The game is officially titled Nintendo Switch Sports; “Nintendo Switch Sports Resort” is not the name used in Nintendo’s support material. To play with people sharing one console, start the game, choose Play Locally, select the participating users and controller arrangement, then choose a sport. The game must be running in TV mode: Nintendo Switch Sports does not support Handheld Mode.
If your group has several nearby consoles, use the separate LAN Play feature. It connects up to four consoles through the same wired router, with up to two players selected on each console. LAN Play needs Ethernet connections and a dock/display setup, while ordinary same-console play does not.

What “local multiplayer” means in Nintendo Switch Sports
Nintendo Switch Sports has two different ways to play with people in the same place:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Play Locally: multiple players share one Nintendo Switch and one display.
- LAN Play: nearby Nintendo Switch consoles join the same match through a wired local network.
These modes have different menus, hardware and limits. If everyone is using one console, do not look for LAN Play or buy Ethernet equipment. If each player or household needs its own console, use LAN Play rather than the ordinary Play Locally option.

The title sometimes called “Nintendo Switch Sports Resort” is officially Nintendo Switch Sports. Use that title when searching your game library, Nintendo’s support pages or accessory instructions.
Choose the right setup before you start
| Question | One-console local play | Multi-console LAN Play |
|---|---|---|
| How many consoles? | One | Up to four consoles, according to Nintendo Support |
| Network required? | No network equipment required | All consoles connect by Ethernet to the same shared wired router |
| Players per console | Depends on the sport and its supported controller arrangement | Up to two players selected on each console; simultaneous participants still depend on the sport |
| Display and dock | TV-mode setup required | Each console needs a display/dock setup suitable for play |
| Controller choices | Sport-specific combinations of paired Joy-Con, a single Joy-Con, or Joy-Con plus Leg Strap | The same sport-specific controller rules apply on each console |
| Best for | People sharing one screen and console | A larger gathering with several consoles in the same location |
The simultaneous player count is not one universal number for the whole game. Nintendo states that it varies by sport, so check the prompts for the sport your group intends to select instead of planning around a single maximum.
Requirements for one-console Play Locally
Use TV mode
Connect the Nintendo Switch dock to a TV or other compatible display and start the game there. Nintendo explicitly says Nintendo Switch Sports does not support Handheld Mode. A console being undocked with the game visible on its built-in screen is therefore not a supported local-multiplayer setup.

The required controller depends on the sport. Nintendo lists these supported styles:
- Paired Joy-Con controllers.
- A single Joy-Con controller.
- A Joy-Con used with the Soccer Leg Strap in modes that support it.
The game asks you to choose or confirm the arrangement during setup. Do not assume that every sport accepts the same number of Joy-Con or that a second controller is always necessary. Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible with Nintendo Switch Sports.
Plan accessories around the players and sport
Count the people who will actually play, identify the sport, and then compare that requirement with the Joy-Con you already own. Nintendo notes that additional accessories may be needed for multiplayer, but no single extra accessory is a universal requirement for every sport and player count.
The Leg Strap is a special case rather than a general multiplayer accessory. It is relevant to some Soccer play, including the two-player Shoot-Out mode. It is optional for the game overall, and Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with the Leg Strap.

How do you play Nintendo Switch Sports locally with friends?
- Put the console in TV mode. Dock the Nintendo Switch and connect the dock to the display. Make sure the controllers you intend to use are available and charged.
- Start Nintendo Switch Sports. Wait for the title screen and select Play Locally.
- Follow the player prompts. Choose the participating user or users when the game asks, then confirm the controller arrangement shown on screen. The available choices depend on the sport and the controllers connected.
- Check the controller-hold screen. Hold each controller as directed. This is where the game may confirm a standard controller setup or expose a sport-specific option such as Soccer’s Leg-Strap Mode.
- Select a sport. Continue through that sport’s prompts. The sport determines the supported controller style and the number of simultaneous participants.
- Begin the match. Once every participant has completed the on-screen confirmation, proceed to the activity. If a player is missing, stop at the controller-hold screen and correct the arrangement before starting.
There is no need to configure a shared router, connect Ethernet cables or create a LAN room for this one-console method. Those steps belong only to multi-console LAN Play.
Soccer: switching to Leg-Strap Mode
Soccer can offer a Leg-Strap option during local play. The setting is not selected from a general system menu; it appears on the game’s controller-hold screen.
- Enter local play and proceed until the controller-hold screen appears.
- Confirm that the participating players have the supported Joy-Con and, where needed, the Leg Strap attached as instructed.
- Press the + button on the controller while that screen is displayed to switch to the Leg-Strap Mode setting.
- Follow the on-screen positioning and calibration prompts before starting the Soccer activity.
Nintendo describes the Leg Strap as one use for Soccer’s two-player Shoot-Out mode. It is not a requirement for every Soccer session or for other sports. If the Leg-Strap option does not appear, verify that you are on the controller-hold screen, that the selected activity supports the mode and that you are not using a Joy-Con 2 controller, which is incompatible with the strap.
How to set up LAN Play with multiple consoles
LAN Play is for consoles in the same physical location. Nintendo’s procedure uses a shared wired router rather than ordinary wireless local play. Each console must have the game, a dock/display arrangement and an Ethernet connection to the same router. Depending on the ports on your console and router, you may need an Ethernet adapter or a network switch.
Rank #2
- Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
Prepare the hardware
- Place up to four Nintendo Switch consoles where every group can see its own display.
- Put each console in its dock and connect each dock/display setup as required for TV-mode play.
- Run an Ethernet cable from every console’s wired network adapter or compatible dock connection to the same router. If the router has too few ports, use a suitable network switch connected to that router.
- Make sure Nintendo Switch Sports is installed on every console and that each console has the controllers required by the sport.
These Ethernet and router requirements apply to LAN Play. They are not needed when several people are simply sharing one console through Play Locally.
Put every console into the LAN Play menu
- On each console, start Nintendo Switch Sports and remain at the title screen.
- Move the title-screen cursor to Play with Friends.
- Hold L and R together.
- While holding those buttons, click and hold the Left Stick until the menu changes to LAN Play.
- Select LAN Play on each console.
The button-and-stick sequence matters. If the menu continues to show the ordinary friend-play choices, return to the title screen and repeat the sequence exactly.
Select players on each console
Choose one or two players for that console, then select the participating user or users when prompted. Nintendo documents up to two players per console in LAN Play. The sport you later choose can impose a lower simultaneous participant count, so selecting two users on every machine does not guarantee that every sport will use all of them at once.
Create and join the room
- Have one console select Make a New Room. This console becomes the host.
- On every other console, select Join Room.
- Wait until all intended consoles and players appear in the room.
- On the host console, select Play with this group!.
- As a group, choose one of the sports available for the assembled players.
- Complete the sport’s controller-hold and activity prompts on each console.
Nintendo’s documented LAN capacity is up to four consoles, with up to two players selected on each. The number who can participate simultaneously is sport-dependent, so the available-sport screen is the authoritative check for your particular group.

