For the recommended setup, dock your Nintendo Switch 2, connect it to a TV, detach and pair the Joy-Con 2 controllers, then launch Nintendo Switch Sports and choose local play. The game also supports tabletop mode, but not handheld mode. Which controllers and how many players can join depend on the sport; Switch 2 Pro Controllers are not compatible.
Set up local play on one Nintendo Switch 2
- Choose a play style. Nintendo recommends TV mode for Nintendo Switch Sports. Connect the Switch 2 dock to your television and place the console in the dock. Nintendo’s TV-mode instructions explain the connection process.
- Detach the Joy-Con 2 controllers. Pair them wirelessly with the console. The supported controller arrangement varies by sport, so follow the game’s onscreen prompts when you select one.
- Launch the game and choose local play. Select the sport and follow its controller instructions. The number of people who can play at once varies by sport.
TV mode or tabletop mode?
| Mode | What you need | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| TV mode | Switch 2 dock, television, and detached wireless controllers | Nintendo’s recommended experience; the larger screen is easier for a group to watch. |
| Tabletop mode | Console out of the dock, built-in stand open on a flat surface, and detached controllers | Playing without a TV, if everyone can see the console screen. |
Nintendo describes tabletop mode as an option for multiplayer games, but specifically recommends TV mode for this game. The Switch 2 can also be used in handheld mode generally; Nintendo Switch Sports itself does not support handheld mode. See Nintendo’s TV and tabletop mode instructions and the game’s controller and play-style FAQ.

Which controllers work?
Nintendo lists compatible arrangements that include paired Joy-Con 2 controllers, original Joy-Con controllers, and single Joy-Con 2 or original Joy-Con configurations. Some sports use different arrangements, so check the prompts for the sport you choose. Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controllers and Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible with the game.
Using the Leg Strap for Soccer
The Soccer Leg-Strap mode requires an original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con. Joy-Con 2 controllers do not fit the Leg Strap for this use. On Switch 2, Nintendo says the strap can be used with Nintendo Switch Sports when an original Joy-Con is connected wirelessly; see Nintendo’s Switch accessory compatibility guidance.

Play with friends on multiple consoles using LAN
If your group has several consoles, Nintendo documents a wired LAN arrangement for up to four consoles, with two players on each console and up to eight players total. Each console needs a copy of the game, and the systems connect through the same wired router. These figures describe the LAN setup, not the general player limit for one console; single-console participation depends on the sport. Follow Nintendo’s LAN play instructions for the connection procedure.
