One device runs Jackbox Party Pack 12, while the TV shows the shared game and each guest uses a phone, tablet, or other web-enabled device as a controller. Install the pack on a supported PC storefront, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or Nintendo Switch; display that device on the TV; open a game lobby; then have everyone visit jackbox.tv and enter the room code shown on screen. Only the host needs to own the game.
What you need before starting
Jackbox Party Pack 12 is designed around a single host screen and web-based player devices. Gather these items before launching:

- One host device: a PC storefront installation, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or Nintendo Switch. The host device runs Party Pack 12.
- A TV or shared display: connect the host device so everyone can see the lobby, prompts, timers, room code, and results.
- One browser-capable device per participant: phones, tablets, or other web-enabled devices work as controllers. Guests do not need a gamepad.
- Internet access: the browser join process needs connected devices, and the Steam PC listing specifies a broadband internet connection for the host.
- The game purchase on the host device: only one person needs to own and install the product for the group to play.
Keep the TV on the game screen throughout setup. Players need to read the current room code from that screen, and the code can change if the host backs out or restarts a game.

Set up Party Pack 12 on the TV
1. Choose one host device
Select the device that already fits your room and TV. A PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or Nintendo Switch can host Party Pack 12. The choice does not change the phone-controller procedure; it mainly affects which device you connect to the TV, which storefront installation you use, and how reliable the host’s network connection is.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Use a device that can remain in the room for the entire session. If the host device sleeps, loses its network connection, or exits the game, the lobby and its room code may no longer be available.
2. Put the host’s picture on the TV
Connect the host device to the TV or shared display and select the matching input. Start the host device and verify that its game picture is visible at a readable size from the seating area. The TV is the communal display; it does not run the game independently.
For a PC, launch the game on the computer and show that computer’s display on the TV. For a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or Nintendo Switch, launch the installed game on the console while its video output is selected on the TV. Do not ask guests to join until the game screen is visible to everyone.
3. Install and launch Party Pack 12
Install Party Pack 12 on the host device, open it, and wait for the pack’s main menu. Select the game you want to play. The game will open a lobby screen containing a room code. Leave that lobby displayed; the code on this screen is the code players must enter.

If the host changes games, backs out of the lobby, or restarts the session, stop using the old code. Wait for the new lobby to appear and use the newly displayed code instead.
Join with phones and tablets
- Open a browser. Each player should use a phone, tablet, or another web-enabled device and open its browser.
- Go to jackbox.tv. This is the player join page; players do not install a separate controller app.
- Enter the room code. Type the code exactly as it appears on the TV. Room codes are tied to the lobby currently shown by the host.
- Choose a player name. Enter a name that lets the host and other guests identify you, then submit it to join.
- Wait in the lobby. Keep the browser page open. The phone becomes the player’s input device while the TV continues to show the shared game.
- Start from the host screen. When everyone who needs to play is listed in the lobby, the host starts the selected game from the TV or host device.
Players should look at the TV for instructions, questions, timers, and results, then use their phones for responses or other inputs. The phone is not a replacement for the shared display: it supplies individual input, while the TV presents the common state of the game.
Who needs to buy Party Pack 12?
Only the host needs to own and install the pack. Jackbox’s official how-to-play guidance states, “Only one person needs to own the game.” Steam and Xbox describe the same arrangement. Guests join through the browser at jackbox.tv and do not need their own purchase merely to participate in the host’s local session.

