Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteLimit an AI agent by starting with the work it must perform, then granting only the identity, action, data and resource needed for that work. Slack implements this mainly through OAuth scopes attached to either a bot or a user token. Microsoft Teams combines app capabilities, resource-specific consent (RSC), and Microsoft Graph permissions delegated to a user or granted to the application itself. Build a feature-to-permission inventory, configure the narrowest grants, test denied operations, and record a review date for every permission.
What least privilege means for an AI agent
An agent is not safe merely because its prompt says “do not access confidential information.” Its effective authority is the combination of platform grants, token identity, app capabilities and any other tools or credentials available to its runtime. Least privilege means that each grant has a current, named feature behind it and that the grant is no broader than the feature requires.

For every proposed permission, be able to answer four questions:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- What action? Is the agent reading, creating, changing or deleting something?
- Which data? Specify message text, files, membership data or another data class rather than saying “workspace access.”
- Which resource? Identify a channel, chat, team, meeting, user or tenant boundary.
- Whose identity? Decide whether the action is performed as the app, as a signed-in person or as an autonomous application.
Separate permissions that let the agent read from those that let it write, and separate both from administrative actions. A permission needed by a possible future feature does not belong in the current installation. Slack’s published principle is direct: “request only what you actively use.” Slack’s least-privilege guidance attributes that wording to Rosanne Ussery, Development Engineer III, in an article published May 19, 2026.

Build a task-to-permission inventory first
Do this inventory before opening either platform’s consent screen. It becomes the design record against which administrators can approve, test and later revoke access.
1. List only features that exist in the first release
Write each user-visible behavior as a verb and object: for example, “answer a question from messages in one team,” “send a reply in the chat where the request arrived,” or “summarize messages that a signed-in employee can already view.” Do not add access for an uncommitted roadmap item. If a feature cannot be described precisely, it is not ready for a permission request.
2. Record the execution context
| Inventory field | What to record | Why it affects least privilege |
|---|---|---|
| Feature | The exact agent behavior | Every grant must have a current owner and purpose. |
| Operation | Read, create, send, edit, delete or administer | Write and administrative powers generally create greater impact than read-only access. |
| Data | Message content, files, membership, metadata or another defined class | Prevents a broad “all collaboration data” request. |
| Resource | Specific chat, team, meeting, channel, user or organization | Enables a resource boundary such as Teams RSC. |
| Identity | App/bot, signed-in user or app-only identity | Determines whether access follows a person or exists independently. |
| Automation mode | Interactive request or unattended job | Unattended work may require application access and therefore needs stronger review. |
| Denial behavior | What the agent should do if access is withheld | Lets you test a safe failure instead of silently expanding permissions. |
3. Map one proposed grant to one or more features
For each scope, RSC entry or Graph permission, write the feature that depends on it and the consequence of withholding it. If no one can name a feature, remove the grant. If one feature appears to require a very broad permission, check the platform reference for a narrower operation or a resource-specific alternative before accepting the breadth.
4. Mark high-impact paths separately
Flag access that can send messages, change content, alter membership, expose private data or act without a signed-in person. Security and workspace administrators should approve those rows independently from harmless status or notification features. Keep the inventory under version control or another change-controlled system so a permission change has an accountable reviewer.
Configure a Slack app with the smallest usable scopes
Slack scopes authorize API actions or data access. The scope is not interchangeable with the identity in the token: a bot scope gives the app’s bot user its own identity, while a user scope lets the app act on behalf of the person who authorized it. Slack’s current scope reference should be checked against the exact API methods your feature calls.

