Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse several Windows Security layers together: keep Microsoft Defender Antivirus real-time protection on, enable cloud-delivered protection and automatic sample submission, turn on SmartScreen reputation checks, enable both Potentially Unwanted App (PUA) controls, and—on eligible Windows 11 systems—consider Smart App Control. These settings reduce the chance that a malicious or unwanted file reaches execution, but Microsoft does not describe them as a guarantee against every new or evasive threat.
The most important limitation is browser scope. SmartScreen’s Edge download checks and PUA “Block downloads” inspect downloads in Microsoft Edge. PUA “Block apps” can still identify a potentially unwanted application after it was downloaded through Chrome, Firefox, or another browser. Defender Antivirus real-time protection remains the underlying file-scanning layer regardless of which browser you use.

What each Microsoft protection actually does
Windows Security presents several related controls, but they do not perform the same job or act at the same moment. Understanding those boundaries prevents a false sense of security and helps you choose the right setting when a warning appears.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Protection | What it evaluates | When it acts | Important scope or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Defender Antivirus real-time protection | Threats in files and activity as Windows accesses them | When files are opened, downloaded, or otherwise accessed | Turned-off real-time protection means files opened or downloaded are not scanned for threats. It is not an absolute execution-control policy. |
| Cloud-delivered protection and automatic sample submission | Cloud reputation and samples that help Microsoft identify emerging threats | During Defender’s analysis of suspicious files or behavior | Microsoft recommends both for optimal protection; an administrator may control availability. |
| SmartScreen: Check apps and files | Reputation of applications and files downloaded from the web | When Windows evaluates a downloaded app or file | It supplies reputation-based warnings or blocks, not a promise to recognize every unknown threat. |
| SmartScreen for Microsoft Edge | Website and download reputation in Edge | While browsing or downloading in Edge | The website and download checks are specifically associated with Edge. |
| PUA blocking: Block apps | Potentially unwanted applications (PUA) | After a PUA reaches the device, including at launch or installation | Can detect a PUA obtained through a browser other than Edge. PUA is not synonymous with confirmed malware. |
| PUA blocking: Block downloads | PUA during the download transaction | As a file is downloaded | Microsoft says this control works only with Microsoft Edge. |
| Smart App Control | Whether an app is predicted to be malicious or untrusted, including signature validity | When an app is assessed for execution | Windows 11 only, subject to device eligibility. There is no per-app bypass; turning the feature off is the available override. |
These layers overlap, but none should be described as a complete “block all malware” switch. Defender focuses on antivirus detection, SmartScreen focuses on reputation, PUA controls focus on unwanted software, and Smart App Control adds a separate application-trust decision.

Before changing settings
- Use an up-to-date Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation. Settings labels and availability can change with Windows updates.
- Sign in with an account that can change Windows Security settings. Threat details in Protection history require administrator privileges.
- If a control is greyed out, missing, or immediately reverts, the device may be managed by an organization. Contact the administrator instead of attempting to override policy.
- Do not run another real-time antivirus or antispyware product alongside Windows Defender. Microsoft advises against running multiple real-time products concurrently.
- If Windows Security’s layout differs, open Start, search for Windows Security, and use the section names shown on your device.
1. Turn on Defender Antivirus real-time protection
Real-time protection is the foundation for scanning files as Windows accesses them. Microsoft explicitly states that files opened or downloaded while this protection is off are not scanned for threats.
- Open Start, search for Windows Security, and open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Virus & threat protection settings, select Manage settings.
- Turn Real-time protection on.
- Turn Cloud-delivered protection on.
- Turn Automatic sample submission on.
Cloud-delivered protection and automatic sample submission provide Defender with additional cloud analysis and samples for emerging threats. Microsoft recommends enabling them for optimal protection. They do not replace local scanning, and they cannot guarantee detection of every new file.
If the switches are unavailable
Windows may display a message that an administrator manages the setting. This is common on work, school, or otherwise managed PCs. The correct remedy is to ask the organization’s IT administrator which policy is in force. Installing a second real-time antivirus to work around the restriction can create conflicts and is contrary to Microsoft’s guidance.

