Install KWGT, place an empty KWGT widget from your Android launcher, then tap it to open the editor and choose or build a preset. Storage access is needed for files, templates, fonts and images; location, network and notification access are feature-specific and can usually remain off unless a widget needs them.
What KWGT does and what you need
KWGT is an Android app for building and displaying custom home-screen widgets. A widget can show clocks, calendars, weather, battery information, system values, music-player details, images and other data, but each function depends on the data source and permissions involved.

You need an Android phone or tablet with a launcher that supports home-screen widgets, the KWGT app installed from its current Google Play listing, and enough free storage for the app and any preset packs. The base app can create and display widgets. The Google Play listing separately identifies Pro features, including importing presets from an SD card and using external skins. Pro is therefore a feature upgrade, not a blanket requirement for every custom widget.

Prepare the phone before adding a widget
- Update the launcher and KWGT through your normal app store if updates are available.
- Keep the preset file or skin package in a location you can identify. Do not move it while you are importing or editing it.
- If you use a device cleaner, security suite or battery manager, note its controls. These utilities can block skin files or stop background widget work.
- Decide which data the widget actually needs. A clock may need only files access, while a weather widget may need location and network access.
- Know your launcher’s method for opening the widget picker and resizing widgets. The names and gestures differ among Pixel-style launchers, One UI, third-party launchers and tablet interfaces.
Install KWGT and place the first widget
- Open Google Play, search for KWGT, and install the official Kustom widget app. If you are using a paid Pro upgrade or a preset pack, install it from its official store listing as well.
- Return to the home screen and long-press an empty area. Choose Widgets. Some launchers expose the picker by pinching the home screen or swiping up and selecting a widgets panel instead.
- Find the KWGT section. Drag a KWGT widget onto the page, or tap a size offered by the launcher. Choose a size close to the space you want; you can resize it later.
- The newly placed widget is normally empty. Tap it to open KWGT’s editor and library. If Android asks which widget instance to edit, select the one you just placed.
- In the library, choose an included preset, an installed skin, or the option to create a new widget. A preset is a saved design; opening it in the editor lets you change its layout, colors, formulas and data sources.
- Tap the save or back control in KWGT, then return to the home screen to see the result. If the widget is clipped, too small or too large, use the launcher’s resize handles before changing the design.
Launcher instructions are not standardized. A long press may show Widgets, Add widgets or a plus button, and some launchers place resizing under a separate edit command. Use the launcher’s own home-screen edit controls when the KWGT editor is already showing the correct design.
Choose, import and edit a preset
Use an included or installed preset
Open the widget, browse the KWGT library and tap a preset thumbnail to preview it. Confirm the selection, make changes in the editor, and save. If a pack contains several variants, verify that the variant matches your screen orientation and intended widget size.
Import a template or skin
Keep the downloaded template or skin in the Kustom folder selected by KWGT. In the editor’s library or import control, browse to that location and select the file. External skins and SD-card imports are among the Pro features identified by the Google Play listing; the exact import controls can change between app versions.
If the file does not appear, do not repeatedly reinstall the pack. First verify that the file is present, that KWGT is looking at the correct storage location, and that Android has not denied file access. A device cleaner or optimization app can also prevent a skin package from providing its files to Kustom. Whitelist the package in that utility if it is blocking access.

Edit the design without changing permissions unnecessarily
KWGT’s editor separates visual elements from the data they display. You can usually change colors, fonts, spacing, images and formulas without granting location, network or notification access. Grant a permission only when the selected element needs the corresponding data.
KWGT permissions explained
Permission names vary with Android releases and phone manufacturers. Android may show a system dialog, an app-specific setting, or a privacy panel rather than the wording used in older instructions. If a path below does not match your phone, open Settings, search for KWGT, open its app-information page, and inspect Permissions, Battery, Mobile data and Notifications.

Why does KWGT need storage or files access?
KWGT uses files access for its cache, basic fonts and images, and template import and export. Without it, a preset may not load, images may be missing, or exported work may fail. Android may call the setting Photos and videos, Music and audio, Files and media or use a broader file-picker permission, depending on the release. Follow the current permission screen rather than an older screenshot.

Why does KWGT need location?
Location is needed only for location-dependent fields: weather, a street or city label, country information, sunrise, sunset and similar astronomy data. If the widget uses one of those fields, allow location from KWGT’s app settings or its permission prompt. If you prefer not to share device location, open the widget in KWGT, choose the Manual option or set a fixed location, save the widget, and then remove location permission in Android settings.

A clock, static image, battery display or other widget that contains no location-dependent field generally does not need location access. Granting it will not repair an unrelated layout or sizing problem.
Why does KWGT need network access?
Network access is used for weather requests and for downloading custom content from the web. Denying it leaves those online features unavailable, while unrelated local editing and display can continue. If weather is blank, check both network access and the weather provider or data settings inside the preset.
Why does KWGT ask for notification access?
KWGT uses notification access to detect a music player through the player’s notification. Enable it only for a widget that displays music-player data. The access is feature-specific; it is not a general requirement for every KWGT widget.

Android can restrict KWGT’s background work through battery optimization or manufacturer-specific controls. Kustom documents that background operation is needed for functions such as updating and recommends removing KWGT from battery-optimized apps. It also documents a persistent-notification option that can help support background operation on devices that aggressively suspend apps.

