For the best sound from new headphones, start with a comfortable, secure fit, then pair them with your phone, computer, or other source. Listen at the default settings before trying optional app features or EQ, and keep the volume comfortable. Button sequences and available features vary by model.
1. Get the fit right before changing settings
Fit affects comfort, and with earbuds it also affects the acoustic seal. A loose seal can make audio seem thin and reduce isolation, so check the fit before assuming the headphones need an EQ adjustment.

Over-ear headphones
- Check that the left and right ear cups are on the correct ears.
- Adjust the sliders so the cushions cover your ears, and position the headband so it rests gently on top of your head.
- Make adjustments gently; Sony cautions owners not to force or twist the headset. See Sony’s guide to wearing headphones for fit and sound.
Earbuds
- Try the included tip sizes and choose a pair that feels stable and makes a secure seal without discomfort.
- If the earbuds sound thin or do not block unwanted sound well, check the seal before changing sound settings. JBL’s official fit guidance says, “Without a solid, tight fit the headphones will sound thin (lacking bass), not very loud, and will do a poor job of blocking out unwanted sounds.” Find fit and other product help in JBL Support.
If none of the included tips fits securely, replacement tips matched to your exact earbud model may help. Check compatibility before buying; fit guidance alone does not establish compatibility with a particular replacement tip.

2. Pair the headphones with your device
Put the headphones into pairing mode using the instructions for your exact model. Then open Bluetooth settings on the phone, computer, or TV, and select the headphone name. The general process is similar across devices, but the button sequence for pairing mode is model-specific.

- Check the included guide or the manufacturer’s official support page for the model-specific pairing steps.
- Enable Bluetooth on the source device and open its Bluetooth settings.
- Select the headphones from the available-device list and wait for the connection confirmation.
- Play audio and confirm that the headphones are selected as the output device.
Sony organizes its Bluetooth headphone pairing instructions by headphone type and source device. Bose’s pairing guidance also covers connecting its specified products through the device’s Bluetooth settings.
3. Decide whether the companion app is useful
An app is not automatically required to pair headphones. For the Bose products covered by Bose’s pairing guidance, owners can pair through the source device’s Bluetooth settings without the app. The app offers additional controls for those products, including EQ, CustomTune sound calibration, noise-cancellation and aware modes, touch-control customization, and software updates. Features depend on the model, so check the product’s compatibility before expecting any particular control.

Use the official app if you want a supported feature or update; otherwise, you can start with Bluetooth pairing alone. Noise-cancellation and aware or transparency modes, when available, are different listening choices: select the one that suits your surroundings and need to hear outside sounds.

Play a familiar, well-recorded track at a comfortable level before changing EQ or calibration settings. If your model offers sound adjustments, make small changes and listen again. Personal preference and headphone design differ, so there is no single EQ curve or preset established as best for every listener or model. If a change makes the sound tiring or unnatural, return to the default setting.

5. Keep listening volume comfortable
Listen at a comfortable, moderate volume. Bose’s safety material for Hearphones recommends moderate volume to help avoid hearing damage; it does not establish a universal numeric limit for all headphones. See Bose Hearphones safety and use instructions.

6. If there is no sound, check the connection first
- Confirm the headphones are connected to the intended phone, computer, or other source.
- Check that the source device is sending audio to the headphones rather than its speakers or another output device.
- If the problem remains, follow the official troubleshooting steps for your specific model. Pairing and reset procedures vary, so avoid trying a generic button combination.
