How to Set Up iCloud+ Private Relay and Hide Your IP Address

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

To hide your IP address while browsing in Safari, turn on Private Relay in iCloud settings on each iPhone, iPad, or Mac you use. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Private Relay and switch it on. On Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Private Relay, then enable it. An iCloud+ subscription belonging to you or a Family Sharing member is required.

What iCloud Private Relay changes

iCloud Private Relay is Apple’s privacy service for web browsing in Safari. It replaces the IP address normally exposed to websites with a temporary address and encrypts DNS requests, making it harder for a network provider, Apple, or a website to associate your identity with the sites you visit.

Apple describes its purpose this way: “iCloud Private Relay is designed to protect your privacy by ensuring that when you browse the web in Safari, no single party – not even Apple – can see both who you are and what sites you’re visiting.” Read Apple’s explanation in About iCloud Private Relay.

This is not a whole-device VPN. The protection is primarily for Safari web traffic and DNS name-resolution requests. Do not assume that traffic from every app, browser, or background service is routed through the relays.

What you need before turning it on

Requirement What to check
iCloud+ Your Apple Account must have iCloud+ access, either through your own subscription or a Family Sharing group.
Supported software Apple’s overview lists iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS 12 or later. Apple’s security documentation specifies macOS 12.0.1 or later and also lists visionOS 1 or later.
Supported region Private Relay is not offered in every country or region. Check Apple’s current availability information before relying on it while travelling.
Internet connection The feature must be enabled separately on each device and works only when the current network permits it.

For Apple’s current device and service requirements, see Apple’s Private Relay overview and iCloud Private Relay security. If the Private Relay control does not appear, first verify that the device is signed in to the Apple Account that has iCloud+ and that its operating system is supported.

Turn on Private Relay on an iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap your name at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap iCloud.
  4. Choose Private Relay.
  5. Turn on Private Relay, then authenticate if Apple asks for your device passcode or account credentials.

The same path is used on current iPhone and iPad software. Apple’s illustrated instructions are in Set up iCloud Private Relay on all of your devices.

Choose how precise your apparent location should be

Inside the Private Relay settings, tap IP Address Location. You can choose between two levels:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Setting What websites generally receive When to choose it
Maintain General Location A temporary IP address associated with a broad area that still supports local content in Safari. Use this when you want local search results, weather, language, or regional content to remain useful.
Use Country and Time Zone A broader location corresponding to your country and time zone rather than your more specific area. Use this when reducing location precision matters more than locally tailored results.

Changing this option does not turn Private Relay into a different service; it controls how much geographic detail is represented by the temporary address. Apple documents the iPhone choices in Protect your web browsing with iCloud Private Relay on iPhone.

Turn on Private Relay on a Mac

  1. Choose Apple menu in the top-left corner.
  2. Open System Settings.
  3. Click your name in the sidebar.
  4. Select iCloud.
  5. Click Private Relay.
  6. Turn on Private Relay. If macOS shows an Options button, use it to select the desired IP Address Location setting.

Private Relay is a per-device setting. Turning it on for an iPhone does not automatically enable it on an iPad or Mac, so repeat the procedure on every Apple device where you want Safari protection.

How the two-relay design hides your IP address

When Safari connects through Private Relay, the connection is divided between two independently operated relays.

First relay: your network and Apple

Your internet provider and the first relay can see the IP address assigned to your device. DNS requests are encrypted, however, so those parties cannot read the website name being requested from the DNS traffic they handle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Second relay: a third-party content provider

A separate relay operated by a third-party content provider receives the encrypted destination information, decrypts the website name, and creates a temporary IP address for the connection to the site. The website sees that temporary address instead of your original one.

Why separation matters

Because the information is split, no single participant—including Apple—has both your identity and the complete list of sites you visit. The network side knows where the connection came from but not the requested website name; the destination side knows where the request is going but receives a temporary address rather than your original identity-linked IP.

This design protects Safari browsing and DNS requests. It does not promise that every application on the device uses the relays, nor does it provide the broad device-wide traffic routing associated with a traditional VPN.

What websites and networks can still learn

Private Relay hides your original IP address from the website, but it does not make you anonymous in every respect. A site can still use information you voluntarily provide, account logins, cookies, browser characteristics, or its own analytics. If you sign in to a service, that service can associate activity with the account you use even when the connection address is temporary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your internet provider can still see that your device is communicating with Apple’s relay infrastructure and can enforce its own network policies. Private Relay also does not override parental controls, employer management, content restrictions, or a website’s authentication requirements.

Why a site may stop working

Some websites use IP addresses for fraud checks, regional licensing, security monitoring, rate limits, or approximate location. A temporary relay address can trigger an additional verification step, show a less specific version of the site, or cause the site to reject the request. A Wi-Fi or mobile provider may also be incompatible with Private Relay.

Temporarily show your IP address to one site

Use this option when only a particular website is having trouble. It limits the exception to that site instead of disabling Private Relay everywhere.

  1. On iPhone or iPad, open the affected page in Safari.
  2. Open Safari’s Page Menu (the menu button beside the address field).
  3. Choose Show IP Address, if the option is available.
  4. Reload the page and complete the site’s sign-in or verification process.