Player and audience limits
Nintendo’s official Party Pack 12 listing gives a range of 2–8 players and up to 10,000 additional audience members. The 2–8 figure describes the pack listing; the exact active-player limit can differ by individual game within the pack, so check the selected game’s lobby and on-screen instructions before promising every attendee a player slot.
People beyond the active-player limit may be able to join as audience members when that game’s audience mode is available. Audience participation is separate from the player count: an audience member watches the shared game and participates through the browser without occupying one of the listed player positions.
Host platform comparison
The phone workflow is the same after the host lobby is visible. Choose the host platform by considering what you already own, how easily it reaches the TV, the platform and storefront requirements, network reliability, and the player or audience capacity supported by the particular game.
| Host option | What it does | TV and setup considerations | Phone-controller flow |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC storefront installation | Runs Party Pack 12 on the computer. | Show the PC’s game display on the TV. The Steam listing requires a broadband internet connection. | Players open jackbox.tv, enter the TV’s room code, choose a name, and join. |
| PlayStation 5 | Runs the installed pack on the console. | Use the console’s TV output and keep the lobby visible to the room. | Players use a browser device rather than a console gamepad. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Runs the installed pack on the console. | Use the console’s TV output; one purchased copy can host the group. | Players join at jackbox.tv with the code displayed by the game. |
| Nintendo Switch | Runs the installed pack on the Switch. | Place the Switch in its TV-connected setup and leave the game lobby on screen. | Nintendo instructs players to visit jackbox.tv and enter the displayed room code. |
No supported host platform gives every guest a separate copy requirement for the same local lobby. The important compatibility question is whether the host can run Party Pack 12 and keep its display and internet connection available for the session.

How the room code works
The code belongs to the current lobby
The code shown on the TV identifies the lobby that is currently open. Players must copy that code from the active host screen, not from a previous session, a screenshot, or a message sent earlier in the day.
One code per session, until the host changes state
Everyone joining the same lobby enters the same code. If the host backs out, selects another game, or restarts, the game may issue a different code. In that situation, the old browser sessions should leave and all players should join again with the newly displayed code.
Names identify people after they join
Each browser participant supplies a player name during the join flow. Use distinct names when several people are in the same room; this reduces confusion when the host checks the lobby before starting.

“The code does not work”
- Look at the TV and confirm that the host is still in the game’s lobby.
- Compare every character on the phone with the code currently displayed. Re-enter it rather than relying on an old entry.
- Confirm that the browser is at jackbox.tv, not at a search result or an unrelated page.
- Submit the code again and enter a player name.
- If the host recently backed out, changed games, or restarted, have everyone leave and use the new code from the TV.
A code from a previous lobby cannot be expected to work after the host has generated a replacement code.
Best Value
- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
The join page will not load
- Check that the phone or tablet has an active internet connection.
- Retry jackbox.tv in the device’s browser.
- If other guests can join but one device cannot, use another connected browser-capable device for that guest.
- Keep the host in the lobby while the player retries so the displayed code remains current.
The host screen is visible but players cannot connect
- Verify that the host itself has internet access; the Steam PC listing specifically requires broadband connectivity.
- Confirm that the displayed screen is the active Party Pack 12 lobby, not a paused menu or a different application.
- Have all players re-enter the code exactly as displayed.
- If the host restarted or returned to a menu, wait for the new lobby and restart the join process for everyone.
A player joined, then disappeared
Check whether the player closed the browser, lost the device’s connection, or is looking at an old lobby after the host changed games. Reopen the browser, return to jackbox.tv, and join with the code currently on the TV. The host should wait until the player appears again before starting.
The TV shows the wrong room for the group
Stop the join process and identify which device is actually hosting. Only the host device’s lobby code is valid for that session. Display that host’s game on the TV, read the code from that screen, and have every player rejoin together.
Starting and running a session smoothly
Before inviting everyone
- Install and launch Party Pack 12 on the chosen host.
- Connect the host display to the TV and select the correct TV input.
- Open the intended game and wait for its lobby code.
- Ensure the host and the player devices can reach the internet.
While guests join
- Keep the lobby code visible and readable.
- Ask each guest to use a separate browser device and a recognizable player name.
- Count active players against the selected game’s own limit, not only the pack-level 2–8 listing.
- If the active slots fill, direct additional participants to audience mode when the game offers it.
When everyone is ready
Start the game from the host screen. Players should keep their browser pages open, watch the TV for shared prompts and timers, and use their phones whenever the game requests an answer or other input. If anyone needs to reconnect, pause the start of a new round long enough to confirm that the correct current code is being used.
