Open Google’s Inactive Account Manager page while signed in to the Google Account you want to plan for. Choose a period of inactivity, decide whether Google should notify trusted people, select what data (if any) each person may download, and make a deliberate choice about account deletion. Review the plan whenever your contacts, account use, or privacy preferences change.
Inactive Account Manager is an inactivity plan, not a death-certificate check and not a mechanism that transfers your account or password. It acts only after the waiting period you configure. Death can be one reason an account becomes inactive, but the feature cannot establish that you have died.

What Inactive Account Manager does
Google describes Inactive Account Manager as a way to specify who should have access to some account information and whether the account should be deleted. The plan is configured in Google Account settings and can later be edited or turned off from the same area.
When Google’s systems determine that the account has been inactive for the period you selected, Google sends the notice you configured. If you enabled data sharing, the recipient’s email identifies the selected data and includes a download link. A phone number for a trusted contact, when requested, is used to help verify that person’s identity before the download; it is not a sign-in credential and does not give the person your password.

The feature is therefore best understood as a controlled response to prolonged inactivity. It does not appoint an executor, change ownership of files, prove a death, or guarantee that another person can continue using the account.
Decide what you want the plan to accomplish
Before opening the setup page, decide which outcome fits your wishes. You can configure notification without data sharing, data sharing with notification, or an account-deletion instruction if that option is offered in the current interface. These choices have different privacy and continuity consequences.
Notification only
A notification tells a trusted contact that Google has observed the configured period of inactivity. It does not provide the person with a download of your selected account data. This is appropriate when someone should know that the account is no longer being used but should not receive a digital archive.
Notification plus selected data
Data sharing adds a list of the data you selected and a download link to the notice. Google allows up to 10 recipients, and you can assign different data selections to different people. This lets you give one person a limited set of records while giving another a different set, subject to the data types Google makes shareable.

Account closure
Account closure is a separate and consequential decision. Google’s deceased-account guidance says that if you ask Google to close the account, Google cannot later process a request to turn over its contents. Do not treat closure as a reversible archive or as a transfer step. If preserving the possibility of a later request matters to your family or representative, consider that consequence before enabling closure.
Set up the plan step by step
- Sign in to the intended account. Use the Google Account whose inactivity should trigger the plan. If you manage several accounts, repeat the process separately for each one; a plan for one account does not configure your other accounts.
- Open Google’s current help page. Go to About Inactive Account Manager and follow its link to the Inactive Account Manager page. The page and controls are tied to the account in which you are signed in.
- Choose the waiting period. Select the period Google offers for waiting after the account becomes inactive. The reviewed help content does not publish a fixed list of interval choices, so use the live options displayed on the page rather than relying on an older guide or a remembered number.
- Add trusted contacts, if desired. Choose the people you want Google to notify or to receive data. Google says you can select up to 10 people. Enter each person’s current contact details carefully and check spelling before continuing.
- Choose whether each contact receives a notice, data, or both. The current interface may present these choices together or in separate prompts. A person can be notified without receiving data, while another can receive a notice with a data download.
- Select the data for each recipient. Google lets you choose all shareable data or selected data types, and it permits different selections for different recipients. Some information cannot be shared. Read the live list instead of assuming that every product, message, or account detail is included.
- Supply a phone number if Google requests one. Google says the number helps verify the recipient’s identity before that person downloads shared data. Explain this purpose to the contact; it is not a way for the contact to sign in to your account.
- Review the deletion setting. Decide whether Google should delete the account after the configured inactivity process, if the page offers that choice. Read the consequence in the current prompt, keeping in mind Google’s warning that closure prevents a later request to turn over the account contents.
- Finish the on-screen review. Confirm the waiting period, recipients, contact details, data selections, and deletion choice exactly as displayed. Do not assume that a contact has been notified at this stage; Google says trusted contacts are not notified during setup.
- Record the plan privately. Tell the appropriate person that a plan exists and where your broader estate or digital-legacy instructions are kept. Do not write down or share your Google password as a substitute for this plan.
Choose a waiting period that matches real account use
The waiting period controls when Google may send the notice and offer a download. Choose it based on how often you normally sign in and how long you could realistically be away from the account. A period that is too short can trigger while you are traveling, ill, or using a different account; a period that is too long may delay the information reaching the people you intend to help.
Google’s help page does not state the complete set of selectable intervals in the reviewed material. The live setup page is therefore the authority for the available choices. Treat the period as a practical inactivity threshold, not as a prediction of when death would be recorded. The plan will not activate merely because a person has died if Google’s activity checks do not reach the selected threshold, and it can activate for other reasons when the account remains unused.

