How to set up Instagram Teen Accounts and review privacy settings

Instagram Teen Accounts are created automatically for eligible teens; they are not a paid add-on or a separate device. The account starts with stricter privacy, messaging, content, and notification settings. Parents can add optional supervision with the teen’s agreement, but supervision shows limited activity—such as recent messaging contacts—not the contents of direct messages.

Use the current Instagram app to confirm that the account is identified as a Teen Account, review each protective setting together, and follow the in-app supervision prompts if your family wants time limits or approval for changes. Menu names and rollout availability can vary by account and location.

What an Instagram Teen Account does

Meta announced Teen Accounts on September 17, 2024, and its later updates dated April 10 and June 11, 2025, say the protections had rolled out to every country where Instagram is available. Instagram automatically places teens into the account type rather than asking families to buy or install anything.

The age rules matter:

  • For teens under 16, private-account protections apply to both existing and newly created accounts.
  • For someone under 18 who signs up, the account is private by default.
  • A teen under 16 needs parental permission to make the built-in protections less strict.

These defaults reduce unsolicited contact and exposure, but they do not make an account invisible or guarantee that every unwanted interaction is blocked. A private profile limits viewing and interaction by people who do not follow the teen; followers already approved by the teen remain a separate issue and should be reviewed.

Automatic protections versus optional supervision

Layer Who controls it What it changes or shows Participation and availability
Teen Account defaults Instagram applies them automatically; under-16 teens need parent permission to loosen them Private profile, restricted messaging, tags and mentions, sensitive-content controls, Hidden Words, notifications, and Sleep mode Built in for eligible teen accounts; exact labels can vary
Parental supervision Teen and parent use a consent-based connection Recent messaging contacts for seven days, daily time limits, blocked periods, and approval or denial of requests to loosen settings Both parties must participate; feature availability is location- and rollout-dependent

Neither layer is message-content monitoring. Supervision does not give a parent a transcript of direct messages.

Prepare before changing settings

  • Check the age details. Make sure the birthday on the account is accurate. Do not try to bypass Instagram’s age safeguards; an incorrect age can put the account in the wrong protection tier.
  • Update the app. Supervision guidance from Meta says both people should have Instagram accounts and the latest iPhone or Android app version. If an option is missing, update the app and check again.
  • Have both people present. A teen and parent should review the controls together. Supervision starts only after an invitation is accepted.
  • Make a follower plan. Decide which existing followers the teen still knows and trusts. A private account controls new access, not the safety of every existing follower.
  • Expect changing labels. Instagram periodically changes its settings layout. Use the app’s settings search for terms such as “Teen Account” or “supervision” when a menu label in an older guide does not appear.

How to set up and review the Teen Account

There is no single verified tap sequence that appears identically on every current build. Open Instagram’s current settings and use its search or the account prompts shown to you. Then work through the following controls.

1. Confirm that Instagram recognizes the account as a Teen Account

Open the account’s settings and look for the Teen Account status or an age-related safety notice. If Instagram does not show the expected status, first check the birthday and app version. Contact Instagram through its in-app support options if the age information is wrong; do not create a second account to evade a safeguard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Check private-account and follower approval settings

Confirm that the profile is private. On a private profile, people who are not approved followers cannot normally view the teen’s posts or interact with them through the profile. Review the current follower list separately:

  1. Remove followers the teen no longer knows or trusts.
  2. Block or restrict accounts that have caused unwanted contact.
  3. Review follow requests before accepting them, even when the request appears to come from a familiar name.

Private status does not erase content that an approved follower has already seen or saved elsewhere. Remind the teen to review old posts, tagged photos, and profile information as part of the same check.

3. Review direct-message permissions

Teen Accounts use the strictest messaging setting by default. Meta describes it as allowing messages from people the teen follows or is already connected with. Check the displayed message controls and leave the restrictive option enabled unless the family has a specific, understood reason to change it.