Choose bot identity or user identity deliberately
| Choice | Use when | Least-privilege implication |
|---|---|---|
| Bot scopes and bot token | The agent can perform the job as the app, without impersonating an employee. | Its actions are attributable to the bot identity and do not inherit a user’s unrelated authority. |
| User scopes and user token | The feature genuinely needs to act as the authorizing person or use that person’s access. | The grant follows the person’s authority, so request only the user scopes required for that feature. |
Prefer the bot identity whenever it can complete the task. A user token should have a documented reason, such as a feature that must operate as the requesting employee. Do not use user scopes simply because they make an early prototype easier.
Slack setup procedure
- Translate API calls into scopes. For every method used by the agent, consult the scope reference and select the narrowest relevant scope. Keep read and write needs as separate inventory rows.
- Configure only current scopes in the OAuth installation. Remove permissions left over from experiments, sample code or disabled features. Do not add a scope “just in case.”
- Install with the intended token identity. Confirm whether the OAuth flow is granting bot scopes, user scopes or both, and record who authorized it.
- Exercise the feature with the reduced list. Test a permitted read or send operation, then test an operation that should fail. The expected denial is evidence that the boundary is real; it is not a reason to add a broader scope automatically.
- Reauthorize after scope changes. Adding permissions to an existing token requires the authorization flow again. Plan a communication step so administrators and users know why the consent request changed.
- Audit the installed grant. Slack scopes remain with the app until the app is uninstalled or the scopes are revoked. Compare the installed list with the inventory after deployment and after every feature release.
A scope should disappear when its feature disappears. Treat a successful API call during development as proof that the call works, not as proof that the app needs every neighboring scope listed in documentation.
Model Teams access as capabilities plus explicit permissions
Teams has two permission layers that must be reviewed separately. An app’s capabilities, such as a bot or messaging extension, can provide basic behavior at installation. Microsoft’s documentation warns that checking only an explicit consent screen can therefore miss behavior supplied by the capability itself. Review the capability definition, the data flow and the explicit Microsoft Graph or RSC grants together. The Teams permissions and consent documentation also calls out that bot messages and channel lists can leave the corporate network; include that movement in your data-flow review.
Use RSC for a defined Teams resource
Resource-specific consent (RSC) is the narrow boundary when an agent needs a particular team, chat, meeting or user resource rather than organization-wide access. RSC permissions are declared in the Teams app manifest and consented to in the resource context. The app cannot use that RSC grant for resources where it has not been added.
- Identify the exact resource type in the inventory: one team, a particular chat, a meeting or a user resource.
- Add only the required RSC permission entries to the app manifest. Keep message reading, message sending and other operations as distinct requirements.
- Have the resource owner consent when the app is added to that team, chat or meeting. Record the resource and consenting owner.
- Install the app in a test resource first and verify that an identical operation in a resource without the app is denied.
- Review the resulting RSC grants in the app’s Permissions tab in the Teams admin center.
RSC is a resource boundary, not a substitute for reviewing what the bot or messaging-extension capability can do. Both must be present in the inventory.

Pick delegated or application Graph permissions from the identity context
| Graph permission model | Execution context | Boundary and review concern |
|---|---|---|
| Delegated | An interactive agent acts for a signed-in user. | The agent is limited by the user’s access and the delegated permissions granted to the app. Verify that the user can access the requested resource. |
| Application | An autonomous agent runs without a signed-in user. | The app’s own identity is used, so access is not bounded by a particular user. Treat this as the higher-impact option and constrain it narrowly. |
Microsoft’s Graph permission best practices recommend preferring RSC or delegated access when either meets the requirement. Use application permissions only when neither model can support the agent’s execution context.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Example: sending one chat message
Microsoft documents a concrete least-privilege choice: an app that sends messages to a chat can use the ChatMessage.Send.Chat RSC permission instead of the broader Chat.ReadWrite delegated Graph permission. This is an example of matching an operation to a resource-specific grant, not a universal replacement rule. Check the permission reference for the exact operation, resource type and current app behavior before selecting either permission.
Compare Slack and Teams decisions before approval
| Decision axis | Slack | Microsoft Teams and Graph |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Bot scopes act as the app’s bot identity; user scopes act for the authorizing person. | Delegated Graph access acts for a signed-in user; application access uses the app’s identity without a signed-in user. |
| Resource boundary | Select the narrowest scope available for the API method and data. | Prefer RSC for the team, chat, meeting or user resource where the app is installed. |
| Consent and changes | OAuth installation grants scopes; changing scopes on an existing token requires reauthorization. | Graph application permissions require administrator consent; RSC consent is granted by resource owners in Teams context. Permission changes require review and renewed consent where applicable. |
| Implicit behavior | Review the app’s scopes and the features that use them. | Review explicit Graph/RSC permissions and app capabilities that can confer basic privileges at install. |
| Ongoing control | Audit every requested scope against a current feature. | Verify or revoke Graph consent in Microsoft Entra, review RSC in the Teams admin center, and use access packages or scoped RBAC where standardized access is useful. |
Run a consent and testing review
Before installation
- Compare every requested item with the signed-off inventory and remove unexplained entries.
- Read the platform description for each permission and document the feature, data, resource, identity and denial behavior.
- Inspect Teams capabilities independently of the Graph and RSC consent lists.
- For application-level access, require a written explanation of why an interactive or resource-specific model cannot work.
- Define who owns each grant and when it will be reviewed.
Microsoft recommends explaining the use case, showing where a permission is used and describing what happens if it is not granted. Those explanations should appear in the approval record, not only in developer notes.
In a test tenant or workspace
- Install the smallest proposed grant.
- Run each supported feature with an allowed resource and identity.
- Attempt the same operation against a resource that should be outside the boundary.
- Remove one permission at a time and confirm the agent fails narrowly, with a useful message rather than trying another credential.
- Check outbound data paths, especially Teams bot messages and channel lists, against the organization’s data-handling requirements.
- Capture the installed scopes, RSC entries, Graph consent and app capability configuration as the deployment baseline.
After a change
When an app adds permissions requiring administrator consent, users cannot use the changed app until consent is granted again. Microsoft’s consent management guidance explains how administrators can verify granted permissions in the Microsoft Entra admin center, revoke them there and manage RSC in the Teams resource context. Treat a permission change like a schema change: review it, test it, obtain the required consent and update the inventory.

