Centralize and protect records where practical, establish what normal activity looks like, and review the setup regularly. Monitoring can help reveal performance problems and suspicious activity; it does not guarantee that a breach will be prevented or replace an incident-response plan.
Decide what needs monitoring
Begin with the systems whose failure or misuse would disrupt your business or expose important information. Include both equipment you manage and services managed by an outside provider. For each item, note its owner and the business function that depends on it; that context helps determine which alerts matter and who should investigate them.

- Network equipment such as routers, firewalls, switches, and wireless access points.
- Servers, employee endpoints, and other connected devices that support business operations.
- Cloud services and applications, including externally managed systems that store business data or provide essential services.
- Dependencies such as internet access or remote connections that could interrupt work if they fail.
NIST’s small-business quick-start guide overview advises assessing computing technologies and external services for deviations from expected behavior. The practical starting point is therefore not to monitor every possible signal, but to identify which systems and dependencies matter to your business.

Choose useful signals and log sources
Enable logging and telemetry on the systems that can provide them. CISA suggests considering user activity, administrative actions, network traffic, application logins, and system events, and enabling logging on servers, firewalls, endpoints, and cloud services. What you can collect will vary with your equipment, services, and business risks.
#1 Best Overall
- (3) 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet ports, (1) RJ45 Serial and (1) SFP port
- Max power consumption: 13 Watts
- Desk, wall and rack mount options
- Internal PSU, fanless
Logging captures records of events; device telemetry can also show operational conditions such as availability or network performance. Together, they can help you investigate both service problems and activity that may warrant attention. CISA explains that logging can help establish normal behavior and reveal unusual activity: “Even small teams can set up logging to baseline normal system behavior and better detect unusual behavior that may indicate cyber threats.” See CISA’s Use Logging on Business Systems guidance.
Centralize and protect records
Where practical, send records to a central location so a reviewer does not have to check each device separately. Limit who can view or change them, monitor access to the logs, and store them securely. Choose a retention period according to your business policy and applicable contractual or regulatory requirements; CISA does not set one universal period for all small businesses.

Build a baseline and tune alerts
Start with alerts for events that are both meaningful and actionable, such as repeated failed logins or an unexpected increase in privileges. Establish what normal activity looks like for your business, then review unusual deviations and adjust alert rules when they produce too much noise or miss events you need to see. NIST identifies unusually sluggish networks and deviations from typical traffic flows as possible indicators of an incident, not proof that one has occurred.
Assign alert ownership and response steps
An alert is useful only if someone is responsible for reviewing it and knows what to do next. Write down who monitors notifications, who can investigate, when to contact an IT or service provider, and who coordinates business communications and continuity if an incident affects operations. CISA recommends establishing policies and procedures and designating incident-response contacts and roles.

- Coverage up to 2,000 sq. ft. for up to 25 devices
- Ultrafast AX3000 speeds up to 3Gbps with WiFi 6 technology for uninterrupted streaming, HD video gaming, and web conferencing
- This router does not include a built-in cable modem. A separate cable modem (with coax inputs) is required for internet service.
- Connects to your existing cable modem and replaces your WiFi router. Compatible with any internet service provider up to 1Gbps including cable, satellite, fiber, and DSL
- Plug in computers, game consoles, streaming players, and more with 4 x 1G Ethernet ports
Make escalation practical: specify how the reviewer reaches the next person, what information to preserve, and who is authorized to make decisions that could affect business operations. Monitoring helps inform response, but it is not itself a complete incident-response process.
Secure monitoring access and network connections
Protect SNMP monitoring
If you use SNMP to collect device information, configure SNMPv3 with authentication and encryption, and restrict access with access-control lists or equivalent controls. Avoid exposing management services publicly when they are not needed. CISA’s communications infrastructure hardening guidance supports these protections; confirm that your device and monitoring system support the configuration you intend to use.

- Convenient VLAN support. QoS for enterprise VoIP
- VPN server for secure communications. 10/100/1000Base-T

- Refer instruction manual for troubleshooting steps.
Reduce avoidable network exposure
Monitoring does not compensate for weak network controls. The FTC’s small-business cybersecurity guidance advises limiting devices connected to the business network, separating guest Wi-Fi, password-protecting the network, keeping connected software updated, and securing remote access.

Choose who operates monitoring
Self-managed monitoring can suit a business with staff who can configure the tools, review activity reliably, and respond to alerts. If internal capacity is insufficient, NIST’s small-business guidance recommends prioritizing engagement of a service provider to monitor computers and networks for suspicious activity. Compare the operating models against the responsibilities your business actually needs covered.

| Consideration | Self-managed | Provider-operated |
|---|---|---|
| Staff time and skills | Your team configures the system, reviews alerts, and handles investigation or escalation. | A provider performs agreed monitoring work; confirm what remains your team’s responsibility. |
| Coverage and response | Coverage depends on when your staff are available and how you arrange escalation. | Confirm coverage hours, alert triage, escalation times, and incident coordination in the service terms. |
| Systems covered | You select and maintain coverage for your devices and cloud services. | Verify that the provider supports the specific devices, applications, and cloud services you use. |
| Data access and custody | Your organization controls access and storage, subject to the tools and configuration you choose. | Review access controls, data handling, storage, and any relevant contract terms. |
| Operating cost | Account for staff time as well as any software or infrastructure costs. | Review the full service cost and contract scope rather than assuming monitoring includes incident response. |
Before choosing a provider, clarify who investigates alerts, who contacts you, what actions the provider may take, and how your business coordinates response. NIST published its Cybersecurity Framework 2.0: Small Business Quick-Start Guide on February 26, 2024.
Consider tools that fit the environment
CISA identifies Logging Made Easy as a no-cost option for collecting, storing, and reviewing logs. It also identifies Malcolm, a no-cost open-source network traffic analysis tool for operational technology and industrial control system (OT/ICS) contexts. These tools have different purposes; Malcolm should not be treated as a general-purpose recommendation for every small business. Check current capabilities and compatibility against your systems before adopting a tool. CISA’s logging guidance describes both options.
Review and improve the setup
Monitoring is an operating process, not a one-time software installation. Set a recurring review of whether important systems are still covered, logs are arriving, alerts reach the right person, and the response steps remain workable. Tune rules when normal business changes or the alert stream becomes unhelpful. Revisit ownership when staff, providers, systems, or business obligations change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe cited federal guidance is U.S.-focused. Businesses should also account for their own contractual and regulatory obligations when deciding what to monitor, who may access records, and how long to retain them.
