First confirm that your channel can livestream, then connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream, configure a media source and audio, and test the stream before relying on it. Plan separately for a local recording: YouTube says a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Before you set up the stream
Check channel eligibility
YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance, accessed in 2026, says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. It also states that livestreamers must be at least 16. Check eligibility in YouTube Studio before configuring OBS: YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.

Confirm you have rights to everything in the playlist
You need the necessary rights for the videos, images and audio you broadcast, including music. YouTube’s terms require creators to hold the rights needed to use livestream content: YouTube Terms of Service. A video being available online does not by itself give you permission to rebroadcast it.

Check the PC and connection
OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic Windows requirements, but compatible hardware alone does not guarantee a machine can stream reliably. CPU and GPU load vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. See OBS system requirements and OBS guidance on hardware encoders.
Use a stable connection and leave upload capacity beyond the bitrate you choose. There is no single upload-speed target that fits every resolution, frame rate and network; test your actual connection and the stream itself. Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder stream and locate its server URL and stream key. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guide if you need the current Live Control Room flow.
- Copy the stream URL and key into OBS. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, then enter or paste the server URL and stream key if the selected connection method asks for them. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Reset it if it is exposed.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. When you start streaming in OBS, check the preview in the Live Control Room. If the broadcast is scheduled, use the preview to verify the correct feed before selecting Go live in YouTube Studio.
Build the looping playlist scene in OBS
Run the setup wizard
In OBS, choose Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard and follow the prompts. It helps select starting settings based on your PC and network; treat its result as a starting point, not proof that a 24/7 stream will remain stable. OBS recommends testing before a first broadcast: OBS Quick Start Guide.

Add and configure the playlist source
- Create a scene in the Scenes panel, then add a Media Source from the Sources panel.
- In the Media Source properties, select the video file you want to play. Enable Loop so the media source repeats when it reaches the end. If your OBS version offers a playlist field or playlist interface for the source, add the files in the order you want and enable looping there.
- Arrange the source in the canvas. Add only visuals you have rights to use, such as artwork or labels, and check that the source fits the canvas without unintended cropping or black bars.
- Play the source and watch the Audio Mixer. The meters should move when the video has sound. If they do not, check the media source audio settings and the selected desktop or audio devices; avoid sending duplicate audio from both the media source and desktop capture.
OBS menus and available playlist controls can differ by version. If you have multiple separate files and your version’s Media Source does not provide a playlist control, use a playlist-capable source method available in that OBS installation or prepare one continuous video file; test transitions and looping before broadcasting.
Choose output and video settings for your hardware
Review Settings → Output and Settings → Video. Choose an output resolution and frame rate your PC can encode and your upload connection can sustain. Higher resolution and 60 FPS increase the demands on encoding and bandwidth; 30 FPS may be a more practical starting point for a static or slow-moving playlist. For encoder settings, YouTube recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Set these in OBS’s output and streaming encoder options where available. YouTube’s guide covers its recommended encoder settings: YouTube live encoder settings.

Do not copy a bitrate value without matching it to your chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder and measured upload capacity. Run a speed test, allow headroom above the stream bitrate for network variation, then test the actual broadcast. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU workload by using specialized GPU components, while the best quality and performance depend on your specific system and settings.

- Start the playlist in OBS and confirm the intended video and audio appear in the preview.
- Start streaming, then check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicator. Watch for dropped frames, connection warnings, missing audio, black frames or a source that does not advance.
- Test with movement and audio representative of the real playlist, not just a still frame. Keep the test running for several minutes and check the connection remains stable.
- If you will record locally, start recording and verify that the file is being written and that the destination drive has enough free space for the planned recording period.
- In OBS, review Settings → Advanced for automatic reconnect options. Enable and test them if appropriate for your setup, but treat reconnect as a recovery aid rather than a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.
Plan for interruptions and YouTube archives
A 24/7 stream is not the same as a guaranteed 24/7 service
A Windows PC can stop streaming if OBS or the media source fails, the computer sleeps or reboots, power is lost, the network drops, or the recording drive fills. YouTube and OBS provide monitoring and recovery features, but they do not make a home PC and connection a certified high-availability broadcast system. Arrange someone or a monitoring process to check for a frozen playlist, a disconnected encoder, a full disk or a power interruption.
Do not rely on YouTube to archive a continuous broadcast
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. If you need a replay, schedule shorter live sessions and record locally as a backup. YouTube’s archive guidance is at Archive live streams.
