To receive crypto, generate the address in Ledger Wallet, verify the same address on Atom, and use the identical blockchain network at the sending service. To send crypto, review the recipient, asset, amount and fee on Atom’s Secure Screen and approve only when every detail is correct.
Those checks matter because Ledger Atom is the signer that authorizes transactions. Ledger describes Atom as a connected device with everyday applications in Standard Mode and a separate Secure Element running Ledger OS. The Secure Element keeps private keys isolated and decides whether a transaction can be signed.

What Ledger Atom is and what Ledger Wallet does
Ledger Atom is a hardware signer rather than a conventional online wallet. Ledger Wallet provides the account interface for actions such as receiving, sending, buying, swapping and staking, subject to the asset, blockchain, service provider and jurisdiction involved. Atom authenticates and signs transactions initiated from those accounts.

In Ledger’s 2026 introduction, the company said more than 8 million Ledger signers had been sold since 2014. Ledger’s current product information says Ledger Wallet supports more than 15,000 assets and over 100 chains, but that headline coverage is not a guarantee that every asset, feature or service is available in every country or on every account.

Why the Secure Element matters
Ledger OS runs in a separate Secure Element from Atom’s general-purpose environment. Your private key is created and held there; it is not exported to Ledger Wallet, a phone or a computer. Ledger Wallet can prepare a transaction, but Atom must authenticate it and sign it.
For transactions that support Clear Signing, Atom’s Secure Screen shows the information that the Secure Element is being asked to sign. Treat that screen as the final authority. A matching address in a desktop or mobile application is useful, but it is not a substitute for checking the device itself.
What to do before first-time setup
- Buy Atom from Ledger or an authorized seller.
- Have the device, its supplied recovery sheet and a private place ready for setup.
- Use a phone or computer that you control and keep its operating system and Ledger Wallet installation current.
- Plan where the recovery phrase will be stored before Atom displays it. You need a location that is offline, protected from casual access and resilient to the risks that matter in your home or office.
Reject a device with credentials already filled in
Do not use an Atom that arrives with a PIN or recovery phrase already completed. A legitimate first-time setup requires you to choose the PIN and have Atom generate the recovery phrase for you. If credentials are supplied by a seller, a message, a card or a previous owner, stop setup and contact the seller through an official support route.
Set up a new Ledger Atom step by step
- Start as a new device. Follow Atom’s on-device initialization flow and choose the option to create a new wallet. Do not restore a wallet unless you are intentionally recovering an existing phrase.
- Choose a PIN on Atom. Create a four- to eight-digit PIN using the device. Do not reuse an easily guessed number, and do not write the PIN beside the recovery phrase.
- Generate the Secret Recovery Phrase. Atom generates 24 words inside its Secure Element. Read each word only from Atom’s Secure Screen and write it on the supplied recovery sheet in the exact order shown.
- Check every word. Write legibly, distinguish similar-looking words and verify the spelling before continuing. The order is part of the secret; a list with the right words in the wrong order will not restore the wallet.
- Confirm on the device. Atom will ask you to select or enter words to prove that the phrase was recorded. Complete this check on the device, not in a computer form.
- Complete the genuine-device check. Finish the authenticity or genuine-device verification in the official Ledger Wallet setup flow. If the check fails, pause rather than moving funds to the device.
- Connect Atom to Ledger Wallet. Pair the signer as instructed by the current application. Ledger Wallet should be used to view accounts and prepare transactions; the device remains necessary to authenticate and sign them.
How to handle the 24-word phrase
The phrase is the master backup for the wallet. Anyone who obtains it can generally restore the wallet on another compatible signer and move funds without your PIN or your physical Atom. Conversely, losing the phrase can leave you unable to restore access if Atom is lost or fails.

