds right, then inspect the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators.
- Look for instability. Watch for dropped frames, interruptions, distorted or unintelligible audio and a feed that fails to appear at YouTube. If the test is unstable, lower the output workload or bitrate and retest; verify the VPS’s encoding and network capacity rather than assuming the stream key is the cause.
- Leave network headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend keeping total stream bitrate within roughly 80% of available upload bandwidth—about 20% headroom. Apply that to the server’s sustained outbound capacity, not just a brief peak reading.
- Repeat after meaningful changes. Retest after changing the scene, output settings, server configuration or network path, and monitor the Live Control Room when the channel is live.
The OBS Project’s Quick Start Guide strongly encourages running a test for a few minutes before a first stream or recording. That is especially useful when the encoder and YouTube ingestion are separated from your usual local production setup.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
| Symptom | What to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| OBS will not launch or cannot use its display | Whether the Linux session has the required graphics capability and X11 or Wayland display arrangement | Verify the plan and image requirements; configure a suitable graphical session for that environment before troubleshooting stream settings. |
| OBS launches, but encoding or output is unstable | Selected resolution, frame rate, encoder, scene complexity and sustained VPS capacity | Reduce the output workload, simplify the scene, use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, and run another test. |
| YouTube receives no feed | That the broadcast is selected, the URL and key match it, and the RTMPS URL is used when encrypted ingestion is intended | Re-copy the details from the Live Control Room, update OBS, and start a fresh test. Keep the key private. |
| Feed appears but drops frames or loses health | Whether the total bitrate leaves YouTube’s recommended upload headroom and whether the server can sustain the encoding load | Lower bitrate or output settings as appropriate, verify sustained outbound capacity, and retest while watching stream health. |
| Camera or microphone is missing | Whether that device is available to the remote OBS session | Connect an accessible source or arrange a feed from the local production equipment to the VPS; local hardware is not automatically visible remotely. |
| Video works but speech is hard to understand | OBS mixer activity, selected audio source, level, clipping, noise and monitoring | Correct the source or levels and test again with representative speech before going public. |
Keep the stream running without a home computer
A VPS-hosted OBS setup can keep encoding away from your desktop, but you still need a VPS that meets the graphics, display, processing and network requirements, plus a workable source path and ongoing server configuration. If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative to try first: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, with any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot and a free first day.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload your recording or build a playlist.
- Add the YouTube stream key once.
- Go live: StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Every quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed as uploaded at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos and streams to YouTube, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo or its pricing and plan details, then start your free day.

Costs and practical trade-offs
Compare the full cost and effort of a VPS setup, not only the server’s listed price. The chosen plan must satisfy the graphics and display requirements and sustain both encoding and upload; the available evidence does not establish which current OVHcloud plan does so or what it costs. You may also need to account for the work of configuring and maintaining a graphical session and arranging remote sources. Verify current plan and network details directly with OVHcloud before committing.
