How to set up IPVanish VPN and antivirus protection on Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android and more

Set up IPVanish in two separate layers: install and connect the VPN, then enable the antivirus or Threat Protection feature if it appears for your device and plan. The VPN encrypts traffic and helps protect privacy; it does not scan downloads or identify fake login pages by itself.

IPVanish announced an updated antivirus experience integrated into its Windows and macOS desktop clients in an October 8, 2026 report. Because the rollout, plan eligibility, operating-system requirements and labels may vary, use the current in-app wording and the vendor’s current platform guide rather than relying on older screenshots.

What you are setting up

There are two different security functions in the IPVanish app. Treating them separately makes it easier to check whether both are actually active.

VPN protection

When the VPN is connected, your device sends internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel to an IPVanish server. This can reduce exposure on untrusted networks and limits what the local network can see about your connection. A VPN is not an antivirus scanner: an encrypted connection can still carry a malicious file or lead to a deceptive website.

Antivirus or Threat Protection

The antivirus-style layer is intended to address threats such as malicious downloads, harmful files, fake login pages and other deceptive web content. Its exact name and controls can change as IPVanish updates the product. An October 2026 report described a new antivirus experience built into the Windows and macOS desktop clients, while earlier product descriptions used the names Threat Protection Pro and Threat Protection.

Check your device and account before installing

IPVanish setup is platform-specific. A third-party support index lists guides for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Fire TV and Chrome OS, but that index was last updated in 2023 and does not establish today’s installation sequence or operating-system requirements. Check the current official guide for your platform before downloading.

  • Have an IPVanish account: You need an active subscription or another plan that includes the app and any antivirus feature you intend to use.
  • Use the official download source: On computers, obtain the installer from the current IPVanish source. On phones, tablets and TV devices, use the platform’s official app store. Avoid installers shared by third-party download sites.
  • Confirm compatibility: Verify the supported Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Fire TV or Chrome OS version shown in the current guide. The October 2026 desktop update may have different requirements from older Threat Protection releases.
  • Know which features you expect: VPN access may be available on more platforms than the updated desktop antivirus experience. Do not assume that a feature shown on Windows is present on a phone or television device.

Platform status at a glance

Platform What published information establishes What you must confirm in the current app or guide
Windows An updated antivirus experience was described as integrated into the desktop client on October 8, 2026. Supported Windows versions, plan eligibility, the current feature name and the exact toggle location.
macOS An updated antivirus experience was also described as integrated into the desktop client on October 8, 2026. Supported macOS versions, plan eligibility, the current feature name and the exact toggle location.
Android Earlier product descriptions listed standard Threat Protection on Android. Whether the current release still offers it, what it scans and whether it works while the VPN is disconnected.
iOS Earlier product descriptions listed standard Threat Protection on iOS. Whether the current release still offers it, what it scans and which controls are available on iPhone or iPad.
Fire TV A setup guide is listed, and earlier product descriptions mentioned standard Threat Protection. Current app availability, supported Fire TV versions and whether any protection feature is included.
Chrome OS A setup guide is listed. Whether the current Android or Chrome OS installation path applies and which protection features are supported.
Apple TV Earlier product descriptions mentioned standard Threat Protection. Current availability and whether the feature is still offered; the setup list did not establish a current Apple TV workflow.

Install and connect IPVanish on Windows or macOS

The labels below describe the decisions you need to make, not a guaranteed set of button names. IPVanish’s desktop interface changed with the 2026 antivirus update, so follow the current wording shown by your installer.