- Never photograph or scan the phrase.
- Never type it into a phone, computer, website, cloud note, password manager or online wallet.
- Never send it by email, chat or support ticket.
- Never read it to a support agent. Ledger says it will never ask for the 24 words.
- Store the written backup where visitors, roommates, contractors and malware cannot reach it.
Optional backup choices
Atom supports Ledger Recovery Key and optional Ledger Recover as additional backup choices. These options supplement careful recovery-phrase custody; they do not make it safe to disclose the phrase or enter it online. Decide how you will recover before holding a large balance, and understand which backup method you have actually enabled.
Receiving cryptocurrency into Ledger Atom
Receiving is controlled by the destination account and network. An address that looks correct in a software window is not enough: verify it on Atom before giving it to an exchange, another person or a payment service.
- Open Ledger Wallet and choose Receive.
- Select the exact asset. Choose the coin or token you intend to receive, then select the specific Ledger account.
- Generate the receive address. Ledger Wallet displays an address for that asset and account.
- Compare on Atom. Connect and unlock Atom when prompted. Confirm that the address shown in Ledger Wallet matches the address on Atom’s Secure Screen character by character. Reject the transfer if they differ.
- Copy or share only the verified address. Use the verified value at the exchange or with the sender. Treat a last-minute address change as a security warning.
- Choose the same network at the sending service. A token can exist on several blockchains. The network selected for withdrawal must be the network used by the Ledger account and address.
- Send a test amount first. For a new exchange, asset or network, transfer a small amount and wait for it to appear in the expected account before sending the rest.
Address and network checks
| Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Asset | The exact coin or token selected in Ledger Wallet | Similar names can refer to different assets. |
| Account | The intended Ledger account | One device can contain multiple accounts and derivation paths. |
| Address | Ledger Wallet address equals the address on Atom’s Secure Screen | On-device verification helps detect software that substitutes an address. |
| Network | The withdrawal network equals the Ledger account’s blockchain | A mismatch can leave the assets absent from the expected account. |
| Test transfer | A small amount arrives before the full balance is sent | It validates the asset, network and destination together. |
Sending cryptocurrency from Ledger Atom
Sending requires two separate decisions: preparing the transaction in Ledger Wallet and approving the exact transaction on Atom. The second step is where you verify what will be signed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Choose Send in Ledger Wallet. Select the asset and the receiving network, then choose the Ledger account to debit.
- Enter or scan the recipient address. Compare every character with the recipient’s trusted address. Confirm that the address belongs to the intended person, service or account, not merely that it has a familiar prefix.
- Enter the amount. Check the denomination and whether the application is showing the asset amount, fiat estimate or available balance.
- Review fee and speed settings. Ledger Wallet displays the network fee and any speed choice available for that chain. Make sure the remaining balance covers the fee.
- Select Review. Connect and unlock Atom, then open the requested blockchain application on the device.
- Read Atom’s Secure Screen. Verify the recipient, amount, asset, network and other transaction details on the device. Do not rely on a computer or phone display that conflicts with Atom.
- Approve only an exact match. Confirm on Atom when every detail is correct. Atom signs with the private key inside its Secure Element; the key does not leave the signer.
- Wait for confirmation. Check the transaction status and the destination account on the relevant network. If the status is pending or unclear, investigate that transaction before sending another one.
When to cancel instead of approving
- The recipient on Atom differs from the address you intended.
- The asset or network is not the one you selected.
- The amount or fee is unexpected.
- The device requests an application you did not intend to use.
- A support message, website or caller tells you to reveal the recovery phrase or approve an unfamiliar transaction.
What a wrong withdrawal network can do
Selecting the wrong network at an exchange or other withdrawal service can result in funds not appearing in the Ledger account you expected. The address format alone does not prove that the network is correct; the asset, chain and Ledger account must correspond.