| Your situation | What to check | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Two or more people on one console | Start Play Locally and follow the selected sport’s controller prompts. | Do not assume every sport uses paired Joy-Con or the same number of controllers. |
| A sport showing a single-Joy-Con option | Give each participant the supported single Joy-Con arrangement displayed by the game. | Do not add a Pro Controller; it is not compatible. |
| Soccer with a Leg Strap | Use the controller-hold screen and press + to select Leg-Strap Mode when the activity supports it. | Do not treat the Leg Strap as required for all sports or all Soccer modes. |
| Using Joy-Con 2 | Check whether the requested activity needs the Leg Strap. | Joy-Con 2 cannot be used with the Leg Strap. |
| Several consoles in one room | Give each console its own display/dock setup, Ethernet connection and sport-compatible controllers. | Do not confuse nearby consoles with wireless local play; Nintendo’s LAN instructions require a shared wired router. |
Troubleshooting local multiplayer
The game will not start local multiplayer in handheld mode
Switch to a docked TV-mode setup. Handheld Mode is not supported by Nintendo Switch Sports, so changing users or reconnecting controllers will not make handheld local multiplayer work.
“Play Locally” is missing
Return to the game’s title screen and look for the local-play option there. If you are trying to combine separate consoles, use Play with Friends and the L/R plus Left Stick sequence to reveal LAN Play instead. The two modes are not interchangeable.
A controller is rejected
Read the controller arrangement shown for the selected sport and match it exactly. A paired Joy-Con setup, a single Joy-Con setup and a Joy-Con-plus-Leg-Strap setup are different choices. Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not supported, so replace one with a compatible Joy-Con arrangement rather than trying to add it to the room.
The Leg-Strap option is unavailable
Make sure you are on the controller-hold screen and press + to switch Soccer’s mode when the activity supports it. Confirm that the selected activity is one that uses the strap and that the controller is not a Joy-Con 2, which cannot work with the Leg Strap.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA LAN console cannot find the room
- Confirm that every console is connected by Ethernet to the same router, not to separate networks.
- Check that each cable is firmly connected and that any required Ethernet adapter or network switch is powered and connected to the shared router.
- Repeat the title-screen input sequence: move to Play with Friends, hold L and R, then click and hold the Left Stick until LAN Play appears.
- Verify that exactly one console chose Make a New Room and that the others chose Join Room.
- Have the host wait for every intended player before selecting Play with this group!.
Not everyone can enter the selected sport
Participant limits vary by sport. A LAN room can contain up to four consoles and up to two selected players per console, but the sport may support fewer simultaneous participants. Return to the available-sport selection and choose an activity whose limit fits the group, or reduce the selected players on one or more consoles.
A practical pre-game checklist
- Confirm the product in the game library is Nintendo Switch Sports.
- Decide whether everyone is sharing one console or whether you need LAN Play across several consoles.
- For one console, dock the Switch and connect it to a display; do not use Handheld Mode.
- Identify the sport before buying or borrowing accessories.
- Count the available Joy-Con and match them to the sport’s on-screen arrangement.
- Exclude Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers from your controller plan.
- For Soccer Leg-Strap Mode, prepare a compatible Joy-Con and Leg Strap; do not use Joy-Con 2 with the strap.
- For LAN Play, prepare up to four consoles, a display/dock setup for each, Ethernet cables and a shared wired router.
- Use an Ethernet adapter or network switch if the console or router lacks enough suitable ports.
- On LAN, designate one host for Make a New Room and tell every other console to choose Join Room.
- Check the sport’s participant limit before committing every player to the room.
Which setup should you use?
Choose Play Locally when the group can share one Nintendo Switch and one screen. It is the simpler option: select the mode, identify the users, follow the controller prompts and choose a sport. It does not require a router, Ethernet cables or multiple displays.
Choose LAN Play when several consoles are available and players need separate screens or more room to play. It involves more equipment and a precise room-creation sequence, but it supports up to four connected consoles and up to two selected players on each, subject to the sport’s simultaneous-participant limit.