2. Enable SmartScreen reputation checks
SmartScreen adds reputation-based warnings for applications and files from the web. It is different from Defender’s content and behavior scanning: a file may be unfamiliar or have a poor reputation even when an antivirus signature is not yet available.

- In Windows Security, open App & browser control.
- Select Reputation-based protection.
- Turn on Check apps and files.
- If the option is present, turn on SmartScreen for Microsoft Edge.
Check apps and files evaluates the reputation of applications and files downloaded from the web. SmartScreen for Microsoft Edge can warn about known dangerous sites and suspicious downloads and give you an opportunity to cancel a download.
Reputation is not the same as proof of safety or proof of malware. A new, legitimate application may have little reputation data and trigger a warning, while a newly distributed malicious file may not yet be known. Treat the warning as a reason to stop and verify the source, not as a claim that every unrecognized file is malicious or that every file without a warning is safe.
3. Enable both PUA blocking controls
Potentially unwanted applications are software Microsoft considers undesirable even when it does not meet the definition of malware. Examples can include software that displays unwanted advertising, uses the PC for cryptomining, or bundles other software. A PUA warning therefore deserves attention, but it should not automatically be described as a confirmed virus detection.
- Remain in App & browser control > Reputation-based protection.
- Find Potentially unwanted app blocking and turn it on.
- Open the control’s options and enable both Block apps and Block downloads when they are shown.
Block apps versus Block downloads
Block apps can identify a PUA after it has arrived on the computer or been installed. Because it evaluates the application rather than only the download transaction, it can still help when the file came through Chrome, Firefox, or another browser.

Block downloads looks for a PUA while it is being downloaded. Microsoft states that this feature works only with Microsoft Edge. If you use another browser, the absence of an Edge download warning does not mean PUA protection is absent: the Block apps control and Defender Antivirus can still evaluate the file after it reaches the device.
Why both controls are useful
The two controls cover different moments. Block downloads can stop an unwanted application before the file is saved, while Block apps provides a later opportunity to detect it. Enabling both follows Microsoft’s recommendation and avoids relying on an Edge-only download check.
4. Review Smart App Control on Windows 11
Smart App Control is an additional Windows 11 application-trust feature, not a replacement for Defender Antivirus. It uses a cloud service to assess an app. If the prediction is uncertain, it checks whether the app has a valid signature; an unsigned or invalidly signed app may be treated as untrusted and blocked.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Go to App & browser control.
- Select Smart App Control settings, if that page is available.
- Read the current mode and eligibility message before changing anything.
Smart App Control is not available in Windows 10. On Windows 11, availability depends on the device’s state and Windows update history. Microsoft’s current support information describes different eligibility situations: some devices expose it only after a new installation, while recent updates may allow activation from Windows Security without a clean installation. Because the rule is not universal, use the message on your own Smart App Control page and install current Windows updates rather than assuming every Windows 11 PC can enable it.