Understand whom you can notify and what they can receive
Up to 10 recipients
Google states, “You can select up to 10 people to receive this data.” You do not have to use all 10 places. Select people who can act responsibly with the information and who are likely to recognize the message as legitimate.

Different data for different people
The setup can assign different shareable data to different recipients. For example, one trusted person might need a limited set of documents while another receives a different set of account information. Make each selection from the current data list and consider whether the recipient genuinely needs the full set.
Some information is excluded
Google says that some information cannot be shared through Inactive Account Manager. The exact list can change with the interface and products connected to the account. Do not promise a contact that every item in Google services will be available for download.
Contact details and verification
Check each email address and phone number before saving the plan. Google says the phone number helps verify identity before a trusted contact downloads the shared data. It should not be described as a password replacement, an account-recovery method, or permission to sign in as you.

These are not competing account-recovery methods. A notice does not grant login access, and a download link does not hand over your password or let the recipient operate the account as you.

What activity Google looks at
Google says it looks at several signals when determining whether an account is active. Its examples include:
- Recent sign-ins.
- Activity recorded in My Activity.
- Gmail use, including use of the Gmail app.
- Check-ins from an Android device.
These examples are not a complete technical specification. Google does not promise that every edge case will be treated in one particular way, so do not use a single action as a guaranteed way to reset or prevent the plan. If you continue using the account, use it normally and review the plan rather than relying on an undocumented activity workaround.

- Google evaluates inactivity. The plan is considered only after the period you selected and in light of the activity signals Google describes.
- Google sends the configured notice. Trusted contacts are not notified merely because you added them during setup. The notice is sent after the inactivity condition is reached.
- Recipients see the scope of sharing. If data sharing is enabled, the email lists the selected data and includes a download link. Different recipients can receive different data selections.
- Identity verification can be required. Google says a trusted contact’s phone number helps verify identity before the download.
- The deletion instruction is applied according to the plan. If you selected account deletion, read the current Google wording carefully because closure affects whether a later request for the account contents can be processed.
Because the plan responds to inactivity rather than a verified death, tell your chosen contacts how to recognize the message and how it fits with your private estate instructions. Do not forward your password to make the process easier.
Do not confuse this plan with Google’s two-year inactive-account policy
Google maintains a separate Inactive Google Account Policy. Google says personal accounts that remain inactive across Google for at least two years may be deleted. The policy includes exceptions, advance notifications, and the possibility that individual products have their own inactivity rules. Google also says accounts provided through work, school, or another organization are outside this personal-account policy.

An account can meet the conditions of your custom plan without being eligible for policy-based deletion, and the two-year policy does not replace the plan. Treat them as separate mechanisms when making a digital-legacy decision.
Account deletion, deceased-user requests, and passwords
Google’s deceased-user guidance explains that it may work with immediate family members or representatives in some cases and reviews those requests carefully. It also says Google cannot provide passwords or other login details through that process. A family member therefore cannot rely on a deceased-user request as a way to obtain your credentials.
The same guidance warns that if you ask Google to close the account, Google cannot later process a request to turn over its contents. If preserving the possibility of a later review matters, do not describe closure as a temporary holding state. Decide whether notification and limited data sharing meet your needs without selecting closure.
Use a private planning channel to tell the right people that the plan exists. That record can point to legal documents or other instructions without exposing your password. Update it if the chosen contacts change.
Review and maintain the plan
Inactive Account Manager is not a set-and-forget document. Google says you can edit your choices or turn the plan off from the Inactive Account Manager page. Review it after any of these changes:
- You stop using the account regularly or move important activity to another Google Account.
- A trusted contact’s email address or phone number changes.
- Your relationship with a recipient changes and that person should no longer receive data.
- You want to narrow or expand the data selection.
- Your wishes about account deletion change.
- You create a separate plan for another personal account.
When reviewing, open the current page while signed in, check the live interval choices and shareable-data list, verify every recipient, and read the deletion wording again. Interface labels and available data types can change, so an old screenshot or instruction may no longer match what Google displays.