On Mac, open the page in Safari, choose View > Reload and Show IP Address, and allow the reload to complete. Apple lists these controls in Manage iCloud Private Relay for specific websites, networks or system settings.

Allow a network to see your IP address

If Private Relay will not work on a particular Wi-Fi or cellular network, disable Limit IP Address Tracking for that network. The exact switch is managed in the network’s settings; on an iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the information button for the connected network, and turn off Limit IP Address Tracking. For cellular data, open Settings > Cellular, select the relevant line or data options, and check for the same control where supported.

On a Mac, open System Settings > Network, select the active Wi-Fi or other connection, open its details, and look for the Private Relay or IP-address-tracking control. Labels can vary by macOS version and connection type.

Apple warns that disabling this protection allows the network provider and websites to monitor Safari activity. Re-enable the control after testing if the network does not require the exception.

Private Relay availability when travelling

Apple does not offer Private Relay in every country or region. If you enter a region where it is unavailable, Apple says the feature turns off automatically. It can turn on again when you return to a supported region. Availability can change, so consult Apple’s current feature-availability information rather than assuming that a particular country has permanent support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A regional restriction is different from a website’s location policy. In a supported country, a site may still require a more precise address for licensing or security reasons; use the location choices or the site-specific exception described above.

Check that it is working

There is no single status page that proves every Safari request used Private Relay, because the service depends on the current network, region, and website. Use these checks:

  • Return to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Private Relay on iPhone or iPad, or the corresponding iCloud pane in Mac System Settings, and confirm the switch remains on.
  • Open a new Safari tab and visit a site that displays the connection address. It should not show the public IP address assigned directly to your home router or cellular connection.
  • Check whether Safari shows a relay warning or an option to show your IP address. If you used that option for a site, the exception applies to that site and should not be treated as a test of the normal relay path.
  • Try another network if the service is unavailable. A network-level incompatibility can make the setting appear enabled while preventing relay use for that connection.

The relay address can change, and its location may be broad, so do not use one displayed address as a permanent identifier or expect a particular city to appear every time.

Troubleshoot a missing or inactive setting

Private Relay is not listed

  • Confirm that you are signed in to the Apple Account that has iCloud+ access.
  • Check whether your iCloud+ access comes through Family Sharing and that you remain in the family group.
  • Update the device to an operating-system release supported by Apple’s current documentation.
  • Check Apple’s regional availability because the control may be unavailable where the service is not offered.

The switch is on but Safari reports a problem

  • Check the current Wi-Fi or cellular network for compatibility.
  • Temporarily turn off Limit IP Address Tracking for that network and test again.
  • If only one website fails, use Safari’s site-specific Show IP Address option instead of turning off Private Relay globally.
  • Reload Safari after changing the setting. A page that was already open may retain the earlier connection state until it is reloaded.

Local results or regional services look wrong

Change IP Address Location to Maintain General Location. The broader country-and-time-zone option intentionally provides less geographic precision and can affect local content.

Private Relay compared with a VPN

Capability iCloud Private Relay Typical VPN service
Primary coverage Safari web browsing and DNS requests on supported Apple devices. Often designed to route traffic from many apps and system services, depending on the provider and configuration.
Address seen by websites A temporary relay IP address with a selectable level of location precision. Usually an address belonging to a VPN server selected by the provider or user.
Identity and destination separation Uses two relays so one party does not see both your identity and the site you visit. Depends on the provider’s architecture, logging policy, and technical implementation.
Configuration Built into Apple devices and enabled in iCloud settings; requires iCloud+. Normally requires a separate account, app, profile, or system configuration.
Regional availability Not available in all countries and regions. Varies by provider and local law.

The practical distinction is coverage. Choose Private Relay when your goal is to reduce IP and DNS exposure in Safari with Apple’s integrated two-relay design. Do not describe it as a replacement for a service that specifically provides device-wide traffic routing.

Privacy choices and trade-offs

Keep the feature enabled by default

For ordinary Safari use, leaving Private Relay enabled reduces the amount of identifying network information exposed to websites and keeps DNS requests encrypted within the relay design.

Use the narrowest exception possible

If a site requires your address, expose it only to that site through Safari’s page control. If an entire network is incompatible, disable Limit IP Address Tracking only for that network and restore it when the connection no longer needs the exception.

Select location precision deliberately

Maintain General Location is the balanced choice for local content. Use Country and Time Zone provides a broader location signal but may reduce the accuracy of local services. Neither setting reveals your original IP address to the website under normal relay operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do you need new hardware?

No. Private Relay is a software setting for supported Apple devices, and no accessory, replacement device, or special networking equipment is required. If an existing iPhone, iPad, or Mac meets Apple’s operating-system and iCloud+ requirements, enabling the setting is the relevant action.

Key takeaways

  • Enable Private Relay separately on every iPhone, iPad, or Mac where Safari protection is wanted.
  • An iCloud+ subscription is required, including qualifying access through Family Sharing.
  • The service uses two relays to separate knowledge of your IP address from knowledge of the destination website.
  • Protection focuses on Safari and DNS requests; it is not a promise of whole-device VPN coverage.
  • Choose between maintaining a general location and using only country and time-zone information.
  • For compatibility problems, reveal the IP address to one site or disable Limit IP Address Tracking for one network rather than switching off the service everywhere.
  • Availability depends on the country or region and can change while travelling.