Explain the limit clearly: a restrictive setting reduces who can start a conversation, but it cannot prevent a trusted contact from forwarding a message or another person from contacting the teen through a different account. The teen should report, block, or restrict unwanted accounts rather than replying to pressure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Review tags and mentions

Tags and mentions are limited by default to people the teen follows. Verify both controls, because a tag in a photo and an @mention in a caption or comment are different ways to draw attention to the account. Keep the restrictive choices enabled and remove any tag that reveals a location, school, team, or routine the teen does not want public.

5. Check Hidden Words

Instagram’s strictest Hidden Words setting is enabled by default for Teen Accounts. It filters offensive words, phrases, and some unwanted comments or message requests. Review the custom-word area if it is available and add terms that are personally distressing or connected to a known harassment pattern.

Hidden Words is a filter, not a guarantee. Misspellings, images, coded language, and newly created accounts can evade it, so the teen still needs a reporting and blocking plan.

6. Review sensitive-content controls

Teen Accounts start with restrictive sensitive-content controls. Leave the most protective option selected unless you have discussed why a different setting is appropriate. The control affects what Instagram recommends or displays; it does not remove every sensitive post that someone sends directly or that appears in a conversation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Look for the 13+ content setting

In a June 2026 announcement, Meta said 13+ content settings were rolling out globally across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger Teen Accounts. The setting and its wording may not yet appear for every account or region. If it is visible, read the description in the app before choosing an option, and treat the rollout status as feature-dependent rather than assuming that every teen has the same choices.

8. Check notifications and Sleep mode

Meta lists a daily reminder after 60 minutes of use and Sleep mode from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. as Teen Account defaults. During Sleep mode, notifications are muted and direct messages receive an automatic reply. These are published settings from Meta, not measurements of how much time teens actually spend online. Confirm the schedule against the teen’s school, travel, and time-zone needs, and look for any local option to adjust it.

9. Save the review and revisit it after updates

After checking each area, have the teen show the parent what Instagram currently displays. Repeat the review after a major app update, a change in school or travel routine, or a new unwanted-contact incident. The account can retain its protective defaults while individual controls or labels change during a rollout.

How to add parental supervision

Eligibility and consent

Meta’s Help Centre guidance says the teen must be 13–17, the parent must be over 18, both people must have Instagram accounts, and both must agree. It also says only one parent can supervise an account and that supervision begins after the teen accepts an invitation. Because that help result may change and its page has not always been accessible without a login, follow the eligibility message and invitation flow shown in the current app if it differs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Supervision is optional. A parent cannot silently attach it to an account, and the teen’s participation is part of the setup. If the option is unavailable, check the app versions, account ages, and regional rollout before assuming that a setting is being withheld.

Start from Instagram or Family Center

Use the supervision prompt in the teen’s or parent’s current Instagram settings. Meta also identifies Family Center as the place to manage supervised experiences across Instagram, Meta Horizon, Facebook, and Messenger. The setup destination published by Meta is familycenter.meta.com/supervision. Follow the invitation and acceptance screens rather than relying on a fixed menu path copied from an older version.

What the parent can see

Once supervision is active, Meta says a parent can see which accounts the teen messaged during the past seven days. The parent cannot read the message contents. The seven-day contact view is an activity signal, not a copy of the conversations, and it does not reveal every interaction elsewhere on the internet.

Use that information as a prompt for a calm conversation: ask whether the contact is known, whether the teen felt pressured, and whether blocking or reporting is needed. Do not describe supervision to the teen as a promise that a parent can inspect every word.

Set time limits and blocked periods

Supervising parents can set a total daily Instagram time limit and block access during chosen periods. Schedule the blocked hours together so the plan matches school, sleep, family, and work commitments. A limit is a management tool, not a substitute for discussing why a particular account, conversation, or recommendation is unsafe.

Approve requests to loosen protections

Parents can approve or deny a teen’s request to make certain settings less restrictive. Under-16 teens need parental permission to loosen the built-in protections. Meta also says parents of older teens can enable supervision and approve setting changes. The approval capability does not turn supervision into message-content access.

End or change supervision

Use the current supervision controls shown in Instagram or Family Center to change the arrangement. If an invitation expires, is declined, or the account no longer meets the displayed eligibility rules, send a new invitation only after checking the app’s current instructions. Keep the automatic Teen Account protections in place even if the family decides not to continue optional supervision.