Review on feature and ownership changes
Schedule a review whenever the agent gains or loses a feature, changes token identity, adds a new tool, moves from interactive to unattended execution or changes its Teams manifest. The reviewer should mark each grant as retained, narrowed or revoked and include the release or change record that caused the decision.

Revoke what is no longer needed
Remove obsolete Slack scopes through the app’s authorization lifecycle and uninstall or revoke grants when an app is retired. In Microsoft Entra, administrators can verify and revoke Graph consent; RSC entries should be reviewed in the Teams admin center and resource context. Revocation is a planned maintenance action, not only an incident response.
Standardize repeated access
For organizations managing several agents with similar needs, Microsoft Entra access packages can standardize grants and groups while allowing assignments to be revoked or to expire. Microsoft’s guidance on granting agents access to Microsoft 365 resources describes this approach. For Azure resource permissions used by an agent, apply role-based access control at the narrowest suitable scope, such as a single resource instead of a subscription or tenant.
Keep platform grants separate from agent tools
A narrowly scoped Slack or Teams grant does not constrain an unrelated credential, connector or tool available to the agent runtime. Maintain a separate tool and identity inventory, and require the same feature-to-action mapping for those integrations. The effective boundary is the union of all usable identities and tools, not the narrowest individual permission screen.
Troubleshoot least-privilege deployments
The agent receives a missing-permission denial
Return to the feature row that failed. Confirm the API operation, token identity and resource are the ones tested in the inventory. On Slack, check the method’s current scope requirement and whether the token was reauthorized after a scope change. On Teams, determine whether the operation is supplied by an app capability, RSC or Graph, then inspect the corresponding grant instead of adding a broad permission from another layer.
A Teams operation works in one place but not another
Check whether the app is installed in the second team, chat or meeting and whether its resource owner granted the RSC permission there. If the agent is using delegated Graph access, verify that the signed-in user can access both resources. A successful call in one resource does not establish organization-wide authorization.
Best Value
An administrator sees more access than expected
Compare three separate records: the Teams manifest and capabilities, RSC entries, and Graph consent in Microsoft Entra. A capability may explain basic behavior that is absent from the Graph consent list. On Slack, compare bot and user scopes separately; a user scope can make the effective identity broader than a bot-only design.
A permission change appears not to take effect
For Slack, run the OAuth authorization flow again because a changed scope list is not retroactively applied to an existing token. For Teams, check whether the changed Graph permission received the required administrator consent and whether the RSC consent was renewed in the resource context. Re-test with the exact installed configuration, not only the manifest or source file.
The agent needs unattended operation
First check whether the job can be redesigned as an interactive delegated action or a resource-specific operation. If it genuinely cannot run with a signed-in user, document why application access is necessary, limit its resources and operations, require administrator approval and set an explicit review or expiry date. Do not silently convert a delegated design into app-only access to avoid a consent problem.
A practical approval checklist
- Every feature has a named action, data class, resource, identity and automation mode.
- Read, write and administrative operations are separate inventory rows.
- No permission exists solely for a possible future feature.
- Slack uses a bot identity unless acting as a person is a documented requirement.
- Slack scopes are checked against the current method reference and tested after OAuth installation.
- Teams capabilities are reviewed separately from Graph and RSC permissions.
- RSC is used when the need is limited to a particular team, chat, meeting or user resource.
- Delegated Graph access is used for interactive signed-in work when it meets the requirement.
- Application Graph access has a written justification, narrow resource limits and an owner.
- Denied operations fail without trying an unrelated credential or broader fallback.
- Consent records explain purpose, impact and the result of withholding each grant.
- Administrators know where to verify and revoke each grant.
- Permission changes trigger reauthorization or re-consent and a new test baseline.
- Access packages or scoped RBAC are considered for repeated or Azure-resource access.
- The agent’s other tools and credentials are reviewed as part of the same effective-authority assessment.
These controls reduce unnecessary exposure, but they do not guarantee safe agent behavior. Platform behavior can vary with the app capability, tenant policy, chosen scopes, consent state and additional identities available to the agent. Keep the inventory current and make every expansion deliberate.