No per-app exception
Microsoft says there is currently no way to bypass Smart App Control protection for an individual app. If it blocks a legitimate program, verify the publisher and obtain a properly signed version from the authentic vendor. The available user-level choice is to turn Smart App Control off, which reduces this layer for all apps; do not switch it off casually just to run an unverified download.
How the layers respond to common download scenarios
| Scenario | Likely first signal | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A known dangerous site or download is opened in Edge | Edge SmartScreen warning | Cancel the download unless you can independently verify the source and need the file. |
| A newly published installer has little reputation data | SmartScreen may warn even without a confirmed malware detection | Check the vendor’s authentic site, publisher identity, and signature before proceeding. |
| A PUA is downloaded in Edge | PUA Block downloads may act during the download | Leave the item blocked; investigate the software’s purpose before taking any remediation action. |
| A PUA arrives through another browser | PUA Block apps or Defender may act after the file arrives | Do not launch it. Open Protection history and follow the remediation action shown. |
| An unsigned or invalidly signed app is assessed by Smart App Control | Smart App Control may classify it as untrusted and block it | Obtain a correctly signed build from the legitimate publisher; there is no individual-app bypass. |
| A file matches Defender’s threat detection | Defender Antivirus detection and a Protection history event | Keep it quarantined or remove it unless you have verified a false positive with strong evidence. |
5. Check Protection history and remediate detections
Protection history is where Windows Security records recent detections and the action taken. Microsoft says events are retained for two weeks, so review an alert promptly if you need its details.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Expand an event card to see the detection name, affected item, severity, and available actions. Administrator privileges may be required to view threat details.
- Choose the appropriate remediation action, such as Remove, when offered.
A quarantined threat is blocked from running, but quarantine does not necessarily mean the item has been removed from the computer. If Windows offers Remove for a confirmed threat or PUA, use it unless you have a documented reason to retain the file for professional analysis.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not use Allow casually
Allow can make a detected item available to run. Use it only after verifying the file’s origin, publisher, and intended behavior and accepting the risk. A file being needed for work is not, by itself, evidence that the detection is wrong.
Best Value
Handling a suspected false positive
Pause before overriding a warning. First confirm that the download came from the vendor’s authentic website rather than a mirror, advertising redirect, cracked-software page, or unsolicited message. Check the publisher displayed by Windows and compare it with the vendor you intended to use. If the publisher is missing, misspelled, or inconsistent with the expected software, keep the item blocked.
Use Protection history to identify whether the event came from Defender Antivirus, a PUA rule, SmartScreen, or Smart App Control. Those labels describe different judgments: a PUA result means potentially unwanted behavior, while an antivirus threat result is a malware-oriented detection. If the vendor can provide a correctly signed build or an explanation for the detection, prefer that evidence over disabling protection globally.
Browser and operating-system caveats
- The cited Windows Security and App & browser control settings apply across Windows 10 and Windows 11, but exact labels and navigation can change with updates.
- Smart App Control is a Windows 11 feature and is not available on Windows 10.
- SmartScreen’s Edge website and download checks are tied to Microsoft Edge.
- PUA Block downloads works only in Microsoft Edge; PUA Block apps can still detect a PUA after it was downloaded through another browser.
- Real-time Defender scanning is browser-independent at the file-access layer, provided real-time protection is on.
- Organizations can manage or hide these controls. A managed setting should be discussed with IT rather than overridden.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
The setting is missing
Search for Windows Security from Start and open the section names directly. If the feature still does not appear, check whether the edition, Windows version, update state, or organizational policy supports it. Smart App Control’s absence on Windows 10 is expected.
The setting is greyed out
A third-party security policy, organization management, or another antivirus product may control the switch. Confirm which security product provides real-time protection and ask the administrator about policy. Do not install another real-time antivirus simply to gain a second set of toggles.
A legitimate installer is blocked
Do not immediately choose Allow. Verify the download source and publisher, look for a signed current release, and inspect the specific Protection history event. Smart App Control has no per-app bypass, so a properly signed installer from the publisher is the safer resolution than disabling the feature.
A download was not warned about
No warning does not establish that a file is safe. SmartScreen relies on reputation, and new threats can lack reputation data. Keep Defender real-time protection, cloud-delivered protection, and automatic sample submission enabled, and avoid opening files whose source or publisher you cannot verify.
A maintenance checklist
- Confirm Real-time protection remains on after Windows updates or troubleshooting.
- Keep Cloud-delivered protection and Automatic sample submission enabled unless an administrator has set a different policy.
- Review Check apps and files and SmartScreen for Microsoft Edge under App & browser control > Reputation-based protection.
- Verify both PUA choices—Block apps and Block downloads—are enabled when available.
- On eligible Windows 11 devices, review Smart App Control’s current mode and eligibility message.
- Open Protection history after a warning and act before its two-week event-retention window expires.
- Keep Windows and applications updated, and obtain installers from authentic publishers.
This configuration gives Windows 10 and Windows 11 users layered detection at file access, reputation checks during web use, PUA controls at download and app stages, and an optional Windows 11 trust decision. Its value comes from keeping the layers enabled and treating every warning as information to investigate—not from assuming that any single setting can block every malicious download or execution attempt.