  • 【Full Gigabit Ports】Gigabit Wireless Internet Router with 2 Gigabit LAN ports and 1 Gigabit WAN ports, ideal for lots of internet plan and allow you to connect your wired devices directly.
  • 【Keep your Internet Safe】IPv6 supported. OpenVPN & WireGuard pre-installed, compatible with 30+ VPN service providers. Cloudflare encryption supported to protect the privacy.
  1. Open the current IPVanish desktop download page. Select the Windows or macOS installer that matches your computer and check the operating-system requirement before downloading.
  2. Run the installer. Accept the operating system’s permission prompts and complete installation. If your computer blocks software from outside its normal security settings, use the operating system’s approved method for allowing a verified installer rather than disabling protection broadly.
  3. Launch IPVanish and sign in. Enter the account credentials associated with your subscription. If the app asks you to choose a plan before showing protection controls, confirm that your account includes the required feature.
  4. Approve the VPN permission. Windows or macOS may ask to add a VPN configuration or network extension. Read the prompt and approve it only for the IPVanish app you installed from the official source.
  5. Connect the VPN. Use the app’s main connection control, select an appropriate location if the interface requires one, and wait for a connected status. Do not treat the app being open as proof that the VPN is active.
  6. Find the protection control. Look for a section labeled Antivirus, Threat Protection, Security or a similar term. The October 2026 update may use a new label compared with older Threat Protection Pro instructions.
  7. Enable the feature if your account offers it. Follow any additional permission request for file access, web filtering or a network extension. If no protection control appears, do not install a random add-on; check your plan, app version and platform eligibility first.
  8. Complete any first-run scan or update. If the app offers a database update or initial scan, let it finish before judging the feature’s status. Record the date and result so you know what the first scan actually covered.
  9. Test both layers independently. Confirm the VPN status changes when you disconnect it. Then check whether the antivirus or web-protection status remains enabled, because earlier desktop descriptions said Threat Protection Pro could continue operating while the VPN was disconnected. That behavior must be confirmed in the current release.

Install and connect on Android

  1. Open the current IPVanish listing in the official Android app store and verify the publisher before installing.
  2. Start the app, sign in with the account that holds your subscription, and review the permissions requested during setup.
  3. When Android asks to create a VPN connection, approve the request for IPVanish. Android normally displays a system confirmation before the first connection.
  4. Use the app’s connection control to establish the VPN, then wait for Android’s VPN indicator and the app’s connected status.
  5. Open the app’s security or protection area and check whether Threat Protection or another antivirus-style control is present for your account. Earlier product descriptions listed standard Threat Protection on Android, but that information predates the October 2026 desktop announcement and does not prove current mobile feature parity.
  6. If the feature is present, enable it and complete any on-device permission or update step. If it is absent, continue using the VPN only until you confirm current eligibility with IPVanish; do not assume that reinstalling will add a feature your plan or device does not support.

Install and connect on iPhone or iPad

  1. Use the current IPVanish listing in Apple’s official App Store. Check the developer name and the app’s current compatibility information.
  2. Open the app and sign in. iOS may ask permission to add a VPN configuration; approve the system prompt if you want the VPN to connect.
  3. Tap the app’s connection control and wait for both the in-app status and iOS VPN indicator to show an active connection.
  4. Check the security area for Threat Protection or a similarly named feature. Earlier product descriptions mentioned standard Threat Protection on iOS, but current availability, scanning scope and offline behavior require confirmation in the installed version.
  5. Enable the option only if it is shown as included with your account. Review any explanation of web filtering, file access or notifications so you understand what the iOS version can and cannot inspect.

Fire TV, Chrome OS and Apple TV

Fire TV

The support directory includes a Fire TV guide, and earlier product descriptions mentioned standard Threat Protection on Fire TV. Use the current IPVanish app listing available through the Fire TV interface, sign in, approve the VPN connection request and verify the connected status on the device. Then inspect the current app for a protection control; the older platform description is not proof that the same control remains available after the 2026 update.

Chrome OS

A Chrome OS setup guide is listed, but the current official instructions do not establish whether the current path uses a Chrome OS package, an Android app or another method. Follow the current official instructions for your Chromebook model and Chrome OS version. After installation, confirm whether you are configuring the VPN only or also receiving an antivirus-style feature.