Prevent the mistake
- In Ledger Wallet, identify the asset and account you will receive into.
- Note the blockchain network associated with that account.
- At the sending service, select that same network rather than a similarly named alternative.
- Use a small test withdrawal and wait for confirmation before transferring a larger balance.
If the transfer was already sent
Do not send a second transaction simply because the first is not visible. Check the transaction hash and status on the network used for withdrawal, confirm which network the exchange recorded, and verify that you are viewing the corresponding Ledger account. If the sender or exchange controls the withdrawal, give its support team the transaction details and ask what recovery process it provides. Recovery depends on the asset, chain and service; the original transfer should not be assumed reversible.
How to store the recovery phrase securely
Use the phrase as an offline root credential, not as an everyday login. Keep the written copy separate from Atom and from the PIN so that stealing one item does not automatically reveal the other.
Choose a storage location
- Prefer a private, access-controlled location protected from ordinary loss, unauthorized visitors and the environmental hazards relevant to your home.
- Limit the number of copies. Every additional copy creates another place that can be discovered or damaged.
- Do not label the storage container with words such as “crypto,” “wallet” or “24 words.”
- Periodically inspect the paper for fading or damage without photographing it or entering it into a digital device.
Recognize recovery-phrase scams
Messages claiming that an account must be “validated,” “synchronized,” “upgraded” or “unlocked” by entering the 24 words are attempts to obtain control of the wallet. Ledger states that it will never ask for those words. Close the message and use the official application or support channel you opened yourself.

If Atom is lost or stops working, Ledger recommends restoring access on another Ledger device with the Secret Recovery Phrase. Use a replacement hardware signer when possible. Do not enter the phrase into an online wallet simply because it is faster; doing so exposes the master credential to the device and software handling that wallet.

- Obtain a replacement Ledger device through an official or authorized channel.
- Choose the device’s restore-existing-wallet option.
- Enter the 24 words only on the replacement signer’s secure input flow.
- Recreate the required accounts in Ledger Wallet and verify balances and receive addresses.
- After recovery, treat the old device as untrusted if it was lost, stolen or accessed by someone else, and consider moving funds to accounts derived from a newly generated phrase.
Supported assets, chains and service limits
Ledger Wallet’s stated support of more than 15,000 assets and over 100 chains is a broad product figure from Ledger’s 2026 product information. Actual availability varies by asset, blockchain, account type, integrated service provider and jurisdiction. Buying, swapping and staking can have narrower availability than basic receiving and sending.
Before transferring funds, confirm that Ledger Wallet currently supports the exact asset and network you plan to use. If an asset is not shown, do not improvise by selecting a similarly named account or network. Use the supported account and chain indicated by the current Ledger Wallet interface.
Practical security checklist
- Package arrives without a pre-set PIN or pre-written recovery phrase.
- Atom generates the 24 words on its own Secure Screen.
- Every word is recorded in order and confirmed on the device.
- The phrase remains offline and has never been photographed, typed or disclosed.
- Receive addresses are compared on Ledger Wallet and Atom.
- The asset and blockchain network match at both ends of every transfer.
- A small test transfer succeeds before a large first transfer.
- Recipient, amount, asset, network and fee are checked on Atom before sending.
- Unclear or pending transactions are checked before another transaction is submitted.
- Recovery instructions use another hardware signer, not an online wallet.
Common failure points and fixes
The address on Atom does not match Ledger Wallet
Cancel the receive or send operation. Do not share or approve the address. Restart the address-generation flow from Ledger Wallet and investigate the computer or phone for malware before trying again.
The exchange does not list the expected network
Stop the withdrawal. An alternative network with a similar name is not automatically compatible. Confirm current support for the asset and network in Ledger Wallet and with the exchange before proceeding.

A transfer is not visible after sending
Check the transaction status on the network used, confirm the destination address and verify that Ledger Wallet is displaying the correct account and network. Do not create a duplicate transfer while the first one is unresolved.
A person claiming to be support asks for the phrase
Do not provide it. Ledger says it will never ask for the 24 words. End the conversation and contact support through a channel you navigated to independently.
Using Atom safely over time
Keep the signer disconnected when you are not approving a transaction, and unlock it only when you are ready to review an action. Treat every on-device approval as an authorization, not as a routine confirmation. The combination of an offline recovery phrase, a protected PIN, verified receive addresses, matching networks and Secure Screen review prevents the most common transfer mistakes without requiring you to trust the software display alone.
