How to Set Up Multitasking on a Samsung Galaxy Foldable

On a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, open the phone to the inner display, launch the first app, then use Recents to choose Open in split screen view or Open in pop-up view. Split screen keeps two supported apps visible together; pop-up view puts one app in a movable, resizable window. The Taskbar can launch additional apps, and an App Pair can save a frequently used combination for one-tap reopening.

Exact menus and the number of windows depend on your model, country and One UI version. Samsung’s current Galaxy Z Fold8 guidance for India, written for One UI 9, describes two-way and three-way split views, while older Fold models and other regional software can show different layouts.

What multitasking on a Galaxy Foldable includes

Samsung calls its side-by-side and floating-window tools Multi window. They are designed for the large inner display, where two apps can remain usable at once instead of being repeatedly opened and closed. The main choices are different ways of arranging the same screen:

Mode What it does Best for
Split screen view Divides the inner display between two supported apps. Current Fold8 guidance in India also describes adding a third supported app. Reading while taking notes, messaging while checking a document, or any task where both apps need persistent space.
Pop-up view Places one supported app in a floating window over another app. You can move and resize the window. Short replies, calculators, quick references and other tasks that should not permanently divide the screen.
Taskbar Shows a row of app shortcuts on supported Fold models. Drag an app from it into a screen area to open Multi window. Launching a second app without returning to the Recents screen.
App Pair Saves two apps that are already arranged in split screen so the combination can be reopened from the Taskbar, Home screen or Apps edge panel. Repeated routines such as an email-and-calendar or browser-and-notes pairing.
Multi view Changes supported apps to a dual-column layout through Display settings. It is separate from launching two different apps in Multi window. Apps that provide their own two-column interface on the wide display.

These modes are not interchangeable. Split screen changes the space allocation of two apps, pop-up view overlays one app on another, and Multi view changes the layout inside a compatible app. Choosing the mode that matches the job prevents an unnecessarily cramped or cluttered screen.

Check the conditions before you start

Use the inner display

Samsung’s general Multi window guidance says split screen and pop-up view are not supported on the front screen of Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip devices. Unfold the phone and perform the setup on the large inside panel. If the command is missing while the phone is closed, that is expected behavior rather than a fault.

Confirm your model and One UI version

Samsung changes feature names, menu paths and screen configurations by country, model and software version. The instructions below use the labels in current Samsung support guidance, but an older Fold may place the same command in a slightly different menu. The Fold8 guide is specifically written for One UI 9 and should not be treated as a universal description of every earlier model.

Expect app-by-app compatibility

Split screen and pop-up view are not guaranteed for every app. A program may omit the command, refuse to open beside another app or behave poorly when forced into a narrow window. If one app is unavailable, try another supported app first; the problem may be a design limitation rather than a phone setting.

Open two apps side by side with Split screen view

  1. Unfold the phone. Keep the device on the inner display.
  2. Open the first app you want to use.
  3. Open Recents. Use your normal navigation method to display the recent-app cards.
  4. Tap the first app’s icon above its preview. Do not tap the preview itself; the icon opens the window-management menu.
  5. Choose Open in split screen view. The first app moves into one portion of the display.
  6. Select the second app from the available list. It must support split screen. The second app fills the remaining portion.

The divider between the windows controls how much space each app receives. Drag it toward one side when one app needs more room, or return it toward the center for a more even arrangement. Tap the divider to expose additional controls. Depending on the model and software, those controls can include changing the app positions and saving the current combination as an App Pair.

Three-way split on compatible Fold8 software

Samsung’s current India support page for the Galaxy Z Fold8 describes selecting a third supported app after the first two are arranged. The result is a three-way split view on that device and software combination. Because Samsung documents different limits and interfaces for older regional guides, do not assume that every Fold can show three simultaneous windows. If no third-app option appears, your model or software may support only the two-app arrangement.

Rearrange or resize the layout

Use the divider rather than trying to resize an app from its ordinary edge. Tapping the divider provides the layout controls Samsung exposes for your model, including an option to swap app positions on supported software. If an app suddenly becomes difficult to use, give it more width by moving the divider, or swap positions so the app you are actively reading sits in the larger area.

Open a floating window with Pop-up view

  1. Open the first app on the unfolded inner display.
  2. Open Recents and locate the app card.
  3. Tap the app’s icon above the preview.
  4. Choose Open in pop-up view. The app becomes a floating window over the underlying screen.
  5. Move or resize the window as needed while continuing to use the app below it.

Pop-up view is useful when the floating app is temporary. For example, you can keep a reference or conversation above a document without permanently dividing the document’s workspace. The available resize behavior and window controls depend on the app and One UI version. Some apps do not support pop-up view at all, so the command may be absent.

Use the Taskbar to launch apps quickly

The Taskbar is available only on supported Fold models. When it is present, opening an app can reveal a row of app shortcuts along the edge of the inner display. Instead of returning to Recents, drag another app from the Taskbar to the part of the screen where you want it. The phone then opens that app in a Multi window arrangement when the app supports the requested mode.