Age-specific decisions: under 16 and 16–17

Question Teen under 16 Teen aged 16–17
Private-account default Applies to existing and new accounts Applies when the teen signs up under the under-18 rule described by Meta
Making built-in protections less strict Requires parent permission The account still receives Teen Account protections; supervision and the app’s displayed approval rules determine how changes are handled
Parent visibility through supervision Recent messaging contacts for seven days, not message text The same limited contact view; supervision remains optional and consent-based
Time management Supervising parent can set daily limits and blocked periods Supervising parent can set daily limits and blocked periods

Age is only one factor. Instagram may apply a feature in stages by country, account history, device, or experiment group, so two teens of the same age can temporarily see different labels.

Regional rollouts and newer safety features

Meta’s June 2026 announcement describes 13+ content settings as rolling out globally across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger Teen Accounts, but “rolling out globally” does not mean every account receives every control on the same day. Check the actual setting in the account.

The same announcement places supervised experiences in Family Center and describes alerts for supervising parents when a teen repeatedly searches for terms related to suicide or self-harm. At the time of that announcement, those alerts had rolled out to supervising parents in the European Union, Brazil, and India. Do not assume the alert exists in another country; use the feature notice displayed for your region.

Meta’s February 11, 2025 announcement about India also described reviewing recent contacts, daily limits, and blocked hours. It was an India rollout announcement, so it should not be treated as proof that every detail was available worldwide at that date.

Troubleshooting common problems

The account is not marked as a Teen Account

Check the birthday, update Instagram, sign out and back in, and look for an in-app age or account-status notice. If the birthday is inaccurate, use Instagram’s official correction process. Do not alter the age to obtain a less restrictive experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The parent cannot send or accept a supervision invitation

Confirm that the teen is 13–17, the parent is over 18, both accounts are active, and both apps are current. Check whether another parent is already supervising, since Meta’s guidance allows only one supervising parent. If the app presents different eligibility text, follow that current prompt.

A setting named in a guide is missing

Use Instagram’s settings search and try the terms “supervision,” “Teen Account,” “Hidden Words,” or “sensitive content.” Menu labels can move during updates, and a feature can be unavailable in a particular region or account rollout. Do not assume that a missing label means the protective default is disabled; verify the value that Instagram shows.

Unwanted messages continue

Recheck the message-permission setting, review follower approval, and use block, restrict, and report controls for the account involved. Add recurring abusive terms to Hidden Words where the option is available. Keep evidence of serious threats and involve a trusted adult or local emergency service when there is an immediate danger.

The teen wants more privacy from the parent

Explain the boundary before enabling supervision: the parent can see recent messaging contacts and manage time or approval settings, but cannot read message contents through Instagram supervision. Agree on what the family will discuss when a new contact appears, while preserving the Teen Account’s automatic protections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical family review checklist

  • Verify the birthday and Teen Account status.
  • Confirm the profile is private and remove unknown existing followers.
  • Check message permissions and the teen’s block, restrict, and report options.
  • Keep tags and mentions limited to people the teen follows.
  • Review Hidden Words and add personally relevant terms.
  • Leave sensitive-content controls at the protective setting unless there is a clear reason to change them.
  • Check whether the 13+ content setting is available in this account and region.
  • Confirm the 60-minute reminder and 10 p.m.–7 a.m. Sleep mode schedule, adjusting only when the app permits and the family agrees.
  • If supervision is wanted, confirm consent, accept the invitation, and set limits or blocked periods together.
  • Recheck the controls after app updates or a change in the teen’s circumstances.

Bottom line

Instagram Teen Accounts provide automatic protective defaults, especially for younger teens, while parental supervision adds consent-based activity and time-management tools. Set up the account by verifying its age status, checking privacy and contact controls one by one, and using the current in-app or Family Center prompts. The key limit is unchanged: supervision can show a parent recent messaging contacts and approve certain changes, but it does not reveal direct-message contents.