- Open Settings and go to the KWGT app-information page. Depending on the phone, choose Battery, Battery usage, Background activity or a similarly named control.
- Set KWGT to an unrestricted or allowed background mode, or remove it from the battery-optimization list. Do not assume the exact label from another Android brand applies to yours.
- Check the manufacturer’s separate auto-start, sleeping-apps, background-limit or memory-cleaner controls. Allow KWGT to run in the background.
- If updates still stop, open KWGT’s general settings and consider its persistent-notification option. This keeps a notification present so Android is less likely to suspend the app, although it may not be desirable for every user.
- Reboot once, place the widget on an active home-screen page, and observe whether it resumes updating.
Do not expect per-second refresh. Kustom explains that Android Widgets do not know if they are currently displayed or not.
Frequent updates are limited to reduce battery and performance costs, especially for complex presets. A delay can therefore be normal even after background restrictions are removed.
Fix a widget that is the wrong size
When a widget is stretched, clipped or surrounded by unexpected padding, check KWGT’s sizing preference before rebuilding the design. Kustom’s FAQ advises disabling Auto sizing when it produces poor results. Auto follows information supplied by the launcher, and some launchers report dimensions in ways that do not match the design.
- Open the affected widget in KWGT and find its sizing preference.
- Turn off Auto if the launcher’s automatic dimensions are wrong. Choose a fixed or manual sizing mode when available.
- Save the widget and return to the home screen.
- Use the launcher’s resize handles to set the number of rows and columns you need. Resize from the launcher, not by repeatedly scaling every element in the KWGT editor.
- Recheck on the exact home-screen page where the widget will live. A launcher can apply different margins or grid rules on different devices and orientations.
Fix a preset or skin that will not load
A missing preset is usually a file-location or access problem, not a weather or location problem. Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm that the preset pack or skin is installed and compatible with KWGT.
- Open KWGT’s storage or library settings and verify the selected Kustom folder. Select the folder that actually contains the files.
- Use a file manager to confirm that the preset file exists and has not been renamed, moved or deleted.
- Recheck files or storage permission on KWGT’s Android app-information page.
- Temporarily disable or adjust any cleaner, optimizer or security tool that may quarantine the package. If it is the cause, whitelist the skin package so it can provide files to Kustom.
- Close and reopen KWGT, then try the import again. If only one pack fails while another loads, the problem is likely with that pack’s file or compatibility rather than the widget slot.
Do not grant location or notification access to solve a missing-file error. Those permissions do not provide access to preset storage.
Fix blank weather, city or sunrise fields
- Open the widget in KWGT and identify the element that is blank. Confirm that it actually uses weather, location, sunrise, sunset or another astronomy value.
- If it needs live location, grant location access from Android settings and reopen the widget.
- If you do not want live location, select Manual in the relevant KWGT location settings or enter a fixed location, then save.
- For weather, also verify network access. A location permission cannot supply online weather data when network access is blocked.
- Check the preset’s units, provider and update settings. A valid location with an unavailable online provider can still produce an empty weather value.
If the widget contains no location-dependent field, blank location data is not evidence that KWGT is malfunctioning; remove the unused permission and inspect the preset’s formula or data source instead.
Fix missing music-player information
KWGT reads music-player status through the player’s notification. Start playback and confirm that the player shows a notification, then enable notification access for KWGT in Android’s notification-access settings. If the player has no notification, check the player’s own notification permission and lock-screen or background settings.
After access is granted, reopen the widget and test play, pause, track change and artwork. If ordinary widgets work but only music fields remain empty, the issue is specific to the player notification or the preset’s media formula, not to storage or location permission.

Understand Android and manufacturer-specific permission labels
There is no single universal path for Android permissions. One phone may use Settings > Apps > KWGT > Permissions; another may place the same controls under Privacy, Special app access, Battery or Notifications. Android versions also change whether background location choices are shown as ALL THE TIME and ONLY WHEN RUNNING, and whether broad storage access is replaced by a system file picker.
Use the app’s current Android settings page and the labels displayed on your device. If a permission prompt appears only after you select a feature, that is expected: KWGT can request access when a widget first needs the associated data rather than at initial installation.
A reliable diagnostic order
When several things appear wrong at once, changing every permission can hide the real cause. Use this order:
- Check that the KWGT widget is present on the intended home-screen page and that the correct instance is open in the editor.
- Verify files or storage access and the selected Kustom folder. This resolves many blank-preset and missing-image cases.
- Check sizing mode and launcher resize controls if the design is clipped or misaligned.
- Identify the data type that is blank: location, weather, online content or media-player information.
- Grant only the permission associated with that data type, then test again.
- Remove battery restrictions if updates are late or stop after the screen is off.
- Restart KWGT and the launcher after changing system-level settings.
When to contact Kustom support
If the widget remains broken after checking files, sizing, feature-specific permissions and background limits, contact Kustom at [email protected]. Include the device model, Android version, KWGT version, launcher name, preset name and source, and a concise description of the steps that reproduce the problem. Those details let support distinguish a launcher sizing issue from a file-access, permission or background-process issue.