Dragging is important: simply tapping a Taskbar icon may switch apps, while dragging tells the system to place the app into a split or other Multi window position. If the drag does nothing, check whether the destination layout is available for that app and whether the Taskbar is enabled on your model.

Save a recurring combination as an App Pair

An App Pair stores the two apps in their current split-screen combination. It is useful when you repeat the same sequence and do not want to build it manually each time.

  1. Open the first and second apps in split screen view.
  2. Tap the center divider between the two windows.
  3. Tap the App Pair star in the controls that appear.
  4. Choose where to save it: the Taskbar, the Home screen or the Apps edge panel, depending on the options your software provides.

After saving, use the chosen location to reopen both apps together. The pair is tied to the selected combination, so saving it after you have adjusted the divider preserves the arrangement you actually use. App Pair is a shortcut for a repeated split-screen setup; it does not make unsupported apps compatible with Multi window.

Turn on gesture shortcuts when your software offers them

On devices running One UI 6 or later, Samsung places the relevant switches at Settings > Advanced features > Multi window. The names can differ on other versions.

  • Swipe for split screen: enable it for a two-finger swipe upward from the bottom of the screen.
  • Swipe for pop-up view: enable it for a one-finger inward swipe from either top corner.

These gestures are optional shortcuts, not separate multitasking systems. If the switches are missing, use the Recents method or the Taskbar instead. Samsung’s settings paths vary by model and software, so do not keep searching for a switch that your device does not expose.

Use Multi view for an app’s own two-column layout

Multi view is distinct from Multi window. Rather than opening two independent apps, it asks supported apps to use a dual-column design suited to the wide inner screen.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Display.
  3. Choose Screen layout and zoom.
  4. Select Multi view.

The setting affects compatible apps that provide a dual-column interface. It does not create a second app window and does not replace split screen. If your goal is to run two separate apps at the same time, return to Recents and use Multi window.

When an app will not open in Multi window

The split-screen or pop-up command is missing

First, verify that the phone is unfolded. Samsung does not support these modes on the front screen of the Fold series. If you are on the inner display and the command is still absent, the app may not support that mode. Try another app to distinguish an app limitation from a system problem.

Try “Multi window for all apps” carefully

Some devices provide an experimental override in Samsung’s Labs area called Multi window for all apps. It can allow apps that were not designed for the layout to open in split screen or pop-up view. Samsung labels Labs features experimental and warns that they “may not work as expected.” The option can be missing on some devices, and forcing an unsupported app can produce incorrect sizing or other behavior.

To look for it, open Settings > Advanced features > Labs and check whether the Multi window option is listed. If Labs is not present, or the switch does not solve the problem, use the app’s normal single-window mode rather than treating the override as a guaranteed fix.

The second app does not appear in the chooser

The chooser filters for apps that can participate in the selected layout. Go back, open the second app normally once, then return to Recents and try again. If it still does not appear, its current version may not support the mode on your device. A different app with the same general purpose can confirm that Multi window itself is functioning.

The layout is too cramped

Drag the divider toward the app that needs more space. On supported software, tap the divider and use the position controls to swap which app receives the larger area. For a short task, switch to pop-up view so the underlying app can keep most of the display.

The Taskbar is not visible

Taskbar support is model-dependent. If your Fold does not offer it, the Recents workflow remains the standard way to launch split screen or pop-up view. If the Taskbar normally appears but an app cannot be dragged into Multi window, the destination app or the dragged app may not support the requested arrangement.

You cannot find the gesture switches

Samsung places the One UI 6-or-later switches under Settings > Advanced features > Multi window, but paths vary. Missing switches do not prevent multitasking; use Recents or the Taskbar. Gestures are convenience controls, not a requirement.

Choose the fastest workflow for common jobs

If you need to… Use… Why
Read a page and write notes continuously Two-app split screen Both apps retain dedicated space and the divider lets you favor the note or reference pane.
Keep a quick calculator, message or reference over another app Pop-up view The floating window can be moved aside or resized without permanently dividing the base app.
Repeat the same two-app routine every day Split screen followed by App Pair The saved pair reopens both apps from the Taskbar, Home screen or Apps edge panel.
Launch a different second app frequently Taskbar drag-and-drop You can place an app into Multi window without rebuilding the arrangement from Recents.
Use one compatible app in a wide, tablet-like interface Multi view It changes the app’s internal layout instead of creating two app windows.

A dependable setup sequence

For most Fold owners, the least confusing order is to start with Recents. It exposes the app icon and the two fundamental commands, so you can confirm whether the app supports split screen or pop-up view before adding shortcuts. Once a combination works, adjust the divider and save an App Pair if you use it repeatedly. Add gesture shortcuts only after you know which mode you prefer, and treat Labs overrides as a last resort because Samsung does not guarantee their behavior.

Remember the scope of each feature: the inner display is required for Samsung’s Fold Multi window modes; compatibility is decided app by app; the number of simultaneous windows is model- and software-specific; and Multi view is a separate dual-column setting. Those distinctions explain most apparent setup failures without requiring a reset or a third-party utility.
