For a low-end PC, begin with OBS at 720p and 30 frames per second, a supported hardware encoder if your computer has one, and a bitrate your own upload connection can sustain. If the PC or connection struggles, step down to 480p30 or 360p30. These are starting points, not guarantees: a continuous stream depends on your computer, power, local network, ISP route and YouTube’s handling of the broadcast.
Before you configure OBS: check YouTube access and prepare a test
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; its general live-streaming guidance also sets a minimum age of 16. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming guide.
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS when you configure its stream service. Treat the key like a password: do not share it, include it in a screenshot or show it on stream.
- Prepare a private or unlisted test using the same PC, ISP connection and room where you intend to broadcast. Check OBS’s dropped-frame counter and YouTube’s stream health, and test representative audio and motion before relying on a long session. YouTube’s setup guidance recommends preparing the encoder and checking the preview; see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
There is no India-wide upload-speed figure in the official OBS and YouTube guidance cited here. Your connection’s measured, sustained performance to the stream matters more than a national target or a brief speed-test peak.
Choose a low-load resolution and frame rate
Run Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard in OBS as an initial estimate, then test the result. OBS warns that a computer meeting basic system requirements may still be unable to stream; workload depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. See OBS system requirements.

In Settings → Video, set Output (Scaled) Resolution to control the stream’s output. It can be lower than Base (Canvas) Resolution, which describes your working canvas and sources. Lowering the canvas instead can require resizing and repositioning sources. OBS explains the distinction in its overview guide.

The bitrate figures are YouTube’s current displayed H.264 recommendations, not a promise about what your ISP can sustain. Resolution, frame rate and scene complexity affect PC load; OBS specifically suggests dropping from 60 fps to 30 fps when needed. If 720p30 overloads your machine or connection, test a lower output rather than insisting on 720p. Select an encoder and set the bitrate
Use hardware encoding if your PC supports it well
A supported hardware encoder can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. The result depends on the hardware generation and the actual workload; older implementations may produce lower quality at the same bitrate. OBS lists NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV and Apple VideoToolbox, with hardware-specific compatibility details in its hardware encoding guide. Do not assume a particular encoder is available or better on an unspecified PC; test the encoder options OBS offers on your system.

Set a bitrate your upload can hold
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance suggests using around 75% of total upload speed as a starting video bitrate. That is a troubleshooting starting point, not an India-specific network rule or a guarantee. First measure your upload connection, then test the stream at the intended bitrate. Leave headroom for variation and other network use; lower the bitrate if the stream drops frames or cannot keep up. The 720p30 H.264 recommendation of 3 Mbps and the 480p30/360p30 recommendations of 4 Mbps are YouTube’s encoder guidance, while OBS’s 75% figure is a separate connection-sizing suggestion. Configure OBS output for YouTube
For a broadly compatible setup, use H.264 video, AAC audio and RTMPS ingestion. YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 support, but use them only if your installed encoder and workflow support them and your test succeeds. In OBS’s output settings, use constant bitrate (CBR) and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its stereo audio guidance recommends 128 Kbps. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for the complete codec-specific details.
RTMPS encrypts the feed sent to Google’s servers and is YouTube’s recommended protocol. Enter the stream URL and key from the Live Control Room in OBS’s stream configuration. Do not paste the key into public notes, messages or screenshots.

Reduce overload and dropped frames
Watch the OBS status bar and YouTube’s stream-health indicator during the test. The symptom helps identify whether to start with PC performance or the network.
If OBS says “encoding overloaded” or the output is choppy
- Lower the output resolution or frame rate; try 30 fps instead of 60.
- Simplify scenes and scene collections, and reduce the number or resolution of demanding sources.
- Close GPU-heavy applications. If you are streaming a game, cap its frame rate to free resources for OBS.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator.
These steps address rendering or encoding load, as described in OBS encoding performance troubleshooting. A faster internet connection alone will not resolve a PC that cannot render or encode the selected output.
If OBS shows “dropped frames”
- Reduce the video bitrate and test again.
- Use Ethernet if practical. OBS identifies Wi-Fi instability as a possible cause and recommends a wired connection.
- If OBS offers another ingest server, test it; also check relevant network software and drivers.
- Test from the exact location and connection intended for the broadcast, since local Wi-Fi conditions and ISP routing can vary.
Dropped frames point to a connection-to-ingest problem, such as an unstable link or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Ethernet can improve the local link’s stability, but it cannot fix insufficient ISP upload capacity or congestion farther upstream. Follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps rather than treating every drop as an OBS encoding fault.

Plan for a long-running broadcast
A successful test does not establish that one OBS process or stream will run indefinitely. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guidance does not promise automatic archiving for a stream lasting longer than 12 hours. Plan a controlled restart schedule if needed, monitor stream health, and protect the PC and network connection from interruptions. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
If you need a local recording as a backup, test that separately before the broadcast. Recording can use additional storage and encoder resources, and its effect on a particular low-end PC is not established here. Do not assume that enabling it is cost-free for performance.

Does 720p30 always need less upload speed than 480p30 on YouTube?
Not according to YouTube’s listed H.264 recommendations: it lists 3 Mbps for 720p30 and 4 Mbps for 480p30. Treat those as platform recommendations and test a bitrate your own connection can sustain.
Can I use the same OBS stream key after restarting?
The setup instructions have you copy the stream key from YouTube Studio into OBS, but the cited guidance does not establish a universal key lifetime or reuse rule. Check the current Live Control Room settings for your stream.
Will YouTube archive a continuous stream longer than 12 hours?
YouTube’s cited guidance guarantees automatic archiving only for streams under 12 hours; it does not establish automatic archiving for longer broadcasts.