Apple TV

Earlier product descriptions mentioned standard Threat Protection on Apple TV, while the setup list did not establish a current Apple TV installation sequence. Check the current App Store listing and IPVanish documentation for your tvOS version. If the app exposes only VPN controls, do not infer that desktop file scanning is available on the television.

VPN checks

  • The IPVanish app should display a connected state after you initiate a connection.
  • Your operating system should show its VPN indicator or an active VPN configuration.
  • Disconnecting from the app should remove that indicator. If it does not, another VPN profile may be active.
  • Switching between Wi-Fi and cellular data can require a new connection; check the status again instead of assuming continuity.

Antivirus and web-protection checks

  • The protection page should show an enabled state, not merely an installed app.
  • Look for a last-update or last-scan time if the current version provides one.
  • Read the feature description to determine whether it scans files, checks web destinations, or does both. Do not describe a web filter as a full file scanner.
  • Test the VPN and protection states separately. Historical desktop descriptions said Threat Protection Pro could remain active when the VPN was disconnected, but you must verify that behavior in your release.

Common problems and safe fixes

The VPN connects, but antivirus controls are missing

First check the account plan and update the app through the official source. Then verify that your Windows or macOS version is supported and that the 2026 antivirus rollout has reached your account. A missing menu can indicate eligibility or staged availability rather than an installation failure.

The app asks for a permission you did not expect

Read the operating-system prompt carefully. VPN setup normally requires permission to add a VPN configuration or network extension. File or web scanning may request separate access. Approve only prompts associated with the official IPVanish app and cancel installation if the request does not match the feature you selected.

The VPN will not connect

  • Check that another VPN or security product is not already controlling the connection.
  • Confirm that the IPVanish app is signed in and that the subscription is active.
  • Restart the app and repeat the system VPN permission prompt if the operating system shows the configuration as unavailable.
  • Try a different network to distinguish a local network restriction from an account or app problem.
  • Use the current IPVanish support instructions for your operating-system version before changing advanced network settings.

A scan or protection update will not finish

Keep the device online, allow the app to complete its update, and check available storage and operating-system updates. If the feature remains stuck, note the app version, operating-system version and exact message before contacting IPVanish support. Avoid downloading unofficial signature files or “fix” utilities.

What the older Threat Protection names mean

Older articles can be confusing because they describe a product state before the October 2026 desktop announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Layer or name Historical description How to use that information now
VPN Encrypted connection and privacy layer. Still treat it as separate from malware and deceptive-page detection.
Threat Protection Pro Earlier product descriptions described file scanning and page-level threat detection on Windows and macOS, including operation while the VPN was disconnected. Use only as historical context; confirm the current desktop name, plan and behavior in the app.
Standard Threat Protection Earlier product descriptions described it on Android, iOS, Fire TV and Apple TV. Confirm current mobile and TV availability and scanning scope before relying on it.
Updated desktop antivirus An October 8, 2026 report described antivirus integrated into Windows and macOS clients. Check the installed client for the current rollout, permissions and feature toggle.

Use both layers without misunderstanding their limits

Keep the VPN enabled on networks you do not fully trust, but do not use it as a substitute for cautious downloading, software updates, multi-factor authentication and a device’s built-in security controls. A VPN cannot make a phishing page legitimate, and antivirus-style filtering cannot encrypt every connection or hide your traffic from the local network.

  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

On a shared computer, give each user an account with appropriate permissions and keep the operating system and browser current. On mobile and TV devices, review notification and network permissions so you know when protection is paused. If IPVanish reports that a feature is unavailable for your platform or plan, treat that as a product boundary rather than evidence that the VPN itself is malfunctioning.

The practical setup decision

Install the current IPVanish app for your platform, sign in, approve the operating system’s VPN permission, and confirm a connected status. Then look for the current Antivirus or Threat Protection control and enable it only when the app says your device and plan support it. Windows and macOS users should pay particular attention to the 2026 desktop update; users on Android, iOS, Fire TV, Chrome OS or Apple TV should not assume that older Threat Protection descriptions still match the present interface.
