To stream a church sermon from OBS to YouTube, connect the church’s camera and sound feed to a Windows PC, configure a modest video bitrate that the venue’s internet can sustain, then send OBS’s output to a YouTube Live event. For a stream intended to stay on around the clock, you also need to plan for internet and power interruptions—and for YouTube’s limit on reliably archiving long broadcasts. Test the whole path at the church before depending on it.
Before you start: check the PC, channel and equipment
Confirm Windows and encoding capacity
Install OBS Studio for Windows from the OBS Project’s official source. OBS lists Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as basic requirements. Meeting those requirements does not guarantee that the PC can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate while handling your camera, scenes and other software. Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard for a starting profile, then test the actual setup.

Enable YouTube Live in advance
In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live. If the church channel has never streamed before, YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the day of the service. Check that the channel can stream and decide which trusted people need access. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in a desktop capture or share it publicly.
Identify the church’s audio and video connections
Use the camera and mixer the church already has if they provide compatible signals to the PC. OBS can take video from a webcam or a capture-card input and audio from an available input device. The exact adapter or interface depends on the camera output, mixer output and PC connections; those details need to be checked at the venue. New USB microphones, interfaces, webcams or capture cards are conditional options, not required purchases.

Build a simple OBS scene and verify the sermon audio
- Create one scene. In OBS, add a scene for the service before adding sources. A simple layout is easier to troubleshoot than a scene full of animated effects.
- Add the camera. In the scene’s Sources panel, select + → Video Capture Device, then choose the webcam or capture-card input that carries the church camera. Confirm the picture appears in the preview.
- Add the sound feed. Add the mixer/board feed or intended microphone as an audio input source. Speak into the pulpit microphone and check that the relevant meter moves in OBS’s Audio Mixer. A moving meter confirms signal is reaching OBS; it does not by itself confirm that the stream sounds clean.
- Add only useful graphics. A church name, sermon title, or still welcome/end screen can help viewers. Keep text readable and avoid unnecessary effects that add encoding load.
- Make a short local test recording. Listen to the recorded result on headphones. Check for low level, distortion, hum, echo, or a mismatch between the sound and the speaker’s lip movement. Correct the mixer output, selected device or levels before going live.
Sermon intelligibility matters more than extra graphics. YouTube identifies external audio/video equipment, including multiple microphones and cameras, as common encoder uses; OBS’s preview and meters are useful checks, but a recording or private test is how to hear what viewers will receive.
Choose OBS output settings from the church’s measured upload
Measure the connection at the venue
Run an upload speed test on the same connection and, as far as practical, at the time of day the church expects to stream. An ISP plan’s advertised rate or a test from home does not establish what is available to the encoder at the church. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% bandwidth headroom above the stream bitrate. Other people sharing the connection can reduce the available capacity.

Use a conservative resolution and frame rate
For a mostly static pulpit camera, 30 frames per second is a sensible starting point to test; 60 fps usually adds encoding and upload demands without much benefit for spoken-word footage. YouTube’s H.264 recommended ingest rates, according to Google / YouTube Help accessed in 2026, are:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Output profile | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular PC or connection can maintain them. Start with a profile that leaves the recommended headroom on the church’s measured, sustained upload. If it cannot, reduce the bitrate or output resolution and test again. Do not assume a speed is safe for every Indian venue: performance depends on the local ISP connection, network use and conditions during the service.

Set the encoder basics
For a straightforward OBS-to-YouTube setup, use H.264 video over RTMP or RTMPS and AAC audio. YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. Use these practical targets from its guidance:
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; YouTube recommends no more than 4 seconds.
- Audio: stereo, 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz in YouTube’s advanced recommendations.
- Colour: Rec. 709 for SDR video.
- Frame rate: YouTube lists up to 60 fps; choose a rate the PC and upload can sustain.
In OBS, open Settings → Output to configure the streaming encoder, rate control, bitrate and keyframe interval. Open Settings → Video to set the output resolution and frame rate. The exact encoder choices shown depend on the PC’s hardware and OBS setup. YouTube transcodes streams for viewing formats, so sending a higher-resolution stream is not necessary just to make it available on different devices.

Connect OBS to the YouTube event and test the public stream
- In YouTube Studio, go to Create → Go Live. In the Live Control Room, create a new event or reuse prior settings from the Stream workflow.
- Copy the event’s server URL and stream key. Keep them private.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if it is available as a service, or enter the provided server URL and stream key in the relevant fields.
- Apply the settings and start streaming from OBS. Wait for the Live Control Room preview and stream-health status, then follow the event’s current go-live flow. The exact confirmation steps can differ with the YouTube workflow being used.
- Before relying on the setup, check the stream from a separate device and network if possible. Verify the public watch page, sermon audio, camera movement, text readability and mobile playback. If you plan to keep an archive, confirm local recording too.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide encourages running a test for a few minutes rather than jumping straight into a first stream. A private or unlisted rehearsal is useful for checking the complete chain, but also verify the intended public event and viewing experience.

Reduce network interruptions
- Connect the PC to the router by Ethernet where practical. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable.
- Keep the stream bitrate within the measured upload capacity and leave headroom. If OBS reports dropped frames, the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the chosen bitrate; lower the bitrate and check the network, router and network drivers.
- If the issue persists after reducing demand, contact the ISP. OBS notes that dropped frames are typically a network problem rather than a fault in OBS itself.
Reduce encoding and power risks
- Keep the scene simple, close unnecessary GPU-intensive applications and lower output demands if the PC struggles. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance identifies GPU overload as a possible cause of encoding trouble.
- If the PC has a compatible hardware encoder, it may reduce CPU workload, but use the encoder that performs reliably on the actual machine and test its output quality.
- If mains interruptions are a concern, consider a UPS or suitable inverter/battery arrangement for the PC and networking equipment. Size it based on the combined equipment load and the backup time the church needs. A battery protecting only the PC will not preserve the connection if the modem or router loses power; a UPS also does not provide backup internet.
- Arrange for someone to watch stream health and the public stream during important broadcasts. If a second encoder is available, YouTube recommends testing encoder failover; otherwise, a person monitoring the single setup can spot problems sooner.
No PC, ISP plan or power backup can guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 feed. The church’s actual upload stability, hardware, power conditions and monitoring plan determine how resilient a local setup can be.

Will YouTube save a 24/7 sermon stream?
Do not rely on one continuous YouTube broadcast to produce a complete replay. Google / YouTube Help, accessed in 2026, says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but warns that if a stream exceeds 12 hours it may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends making a local archive.
If viewers need a replay of each service, record locally and monitor available disk space, or plan separate scheduled events/segments under 12 hours so each service is easier to find. A local recording protects the sermon archive if the online stream is not captured, but it still needs enough storage and a person responsible for checking it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to loop prepared sermon recordings continuously rather than broadcast a live camera and mixer feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option for a YouTube channel. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live; the cloud service loops the uploaded videos, so the church’s computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, so it is not a substitute for the OBS setup above when the congregation needs the current service live.
